  1. I've met and dealt with Crean as well and we're talking the overtanned, smug, almost used car salesman-esque, post 2003 Crean, right...? Crean when I first started at MU back in '99 was a young, hungry, approachable coach who you WANTED to succeed, especially in light of Mike Deane. Crean didn't have to be a sexy hire, especially given the way Deane trashed the program. Now, however, it's different. The program's returned to a decent level of success and has a lot of things going for it. With the building of the Al, for example, it's like giving a 16 year old who just got his license the keys to a nice sports car. I'm not at all saying Buzz Williams is a bad person. On the contrary - I was thrilled when Crean got him on his staff for precisely the reasons why you say you like him as a person. I AM, however, saying that this move smacks of desperation by MU, especially given the timeframe for his hiring.
  2. ... you wake up, you check Brewerfan. ... you come home from work, you check Brewerfan. ... you get ready for bed, you check Brewerfan.
  3. I'm pumped about going back for Round 2 myself in a few more years. At work today, I was actually going through my thesis since a LOT of the stuff I did then is very applicable to what I'm up to now. I really missed grad school at that point. But I agree - the being poor part wasn't that much fun, although I'm trying to figure out a way around that to get my employer to pick up the tab for the PhD...
  4. I think I threw up a little in my mouth just now. Why did they hire Buzz so quickly? This move smacks of desperation by MU to try and keep a semi-tenuous hold on a couple of 18 year old prima donnas. Count me out of donating to MU anytime soon. I'm sure a lot of other alumni share my sentiments and concern.
  5. Enjoy grad school while you can. It's the one time of my life that I wish went longer than it did. Anyways... today I worked. Tonight... I'll be pullin' the work laptop out shortly and - you guessed it - work some more. Of course, first I have to take the dog out on his nightly walk.
  6. Really? I'm hearing from the alumni that I talk to that Williams could affect their donating. I agree with what you're saying that MU cannot afford to be short-sighted, though. And honestly - I'm perfectly comfortable with losing James... where's he going to go? Europe?
  7. Yes it was. We at least had advance warning that Tom Crean was on MU's radar back in '99. Tom Crean back in '99 was hungry and approachable. Tom Crean in '08 is smug and tan.
  8. Crean followed after the uninspiring Mike Deane, who left the program in not-so-good condition. MU alumni and fans were pretty much willing to give anyone a chance since in their minds, the program had hit rock bottom. Now, with MU being in a much better (from top to bottom, no disrespect to Memphis intended) conference and with comparatively better talent in the program than what Deane had coming through, in addition to the huge expenditure known as the Al McGuire Center, the expectations are much higher. And it's now up to MU to figure out a way to deliver or risk taking a fairly sizable hit to their alumni donations.
  9. To me, the biggest indicator as to what direction ownership is leaning with Sheets can be found in the Braun/Fielder contract offer article: IMO that quote comes across as a diplomatic way of saying "we're not interested at this time. Good luck elsewhere, Benny."
  10. Not panic, for starters...? To many alumni, a hasty hiring of Buzz Williams would signify a panic move by Marquette rather than one that makes sense. I know a lot of donors would feel duped by MU after shelling out all that money to build the Al McGuire Center only to not find a coach of a "reasonable" stature to run the team. MU has other high price tag projects that they're looking to begin soon - a new law school and a new engineering building to name a couple - and I wouldn't be surprised to find MU come up suddenly short in donations if they don't hire a coach deemed by the alumni as "quality." There are still plenty of other coaches out there that MU could land - coaches that have done well at mid-majors and are looking to transition to a bigger/better conference would be better choices than Buzz Williams. It's just going to take a little more time than what MU was originally thinking/hoping.
  11. I'll be honest - if MU hires Buzz Williams you can count me out from donating back to MU anytime soon. I know a lot of the large donating alumni feel likewise. Hiring Buzz Williams is tantamount to waving the white flag and sacrificing your alumni over the whims of a couple of 18 year olds.
  12. Thanks for making me revisit Bad Chad. The Brewers' string of starting catchers over the past decade or so has set the bar pretty low. I'm not sold just yet on whether or not Melvin built the team that can take the pennant. Not to be Mr. Naysayer but didn't the Brewers go flying out of the gates last year as well...? Factors that will sell me on Doug Melvin: 1. Does Mike Cameron come back and provide decent offense and plus defense? 2. Is Gagne consistently effective? Even though it's for only 1 year, $10 M is still a good chunk to spend on a closer, proven or otherwise. 3. Does the rest of the reconstructed bullpen hold up over the course of the season? Factors 2 and 3 are the ones that will ultimately determine where the Brewers finish. If the answer to both of those is "no" then the Brewers are on the outside looking in yet again.
  13. Bottom of Page 2? Come on. I highly recommend going to Balzac for anyone that lives near Milwaukee's East Side. And not just for the drinks - their plates are really good too!
  14. Yay for Rickrolling! I've voted like 20 times in the past 5 minutes. I'm making sure all my friends do likewise. And making sure all their friends participate as well. The Mets deserve this!
  15. From what I've heard, those are the names that are being discussed thus far. There may be others but I'm not - of yet - aware of them. I guess we'll see where this heads. I know the trustees will be meeting... I'm guessing they may have a decision and are finalizing an offer.
  16. Another name that's been bandied about: Lon Kruger as a distant third choice. From what I understand, he's favored by non-alumni donors, whereas the others I've mentioned are favored by alumni donors.
  17. I'll reveal the two names that I've had confirmed to me as being in town: Sean Miller - stayed at the Pfister and had lunch with... The chair-throwing Bobby Knight at the Milwaukee Athletic Club Yes - the Bobby Knight.
  18. However... for as few "top tier" PGs as there are, there are even fewer "top tier" big men. If I'm building a team and *know* that I'm going to be in the lottery for a few years while doing so, I'll draft a big man who has the potential to do big things inside over a PG that will get us to the playoffs sooner but ultimately fail to carry us all the way without a viable big man presence. I think the thing is that we haven't seen a quality PG since at least Sam Cassell, and even his decisionmaking could be questioned at times. I loved how hard Sessions hustled down to get that. I loved even more the mischevious smirk on Coach K's face as he diagrammed that last play during the final timeout. You knew he was up to something there. I honestly had little doubt Sessions was going to take that shot, but Larry K outdid us all by running it first through Bogut. It's also nice to see a PG that, you know, actually minimizes the horrible ball-hogging and can distribute the ball all around the court. Even Bobby Simmons has looked quasi-serviceable with Sessions running the point. I heard the announcers saying that Mo was at half court right after that timeout screaming at someone... I think it was one of the assistant coaches. If that's true, wow... what a baby.
  19. Bogut has developed a ton this season. His potential is why I continue to support the Bucks' decision to take him first in 2005. As I've said before - teams that live on the perimeter don't stand a chance against teams that have solid inside-outside games in a 7-game playoff series. We saw all too well how living and dying by the jump shot worked for the Bucks back under George Karl. I'll pass on that happening again. I will admit that both Paul and Deron Williams have nice inside scoring options to compliment their outside playmaking. As I said earlier in this thread, if the Bucks drafted either of them, they'd be making the playoffs but... they'd be eliminated rather quickly due to a lack of an inside presence.
  20. Soup and Yost gave Kendall some major props when interviewed after the game: And Soup added:
  21. Hmm... Mo Williams benched for the 4th quarters for both last night and tonight. Bucks win. Coincidence? I think not.
  22. Well, he hasn't dated me, for starters. I bet Jenkins' "legend" has to do a bit with his resemblance to one Brett Favre...
  23. I've heard a rumor that IU did not ask MU for permission to talk to Crean. If true, given IU's already-long list of recent violations, you can count on them losing yet another scholarship. I wonder how much fun Crean will have with, oh, 8 scholarships per year for the next few seasons...
  24. I have heard this as well. The name I heard was mentioned earlier in this thread. I know, not much help...
  25. Don't torture me with such deliciousness, Brian! Speaking of Jenkins, he used to date my parents' next door neighbor. Needless to say, the lady's now-hubby is not terribly thrilled to hear Jenkins stories...
