Ned Yost Yay or Nay thread: Hardball Times rips Yost (part 2)
sheethead replied to Ennder's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Good call. One thing to keep in mind however, if Yost would have started off slow this year, and his mistakes were still as glaring as they are now, it sure would have been easier to fire him in May/June than it is today. -

I agree, mostly. Before this year I thought it would be unheard of to fire a manager/coach that wins a division in pro sports. Then Marty got fired in SD. That got me wondering how an organization let their GM throw a good guy and good coach under the bus. I think it was because of expectations. Go 14-2 in the NFL and you are pretty much expected to win the Super Bowl. Ned is not in the same boat simply because he has never won anything. And this year the Central is just as bad as last year. If Ned can barely get the 86 or 87 wins needed to win the division, but does win the division by a game or so, I think he should still be fired if they fizzle in the division series. At the end of the day the division should not have even come that close to begin with. He has clearly cost the team 3 or more wins, and mismanages his bullpen constantly (yes, even in 14-0 laughers). Why is it so hard to find a good manager? The job is not that hard. Get along with the guys, makes the in-game substitiution, and manage the bullpen. Its not that hard!! -

As far as Aquino goes, you should be happy that Yost came out and said that if he had it to do over again, he would've summoned Cordero. At least you should feel good that he took something away from that game that will lead him to your camp. And I agree that Cordero was the best short-term option in that game. I also feel no happiness knowing Yost admitted this. He should have known the right move when we all did, not a day later. Bad manager. He gambled and lost. In hindsight, he probably got too cute, and it cost him. 'Cause he's a gamblin' man... and you know what's next - he crapped out [another bad decision]. 9/5 - Good game tonight overall for Ned. He used the bench appropriately. Distributed some playing time to the AAAers. Two things: 1) myself and all three friends I attended with agreed that Yo should not have been pitching past the 5th. Save the kid for hopefully an extra start down the road. 2) Ray Ray has been in town less than 24 hours and Ned is already abusing him. Where was Capuano, Aquino, Spurling, or McClung? They must be getting their rest for that situational lefty appearance on Friday. Yeah, that's what we concluded. Edit: Nay. -
Ned Yost Yay or Nay thread: Hardball Times rips Yost (part 2)

I am having fun. And I am fun to watch a game with. I see the game from all angles and am ususally on the side with the majority of knowledgeable sports fans when it comes to issues like this. I may be wrong, I may be right, but I will always acknowlege a good argument even if I don't agree with it. There just are not many good arguments for Ned being a good MLB manager left. Take it and leave if you must, but if I were defending Ned I would be plenty frustrated also right about now. Lest I remind you, everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially on the internet. -

I have not come upon said evidence, so I wouldn't know. I am not taking this personal, just interpreting the tone. To mention another bad manager such as Davy Lopes (whom may I mention will never manage in the bigs again) is not really providing an example of an irrational move. Neither is portraying your own belief that bunting runners over before the 8th is wrong. In addition, to say Ned Yost added 10 or 11 wins to the same team from the prior year is sort of saying the manager does have an impact on wins and losses, right? By the way, is that late game bunting scenario you mentioned kind of like the one in last night's game? -

dude i've probably played and forgot more baseball than you ever will, so i wouldn't go there. I'll admit, I'm baffled by this. i just don't let my dislike for a player or manager cloud my judgement. I'll admit, I'm baffled by this also. I have reitterated on numerous occasions that I like Ned Yost. Its just a shame he isn't a good MLB manager. putting guys on second and third with one out is never a bad idea Unless of course you have a lefty coming up that even I knew was going to be walked to get to DP Estrada. The lineup was in my head from the time it was posted. Don't assume you are the only one to have played baseball. You say you've "played and forgot[ten] more baseball." Its starting to sound more like the later. whose to say hart and jenkins would have done anything. Hard to tell, but the odds are better of them doing something than Estrada. use some sense or have a decent argument to back up the nonsense. Please. Practice what you preach. Your whole post can be discredited in a heartbeat. -

I don't hate Yost, and I have never said that. Hate is best reserved for objects rather than people in my book. What I don't like is how he manages the game. Putting a bat in Estrada's hands with the bases loaded vs. Hart and Jenkins with 2 on and nobody out is a BAD MOVE. If you can't see that, then I know why you back Yost. -

It was definitely a tactical error. Yost should have known they would walk Jenkins and pitch to Johnny DP Estrada. Hart hasn't even hit into a DP this year. The bunt was a bad idea in that situation. -
What is with all the criticism of the fans?
sheethead replied to bklynbrewcrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I do agree with you here. I've long thought the average Milwaukee sports fan is an idiot. Just listen to them after a Packer loss. I've been a Yost supporter all year, because as I said, we as fans don't know what's going on in the dugout or the bullpen at the time of the decision. But I'm having a real hard time defending him after yesterday and after the Chicago game where Hart got called out on strikes and Mench was batting to end the game. One thing you might want to keep in mind is the average Milwaukee sports fan isn't likely to be found posting on this site. I can tell you seriously, I am not an average sports fan and do think rationally about the game. This is why its hard for me to sit in the Terrace level (other than it being a crappy seat). Too many of your average Milwaukee sports fans sitting up there. -

I'm pretty sure they booed well before it was known that Aquino was the one coming in. That is not the impression i got while watching on FSN. The boos became much more prominant after Aquino walked onto the field from the bullpen. -
What is with all the criticism of the fans?
sheethead replied to bklynbrewcrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
There is a very good reason fans have been complaining about Yost for months now. Personally, I have been complaining since the 2nd Aquino loss back in April. Now, over 3 months later, Ned makes the same mistake. His supporters have no ground to stand on, so stop calling the see-clearers whiners and criers. At least 3 games in the past week and a half have been compromised by Ned Yost's decision making. The fans have every right to call him out on these games. The fans don't deserve the criticism, especially not the ones that booed Yost's move to Aquino yesterday. Those booing fans should be called in for job interviews IMO. -
That seems to be a lot to ask of our manager.
-
"Attanasio said he felt Yost had been consistent all year long in terms of his managerial moves and said it was a mistake to evaluate a manager on a point-by-point, pitch-by-pitch, game-by-game basis." Really? If anything has been consistant it has been the bad decisions. I may have started beating the horse now that its dead, but I really can't stand looking at Ned in the dugout anymore. His facial expressions make me so angry. I liked him starting out the year, but he has handled success as poorly as I could have imagined. It went to his head early, and now he needs to make good decsions to win some critical games and he can't. Its just a sea of excuses. Time for the media to step up and start firing the tough questions during the post game. They are almost assured he will be gone next year anyway, so start the rift.

For all those arguing that Yost made the best available decision in bringing in Aquino and cite splits as the reason why, then why was it okay for Yost to let Mench bat on 8/30 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth when he had Jenkins and Gross on the bench available? Ah yes, cause that game was managed based on the "flow of the game" while the game yesterday was managed based on splits. There is no consistancy with his managing style, period. Please stop defending Ned Yost, he does not deserve it anymore. -
You're right, 3 out of 4 is terrible. Ned will be here next year too, so I guess see ya later. Yeah, and leading the league in bonehead decisions by trying to use unconventional stats is? That would be like Lou Pinella say " We decided to pitch around the guy because we found out he's 13 - 78 after day games vs lefties when he's shaved even though in his career he's 13 for 20 against the guy. BTW, did Ned Lost tell anyone why he sat Hall who was a career .361 hitter against Oswalt? Chances are, if you (implying anybody) followed any other baseball team as much as the Brewers you would hate half of that manager's decisions too. Look at Philly just this week... Sweep the Mets, get rocked by Florida. It happens with every team, all season long and in the end we're just fans and this is simply a baseball game. I do follow plenty of MLB teams, and let me tell you, Philly is not making the playoffs (again), and part of that is because they have a horrible manager. I have no doubt Charlie Manuel will be fired at the end of the year along with Ned Yost. The reason is that neither one is a good manager. There are plenty of good managers in the league (Torre, Melvin, LaRussa, Cox, Francona, Scioscia, Gardenhire, Leyland, etc). Its funny you pointed out one of the other crappers. If either Yost or Manuel got into the post season they would need a tremendous amount of luck in order to succeed. Seeing how Ned doesn't really have that much good luck on his side, I believe he would just be downright embarrassed in the post-season. And just to clarify my original post, I said Labor Day, not Labor Day Weekend. 3 out of 4 is fine, unless of course it SHOULD have been 4 out of 4. If you are pulling for Yost to be back next year... I would start praying he makes the playoffs. He needs lots of your prayers, because there are plenty of people that stopped praying for the dude. His arrogant looks and comments he makes after painful losses subsequent to another one of his boneheaded in-game decisions have prompted me to start praying for his removal.
-
Yost ruined Labor Day in Milwaukee. I am done following this team until he is gone. Go D'backs!

I just might find myself compelled to watch something else instead of the Brewers. Unlike Toast I have choices... maybe i'll watch a war movie with some good battles.

But they were so close, its sad what has transpired. I hate for people to lose their jobs, but its going to happen. As far as the trades: - Mench was not the key acquisition in the Carlos Lee trade, but a nice throw in with Cordero - advantage Doug Melvin - Cappy was part of the 5 player deal that involved Sexon, and until a year ago was productive. Not sure what happened after the '06 All Star game, but it wasn't good - still advantage Doug Melvin - Soup most people thought was at the least a decent signing. Not awesome, but pretty solid. - Not sure if this was all Doug Melvin, but a good signing (better than Schmidt would have been) - Counsell - not good Doug Melvin, but kind of necessary insurance - Linebrink was not a bad deal at the time IMO. Hindsight shows otherwise, but I liked the trade at the time - Vargas and Estrada for Davis was a good trade I think - The Overbay trade was also decent - I didn't have to watch David Bell for that long - I think Melvin was handcuffed by division rivals this year with the waiver wire as the Cubs and Cards picked up pieces the Brewers couldn't due to win/loss records. I don't think Melvin has made an overtly bad trade/signing as GM of the Brewers. I will have no problem defending Doug Melvin into next year, assuming he does something about the manager position.
-
I agree with you for the most part. The only problem I have with placing onus on Melvin is that he has done his job well in those 5 years. I say this honestly because I look at the numerous trades and key hires he has made that did indeed improve the club. The talent level has increased each year, while the results have not. The only thing I would say Melvin has done poorly is not realizing sooner that Yost is not cut out for MLB managing. Its hard to fault him there, because Yost has been able to hide behind a .500 season and injuries the last two years. But this year his flaws are glowing fluorescent yellow and orange. The decision should be an easy one for him. Now its only a matter of timing. I may have went too high on the food chain when I mentioned CEO. I may have been better served saying Vice President of Operation/Finance. Someone who can't explain their spending or efficiency variance may get the axe before the higher ups on the food chain get theirs.

So what's all the love for Kremblas?
sheethead replied to Thurston Fluff's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
He has consistently won while leading a team. This would qualify him as a good candidate. Granted he has had good players, but so does Yost. I think people are receptive to Kremblas because he seems to be a winner, not a whiner. Edit: As far as the training under Bobby Cox goes, that definitely is great experience. But if you weren't cut out for the job in the first place, it doesn't really matter who you trained under. I would question how much Ned actually learned all those years. He sure didn't seem to learn how to win. -
This is something I don't agree with. I'm not saying this is or isn't the case with Yost, but if you have an above-average manager with below-average talent, I want the above-average manager, because the alternative could very well worse, regardless is they're "responsible" for it from the traditional, managerial point of view. I've got no problem with Attanasio or Melvin making the team better by making personnel changes, but just firing the guy because it's the "thing you're supposed to do" isn't a theory I would personally subscribe to. I am not sure I understand your response, but with all do respect Brian, in the context I was trying to convey it is the right thing to do. He hasn't panned out, and its time to take the company in a different direction (other than down). In any results driven business, management is given to opportunity to produce results. If there are no results, especially after 5 years, then its time to make a switch. Ned shouldn't have to get caught soliciting sex in a bathroom in order to lose his job, all he has to do to lose his job is what he has done all season - and that is prove he isn't a very good manager. This team is/was plenty talented to take this division this year. All they needed was a little mojo from management. What they got instead was an em-battled manager with no huevos.

What is the owner doing right about now?
sheethead replied to bklynbrewcrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Mark A. is jamming daggers in his Ned Yost voodoo doll. Wait that's what i'm doing, sorry. -
Its not that Ned is single-handily losing the games, its the fact that his in game decisions are. Some of those decisions are justified by stats and such, but the bottom line is that none of his decisions are working out. It may not be completely his fault, but that is the way the cookie crumbles in his profession. Same with CEOs, Presidents, GMs and the such. They may not be overtly incompetent, but when the crap is drying on the fan and they can't find a way to clean it up you have to get someone who will. I feel like pointing to Steve Bartman. All that dude did was catch a foul ball that may have otherwise landed on his head. Now he can't even live in Chicago anymore. This year, Ned Yost is the Brewer's Steve Bartman, the only difference is that Ned is getting paid for it.
