  1. good call on Coffey..... A team like the Philthies could use Coffey, especially in their ball park where you have to put high value on a sinkerballer who can keep the ball in the park & Coffey certainly fits that criteria
  2. I like Baseball America's prospect lists because their focus is on (1) tools and (2) projectibility ....the things that are important when looking at the younger prospects at the lower minor league levels (dare I say: the anti-Billy Beene approach)
  3. the Braves beat writers have stated on more than one occasion that the Braves plan to pick up Hudson's option.....
  4. I like the Twins & Marlins.....they squeeze a lot from their budget, know how to scout and acquire other teams young talent, and develop their own draft choices...also, the kids they promote from their farm system are generally fundamentally sound & know how to play the game
  5. Go Braves!!! ....best record in the NL since 06/28 (51-30) playoff rotation? I'd go Jurrjens, Vazquez & Hanson .....and put Lowe, Hudson & Kawakami in the bullpen (only need three starters for 1st round)
  6. I've suggested Kawakami in other threads so I'll chime in again.... Kawakami is better than his numbers.....he had a "tired arm" in spring training that slowed his start to the season, as another poster indicated in his stats.... he's pretty darn good & he eats innings ....IMHO he'd be a #3 starter for the Brewers, assuming Parra regains his form.... ....he's owed $7.333 million for both 2010 & 2011 before becoming a free agent in 2012....he's 34 but has never had any serious arm problems..... As a Braves AND Brewers fan, I think a Kawakami for Hart trade would be fair....although I don't think the Braves want Hart because they'll probably go with Jason Heyward in RF (with McLouth in CF & Diaz in LF)....the Braves will probably only resign one of their two free agent relievers, Soriano & Gonzalez...therefore I think they'll ask for Coffey, to fill a bullpen need, & a prospect in return....
  7. right now Gamel is a strike out machine; no need to further destroy his confidence & value...IMHO he's in a funk that lowers his trade value ....he's making Rob Deer look like a contact hitter! winter league is very important to Gamel's future, and trade-value....he desperately needs a return-to-form MacGehee is next year's opening day 3rd-sacker. period.
  8. the last thing the Brewers need is a cancer like Bradley influencing their young talent....
  9. If I was Lopez I'd tell Melvin that I'd be open to return with a longterm deal BUT only as the everyday 2B & if his buddy Weeks is moved to another position ....otherwise, free agency Is Weeks healthy enough to work on a move to the OF this winter? (I'm thinking instructional league training not winter league games)
  10. actually, I did see a fairly recent AJC article that mentioned his debut when the Brewers bombed him....and his ERA is something like 2.42 since then ....Hanson is the real deal although his mechanics scare the hell out of me....but he's managed to stay healthy to-date
  11. Texas has found the right formula by going with young, hungry talent.....IMHO the only pitcher they'd "want" to move would be Millwood, but he is owned about $15mm (?) for 2010 which is his contract year & he has a history of arm problems.... Can't see the Rangers making a blockbuster-type move....maybe your basic fringe moves but that's it
  12. various teams will lineup this winter with trade offers for Vazquez & it will take more than MacGehee, and I recognize that he's a good young player.... but the Braves have stockpiled decent 3B/2B types in Prado, Infante & Johnson The more I think about it the Braves will prefer to keep Vazquez, especially since he was recently quoted in the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he'd like to stay in Atlanta with a contract extension.... IMHO Atlanta will try to trade Kawakami, or maybe Lowe, this winter....they'll need a quality reliever & a bat....Kawakami is good pitcher, better than his numbers, and is controlled with a reasonable contract
  13. thats a good point X ellence.... Freeman advanced to AA ball this year as an 18 year old & did very well, although his numbers fell off late in the season after he tried to play thru a wrist injury....he'll probably be a Baseball America top 25 quality prospect or thereabouts & is the Braves #2 prospect after Heyward....I said this in the other "trade with Braves" thread: the concensus on the Braves boards is that the team would prefer to re-sign LaRoche to bridge the time until Freeman is ready....however.... ... Fielder is a rare difference maker & that quality of a hitter is the missing piece in the Braves puzzle....I'm sure the Braves would go after him if they don't have to mortgage the farm system to get him.... Hanson & Heyward are untouchable but I'm sure Frank Wren would listen to Melvin should he call.... Oh yeah, FWIW I checked "Cot's Baseball Contracts" & Jurrjens is controlled thru 2013, then he becomes a free agent
  14. for giggles, lets talk about this scenario: ...lets say Frank Wren insisted on Fielder, but Hanson, Medlen & Heyward are taboo ....what if Melvin countered by insisting on Jurrjens & Julio Teheran..... what do you think? Brewers get a healthy, proven, 23 year old ace that they control (not sure how many more years, but he's a Boras client)....Teheran is only 18 & is a power RHP who advanced to the A league team in Rome, GA...and based on what I read he'll probably be rated in the top 5 in the Braves organization, maybe as high as #3 The Braves might be able to do this because they have 5 darn good starters & the strength of their farm system is starting pitching depth
  15. I agree....and Fielder for Vazquez straight up would be a bad move for the Brewers... I simply don't think the Braves & Brewers are good trade partners because the Brewers can't afford to give up what the Braves need
  16. Hanson lost 4 wins via blown saves by his bullpen (per the Atlanta Journal Constitution)....10-3 2.65 looks great, but 14-3 would make him the favorite... However I'd give it to Happ....10-4 2.77 is impressive, but you factor in that he's pitching in a hitting-biased ballpark (understatement!) & he's a key player on a division leading ball club is enough for me....
  17. I'm a longtime Braves fan living in Wisconsin.....but I'm a Brewers fan too (1a & 1b) Jurrjens (& Hanson) are nearly untouchable from the Braves perspective.....so Wren would counteroffer by asking for Fielder (which would also be crazy) Realistically, the Brewers don't have what the Braves need to land a Jurrjens or Vazquez; this is not a knock on the Brewers.....HOWEVER, they could put together a package to land Lowe or Kawakami, but the price will still be considerable Braves needs this offseason: 1) elite hitter at 1B (or 3B if Chipper is moved to 1B)....they'll probably prefer to resign LaRoche to keep 1B warm until Freddie Freeman is ready.... 2) closer or setup man.... Soriano & Mike Gonzalez are free agents & IMHO the Braves will only resign one of them.... the Braves might be interested in Todd Coffey ....moving Lowe to closer is unlikely but shouldn't be ruled out 3) 3B of the future....area of weakness in the Braves organization, especially if Chipper retires after 2010 as rumored....Gamel or Lawrie
  18. It is going to take a heck-of a lot more than McGehee to land Vazquez; that offer is laughable from the Braves perspective.... the Braves need a proven elite hitter and a top prospect in return for Vazquez....frankly, it's a sellers market for top of the rotation starting pitching therefore you'll need to offer much, much more because the Brewers won't be the only team interested in Vazquez.... Frankly, I don't think the Braves will entertain offers for Vazquez (or Jurrjens & Hanson) unless they're overwhelmed by someone who's very desparate.... but IMHO they'll shop Lowe & Kawakami, but only if they get a great return....
