  1. There is a big difference between "your" top prospect, and the top prospect in the entire League. Peralta and Thornburg are nice prospects, but that's it. There are hundreds of guys in the minors just like them. There aren't a hundred guys like Profar.
  2. Well "the bullpen" is a bit of a misnomer. The "average" numbers are bad, but they would be more tolerable if there were even ONE pitcher the team could rely on to hold a lead. A bullpen that makes a 2-5 deficit into a 3-9 loss isn't really a big deal, but makes the "average" numbers look bad. A bullpen that makes a 5-2 lead turn into a 6-5 loss is a gigantic detriment to the team, and that is basically what the Brewers bullpen has been this year. In summary, Axford and Krod have been horrible, which is monumentally more significant than Dillard, Parra, Estrada and Loe being bad (which is too bad, because some of these guys are actually having okay seasons). Situation matters, but the "average" doesn't take it into account.
  3. According to Gameday, Thornburg was sitting at 90-93 most of the game. In the last AB where he walked Freese he dialed it up to 96. That just seems odd, unless there was a glitch somewhere.
  4. It would be nice if the kid could get through this inning and be in line for a W. I'm not optimistic, though.
  5. Not really. It's just that the bullpen has easily been the most disappointing aspect of the season so far. It was supposed to be a strength and has turned into the biggest weakness. There really isn't anybody else to blame. Weeks stunk for 2+ months and Ramirez stunk for a month and a half, but they have both turned it around. Then there is all of the injuries, and the bullpen. Everybody else has been great or has played as expected (other than Wolf, but he wasn't really counted on as a strength). In addition, Maldonado, Aoki, Fiers, and Estrada have played well enough that only Gonzalez' injury has had a significant affect on the team. When nearly HALF of your losses come from the bullpen, that's bad news.
  6. Boy, it would be nice to have a reliable bullpen in a game like this. Last year, these kinds of games were awesome since it always seemed like the Crew would win. This year....
  7. Well, a hit IS better than a walk, so if two players have an identical OBP, it makes sense to value the one with a higher batting average, as long as the difference in power isn't too great. Even then, it seems like 3TO players are mistake hitters who flourish against bad pitchers. When a pitcher misses his spot, he either walks the guy or gives up a dinger, while when he makes his pitches, the guy strikes out. They have a harder time fouling off good pitches in order to get their pitch or even making good contact on a pitcher's pitch. Generally, guys with high batting averages but lower walk rates are better at this skill, and are more valuable when trying to drive in runs late in the game against a good relief pitcher.
  8. I'll say we get swept by the Pirates, trade Greinke, KRod and Morgan, then go on to sweep the Reds and the Cardinals which would leave us in the very weird position of being a buyer after we already sold. We pick up a little help at the deadline and go on to sneak into the playoffs and proceed to make a miracle run to the World Series behind Gallardo, Fiers, and Thornburg. We win today AND build for tomorrow. Now that's what I call optimism. .
  9. I'd say that the entire Pirates team is suspect outside of McCutcheon and Hanrahan. Do they even have another player on the roster that is above average? Do you want to rely on James McDonald, AJ Burnett and Kevin Correia? I don't think I'd trade any player on the Brewers for their counterpart on the Pirates except for our CF platoon for McCutcheon. It can't and won't last. Hopefully I don't eat my words this weekend.
  10. If everybody on the team plays up to their capabilities though the end of the season, I think the playoffs are within reach. That basically means Yo, Grienke, and the bullpen need to be lights out good which they can be, and Wolf needs to revert to last season's form. The offense has basically performed as expected in the last month, with Weeks and Ramirez turning it around a little bit. Getting Lucroy back and having him hit .300 would be a plus as well. All that said, it isn't likely to happen, but it certainly isn't impossible with the extra playoff slot this year.
  11. In order to be in the HOF, you have to have at least around 3-5 seasons where you were the best player in the league at your position. I don't think Konerko has ever even been that once. As others have stated, he just has never had a dominating year where he was even in real contention for MVP honors. If he were a defensive whiz and a model citizen who the press absolutely loves I'd give him an outside shot. He certainly doesn't get any national buzz for that kind of thing though.
  12. Well, Cappy might make it back this year! What a road it's been for that guy. He would look pretty good in that 5 slot right now...
  13. I would think that Providence, Brooklyn or New Jersey, North Carolina and Portland could all support a MLB team pretty easily. Breaking up the TV markets in the NE would be one heck of a chore, though. There would be an incredible amount of blowback from the other 3 teams up there. It only makes competitive sense, though.
  14. Overreact much? With Gamel, Gonzalez, and a normal Weeks and Ramirez this is a playoff team. The injuries combined with a lack of depth combined with under-performing all-star caliber players has made for some ugly games recently, but it's not nearly as bad as what everybody is making it out to be right now. I know there was a lot of complaints about the bench even before the slow start, and those complaints are somewhat justified, but you can only do so much as a small market team. If there are going to be weak points on the roster, I want them to be on the bench. It just so happened that injuries have turned the bench into the starting lineup and made the bench that much worse. It'll get better.
  15. Can we trade Morgan already? Aoki is the same player, only better, IMO. We should have traded him before the season started. Not sure what kind of value he has, but there are enough holes on the roster that I would think we could improve somewhere.
  16. Just got here... are these lyrics to song I'm not familair with??? Bravo, bravo.
  17. Having enough experience to be able to more accurately predict what pitch is coming and developing a better batter's eye/idea of the strike zone. Being able to make adjustments very quickly and accurately based on past patterns. Stuff like that. Still, Weeks hit great for the first half of last year and that was after surgery on both his wrists. His ankle issue at the end of the year shouldn't really have any affect on his swing. I think he'll come around.
  18. I was always patient at the plate in T-ball. I took my time adjusting the telescoping ball rest until it was just right, often to the chagrin of the jeering, impatient crowd. I didn't have the best walk rate, but I always got my pitch.
  19. I hope tonight is the night that the bullpen decides to turn it around.
  20. Green hung in there nicely against some tough curveballs. Good approach-- and then he whiffs on the meat fastball. ugh.
  21. It sure would be nice to go at least 9-4 over the next 2 weeks before another difficult West Coast swing. If we are hovering around .500 by the end of the month we could really make a nice push during the soft part of the schedule in the first half of June.
  22. Why can't Braun play 1st? Rest his bum leg and keep him in the lineup. We have decent backup outfielder options as well. Stick Green at 2nd for Rickie.
  23. I hope that balls and strikes are always called by human umps. I like the fact that if a catcher is set up an inch off the outside corner and the pitcher nails that spot exactly without making the catcher move his glove at all it is often called a strike. I also like that if the catcher is set up in that same spot but has to reach all the way across the plate to catch a ball that just nicks the black on the inside corner, that it is often called a ball. A pitcher should be rewarded for being intentionally precise with his pitches. A computer would completely take that away.
  24. His best hot streak? it was a 2 month period of time that corresponded almost exactly with the time period that people are saying he should have been benched. The point was that Roenicke stuck with him and he produced during that time when most around here thought he should have benched him.
