  1. I loved Creed's tirade against people tweeting about Betty White. Mostly because it summed up my feelings from a half hour before, when I turned on the TV to watch 30 Rock and I saw Community cashing in on the Betty White bandwagon. I don't know if this was intended as a direct diss on Community, but if it was, it was brilliant and Community certainly deserved it. As for this being Carrell's last season, I'm sad but hopeful. They should use this as a chance to give Michael's character arc a clear ending to work towards. I'm rooting for him to come out on top and end his tenure on a high note.
  2. I think I'd continue following MLB, just because I'm fascinated with baseball as a pure sport. But I don't know if I'd pick another team to root for. Even now, I enjoy watching games that don't involve the Brewers just because they're games, and I could see myself treating the whole league that way.
  3. Staind Incubus 3-11 Finger 11 Hoobastank Smile Empty Soul How about band names that would be really clever if the band that uses them weren't so terribly un-clever. Fallout Boy Nickelback And I've got to say, Neutral Milk Hotel is just about the perfect name to describe Jeff Magnum's music and lyrics.
  4. I remember this article from a couple of years ago about Riske's relationship to Zack Grienke. Apparently, Riske helped him get past his social anxiety order and make it back to the starting rotation. A very big deal, considering how dominant Grienke has become. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2008-03-28-622764088_x.htm Seems like a great guy who just ran into some bad luck. Best wishes to him.
  5. So $51 million for player salaries with about $15 million profit. That maxes out their payroll in the $60 million range without an increase in revenue (taking into account associated increases in other costs). Granted, if they build a winner their revenue will increase but I have a hard time seeing it increasing by too much. I wonder if this is similar to the Brewers financial situation and Mark A is significantly overspending. Hopefully they're saving the surplus now so they can use it when they're ready to compete. (provided they're allowed to do that. I don't understand all of MLB's financial rules)
  6. Pick this guy up, no questions asked, as long as the Rockies will continue paying most of his salary for the remainder of the season. If he can regain form, he's an extremely valuable player for what his cost would be. An on-base machine with some power. If he continues to struggle, the Brewers will not have lost much.
  7. Awesome. Then we could have a GM who's not just bad, but Superbad.
  8. Actually, Jenkins 2005 season was very very good. 0.888 OPS. This was better than Carlos Lee's that year, 0.811. And if you think back to that season, Jenkins started off poorly and then majorly heated up, while Carlos did the opposite. I don't remember who batted in front of who, but it seems that there was no protection going on in that scenario.
  9. Me neither. Without Sheets, we would not have gotten to the playoffs. He was absolutely brilliant in his final season in Milwaukee before getting hurt.
  10. I lived on Cambrige ave on the east side a few months ago, and they had the storm sewer opened up for repairs and upgrades. They've spent months on just that one street. It's a huge task. I believe the original sewer is made of wood and over 100 years old. It will take a ton of time and money to upgrade all of the infrastructure, but it's a step in the right direction. And yes, the smell is primarily due to algea bloom and die-off because of the invasive Zebra and Quagga mussels. And I believe ecoli content is primarily due to gull scat, though we do see a major influx after heavy rains (last week for example). You can always check beach water quality at the following web site: http://www.wibeaches.us/a...030582::NO::P1_BEACH:%25 Looks like Milwaukee County is currently safe for swimming. It seems that the smell is better the further you get away from the harbor. But this is just based on my own observation. For example, Grant Park and Doctors Park are much better than Bradford Beach. Perhaps this is because it is further from the runoff from the rivers or there's less boat traffic. But I love Grant Park. It's probably my favorite beach in the county and I would recommend it for swimming.
  11. Of course, the problem with this comparison is that people do go to football games in the snow. Football has always had a very different attitude toward extreme weather, as have football fans. But if Rangers fans aren't coming out when it's really hot, it's a legitimate concern for the franchise. Is there any other MLB stadium as far south as them without at least a retractable roof?
  12. I think something that all three of these situations have in common (Gamel, Lucroy, Cain) is that there is/was at least one other player in the mix with similar long-term value and need for playing time. It's hard to argue now that playing McGehee at 3rd was not the right decision, since he too was a rookie (albiet an older one). Similar situation with Kottaras, as he was hitting very well to begin the season and under team control for a while. Playing Cain either means sitting Braun (not going to happen), Hart (all-star, prime trade bait) or Gomez (hitting poorly, but big upside and need for consistent playing time). I wasn't mad at Macha when Gamel and Lucroy weren't being played, and I won't be mad if Cain isn't played. If anyone is at fault, it's Melvin. But what should we be mad at him about? Packing the team with too much young talent? It simply is what it is.
  13. look out for the $35 a month offer from Time Warner. If it's the same one that I got from broadbandoffers.com, they're going to give you a $90 dollar modem for "free" with a mail-in rebate. The modem wasn't actually compatible (I use the standard free one that Time Warner provides instead) and the rebate process is kind of complicated and easy to screw up. I got my rebate after many months, but I read many statements from people online saying that they didn't get theirs. So beware. I was still happy with my Time Warner service, but frustrated with that particular offer.
  14. I wouldn't read any more into MA's comments than the PR speak that they represent. Honestly, what do you expect him to say? "Sorry folks. We're pretty much done this year, so let's cut our losses and get ready to win again in a year or two." I'll certainly give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise. After all, he made his fortune off of real estate. I'm sure he knows how to sell high on something valuable. The Brewers are in a good bargaining position right now. They don't have to trade Hart of Fielder, so they can let teams try to blow them away if they really want to make a deal. I'm sure he'd authorize a trade for the right price, but why not act like he has every intention of keeping his talent?
  15. I was actually going to post the same thing! What I like about Arnett is that he wouldn't necessarily be just another "dumb boss" type replacement. He could play a character more like he does on 30 Rock, the rutheless do-anything-to-succeed type. Also, if Parks and Rec doesn't make it past its next season, that show is overflowing with great actors who could be snagged for The Office.
  16. If we were in the playoff hunt, I think Narveson in the rotation over Bush would be a no-brainer. But we're not, and they need to give Bush starts hoping that he'll catch the eye of a potential trade partner. And Parra is finally starting to find his stride, so it would be a shame to mess with him again. And it would reduce Narveson's innings pitched this year, which could be beneficial. It seems like the most logical move to make for the time being, but hopefully it would only be a short-term one.
  17. You should call the Wisconsin Humane Society. I know you referenced their web site, but a personal call would help answer your questions. They deal with this stuff all of the time. I think constant bright lights and/or a constantly playing radio could help, if these aren't distracting to you. The key is just to make it an unattractive place for them to stay. I know that's a common, humane way to encourage rodents to leave a nest that's built in your house.
  18. It might make sense to move Narveson to the pen temporarily just to reduce the number of pitches he throws this season. Then hopefully they can move either Bush or Davis at the deadline and get him back in the rotation.
  19. I agree. This could be a good thing, though. They now have an entire season to wrap up Michael Scott. Having a definite direction should be very good for the show, which felt a little unsure of what to do with its characters last year (especially Michael).
  20. Not in the short term, in the long term. Yo and the rest of the team may very well have been upset in the moment, but if it increases their chances of winning Yo's next start (or next few starts), then it's worth doing.
  21. I understand the point about the human element and keeping your players happy. However, I'd argue that increasing your chances of winning more games is a good way to keep players happy, but that may require some tough decisions in the short term, like pulling your ace when he's dominating in low-pressure innings. Maybe Yo would have been upset in the short term, but I think it's a calculated risk. I'm sure he'd be more upset if he lost his effectiveness the next outing or even gotten hurt. I think good managers do have to consider keeping their players happy, but they also need to know when what they want is not what's best for the team (or even for them). It's a tough call, but I think taking Yo out probably would have been the right decision.
  22. I think this is absolutely right that Jackson got lucky. The fact that his control was so off and he didn't manage to give up any homeruns or extra base hits is an impressive gift from lady luck. But it's always fun to celebrate when players beat the odds. If this had been Randy Wolf's pitching line, we'd probably all be geeking out about it.
  23. Let's quit blaming the manager. Hart and Braun are outfielders because there was no place else to put them, not because they belong there. They both bombed out at third base. They were drafted for their offense and not their gloves. Same for Fielder and Weeks. This team was drafted around good hitting with defense as an afterthought. We can't expect Macha, Randolph, Sveum, or anyone to fix that problem. But how bad of a problem is it, really? Would we rather have a great defensive team who can't score any runs? Would we have gotten to the playoffs without Braun and Fielder? No way. I'm not saying that defense isn't important, but I think all of these guys produce many more runs than they give up.
  24. I'd bet a lot of Leno's previous viewers watched the Tonight Show just because they always did. When all the change happened, they simply got out of the habit of watching it and probably won't go back.
  25. Parra's starting to become a bright spot. I hope they have the good sense to keep him starting. He's looking like a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy. He's been their second best starter the last few weeks. If Wolf can get it together, this rotation may not be beyond hope the next couple of years.
