  1. couldn't let Prince go to arbitration........because no matter if he won or lost his arby case, he's so damn sensitive that he'd pout all year about every minor point made by the Brewer's legal team remember arbitration cases are designed to be confrontational: Boras says Prince is the greatest invention since canned beer.....Brewers say Prince is a fat slob who can't catch a cold at 1B
  2. BA likes the haul the Rays received for Garza better than what the Brewers gave up for Greinke (see BA...prospects...."ask BA") ....but they consider the Royals haul from the Brewers more of a sure thing.... fwiw...."BA's 2011 Prospect Handbook" rates the top farm systems as follows: 1. Royals 2. Braves 3. Rays however they sent their ratings to publication before the aforementioned trades & Callis said he would how have the Rays #2 (Archer would be their #4 prospect)
  3. HGH? no, I'd say doughnuts & fast food burgers AJ can no longer play CF because he's too fat.....what a waste of talent!
  4. a Milwaukee Braves/Brewers fan weighing in.... I watched Saito a lot last year..... he's very good when rested but he slips when used too often.....his 2009 season was interrupted too often by nagging injuries like "tired arm" & the such that seemed to happen too often....IMHO he was much better when he started an inning as opposed to coming into the middle of an inning with runners in scoring position.... A good signing
  5. the middle of the Tigers batting order looks pretty stout, assuming everyone stays healthy..... Cabrera, Martinez, Ordonez, ++++
  6. 1) I'd keep Jeffress ....gotta build the staff around young (cheap) power arms... wish the organization would commit to him as a starter but what do I know 2) Braves.... Teheran, Freeman, Delgado, Minor & Vizcaino were all rated by Baseball America in their last midseason top 50 list....and Frank Wren has been quoted as saying he wants to build around those cats, not trade them (unless someone blows him away with an oppportunity to get a Braun type of bat) ....the next name on their list is Beachy and IMHO that's why his name came up 3) Kawakami..... Wren said his needs are CF, a 2B/SS utility man, and moving Kawakami's contract..... rumored to be currently negotiating with the Pirates for Kawakami.... could be had for $2mm to $3mm net with the Braves picking up the balance ....he'd be a steal if he returns to his 2009 form, and there's no reason he shouldn't.... I've always liked him; his pitching style reminded me of Nomo
  7. the Rangers minor league system is LOADED so they could offer a nice package for Prince (or Grienke)....but they're short of cash based on putting Michael Young on the trade block while they were negoatiating with Lee.... IMHO a Prince deal would have to include Young before the Rangers would approve a deal....not necessarily a bad thing
  8. I'm not convinced that Melvin ever offered Cain for Beachy...I think it went something like this: MELVIN: offers Cain for Minor BRAVES: no.... counter-offers Cain for Beachy MELVIN: no.... counter-offers Gomez for Beachy BRAVES: no (Braves are still skiddish about trading their top prospects after losing Netali Feliz & Elvis Andrus in the Texeira deal)
  9. FWIW.....Baseball America has released the Braves Top 10 prospect list.... Here’s the complete list of the Braves Top prospects: 1. RHP Julio Teheran 2. 1B Freddie Freeman 3. RHP Randall Delgado 4. LHP Mike Minor 5. RHP Craig Kimbrel 6. SS Matt Lipka 7. RHP Arodys Vizcaino 8. RHP Brandon Beachy 9. LHP Brett Oberholtzer 10. RHP J.J. Hoover BA's best tools in the Braves organization includes: "Best Change Up" ... Minor "Best Control" ... Beachy btw...BA says Teheran should be around #6 in BA's OVERALL prospect list & compares him to Pedro Martinez IMHO Beachy would be a a fair return for Cain.... the Braves #5 starter position will come down to Minor vs Beachy this spring but the Braves prefer Minor because they don't have a southpaw starter
  10. Bingo! As a Braves fan this especially sucks because of Bud-Lite's brainchild called the unbalanced schedule....not only do the Braves have to face Philly 18 times BUT they also face the Red Sox 6 times in intra-league games (as a designated rival) ....makes it an uphill battle even for the wildcard How would you like that schedule for a team with an payroll budget of only $85 million?
  11. Twins freeing up $$$$$ to sign Pavano?
  12. Pat Egan is a 6'8" 26 year old RHP drafted from the Royals system....split time between AA & AAA, struggled a bit in AAA but good numbers in AA although his strikeout numbers were low.... overall 7-2 with 5 saves & 3.44 era Lost 21 year RHP Adrian Rosario who pitched in Appleton
  13. not to mention the draft is rigged in favor of the huge market teams too.... 1) a draft prospect names Boras as his agent (how is this player not considered professional & thus ineligible to play college is beyond me)... anyway, say the kid is projected to be a top 15 pick AND Boras demands a signing bonus of a top 3 pick OR he'll send the kid to play college ball....ugh ....and we've seen many examples where these prospects "fall" to the Red Sox, Yankees or even the Tigers who have the resources to dole out the signing bonus 2) Arbitration = Satan ..... a budget strapped team can not even offer arbitration to a player in fear of being strapped with an inflated contract ... therefore the player becomes a free agent & leaves a team with no compensation (draft choices) in return
  14. IMHO Ellsbury is yet another east coast media creation.....he's a LF with zero power; in other words he's Juan Pierre without a history of success There's a reason the Sox acquired Cameron: Ellsbury can't play CF
  15. IMHO the Braves would leap at an offer of Gomez for Kawakami & $$$$$$ to the Brewers to offset some of KK's salary KK is due $6,666,667 in 2011, the final year of his contract....lets say ATL sends $4 million in the deal
  16. 1) the Rays have $$$$ problems....they are in no position to take on Prince's salary.... Why do you think they're letting good players like Crawford & Soriano leave? because they have no $$$$! they're rumored to trade Bartlett (once again, a salary dump) to the Orioles for Reimold plus prospects, therefore no use for MacGhee 2) the Rays are filling their holes within, however they're very thin in their bullpen & need a closer.... IMHO they'll demand Axford plus prospects in any deal involving Garza or any of their other starters
  17. Kemp is a butcher in CF so TG, Jr should have a role as a late inning defensive replacement
  18. the Braves can offer Beachy (but only for the right hitter) because of their starting pitching depth: Hudson Lowe Hanson Jurrjens Minor Medlen (expected back from TJ surgery by July/August) Teheran (plan is to promote him to ATL by midseason.....similar timeline to Tommy Hanson in 2009) the last 5 are all 24 or younger ....Frank Wren said he's still looking for another LOOGY to complete his bullpen
  19. I'm a big fan of MLB.com /MLB Network, maybe because I hate ESPN, so I was disappointed with there poor analysis of this offer.... an outside-the-box thought: If this trade happened would the Brewers consider making Axford a starter?
  20. my take is Cain's name was floated but Melvin couldn't get what he wanted from the Braves....of course the normal prototcall is for both teams to deny the conversation why not just counteroffer with the Braves & offer Gomez? ....granted the return will be much smaller but you could still expect to land a pitching prospect 1) Braves are desperate for a CF who can play defense.... the Braves are built around pitching & defense because Turner field has a huge CF area & Gomez' strength is he can go-get-em in CF ....poor defense killed the Braves in the playoffs, including CF, & it's something they're trying to fix 2) the Braves traditionally have a taste for "toolsy" ballplayers ....Gomez certainly falls into that category plus he's still young enuf that another team would think that they could turn him around 3) moving Gomez would be a confidence-builder for Cain.... plus the team still has Dickerson for depth ...plus at some point they're going to have to make room for guys like Gindl & Schafer, maybe as soon as mid-season
  21. Beachy straight up for Cain would be a fair deal.....although the Braves fans want more Can't see the Braves moving Minor or Jurrjens for only Cain....Brewers would have to sweeten the offer considerably
  22. +1 on Loewen.... IIRC he's a 1B.... what I'd do is go back to Toronto & waive the PTBNL (from the Villy trade) for the rights to assign Loewen to AAA or AA with hopes that he can compete as Prince's replacement in 2012
  23. IIRC Cabrera made about $3mm last season & was eligible for arbitration..... besides being grossly overpaid, the Melk-man was grossly overweight last year ....his defense was poor, he had no power, poor OBP, etc, etc...basically he sucked ...just a huge disappointment
  24. regarding the Marlins.... IMHO 2B/3B will be some combination of Infante & Coghlan......and CF looks like its Bonifacio job to lose Gomez? as a Braves (and Brewers) fan I'd like to see Gomez in the ATL......the Braves need a CF with Gomez' arm & speed to man that huge CF at Turner field....maybe an offer of 23 year old LHP Scott Diamond (8-7 3.46 at AAA & AA, actually finished strong in AAA) and 22 year old RHP JJ Hoover (14-7 3.29 at AA & high-A) ....Hoover is the more highly regarded & both will be in the organizations top 30 by Baseball America
