  1. The Brewers simply cannot afford to sign Prince for what he will be demanding, assuming the market stays where it is in that the top two or three free agents get insane deals and the rest get the scraps. Prince will be a top two or three free agent in 2012 assuming he stays healthy. The Brewers cannot retain these types of players and expect to be both competitive and viable. I just hope Doug gets to fleece whoever wants him either next offseason or midway through 2012. The Red Sox would be my team of choice to fleece, and they just might be ripe for the taking at that time.
  2. What do you people expect him to do? Go and sign a tender sheet for 750k and call it a day? I may have missed it, but I didn't see anyone here insinuating Hart should do this. Hart should do whatever he wants, and if that means putting the entire matter into the hands of a greasy agent that's fine. He just shouldn't be surprised when a portion of the fan base holds it against him. Judging by his comments at On Deck, it appears he is fine with the fan backlash that is occurring. The bottom line is he needs to perform this year to get paid again, otherwise he is just another Gabe Gross making $750k and calling it a day. That can only mean good things for the Brewers (unless he feels he is just another Gabe Gross, that this is his last year to get a big payday, and is milking the system thinking he may just fade into MLB mediocrity).
  3. I think this is the year Prince Fielder finally breaks out. But seriously, if Weeks can stay off the DL he will have a great year. He is ready. Jeff Suppan retires after this year. He is set for life thanks to Melvin and Attanasio, and its clear he is no longer effective at the big league level.
  4. If a guy is a good player at 35, you should not expect him to be useless at 36. This is true, but in certain cases (like Damon), if a player makes $12MM per year ages 31-35, he should not necessarily expect to make that 36-40. Part of these guys being out of work seems to be because they are unwilling to take drastic reductions in salary, like its not even worth their time to play for a measly $800k.
  5. I don't think he makes it to Milwaukee. Something is going to give in ST.
  6. Can I still hate him? Yes, but now only if he sucks.
  7. I'll take Sheets' 2008 season ahead of Suppan's entire body of work with the team. Heck, I would take Sheets' 2009 season ahead of Suppan's entire body of work.
  8. Why spend a hundred bucks on an event when your top priority is to beat the traffic home? Because if they don't even know what a no hitter is, they should be on their way out anyway.
  9. I think Melvin submitted a figure that will win in arbitration. He could have offered under $4MM and it would have been a fair offer for Corey Hart. I am actually hoping this goes to a hearing.
  10. For some reason, this doesn't seem to be happening with other players on our team. Yep, just one player actually. Two years in a row.
  11. Something on that lineup doesn't seem right, and I am not talking about the Mets being repeated four times.
  12. Still, he just doesn't seem like a very smart guy. Whatever gave you that impression?
  13. No they play in market where they gamble $10m on an oft injured closer. Or $10m on overated mediocrity. Hopefully Melvin has learned his lesson, albeit the hard way.
  14. I just think Beane is trying to Flip That Sheets. They don't stand a chance in that division.
  15. Hart could easily become this year's whipping boy if he doesn't come out and at least perform respectably.
  16. Having an injury doesn't necessarily mean someone "disappears," as if he just didn't want to be there or simply wasn't "clutch." Allow me to clarify... when I say "disappear" I mean "to pass from view" or "pass out of notice." I didn't think people would infer that disappear means to not be clutch or doesn't want to be there. I used the word for its literal meaning, not its inferred or implied contexts. I was a fan, but now he is playing for another team. My allegiance is with the Brewers, not Ben Sheets. And FWIW, I would definitely take Davis and Hawkins in 2010 over Ben Sheets. If I was a Yankee fan and could take a flier on someone like Sheets, rather than have to actually count on him, then I would rather have Sheets in 2010.
  17. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200809060.shtml Anyway (it's an old argument that makes no sense to rehash now) http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200809270.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200707050.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200707140.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200709140.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200709180.shtml I'm confused, does it make sense to rehash or not? I could at least double that total. Like I said, love/hate. Love when he's pitching, hate when he's not (the opposite of my affection for Suppan... hate/love). #15 will be worn by Ryan Sweeny for a couple years after Sheets is gone in Oakland.
  18. I didn't mean to imply that it was his fault, regardless of whether part of it was or not. It just happened, and that affects people's perception and opinion (especially when he is making $9MM to be there and pitch). Injuries are unfortunate, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they actually happen.
  19. The negativity was because he was paid as, and the organization held him up as, an ace. He didn't quite live up to billing, and disappeared when the club needed him most. Sure he is a great pitcher when he is on, but its not hard to understand the love/hate relationship he had with some fans.
  20. For now anyway, but I might start to fret come June/July.
  21. Crafty Beane, looking to buy some prospects through Ben Sheets. Its a gamble, but it could work.
  22. I perceive it to be broken, but I am just a lowly fan.
  23. Defense be darned, he could still fill in at all three spots and get really meaningful playing time. Not to mention he could go back to being Captain Caveman again without the silly Yankee appearance rules.
  24. I get the traditionalists are adverse to change, but there is nothing to be liked, or traditional, about a six team and a four team division in a major league sport where there are an even number of teams. I would rather see balanced divisions with interleague year round. Its not that difficult to conceive, and people would get over it in a hurry.
  25. Every other pro sports league has interleague games throughout the entire season. I don't see why baseball couldn't make it work. If the Brewers need to beat the Rangers in September to make the playoffs, it would be just as entertaining as if they had to beat the Reds or the Pirates.
