  1. Do you give him full credit, then, for Gallardo (and his contract extension) & Braddock? How about Odorizzi, Jeffress, Arnett, Peralta, Rivas, Rogers, Scarpetta, & Heckathorn? Each of those guys throws hard (or in Odorizzi's case, projects to add enough velocity to qualify) & has pretty good upside. Melvin may have not made a trade to bring in a high end power arm, but like monty57 notes, perhaps the Brewers saw something in McGowan's delivery they didn't like. He did try to nab Clay Buchholz last year when Buchholz was squeezed out of the Red Sox rotation, and that's just the one inquiry we've heard about. I really don't think it's wise or fair to assume Buchholz is the only high-end power guy Melvin has inquired about. As has been noted by others, those types of pitchers are really, really hard to get, & tend not to get traded. Yes Melvin gets credit for Gallardo and potentially Braddock if he proves successful as well as the other pitchers that were drafted during his time as GM. Im sorry but Gallardo and Parra are the only current power arms that Melvin has drafted that have made the majors so far and Parra is still a major question mark. Maybe some of the current minor leaguers will turn out well and Melvin will get credit at that point in time but that does not excuse his long track record of producing very few good power arms.
  2. The bottom line is you dont win big with a rotation full of Doug Davis and Dave Bush type pitchers. These are the types of pitchers that may allow you to hang around the .500 mark if the offense is good but there is just no upside with these guys. The problem is that Melvin has always relied on these types of pitchers going back to his time in Texas. How many years do we need to see from Melvin teams to come to the conclusion that he just doesnt know pitching. This is precisely the reason why this team is stuck in neutral.
  3. The criticism is not acquiring high end pitching. Melvin didnt draft Sheets so he doesnt get much credit for signing him. Melvin has chosen to take the easy way out in regards to pitching, the low ceiling guys with no upside. As for McGowan I wouldnt be criticizing Melvin if he had traded for McGowan because that would have shown that he tried to trade for top end talent. I never blame Melvin for injuries I instead chose to focus on his lack of aggressiveness in acquiring high end power arms.
  4. Didnt we just trade Hardy for a high risk player in Gomez?
  5. You are complanaing about Melvin because he never traded for a "can't miss" young pitcher? While I'm on board with wanting Melvin to try and aquire more high upside pitchers, the reason those kind of guys are available is because they have warts. If they are pre arby can't miss guys, they aren't available. I shouldnt have used the term cant miss pitcher. What I meant to say was when has Melvin ever acquired a young power arm with potential for the rotation other than JDLR? Even a guy like Morrow who is still struggling with Toronto would have been a guy worth taking a chance on. It cant always be Davis and Wolf and others that have no upside whatsoever. Give me a guy like Morrow and if he fails we can at least say Melvin took the chance on a guy with a power arm. I would rather fail on a guy with potential than paying millions for the likes of Davis.
  6. TLB, is it too much too ask for Melvin to have acquired any high upside young pitching via trade as GM? The only power SP arm that he has acquired was DLR and he was not exactly a cant miss guy. There have been several high upside starting pitchers traded such as Matt Garza and Edwin Jackson. Melvin might have been able to acquire Garza for Hardy/Hart plus minor league filler. Im sure it would have hurt at the time to trade Hardy or Hart but thats the type of risk Melvin never seems to take. He is always taking the easy way out by signing the Davis' and Loopers of the world while smart organizations like Tampa acquire guys like Garza. Melvin has this love affair with soft tossers that goes back to his days in Texas and its killed us. I realize its not easy to acquire young power arms but it does happen, unfortunately Melvin is too busy chasing the Doug Davis' of the world in free agency. To get that power arm Melvin would have to sacrifice a bat at peak value instead of waiting until its too late in the case of Hardy and Hart.
  7. I cant stop laughing about this. Dayton Moore is flat out incredibly bad.
  8. I hope he turns that offer down. With his body type I dont really want to commit that kind of money to Prince. With Boras as his agent and following the Howard deal I would think its almost certain that Prince wouldnt take it unless he went on his own and defied his agent.
  9. We need to put Parra in the rotation now to see if we can salvage him. The guy has the best stuff on the roster and if we trade him now we will get garbage in return. Might as well see what he has and put him in the rotation for the rest of the season instead of wasting him in the bullpen.
  10. I believe JJ played poorly because he knew his time was running out in Milwaukee and he couldnt just relax and play. Its not easy to keep hearing about the guy that is about to replace you and concentrate on the job at hand.
  11. The guy looks done to me. Its amazing that he lasted this long with a slowball masquerading as his fastball. With this GM and this manager it will probably be another two months before he loses his closer job.
  12. I dont really see our minor league system as being anything other than average at this point. I dont think we have any sure fire star players in our system. We have decent depth and plenty of guys who may well turn out excellent but I dont see any sure things at all. If LuCroy is really our number one prospect at the moment we arent all that strong. When was the last time this team has drafted a star player beyond the first round or two? I dont follow the minor leagues as closely as many on here but I dont think the system is all that good. I hope I am wrong and very well might be but I dont think our system is all that good.
  13. Do you honestly trust Melvin to spend that money wisely. All he has done the last few years is waste millions on over the hill pitchers both for the rotation and the bullpen.
  14. We cant expect the bullpen to hold up when they are pitching 3-5 innings every game.
  15. I have definitely become apethetic towards this team. I realize we arent very good and Ive come to terms with it. We are absolutely fundamentally inept and thats been true for a long time.
  16. Nice job Casey but if not for Gerut's stupidity we would be ahead.
  17. Youve got to be kidding me. Why is Gerut trying to steal third.
