  1. So I guess the lineup for tomorrow will likely feature Ginter over Helms, Spivey, Hall over Counsell, Overbay at 1b, and Grieve in RF (although I like the matchup vs the sinkerballer with Clark)
  2. XIS^3, just adding a point on why I'm so high on Capuano. He pitched in the same infields in El Paso and Tucson as Webb, so there's a chance he could exceed all of those projections if he proves to be a groundball pitcher (in 2003 he favored GO, in 2004 so far it's FO). So his ERA's would have been lower if not for the extreme offensive parks. Just something to think about.
  3. With the D-Backs at 4-9 does anyone think Bob Brenly is looking over his shoulder to see if Donald Trump is looking for him? deeswan, you're not the first to make that claim (although the Trump part is from you). When Melvin went to Seattle, many insiders with the club immediately speculated that the Dbacks would suffer last year. Apparently Melvin's organization and preparedness was what helped make Brenly appear a great up-and-coming manager. That's why this year they made Yount the bench coach. Apparently Robin's preparedness and general knowledge is very highly regarded throughout the game, and they felt that having him as a right-hand man would help Brenly. Think of it as how Democrats praised Bush's decision to take Cheney as a running mate (although now parts of the left are attacking Cheney, as they should be in an election year...it's easy to forget how they applauded the VP nomination for Cheney). At the same time, it comes down to their hitters not hitting and their pitchers not pitching. They are a more than capable team though.
  4. It's kind of unfortunate that we hurt Alomar, because in the early going it meant that they had Alomar, Finley, and Hillenbrand all scuffling. Kata and/or Tracy will jump in and provide some instant offense and energy for them, and that's not what I want to see when we are facing Randy and Webby. Once again, while I like what we got in the Sexson trade, it sure would have been nice if the Dbacks had accepted our offer last May that included Webb.
  5. Mass, when I saw Chavez last June, he showed absolutely terrible range and a mediocre arm. Based on what I saw, if you put him, Loretta, and Counsell together on a field (at the same age, that is), Lo and Craig would have easily looked superior, despite both slipping under the prospect radar to have productive careers. I talked with Mike Linskog (can't remember his last name exactly...my best guess) and he said that Chavez had looked terrible all year, displaying none of the skills he was known for in Beloit
  6. I have no idea why Gonzalez doesn't just have his season ending surgery and be done with it. He is going to end up costing his team a lot of runs with his gimpy arm and I have to think that it will affect his bat sooner or later. so his potential to hit .300+ with 30-40 homers isn't enough reason? He'll play all season if he can, and sometime in October he'll have Tommy John surgery. Then he should be ready by Opening day.
  7. If Krynzel can't walk to compensate for the strikeouts then it becomes an issue I can't complain about Krynzel much. I knocked his stance and swing in the Fall League, but he has walked in about 1/10th of his PA's at every level, and generally he has struck out less the more he's seen a level. If you assume he plays a full year in Indy, it's very possible he could walk 80 times and strike out 120. For a 22 year old in AAA, that's not bad. Hopefully in year 2 in AAA (probably half a season) he can cut that down to 1:1 or even better.
  8. Good to see Hinton doing fairly well. Now that he's healthy, playing in High Desert and the CA league could help him find his stroke and put him on the prospect radar for corner OF.
  9. Where are those who claimed he was an above average CF? I am one, but maybe I'm just excited by watching him and comparing him to the prior CF. I used to joke that a great advertisement for a video game would be having a linebacker running at a running back, then diving the wrong way. Then the commercial could say "our new game is so smart, it won't allow these foolish mistakes to happen." Watching Alex Sanchez on a nightly basis was like that. So much speed, but so few instincts. I admit that Pods has looked poor lately, but in Miller Park against the Astros he ran down a lot of line drives that could have been gappers. His problem as of now is going back on balls, but coming in or balls to his sides he's fine. I can't fault him for balls hit 415 feet on a line in heavy winds, though.
  10. although edod, we haven't had a moment yet where we've said "we need a lefty." I'd have Adams, M. Childers, Wise, and Santos ahead of Michalek, especially if we want someone who can start
  11. I wonder if Clemens actually gets to 90 pitches shutting out the Brewers? will Clemens throw a perfect game, or just a no hitter?
  12. Thats also a sign of injury. I don't want to speculate though. I doubt it. He threw in the mid 90s and got hurt. He's been pitching with the new ligament for just over a year now. I think what Cappy does is that he likes to change speeds. As he gets the old velocity back, he'll probably dial it up more, but until then his 89 mph heater won't fool too many.
  13. He throws a 92 mph sinker and has a good slider and curve when they are located well. Kinney's problem continues to be location, both in and out of the strike zone You summed it all up there. terrible command. terrible mentality. Great stuff.
  14. why an earned run? So Lamb gets to third with one out. he scores on an error. Then the next two batters get out. How is that an earned run for Hernandez? EDIT: nevermind, I see the gametracker fixed it
  15. I was just thinking, shouldn't Neugy be throwing another inning soon? Maybe tonight?
  16. I've been a huge Hendrickson supporter for a while, especially after claiming he's was easily the best pitcher in the Fall League (from my limited games). However given his injury history, I would kind of like to see us wait till June 1st to call up up, so that he'll have 8-10 starts under his belt. Plus, do we want to call him up and have him pitching only every once in a while (with all our days off), or would we rather call up Wise and shift Burba/Kieschnick 5th spot (when needed)? Either way, Kinney should be done in the rotation. He needs to earn his way back.
  17. I really don't like the thought of Matt Kinney in that ballpark. He simply cannot finish hitters, and those 0-2 and 1-2 homers he gives up don't bode well for games in Minute Maid
  18. Doug will be fine in the long run as a #5 starter. The key is that we need the others to step up ahead of him.
  19. JSonline is reporting that Phelps has been activated in AAA, with Matt Parker being released. Interesting move given his past success
  20. Mass, I would assume the program for Neugy is a work in progress. If he's throwing fairly well, showing good mechanics, and getting results, then they'll modify things. I seem to recall Doug Melvin or one of the other front office guys saying they would love to see him work it to about 60 pitches per outing by the end of the season
  21. Nice to see Krynzel's 2 walks and steal. Hart with a 3-game hitting streak to open his time in AAA. And also doesn't that mean Prince's first hit at each level has been a homer? Also, usatoday.com lists that as Jason Childers' first save. Baseball America credited the first one to Matt. So perhaps they have no set closer, with late inning duties being shared by both Childers brothers and Adams
  22. Ben said he threw all 4 seamers. If they are all unhittable and topping off aroung 95-97 mph I really don't care if he throws no-seamers. By no means RyDogg66 was I meaning to criticize Ben. I love it when he throws that hard. What I mean is that he won't always look as dominant as he did today, and on those days, being willing to utilize the 2-seamer could be beneficial. And my criticism of the changeup is not that I don't like it. I really like seeing it, especially how it fools hitters for strike three. But it'd be nice if he threw something in the high 70s. Great one today. Hard to dominate the Astros hitters like he did.
  23. I can't remember the last time I saw Sheets pitch that well... might be never. One knock I had on Ben last year was that he rarely "dialed it up" to the mid to upper 90s. We all knew he could do it, but he tended to try to be too fine with the 90 mph heater. I didn't like hearing them talking about how he had scrapped the 2seamer. I think a combination of the two is better. It also is a little unnerving that his changeup and curve were both coming in at 83 mph. He needs more variety
  24. Pods has looked great in CF covering ground this year, but right there on Ausmus' liner, he looked a lot like Sanchez
