  1. My paypal says it went to brewerfan.com is that the right place? Just wanted to make sure I got it right.
  2. I don't know if it's productive outs as much as most of the players have the same weakness. The low batting averages and OBP make them pretty one dimensional on offense.
  3. His weight is only one factor and has an unknown negative contribution to his ofensive and defensive performance. I think it points more to not doing everything possible to make sure he playing at his best than the specific issue of his weight. That is the part I am disappointed in. Coming out of high school he had a reputation of being overweight and he worked very hard to control his weight. If he is not doing the same now then I think it is a legitimate complaint. My personal opinion is things might have come a bit too easy for him early on and he got a bit lackadaisical in his preparations for the season. It's also why I think it's fair to criticize him now. I would have a lot more sympathy for him if I felt he did everything he could to make sure this sort of prolonged slump didn't happen.
  4. As a Brewer fan, I feel as though I've been bred to expect failure and fantasize about worst case scenarios. I never think this way late in games, or late in seasons about the Packers. I don't want to make this a Packers thread but they haven't been a great playoff team since the mid 90's. I'm not worried. The Mets and Phillies are capable but they have their flaws as well. The Cubs have a brutal September schedule. In July the Cubs were talking about how they need to pull away form the pack in August because of a tough September schedule. The Brewers foiled that plan by winning as many games as the Cubs did. I see that team choking easier than I do the Brewers. I don't believe the division is out of reach let alone falling out of the playoffs all together.
  5. This team will not advance in the playoffs, if God-willing they hold on. But I'm not gonna go off on the mental toughness or the managing, or any of that. The main reason I see them losing is the bullpen. I just can't see the bullpen other than Torres being able to buckle down and hold a lead. As it stands they would face the Mets first round in the playoffs and they have a worse pen than we do. Yes the Mets have beat us twice in a row but we did the same to them earlier as well. Since the fifth starter is also effectively a bullpen guy throughout I don't think the pen is as big an issue in the playoffs. The first round the fourth and fifth guys are in it. This team is fine. We are as close to the division lead as the closest wild card challenger is to us. The Cubs have the harder September schedule and are losers of 4 in a row. The Brewers could still end up with the best record in the league easier than they could end up out of the playoffs all together.
  6. We used to do it because I like to listen to music or the radio and my wife can't sleep with it on. It is weird but we both slept better. Then I found a pillow speaker thingy at radio shack and moved back in. A couple weeks of getting used to being belted int he head from a wife who cannot sleep in one place later all is good.
  7. someone mentioned any hole in the wall mexican place and that reminded me of my favorite place for a burrito. Taco Burrito Mexico in Green bay on E Mason st. Awesome stuff. Been to Laras Tortilla flats in Oshkosh but not real fond of that one. Sammy's pizza is pretty good but my favorite pizza in Appleton is Pizza King's Chicago pizza. They have the best sauce in town IMO and they use large pieces of meat and veggies instead of small ones so you can taste it when you bite into them.
  8. It is interesting to read how Yost-haters fit there Yost hating philosophy with the possibilty of him winning manager of the year. I have been a Nedophile for years but in defense to those who hate Yost I don't think hating him and thinking he's a good manager are mutually exclusive. I hate LaRussa I think he's an arrogant jerk who picks fights with every team he faces for perceived slights always making sure he gets the first shot in so his players don't have to worry about getting payback without losing their pitcher in the process. That doesn't mean I can't admit he is a good manager. I just don't want him managing the team I root for. I think most of the Yost haters are getting to or are already at that point now. It's hard to argue he's useless with the second best record in the league. That doesn't mean they have to like him though.
  9. Thanks guys. I feel less stupid now even though I don't remember it. I think the fact that I don't think managerial moves in the game is all that important is probably why those type of things don't get stuck in my head. It is dumb in my mind but not significant. Other than I can bash LaRussa for it. That is always something worth remembering.
  10. Parra then tripled to LC. Obviously Ned knew what he was doing while LaRussa is just plain stupid.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif I have to ask. Do you guys just remember that stuff, did that play stick in your head for some reason or did you look it up? I have a hard time remembering specific plays two days later, unless it was unusual for some reason, let alone a single moment a month ago.
  11. The Brewers haven't been in any brawls, It's the Cards that are in a brawl or some sort of bean war every other week. Every move, every close pitch, every perceived slight has Tony and the boys throwing high and tight or in the back. I just don't see that as the right way to play the game.
  12. Thanks RU. I guess those who thought if we missed the playoff by that one game he lost can now rest easy since the team chasing us evened it out. Just goes to show all managers, even the supposedly best in the game types, make really stupid moves. Ned may be dumb at times but it seems a contagious disease that only effects major league managers. Thankfully it seems to afflict all of them.
  13. According tho the Cardinals playing the game the right way and respecting the game means hitting players on a regular basis for perceived slights. Maybe don't hit Braun and you don't have to worry about the journeyman pitcher acting the fool. Pujols was the guy a fe years ago who wouldn't give a AA pitcher who stifled them for 6 innings any credit what so ever. How is that respecting anything? Give the kids his due even if you didn't think he was anything special. The Brewers are young and sometimes that youth shows. Emotion is bound to catch up with them sometimes. I don't agree wiht what Villy did and Ned didn't either. I'm sure he will talk to him abut it. On a different note if the antic of Villy really did wake them up and caused them to start to hit what the hell have they been doing before that? One would think a team that respected the game would play hard all the time and not need the wake up call. They are in a playoff race aren't they? Nice motivational job Tony. It takes an opposing player to get your team to wake up and play hard against the team they are chasing for the wildcard.
  14. Koreana - Nice call Backupcatchers, it's so sad they have my order memorized there Same here Nader. They started out as a hole in the wall takeout place in the same building as we are on Wisconsin and Richmond. They used to deliver the food to us at the shop. It was a very sad day when they became so popular that they moved to Northland. Nice family that runs it.
  15. Yost has done both of these this year, and the haters were out like it was a full moon, and deservedly so Did Yost really hit and run with the pitcher batting? Don't remember that. just read the mention of the most undeserved MOY award ever makes me chuckle. Girardi was manager of the year for a losing team basically by ruining young pitchers and he got one of the prime jobs and promptly ends their 15 or so year playoff run. He finally gets a winning record and isn't even remotely in the running for the award he won with a team that ended up 6 games below .500.
  16. One of my favorite places in Appleton is Koreana. For bar food the 10th Frame is well above the norm.
  17. And Jeter was brutal defensively and became a legend. Hitting .316, with a .386 OBP and .845 OPS and stealing 273 bases in 364 attempts for his career might have lead some to overlook his defensive problems. I think he would have had similar money and notoriety if he would have played third or second as well. I think Hardy would have to improve on his career .269 BA, 329 OBP and 772 OPS and 5 stolen bases vs 5 caught stealing to be able to slide by as a below average defender. And like I mentioned in another post-Hardy could easily sign with New York after Jeter's deal is through. Jeter's deal is up after 2010. Hardy becomes a FA after 2010. You do the math. I have a feeling Hardy won't get to free agency. I think he gets traded after 09 when Escobar should be more than ready and that team signs him long term.
  18. BSCR what you said has merit but don't discount the defensive side of things. He's an average shortstop range wise and steady but unspectacular with the glove over all. He'd be a very good second baseman and his lack of speed wouldn't be a problem at third like it can be at short. I'm not os sure there is that big a difference between an A+ defender at second or third who would still put up the sixth best OPS offensively and a B defensive shortstop who has the 3rd best OPS.
  19. Then we should trade the guys who project well out there for a pitcher. Next year we are going to need more offense than this year with the loss of Sheets and CC. Trades don't bring Cy Young winners for anyone less than a MVP candidate. I don't see why trading a guy who is about to enter his prime is going to help this offense get better. I say keep all of them next year and make Escobar and Gamel force their way up in 2010. No way do I want to rely on two rookies up from AA next year. Not when we already have better options who have proven themselves. Hart has just started to enter his prime years and we have him under our control for a reasonable rate for several more years. Not the best of time to get rid of players if you want to continue to win.
  20. Isn't Shyam Das the arbiter from the contraction hearing? If so Alverez will have to wait for about a three more years before the decision comes down. Not the way to start a career.
  21. Having been annoyed with Andy Dick on comedy central many time I always wanted to know why he was famous enough to be on celebrity roasts and the Gong Show so I took a look. Wow dude has managed to make a very undistinguished career for himself doing nothing. He reminds me of Charles Nelson Riley who managed to be a star on Hollywood Square without anyone actually knowing what made him a star.
  22. St. Louis was brutalized with injuries this year and was already left with a talent level lesser than what the Brew Crew had True series he has had a lot of injuries to deal with but he has more than merely scraps to work with despite that. The best overall player in the game, one of the best catchers, great offensive outfielders and a pretty good third baseman and sound defensive players on the entire infield is hardly table scraps. The defense that team has makes that pitching staff a lot better than our defense does for ours. He has done a fine job with what he has but he has not been given the Dregs of the league. He is not in Pittsburgh or KC. If he had this team above the Brewers at this point yes I would concede he did do a better job than Ned. He hasn't and the talent disparity excuse only goes so far.
  23. I think TLR has done an amazing job -- and Pinella would be a better choice as well. Both Chicago and St Lois have a higher payroll and a much more playoff tested team than Yost does so why is his job so much less impressive than those two? I know you hate the guy. I hate LaRussa much the same way. That doesn't mean I can't concede LaRussa has done a fine job this year. Honestly I think it's time to admit Yost has as well. You can still hate him like I do TLR so it's not that badhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif. I do think his management decisions has led to more losses than wins. You mean like calling a hit and run with the pitcher batting and, surprise of all surprises, getting caught in a double play? Had Ned did that the fire Yost thread would be top of first page for three days afterward and it would have been deserved.
  24. I am pretty sure that Team Chemistry is like the Power of Love as theorized by Huey Lewis. I always knew there was a real reason I liked your posts. Now I think it's because we are both old enough to know this reference.
  25. point one: team chemistry can't be quantified therefore it can't be significant For the sake of argument lets assume this is true. What stat or calculation is there to show something that cannot be quantified is insignificant? If there are none and your premise is true then I used that premise to prove it is false. When something can be used to disproves itself is likely faulty logic. That appears to be the case here. point two: team chemistry results in a variety of outcomes on a line ranging from bad to good' Since we don't have the information available to know if the outcomes would be the same in exact circumstances this is far from verified. If the scientific method is not applicable why do you keep using it? To me it's like using a telephone to dig a hole. If the first type of phone doesn't work and the next brand of phone you try doesn't work any better does that mean it is impossible to dig a hole? No use the right equipment for the job and maybe it will get done. Same here. The normal methods of verification not only doesn't but logically can't work If something can't work why not quit trying to use it? point three: team chemistry is a debilitating myth How do you quantify that? If you can't does that mean it isn't?
