  1. The needed bench bat could be Shaw. Saladino is a slight downgrade downgrade from Perez. There needs to be 2 guys on the roster capable of playing SS though, and generally backup SS can't hit a lick unless they are horrible at SS. If a guy can play a decent SS and is a decent bat he's a starter.
  2. It's almost as if it can change inning by inning, out by out depending upon who is on the mound There are enough talented arms to be good overall.
  3. Lots of people do know how to measure it...or say they do and think they do. It makes sense to me to bat a high OBP and high SLG guy 2nd (Yelich). Once he is in place it makes sense to put the pitcher 8th. For as many times it is annoying that the pitcher bats 8th and ends the inning, the same number of times that will actually be beneficial since he won't be leading off the next inning, which gives a decent hitter the chance to get on base in front of Yelich. No stats nor history nor analytics. Just common sense.
  4. I don't like the back to back lefties, especially when they won't be pinch hit for (Yelich and Moose). Putting Grandal or Braun or Hiura between them makes the most sense. The best lineup SHOULD be: Cain Yelich Grandal Moose/Thames Braun/Hiura Thames/Moose Braun/Hiura Arcia/Saladino P Yelich, Moose and Thames should be batting 1-3-5 or 2-4-6 in some combination.
  5. Another factor in Saladino playing instead of Arcia could be to keep things comfortable for Hiura defensively. He's played next to him all year so they are probably more in tune with each other on making turns at 2B.
  6. The evidence is that Arcia was benched two days in a row. There are a million reasons why this could be, and not all of them are directly baseball related. That isn't to say there is or isn't a non-baseball reason, but I trust Counsel to make the right decision either way, and if it is not a prolonged issue I see no particular reason why fans need to know every single specific reason why someone is not in the starting lineup. Do people have issue with how Saladino played yesterday? Or the last 3 months in SA? I'm not seeing what Arcia done that is better than Tyler right now.
  7. Oddly, if the Brewers win the last 2 they'd finish June with a .500 record. I've been hanging out in the IGTs too much as that seems impossible.
  8. Saladino has turned 4 baserunners or errors into unlikely outs tonight.
  9. I just want to be within 1 in the bottom half
  10. Nice pro AB by Braun. Fought off some tough pitches and shortened up with two strikes to hit a bullet.
  11. He's hitting .353 against the league. I don't think he's ever hit under .300 in his life.
  12. I'm not sure how neither Newman nor Reynolds got much hype as prospects. Guys are studs.
  13. Nice stop and footwork...then rushed the throw. Generous scoring decision after doing most of the hard work on the play quite well.
  14. I generally highly dislike magic boxes that you throw names into and it spits out numbers back at you...gives me the heeby jeebies.
  15. LOL. It's not just about the estimated value. It's about timing and risk as well The Rays are pretty well stacked except for at C, and Grandal is among the elite C in the league--hole plugged. Hader is the most dominant relief force this league has seen in years. For a team with WS aspirations that kind of dominance has more value than just the numbers would suggest. Both Hader and Grandal are about as sure things as you can get at the two positions the Rays need most to win a WS (have they ever done that before?). Meanwhile, The Rays are already a super young team with an absolutely loaded farm system. As a previous poster said, they'd be giving up 3 guys who haven't even even played AA ball and a guy who will be coming back from injury next year after 2 years of not pitching. There is a very real possibility the Brewers would get 0 return from any of the 4 guys for 2 sure thing MLB guys who would significantly upgrade their chances at a WS title. And they'd have Hader for 4 more years! The RISK in this trade would be all on the Brewers side, and the TIMING could not be any better for the Rays to do something like this (although it is not their normal MO). If I'm a that mythical Rays fan out there I think I'd do this in a heartbeat rather than preserve my farm system ranking for another year+. It's not off the rails crazy from either side, anyway.
  16. I was thinking along those same lines. Did they need a 40-man roster spot for either an impending trade/transaction, or are they possibly promoting Trent Grisham to the 40-man roster? I just think they are rewarding/promoting Saladino for his excellent year at AAA. Perez has been poor and was out of options. Perez wasn't worth his salary at this point and almost certainly would have been non-tendered unless he somehow could put up a .350/.450 line or so from here on out. Dubon and Spangenberg provide extra depth in case they lose Perez. It was time.
  17. Saladino deserved a promotion as well. With the way that entire SA lineup has hit this year I'll be surprised if Shaw can't OPS near 1.000 in the next few weeks.
  18. Interesting. With Dubon in the picture as well Hernan's time seemed to be getting short. I hope he clears waivers and accepts his assignment. He has never shown enough to really be sorely missed, but he sure knows how to play the game.
  19. You want to give up on the entire season for 4 guys who aren't even out of A ball? Losing Hader leaves CC with zero closing options and losing Grandal severly limits an already shakey offense. Honeywell isn't even going to start pitching again until sometime next year! I doubt the Rays clean out the farm for a reliever and a rental anyways. I don't WANT to, no, but if the next 3 weeks prove that a WS isn't likely to happen this year, I can't see how it's going to happen next year either. Extend Yelich, trade Hader and build around Yelich, Hiura, Franco?, Turang? and a wealth of young pitchers with TOR potential. If I thought we could extend Moose and/or Grandal AND sign someone like Gerrit Cole next year then obviously I'd want to keep Hader. I just don't see that happening--and if it DOES happen and it doesn't work out we'll be stuck with a ton of bad untrade-able veteran contracts and a middling farm system. That is my biggest worry.
  20. It's purely a loyalty thing now. I think when we traded for Moustakas last year and Shaw moved to 2nd base (and basically took a platoon role) he was slighted a bit after having an excellent 2017 and a decent first half of 2018. He did what was best for the team and moved to 2nd base. Then we re-signed Moustakas and he did the flip-flop with Shaw moving back to 3rd, and his role has been (rightfully) diminished even more. You can call it "hurt feelings" if you want, but it's also just good organizational practice to stand by your veterans who have been very productive for you. The timing just couldn't be worse for this kind of thing though with Hiura being ready and the team smack dab in the middle of a pennant race.
