Seems like there must be something going on with Sam Carlson. Really surprised he is still floating out there and the Twins passed him up twice at #35 and #37.
Each pick has a slot value for signing bonuses. Players can cut deals with teams so they can get drafted higher. Signing for underslot leaves the team with a bigger portion of their bonus pool which allows them to spread it out more throughout the draft. If some sites like Baseball America and Bleacher Report had him picked as high as 5th or 6th in their mock drafts, why would he agree to a lesser bonus that what his draft slot calls for? Those sites projected he would go that high based on projected under slot deals. The highest most mocks picked him without citing a "deal" being made was around #15.
Romero would be amazing. Take Hiura underslot, and give Romero mid-first $ to sign. Am I correct that his off-field stuff was all nonsense like being photographed with a a bong? The most public reason for his dismissal was fighting with a teammate or teammates. Also reportedly some teams were turned off by the answers they received during the in-person interviews with him.
Will be interesting if the Brewers force Hiura to take care of the elbow immediately (and likely miss the remainder of the season) or if they let him DH for a few months. Have to guess they will focus on the elbow first. Edit: And part two will be whether he has TJ surgery versus trying the PRP injections again.
I don't want to over do it here (probably too late), but Hiura looks like a perfect #2 hole hitter in a potent lineup. I think they found a guy who could be a key piece to a very good offensive lineup.
Projected to sign for less than slot value which in the case of the Brewers is $4,570,000. So if he signs for under that slot value they can allocate the money towards other selections.
If I had to pick five players that I would bet on to become All-Stars from this draft I would include Hiura. The arm is not a concern for me since the guy is a future 2nd baseman. I think he is going to be a major league extra base hitting machine.
Assuming the Phillies take Haseley here are my favorite six options remaining for the Brewers in order... 1) Shane Baz 2) JB Bukauskas 3) Keston Hiura 4) David Peterson 5) Trevor Rogers 6) Jordon Adell
Saw that Jim Callis reported that Brendan McKay turned down an offer from the Twins to go 1.1. Curious to compare what type of offer he turned down versus what he is going to get paid when he gets drafted.
Some of the draft experts seem to believe he is just posturing for financial leverage. Can't imagine a team will take him in the top 15 unless they are fairly certain he is going to sign. The downside is that he isn't likely going to be accepting any below slot deals unless he goes in the top few picks.
I would be on board with this, but for Ramos to fall there would it likely have to be an over-slot deal at #34? Getting fired up for this draft to start!
It does seem like they have been quietly connected to Rogers for a while now which is why I went that direction with my prediction in our community mock. Haseley is interesting from the standpoint we have mostly assumed he would be off the board and haven't given him a lot of thought. Among guys not mentioned by Piliere here, I am still holding out a sliver of hope they are considering Shane Baz.
