  1. I could care less what he does at Nashville. He's not some young rookie who is doing well in the minors and we're anxious to get him to the big leagues to see what he can do. We know what he can do in the big leagues against big league pitching. Absolutely nothing. He can hit .600 in Nashville for all I care, because that won't change the fact that the dude can't hit a big league curveball to save his life.
  2. I guess the best way to explain it is this, I value OPS obviously as it takes OBP and SLG into account. I like to use OPS to separate levels of players in a certain range, but I just cant completely ignore batting average. I want to know how many times someone is going to get a hit when they don't walk. I guess when someone is hitting between .240-.280 range, I like to use OPS to determine what kind of production they are giving within their average batting average range. However, when someone is only hitting in the .220 range I just can't ignore that. I'm not saying I'm right or wrong. It's just how I feel.
  3. If Hall were to go down, I would suspect that Melvin would think in this order: 1. Joe Dillon to 3B 2. Abraham Nunez to 3B 3. Trade for a veteran 3B 4. Promote Branyan to give Counsell a day off once a week
  4. I don't have a problem with him. I just don't think he's any good. I do put a lot of stock in batting average. Right or wrong. I still think it's a valuable stat.
  5. That's what this discussion is. In my opinion, for what that's worth, he has absolutely no value to the Brewers. My point about 7 teams in 10 years is from a distance everyone sees the slugging percentage and OBP that you see, but then they get him and realize that regardless of the numbers, you just can't afford to have him on your roster, so they waive him, and onto the next team who thinks that things will be different with them. 7 Teams later, (I would assume the other 25 teams knew from the start that he was no good) and nobody wants him. Which is evidence that he has no value to a Brewers roster trying to contend for the NL Central.
  6. This has nothing to do with TGJ. I think he is nothing better than a 5th outfielder. I think most people would agree on that.
  7. Just for a start, his last 2 seasons have indeed stunk. He has played for 4 teams in 2 seasons and in over 400 AB's, he has a batting average of .212. An OBP of .320. I don't understand how people can't understand that there isn't one team in the entire league that thinks he's even good enough to be a part-time player. That's why he's in the minor leagues. Nobody wants him. He's not good enough. He never has been good enough. That's why he has played for 7 teams in 10 years.
  8. Branyan isn't with ANYBODY because everyone has better talent. The guy flat out stinks. I don't understand the obsession. It's like a cult.
  9. Another great thing about Branyan is his 10-year career batting average of .229 and his 755 career strikeouts. Sign me up.
  10. The moderators of any messageboard have it extremely hard. Having moderators with no rules is what makes so many messageboards worthless. You don't have to agree with every decision the moderators around here make, but brewerfan.net wouldn't be the greatest messageboard on the internet in any sport without them. They have their parameters and stick to their guns, despite having a lot of issues that could go either way. That is what makes this board great.

  12. If the team needs Branyan to have a meaningful at-bat this year, it will be because things have gone drastically wrong (performance-related, or injury-related). So we can only hope he leaves all his strikeouts down in the minors and off the big league field.
  13. Everyone manager makes move all year long that are scrutinized. The reason people hate Ned is because we are good now so moves are scrutinized more. Nobody cared what Trebelhorn, Garner, Lefebvre, Lopes, or Royster did cuz they stunk.
  14. Forgive me if this is obvious, but it appears from looking at the above that Riske threw 2 innings against the Cubs and then 1.2 against the Giants 3 days later, and then 2 against the Mets 6 days later. I guess I'm failing to see the 4th?
  15. If you live in Wisconsin the game will be blacked out on extra innings. No bar will have it on in Wisconsin. This only works for out-of-staters with the option to watch at a bar.
  16. Why on earth would we not talk about him in the Minor League Forum?
  17. Gagne and I wouldn' think twice. I like how Gagne has pitched so far.
  18. If you want to look smart in front of your boss, I recommend you agree with him on this one. Anyone who understands baseball sees that Gagne has pitched well, and just been touched be a few HR's and unlucky situations. He's a turned DP from weeks and a picnic area in right field at Miller Park away from leading the league in saves and converting on 8 out of his 10 saves. He's still one of the elite closers in the game and will continue to be this year, despite his early string of bad luck. So, if you want to look smart in front of your boss...I would change your tune on this topic, if I were you.
  19. So you are fully aware that between Fukodome's HR on opening day and Encarnacian's HR 9 appearances later that Gagne gave up 3 hits and a lone solo HR to Corey Patterson that landed in the picnic area instead of Corey Hart's glove because it's 10 feet shorter than it used to be. In those 8 innings, he saved 6 games. Gave up 3 hits (one of them a solo HR). I will look at the outing against the Cubs when Fukodome hit one out and the outing the other day when he gave up the back to back HR's as the abberation, while the other 8 outings the norm. He pitched great against the Cards yesterday. He struck out the lead-off hitter on a changeup that didn't get called strike 3. They he hits the guy in the elbow. He gives up a single just out of the reach of JJ Hardy, then proceeds to strike out Ankiel and get Pujols to ground into a game ending double play. Aside from the HR to Fukodome, and the back to back HR's to Encarnaceon and Bako, he's been lights out. I expect him to save 40 games this year. And expect him to continue to look dominant in doing so.
  20. That's good to hear! I wasn't doubting Riske, but rather saying since he already came into the game when it was 4-3 and got the last out of the 6th, I think Yost thought he was actually saving relief pitchers by letting him go the 7th and maybe 8th as well. I don't think he planned on Riske getting in trouble and Shouse getting in more trouble, etc.
  21. The problem was that Riske had already pitched in the 6th when it was 4-3. He had already warmed up and throw pitches, so even though it was 8-3, it made more sense to use him to pitch the 7th and hopefully not have to waste anyone else because he is thought to be the best bullpen arm by a lot of people. Then they could have used McClung or Turnbow when it was 8-3 in the 8th and 9th inning. The problem came when Riske gave up the double and two walks to load the bases and then they had to go to Shouse and then he gave up 3 singles. If Riske gets through the 7th inning. McClung or Turnbow probably pitches the 8th and or 9th.
  22. That's a great point about Turnbow. The problem is that they haven't had ANY blowouts lately. They've seen so many games tight and close late. Then he goes a week without pitching and has come into the blowout games and struggled, but I think there is some truth to the idea that he needs to find some consistency by pitching every few days for awhile, even if that means pitching in some close games.
  23. He didn't treat me with respect by ignorantly and condescendingly stating that 3 pitchers have accounted for all 60 innings pitched, when that wasn't even remotely accurate. I feel that is more disrespectful than what I said back.
  24. I think they are trying to see if he is going to be able to pitch in high-pressure situations this year or not, which is why they brought him into the tie game on Monday night. He continues to be a puzzle. They jumped his 2 fastballs for back to back doubles, but then he was as filthy has he's ever been getting the next 3 guys. That 1-out strikeout on the slider wasn't even fair. He could still be a very valuable piece to the bullpen as this year progresses. Maybe they were afraid to put him in the day after getting tagged with a loss because he seems to be so fragile mentally. If he blows an 8-3 lead (or gives up a handfull of runs that lead to someone else blowing it) it could damage him mentally. I think pitching him in close games and having him succeed could be the key to the bullpen's success this year.
  25. I know. I should have just linked. It actually looked normal, but it never transfers correctly when I use my wife's Mac computer. Oh well. You get the point. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gifhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
