  1. I'm not necessarily talking about next year as much as long term future plans. If it started next year due to circumstances like needing to get LaPorta in there or Cameron not available and Gwynn not ready or traded I think the offense the three of them could bring would somewhat makeup for the lack of experience. In all reality next year will be somewhat like this one in that it will be sort of a transitional period. instead of looking at next year though I'm more interested in the next 5 or so. I think it's fairly reasonable to think both of them could be here that long and would be the backbone of the team by then so why not look long term with were they fit?
  2. Both Braun and Hart play very deep to compensate for their inexperience going back on balls and both let a lot of balls fall in front of them that more experienced outfielders catch. You can't have that out of your CF. Of the two Braun has more reason to still be playing back so deep. The whole reaosn I borught this up is because it appears to me that Braun has adpoted to the Of better or at least quicker than Hart. I think Hart is better today but that gap isn't very wide now and there is more reason to believe Braun has the room for significant improvement than Hart at this point.
  3. I always thought he was a leftfielder but maybe I'm wrong. I tried to look but he's listed as OF so couldn't really tell. In any event it was more or less an after thought to my basic idea since I don't think swtiching left to right is all that big a deal. If all things are equal I'd rather they only swtich two of three but not gonna get to worked up about it if one is viewed as better suited for center long term than the other.
  4. It seems like any discussion about center field revolves around either Gwynn or Hart as the centerfielder which is perfectly understandable. I have been very impressed with how easy the transition was for Braun so far. Given that and his speed, contract status and arm strength is it unreasonable to think he might end up being the long term solution there? I know he hasn't been in the outfield long but Hall did it and he seems to have adapted better to it than either Hall or Hart did so it might not be long before he is equal to or better than either of them. It also would make some amount of sense that given LaPorta's strong minor league showing thus far and his being a leftfielder it would only mean two switches as opposed to three. Just food for thought.
  5. Never meant to imply tha tit will come form the central rahter that it was possible where last year it wasn't. If the Cubs keep up this pace (big if) the divison won't be in range but, as opposed to last season, the post seaosn can be reached without winning the division.
  6. Not really. I would rather see the Cubs go in the tank without an easy excuse. Same here. It would be oh so sweet to win the division with them full strength and we have one of our top pitchers out. Not only would there be no excuse there would be no explanation other than we were better. At this point though they have held serve with all the home games so they deserve to be where they are. I'm very interested to see what happend in the dog days when they go on the road with their best reliever having been overworked on the easy part of their schedule. That pen is above average with Marmol going like he is but kind of shallow after that. But I'm with splitter in that I'm less interested in what they do than what we do. The Brewers ahve layed the toughest part of their schedule and I'm looking forward to more series wins. The way this season is unfolding winning the division may not be the only way to get to post season play like it was last year.
  7. My problem with today's lineup was Dillon at 2B when you have three options that are so much better defensively (Hall, Weeks, Counsell (with Hardy or Hall fielding SS). There will always be a better option than Dillon for one reason or another. That is pretty much the definition of a bench player. They still need to play once in a while both to keep them happy/sharp and to give the regulars a day off. I do my best not to get down on the Brewer fan base, because I know it is the same thing that happens with every other team and the same thing that happens at every job. Outsiders always know how to do it better. Just part of life, but it sure can take the fun out of work and following my favorite teams when I hear so much complaining. Your whole post pretty much summed up my feelings in the issue Undrafted. This particalar part is pretty much why I stopped arguing about Yost any further. I'll just sit back and enjoy the season without the "should Ned be fired today," or "if someone else was the manager we'd have won that game," part of it and have a better time. When the season's over there will be plenty of time to debate whether or not he's the right man for this team.
  8. Rules aren't just for nerds anymore. The reason some of us come here instead of the other Brewere sites are because of the rules. I think the rules provide an atmosphere that allows discussion to remain on topic without the noise of people baiting each other into peeing wars and verbal abuse about others mothers or how much they suck. Without the verbal abuse it keeps people on subject which in turn makes the threads all that much more enjoyable for others to read. Not to mention I already know I'm an idiot so I don't really need to have people tell me every other thread how much of one I am.
  9. I think there is a differance between how someone handles the same media people asking the same questions everyday and what he says to the players behind closed doors professional to porfessional. Every player in that room understands media fodder vs reality. Throwing them under the bus in a visable way amounst reporters in the papers seems to be a poor way of holding players accountable as does throwing tantrums to motivate them. Acting the idiot on the field vs umpires is not in the same category as reporters asking questions. Platooning Bill Hall, demoting Stetter or sending Villy to the pen, seem to me to be very clear examples that he is holding players accountable every way he can in as respectful and meaningful way as possible.
  10. HOF4 does have a point that long road trips do wear on people. Simple things like sleeping in your own bed, going home instead of the airport, eating in familiar spots, playing for a crowd that cheers for you, having the luxury of the home clubhouse vs the usually slightly less luxurious visitors, spending the few hours a day with family and friends vs the same guys you spend the work day with are some things I'd think would have some effect with several long trips over a short period of time.
  11. Except if we are only going by a single year, Counsell is far outproducing Hardy against RHP. Counsell vs RHP: .255/.369/.345 Hardy vs RHP .248/.307/.333 If that trend continues you will see counsell get more time vs righties. When given the choice betweent two bad options there is nothing wrong with going to the hot hand or the guy having a better year over a short period of time IMO. I realize all the arguements about small samples and the dangers of predicting future outcomes based off that. I also realize sometimes a player needs to get his act together and start to produce or other options will be explored. Complacency can change someone from having a bad year to someone who is just bad.
  12. There is not enough to go on for this year alone especially since Hardy isn't hitting any handed pitcher worth anything. It depends on the circumstances. If the criteria is a short term fix until a long term answer comes along I would think basing that off results this year would be at least worth taking into account. Especially when taking into account players who are in the developmental stage oftheir careers. Add into it Hall has a platoon mate that makes htis move sensible. since Hardy has been about the same from both sides of the plate this season he should either be benched in favor of someone better or he plays and we hope he improves.
  13. JJ's three year (2005-2007) splits: vs LHP .297/.359/.558 vsRHP .251/.308/.383 With Braun, Hart, Hall, and Hardy there is a reason this team kills LHP and can't hit RHP. I was looking at this year's performance since Hall's platooning this year appears to be based off of this year's lack of performance coupled with the perfect Platoon mate.
  14. I'm not wishing Yost turns into Pinella, but some emotion when you feel the team is getting the short end of the call can influence the way your team responds and plays It can influence players but not always the way you want. if Yost starts to throw tantrums how long before the whole team starts to throw them and blame all the woes of the team on umps, fans, bad luck, ect instead of themselves? Yost always had his players back in a far more important ways than throwing tantrums when things didn't go their way. I wish we could stop comparing ourselves to the Cubs of last season. First of all the Pinella tantrum was probably more a coincidence in timeing than a cause of the turnaround. Second this team is not the Cubs of 07. It is younger, more unproven and more the pitching is more injury riddled than the Cubs of last year.
  15. I agree he needs to be held accountable but so does JJ Hardy. Hall played very well as a SS a while back, and I don't see JJ Hardy producing any more than Hall. Why does JJ get a pass It's a combination of being held accountable and having alternatives. Hall is muich worse against righties than lefties and there was a capable hitter against righties in AAA. JJ doesn't have the huge differance in his splits so platooning him wouldn't have the same effect as Hall. Sooner or later Hardy will be platooned or replaced if he doesn't turn it around but only when there is someone there to replace him.
  16. Wasn't the reasoning/rumor on why Vargas was let go precisely that he wouldn't accept a bullpen role or demotion? Maybe I'm making that up. I thought he had an option left like Bush did. He had to clear waivers because of his service time but when he did he didn't have a choice in the matter. I constantly hear fabricated statistics about Vargas. Nobody talks about him pitching with a bad back when the team needed him. Instead they holler about the fact that the outcome wasn't great. He was a 4.3 ERA pitcher over the first half of the year. Isn't cherry picking one half of one season the same as fabricating statistics?
  17. I agree with those who feel Hall has been a loyal hard working player who has done eveything asked of him...except play good enough to be an everyday player. I repsect the way he works but at some point results matter. If Ned replaces a player it certainly isn't a knee jerk reaction. Ned sticks with his players to a fault. I doubt this would have a negative impact on the team as a whole because they know they all receive a fair shake from Ned.
  18. Our catchers under Ned have a history of getting off to good starts in the Spring, then after getting a similar "iron man" teatment, they tail off trememdously as the season goes along. Why would think that anything different would happen this year? A few years ago people here were complaining about Moeller playing too much when we had just paid Miller to be an everyday catcher. His first year or two with the team he had a policy of 3 games to two. Last year Estrada played 120 games which was 5 more than he did hte year before. I don't remember him getting a bunch of days off later in the seaosn though it is possible my memory is off. I'm not sure what history you are looking at but it certainly wasn't a pattern of his entire time here.
  19. Why not find out if Jeff Juden has anything left in the tank while your at it Doug? Scott Karl is getting old but he's left handed. any thoughts on starting pitchers instead of Tavarez? Young and his broken nose from San Diego? wouldn't mind that. Wolf has a one year contract around 4.3 million this season. When considering his age, contract and what it would potentially take to get him I think he would be a perfect fit for this team.
  20. If the dropoff to Rivera were more substantial, I could see playing Kendall as often as the Brewers do. It isn't, so they shouldn't. This is the reaosn why I think it has something todo with defnese and game management. Either Kendal is really good at it or Rivera is Estradesque or some combination of the two. When evaluating a catcher defense plays a bigger roll than any other position so OPS+ and such isn't going to be a main reason to play him or not.
  21. It should work but if it doesn't since the money order hasn't been cashed you can cancel the money order. There is a fee for that but you'll at least get some of your money back.
  22. I'm not interested in anecdotal stuff - I'd like to see the stats to back up his reputation. This is one of those areas that anecdotal evidence is the only kind. If there was some sort of stat that showed how well a catcher handled the staff I'm sure it would have been posted multiple times. What we do have is the fact that he is one of if not the best catchers at throwing out runners this season. He has a reputation of being a good game caller for what ever that's worth. We also have the best statof all which is the games played thisyear. If Kendall was no better than Rivera he wouldn't be playing so much.
  23. What bugs me is he really hasn't shown any signs of improvement of defense. They can say he wants to be a complete player all they want. They can tell us that he works as hard on defnese as offense but all that tells me is he really is that bad and won't improve in that area. If it is true he wants to improve and has worked on it then it should be all the more abvious that he really is only a DH.
  24. If this move somehow involves a trade for Greg Maddux that would be cool. I'd be happy with a trade with SD but I'd rather we got Wolf instead of Maddux.
  25. I get what you're saying shelmank but i don't think the extra couple singles Kendall is going to hit would make up for the defense that he brings. It doens't make sense to score one more run if it costs the pitcher two runs. As I said if it does become a problem and his production tappers off so bad as to be a real problem we have an offensive minded catcher in the minors who the Brewers have been grooming to be a possible starter in the near future anyway. When the time comes they can give Kendall a break wihtout harming the team in the process. Until then this is one area I'm not overyly concerned about because of the history of durability with Kendall and the fact that the combo of SImba, Yost and Kendall is one that should be competent to handle. Even if you don't think Yost is smart enough to manage his way out of a paper bag given the other factors this is the one place where maybe he could be considered competent.
