  1. They have said they only view Villanueva as a starter. My guess as the two most likely scenarios are Parra to AAA or Parra to LR and McClung released, but I hope I'm wrong, because I really want Parra in the rotation. The one positive for people hoping for that is that Parra is a lefty. The real question is, how many starts can we realistically skip for Parra to limit his innings.
  2. 1. I wouldn't call it stupid 2. It is only over untill Gallardo comes back. Not a guarantee. The options, when Yo gets back are: Bush to long relief, McClung released Parra to AAA Parra to long relief, McClung released Villanueva to AAA They said Villanueva will only be a starter and will never be in the pen again. Personally, of all those options, I would take either Bush to LR and McClung released or Parra to long relief and McClung released. My ideal rotation is Sheets/Gallardo/Suppan/Villanueva/Parra, but I know they want to limit his innings.
  3. Where they are placed in the rotation isn't that relevant, what is more relevant is how talented/productive the rotation is as a whole. The reason they are placing Parra fifth is to skip him on occasion to limit innings.
  4. If you count Parra, Bush, Vargas, CV, Sheets, Suppan as our six viable options, then this is easily the best five out of those six. What will be very interesting is what happens when Yo gets back. I have been dreaming of a Sheets/Gallardo/Parra/Villanueva/Suppan rotation, but realize that is probably far fetched. We're going with our top five starters available though, I think that is what most people wanted.
  5. So, what happens when Gallardo returns? Parra to AAA I'm assuming. So in about three weeks, we're looking at: Rotation: Sheets Gallardo Suppan Villanueva Bush Bullpen: McClung Shouse Riske Mota Torres Turnbow Gagne That leaves us with one rotation replacement capable guy (Parra). If we have more than one rotation injury we're going to be filling it with absolute junk (likely someone worse than Vargas). That is the only reason I think we should have kept Vargas in the bullpen and not kept McClung. However, I am happy that Villy is in the rotation to start the year. There are thinks to like and dislike about this.
  6. Not having Vargas in the rotation is fine. Keeping McClung over him for the bullpen is not fine, for too many reasons to mention.
  7. Corey Hart. Guy is clutch and usually makes solid contact.
  8. Hill is no question better than Bush.
  9. This could be a blessing in disguise, because I think it forces Parra into the rotation (he's earned it, he's done everything they have asked up to this point and more). Villanueva is a lock. That leaves the last spot to start the year between Bush and Vargas. Personally, I'll take Bush there.
  10. Who gets the last bench spot? Dillon did well for us last year, Gapler has played well on both sides in spring training (Dillon has hit well as well). My gut says they go with Dillon since he proved something on the ML level last year, but wouldn't be upset either way. I think Gross, Gwynn, Munson, Counsell are the other four guys on the bench.
  11. I'm not a big fan of either Gross or Gwynn, however, I think OBP should be a more important stat when comparing who should be getting the bulk of the AB's while Cameron is out. I think we all agree Gwynn is a better defender than Gross, even if Gwynn is not a stud defender like some say. Who is going to get on base more between Gross and Gwynn? Given the amount of power this team has (I believe it has 7 20+ HR hitters in the lineup, that would leave 6 even when Cameron is not playing), I think the guy that gets on base more would maybe be more advantageous offensively. The question is, who is that guy? Career wise, Gross is at .343 and Gwynn is at .307, although Gwynn's AB sample is smaller. How close will these two be this year with regards to OBP? I believe if they are close or equal, Gwynn might bring more because of the upgraded D and the power in the lineup. Thankfully we only have to deal with this debate for 25 games.
  12. Weeks did indeed have the highest batting average in college history, finish his career at .473. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=1653022 As a college sophomore at Southern University in 2002, Rickie Weeks hit .495 with 20 homers, winning the NCAA Division I batting title, and putting him into contention as a first-round pick for the '03 draft. He followed that up by hitting .479 with 16 homers in 2003, winning his second straight batting title and finishing his college career with the highest batting average in NCAA history (.473). (pared back nested quote --1992)
  13. Mentioning LaPorta gets me excited. Braun/Hart/LaPorta OF. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. No Lilly or Hill in the first series? I guess the one team we do have an advantage against due to our right hand heavy lineup is the Cubs, given that 2 of their top 3 guys are lefties. If the Brewers can take that first game against Z, should be able to hopefully win the series.
  15. For a team, nothing. For a pitcher, plenty. But that has been plenty covered in the Major League forum and no need to hijack the thread.
  16. Record is the most overrated pitching stat there is. Vargas is the 8th best starter of our 8 options. Parra on talent alone would be in the rotation if he didn't have options and they were ready to give him 200 innings. I'm going to be very upset if Vargas is in the rotation over either Cappy or Villanueva, and even Bush.
  17. Where is Sheets? And I think Vargas and Parra both have a better shot than Cappy being in the rotation to start the season. Cappy needs to use his option to go down to AAA or extended spring training and work on some things Typo. I like Parra but given he has options he will be in AAA. Vargas is garbage.
  18. I see zero chance Bush is in the rotation once Gallardo is back. Sheets/Gallardo/Suppan/Villanueva/Capuano.
  19. I'm going to be absolutely livid if Vargas is on the 25 man roster come opening day. We have seven starting pitchers that are better, thus making this a no-brainer decision. I think what eventually happens is what I predicted in the starting rotation thread. Rotation when healthy will be Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan, Villanueva, Capuano, Bush goes to long relief, Parra goes to AAA, and Vargas is traded for whatever.
  20. No timely hitting and bad pitching. Sounds like last year.
  21. Yeah, I don't mind having Cameron 2, he K's a lot but his OBP is still comparable to Hardy's and he has more speed. I'd still like to see Braun in front of Fielder though, I think he will produce better there and Fielder will produce no matter where he is in the lineup.
  22. I don't know if people want to move this to the lineup thread or not, but I'm just wondering why it appears Yost is strongly considering batting Prince third and Braun fourth, as opposed to the Braun third, Prince fourth combination that worked so well last year? I just think Prince doesn't need the protection, and Braun, more of a free swinger and not apt to take a walk would see more fastballs batting third over batting fourth. I know they are trying to put Braun in more running situations, but that will have minimal advantage, IMO. I am hoping we end up seeing Braun/Fielder and not Fielder/Braun when the regular season starts.
  23. He doesn't have any options left?
  24. I will say Capuano beats out Bush for the final rotation spot, and that Vargas in whatever capacity is not on the 25 man roster. Rotation: 1. Sheets 2. Gallardo 3. Suppan 4. Villanueva 5. Capuano Bullpen: Bush Mota Torres Riske Shouse Turnbow Gagne AAA: McClung Parra
  25. I don't think Dillon had any HR last year.
