  1. If his contract is below market value then doesn't it make more sense to keep him than trade him to save money? I think a small market teams have to find value and Lohse is a value for his production. I doubt that Attanasio views next year in the same way many Brewers fans do. My guess is he is of the mind frame that with some better health and roster tweaks, the team can be competitive next year, thus he really wasn't interested in trying to trade Lohse at the deadline and likely won't try to trade him in the offseason. Personally I think the fans are overreacting more so than management being unrealistic about our chances next season.
  2. Torre wasn't a bad catcher at all, but his bat needed to be in the lineup everyday. He became an MVP at 3rd Base. Lucroy is a nice pitch framer but he's at best average defensively and he's not an ironman that you can start 150 games behind the plate without it being detrimental to his offense. I think his catching abilities are far more advanced now than they were a couple season's ago. He's pretty good at throwing out runners and does a decent job of blocking balls in the dirt as far as I can tell. Not great but at least average. I don't know how well he calls a game but then again neither do you so I'm not sure what you are basing your assessment of his sub par defense on. The desire to see Lucroy (small c) play less catcher is to cut down on wear and tear. If we are concerned about him in the mid 30's this would make sense. He's probably going to be before he breaks down so does that really matter?
  3. He's the best pitcher on our staff now. What if he pulls a Wolf next year and blows up? Then we have an albatross contract on our hands and the deal involving a draft pick looks really good. The chances Lohse is going to continue to be our best pitcher is remote. We're not competing, there's no need for him, why not trade him when you could actually get value? What if he doesn't and we got rid of him for a draft pick? What if he does even better next season and has a higher trade value than now? Even if he does Wolf it Wolf gave us 2 good seasons and we ate one season's worth of contract. That is hardly a franchise crippling event. Everything is a gamble. YOu have to calculate what is too much of one and move on from there. What we do know is the odds of Lohse giving us at least overall average quality production for the next two to three seasons is far greater that the odds a tradable pick ever makes it to the major leagues.
  4. Both teams got draft picks for their respective starters. I would've have taken that for Lohse, probably not for Gallardo but definitely for Lohse. The odds of a draft pick that low in the draft isn't anything close to a good deal for the best pitcher on our staff. The odds are against drafting a player who even gets to the majors let alone provide a sub 4 ERA starting pitcher. I may be in the minority here but I think stock piling draft picks in baseball is over rated. It's just too easy to trade spare parts for minor league players to boost the system. No need to trade viable starter just to get another amateur in the system. Now if we could trade for a top five or ten pick it might be a different story. But the picks that can be traded are not anywhere near that level.
  5. I could see something small happening in August but I'm happy with getting something for K-Rod. It wouldn't surprise me if he landed back here next season.
  6. I did cheer for him today, but someone had their dog dressed as a beer vendor and won in a landslide. Such a cheat.
  7. I'm not sure how much you can learn from a handful of AB's. How about his .292/.330/.385/.715 line in 2012 in Huntsville or his .293/.337/.387/.724 line in Nashville? Both are pretty terrible. What is the average line for a 2nd baseman?
  8. I think the best therapy to help cope with the Braun thing is to make a 15' tall robot out of balloons.
  9. I think he goes in the category of pay your penalty, say all the right things and we will accept you back as a player long as you help us. Right or wrong he is one of ours for the foreseeable future. He did give us a team friendly discount twice. We as a team and fans accepted. Did he do it because he knew eventually he would get caught or because he wanted to get us a championship? I don't know. Lets just see how he plays clean and move on from there. As far as trading him I don't think it is even a remote possibility. He has a no trade clause IIRC and nobody is going to give up enough to make trading him realistic.
  10. If it helps, it's only really tainted if you believe that no players on either the teams the Brewers beat out for the playoff berth or the Arizona Diamondbacks were using as well. It doesn't really help. I've always been the type who like following the underdog persevering when the odds are stacked against them. In a way it was part of why I am so hardcore a Brewer fan. I enjoy the few moments of success doing it the right way more than I could winning all the time by being the big guy or taking shortcuts. This is the antithesis of that. But thanks for trying.
  11. Have you used cocaine? Have you ever played 162 games of baseball in a single season? It seems to be uppers could significantly help you. Not really. IT doesn't give you more energy all the time without a price. I think if you ask anyone who used coke the crash is twice as low as the high is. It may help you on Tuesday but Wednesday sucks twice as bad. They really are two different things. If they weren't it would be hard to explain why coke wasn't as rampant as steroids were. That isn't to excuse Molitor. I have said this before but he wasn't as high (no pun intended) on my list as many other players. A major part of that was his drug use and what I always felt was a me first personality.
  12. Now this team has an elite Star, got to the playoffs twice w him as the centerpiece and now I have to listen to opposing fans dismiss this team and him as cheaters!??? That is the saddest part isn't it? It would have been nice to enjoy the few good times without finding out it was tainted. He essentially took back everything he ever gave us.
  13. From the beginning of testing I was for baseball going beyond testing and setting up an investigative unit to get cheating out of the game. As this investigation went along I was a little concerned about how they went about it. I guess this clears up my concerns. Thank you MLB for taking it seriously. If only the NFL would take it this seriously. As far as Braun goes he made a serious mistake then compounded it by lying. I hope he learns from this and become who he should have been all along. If that is not a super star but merely a guy I would be much happier with him then than I am today.
  14. That assumes we won't be competitive for the next three years. Even if we are I think having a good veteran pitcher to help the young pitchers along has a decent amount of value in and of itself.
  15. Which goes to show that with a pitching staff that's flyball/strikeout dominant, infield defense isn't that critical. With a staff of groundball pitchers, it takes on added importance. As bad as Hellweg's first big league taste was, the defense was horrendous behind him. Considering we had Hart and Braun at the corners and Gomez only playing against lefties I am not so sure that outfield defense was a great fit for the pitching. My point was twofold. First I think we are overestimating how bad our infield defense is. Ramirez was pretty good until his knee hurt so I think he will be better next season. Segura is respectable out there despite an awful game here or there. He certainly has the range. Weeks is average and not much is going to change if we move on to Scooter. First is were we will see a major change for the better just by having everyone back. In other words we can do nothing but wait for injuries to go away and be better. Second I am not sold that defense is all that critical. It certainly helps but I'll take a poor defender who can hit over a gold glove light hitter any day.
  16. I think the last couple seasons has been more an issue of health than incompetence. The last real bad infield defense was when we had McGehee, Fielder, Weeks and Yuni playing.
  17. Actually I thought I was on that thread. Silly me.
  18. We could have traded Lawrie for a young pitcher I seriously doubt that. There are way more teams looking for young, cheap high, ceiling pitching than young, cheap, high ceiling middle infielders. Young pitching is typically more valued than young hitting so it seems very unlikely we would get equal value to Marcum in a deal. we could have traded Hart, Weeks, Fielder, etc rather than extending them or letting them walk via free agency. IIRC they tried to trade Fielder but nobody wanted to give up anything close to equal value for him. I suppose we could have traded him sooner but I fail to see how continually trading proven good players, under our control for multiple season's, for young, unproven talent really ever gets us to where we want to be sooner. I mean as soon as those guys get good, following your idea of what should be done, we trade them for some supposed perfect future scenario. A scenario that is less likely to occur the more times you trade a known commodity for an unknown quantity. The Brewers chose instead to use them to actually win the division and take a shot at the WS.
  19. He was off to a slow start last season as well. Wasn't Maldanado his catcher then? I think it's more likely that it just takes him time to get in going than his catcher somehow getting him to throw more strikes. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets off to a slow start again next season. Hopefully, as he gets more experience, he regains his form more quickly.
  20. I think he has helped get him Focused and stay in rhythm on the mound. If that is the case then was he at fault for not getting him to do that earlier?
  21. I don't know how much Maldanado has to do with the change considering he's been his catcher all along.
  22. Between this and the Laffey signing it looks like they are preparing for the aftermath of trading some relievers. Doesn't hurt to have a couple backup plans in place when the time comes.
  23. If the season is lost why not keep playing them so they learn how to handle the workload? Then if we are in it next season and we need to them in the lineup everyday they will know how to deal with it.
