It's inherent in the labels. Quite literally FIP means the quality of the Brewers pitchers with an average defense behind them...but by design the Brewers DO NOT have an average defense behind them. ELITE defense IS a game winning thing that the Brewers have been ahead of the curve on after the boomball steroid/juiced ball eras. The new moneyball in the last 8 years or so has been defense (RIP Keston Hiura).
ESPN has really screwed this up the past 8 years. It just doesn't work now with the pitch clock. Before, they had 30-45 seconds to kill between pitches. It just shouldn't be done now unless it's just "mic'd up" with no earpiece/questions asked.
Well, it's not like they are hitting off a pitching machine...i.e. Everybody rakes against bad pitching and everybody gets shut down by good pitching...
