  1. adambr2, thanks for the numbers. When I did a little work in baseball, minor leaguers were provided with apartments either by the team, or at an extreme discount. Often many players would live in the same apartment complex. Hopefully it's fully paid for these days.
  2. Taking bus rides to games with armed guards isn't the greatest situation. Problem is that these guys make more in 2 months playing down there than they did playing all year here. MLB needs to step up and pay the minor league guys a decent wage to make a living. I have always wondered if MLB continues drug testing of players in the Winter Leagues. Guys playing in winter leagues has little to do with money. They play for the love of their country and because their big league club wants them to get more PT. Not sure how you can come up with that. Players often get decent salaries during winter leagues. For minor leaguers making $2-4k per month, getting a salary and living stipend to play in another country can be as lucrative as their season in the minors.
  3. A century ago that would have been true, but the population center has shifted considerably. A quick google search showed me this: Eastern Standard Time Zone: 150.2 million (47.1%) Central Standard Time Zone: 92.3 million (29.0%) Mountain Standard Time Zone: 21.3 million (6.7%) Pacific Standard Time Zone: 53.0 million (16.6%) That's like when I was a freshman in college in California, and someone asked me what the weather was like in the east this time of year. I said I had no idea, I was from the midwest. You mentioned east coast bias, but then you backed it up by mentioning the Eastern time zone, which includes Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Arizona and Nevada aren't west coast
  4. A century ago that would have been true, but the population center has shifted considerably.
  5. I'd love to bring in Lucroy on a 1 year deal. He could split time with Pina, play a little 1b/DH, and hopefully rebuild value. I'll bet he goes somewhere to start full time though
  6. I still don’t know why this is a big deal to some people. Despite the media never reporting it, JJ Hardy has had a very nice career with a golf-like grip (thumbs straight down the bat). As a scratch golfer, it’s something I’ve always noticed.
  7. The challenge with Hader is that currently not only does he basically only throw fastballs, but he almost never hits his spots. In some ways he's like an early 90's Randy Johnson. The question is if his stuff will play as tough in innings 1-5 or in innings 6-7. I would like to try him as a starter, but wouldn't mind another year of him in the pen to hone his approach and work on hitting spots.
  8. No it's not hard to justify. You're thinking this would be a new tax, but it's not. The greater area passed a tourism tax solely for the building and renovating of sports stadiums like spring training cites. The problem is that the Cubs stadium, Dodgers stadium, Indians stadium, etc all were so expensive that they used up all the funds for years to come.
  9. Humans need water, people frequently express concerns about the neighborhood. For example, recently I was discussing GCU golf course, and people expresssed they wished it were in a better neighborhood.
  10. The mid-round picks have hurt lately. Gone are the days of nailing players with multiple years at good-to-star level production in the middle of the draft. Thinking of so many receivers, linemen, etc.
  11. I'm still amazed that MM is calling plays. Tom Clements statistically ran a more effective, more creative offense but got sacked for having a poor record. McCarthy is nothing special as a play caller, rather he needs Rodgers playing great to win. When Rodgers has had poor stretches, his lack of creativity has hurt the team. It's ridiculous how many plays were called on Monday night in which the primary receiver was to catch the ball behind the line of scrimmage. Every time an NFL opponent throws a WR screen, I thank them for giving away a down. Why did we attempt all sorts of quick plays designed to gain no more than 1 yard? They need to turn Hundley loose and let him attempt a quick passing attack rather than try to hide him.
  12. They aren't gone necessarily. They are just testing the free agency waters like they are allowed to (and should) do.
  13. What a great pitcher. It sounds like a great human as well. Should make the Hall of Fame. Terrible loss though Off topic, but does he still hold the record for highest ERA by a starting pitcher with enough innings, or did Wily surpass him?
  14. is this meant for basketball or for all areas? The purpose of college is to increase human capital, which should result in higher future earnings. Anyone not choosing to utilize college to better themselves and their situation is making a terrible mistake. For a college basketball player, the goal should be to learn, get stronger, and perform in such a way as to increase their earning potential, including draft position.
  15. That doesn't make sense. Tucson is 2-2.5 hours away from the Phoenix locations. That's longer than most Florida trips
  16. One idea I kind of liked from 3-4 years ago on CNN was a proposal to have 2 time zones. It could make sense for business, travel, and other reasons. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/12/tech/cnn10-ideas/
  17. Good point Nate. My point remains though that any idea of adding teams to the east coast prior to adding to Portland, Vancouver, Vegas, etc...seems to be a little shortsighted if one of the main issues is travel. Adding a natural rival for Seattle, who is so distant from any other team, in Portland would be excellent, assuming the desire for baseball and the economics work out. Actually, Phoenix is always in MST, which is the same as PDT. Phoenix never observes PST
  18. I really like the idea. I've argued for a decade that we should have MLB expand to 32 teams, although I've wanted 8 divisions with 4 teams each. If they want to keep an NL/AL differential, why not have one league bat 9 (with DH) and the other bat 8 (no DH, no pitcher)? My lists have long been New York, Portland, Las Vegas, Boston, Montreal, Charlotte, San Antonio, and maybe Calgary. I think the Mitchell Report called for expansion or moving franchises to New York, New York, LA, Portland, etc (yes, NY could support more teams)
  19. As would I. I visit Vegas several times a year. Any rumors of this?
  20. This seems ridiculous to me. Sure he had a career year, but high avg, high obp, some pop, and defensive versatility. He helped save our season. He’s unproven, but he was VERY good this year
  21. tmwiese55, I understand Prince can always be insured. But if the policy costs too much, then it's generally not worth it. Insuring his back was likely a costly endeavor for the Tigers and/or Rangers. Prince was an extremely obese baseball player with an extremely violent swing. 5'10" and 300 lbs.
  22. I'm sure they gave the insurance companies a small discount on the settlement. even $500k or $1M is a savings. What I'm curious about is why the insurance companies were willing to insure Prince, especially his back. If I gain 5 lbs, I can feel it. He was the heaviest sub 6' player in MLB history.
  23. When was the last time a Cardinals free agent starter succeeded elsewhere?
  24. I'm with Cool Hand Lucroy, as I think Thames is a work-a-holic that will spend his off-season analyzing his flaws to improve. Do I expect a star? no. But .260 avg 25-30 hr, and nice OBP is nothing to sneeze at
