  1. I hate to de that guy but he's young, has an option and Stearns seems to be a guy who isn't afraid of soft tossers. It has nothing to do with his history here but he seems like the type Stearns may have interest in.
  2. Unless you're an established, highly productive player you should expect competition for your job every year. Given some will lose said competition there has to be alternative plans for the loser. This seems like nothing more than that to me. May the best man win.
  3. I was going to say the same thing. It's far easier to put someone who was stretched out as a starter in the bullpen than have someone not stretched out in the rotation. I'm pretty sure the five man rotation isn't set in stone at this time so it makes sense to have every possible starter stretched out in any event.
  4. When there are several teams willing to take on overpriced players because they're marginally better than what they had contracts like this aren't as risky for small market teams as it first appears. The risk is not getting much of a return in prospects if he doesn't live up to his contract. Giancarlo Stanton being a prime example. The problem for the Marlins wasn't financial ruin due to his contract as much as the loss of prospects in return when the inevitably had to trade him.
  5. I guess this means he'll be traded to the Yankees five years from now for three mid level prospects and a boatload of salary relief.
  6. Nothing to add. Just thought this was worthy of two looks. It more than evens out.
  7. In this post you talk about two of your sons. That means you have more than two. In an earlier post you mentioned you have three daughters. Guess that puts you in contention for best farm system on BF.net.
  8. What are the odds people who don't pick up after their dogs in parks are the same ones who don't flush after using a public restroom?
  9. If those 400 ab's all came in one year where he had regular playing time instead of spread out over a couple years I'd give it more credence. Granted it would be better if he hit well even when getting sporadic playing time but that's a pretty big adjustment to make for veterans used to playing every day let alone young guys.
  10. Honestly, each time we've had a pet pass away, figuring out the impossible timing of when's "not too late" but "not too soon" is the most upsetting part for me. Not that the after is awesome, but there is some relief at not having to constantly monitor appetite and symptoms. Appreciate the kind thoughts, though. Last decision I had to make was one of those all time great dogs and it was the week before Christmas. Pets give you a lifetime of joy and one truly awful day. While it's never easy I'd be lying if I wasn't relieved to some extent when the "death watch" was over.

  12. I think what this does show is that there is money in the budget for a player of JT's caliber. Now it's just a matter of Stearns finding that player. Hopefully we're in it enough at the trade deadline to add for the playoff push. While it shows there is money for such a player that doesn't mean there is one like that out there. I didn't think of it until you brought it up but there is a value to saving that money until the trade deadline.
  13. Couple thoughts. I think the Brewers were used to up the price for the Dodgers. They may have been willing accomplices (or not) but the end result is they probably helped him get more than the Dodgers wanted to spend on him. I don't think the money the Brewers might have been willing to spend on Turner means they should necessarily spend that same money on other players. Turner was someone who fit a need that isn't going to be fixed simply by spending that same amount elsewhere. That doesn't mean I don't want them to spend more on players that fit a need. I just don't think the willingness to spend money to make a huge difference should signal the willingness to spend that same money making the fringes better. Nor will I blame them for not doing so if we end up spending less.
  14. 10 of the top 25 ranked teams in wrestling are from the Big Ten. Including the top 3.
  15. I think the change to a more exciting game will come when teams realize the 3TO type hitters are not longer the best way to produce runs. Deadening the baseball may be part of that. Getting less homeruns from an all or nothing approach means the value of contact hitters will increase. Being able to field your position may become more important. Personally I think great defensive plays are more exciting than homeruns. But most teams would rather have an average defensive shortstop who has some power than a great shortstop who can only hit singles because the value of that power outweighs the value of great defense. Reduce that power difference by even a little and the scale tips in favor of the singles hitter. Having less offense doesn't have to mean fewer great plays. IT also would bring back the value of stealing bases and hitting behind runners and such. If we move from needing to steal bases at a 75% clip to score more runs than station to station baseball to 70% then the value of basestealers goes up. Then every time some gets on base there's more chances of something happening on a pitch. That assumes of coarse they keep the deadened ball long enough for those natural forces to change.
  16. So basically to make baseball more popular we need to find ways to make people forget they're watching a baseball game? I don't disagree with you but right there is the problem. And doing anything to address that issue is most certainly going to drive more people away ("purists") than it's going to attract. I don't think people will forget there's a game going on as much as they'll have more reason to tune in or stay tuned in. Not sure why the purists would care since they don't have to participate. It's just something the more casual/new fan might like.
  17. There are games that require intense watching while other games where a more casual approach to viewing is warranted. Baseball is the latter. Which probably explains all the stuff minor league teams do not related to the actual game to keep fans entertained. Instead of making the games shorter it would be better to make the experience more than just what happens on the field. Finding the tv equivalent of minor league entertainers would go a long way to making the ratings better. One would think it would be easier to create an interactive tv viewing experience these days with access to phones and smart tvs. Anyway I don't think how many runs are scored are the problem. It's the lack of balance within the league. Why follow a game that's so rigged in a small number of team's favor? Which is why I'm more interested in what this means for the Brewers this season than I am how it effects the popularity of the game.
  18. Not sure making the ball more difficult to hit hard is going to help a hitter who already has trouble hitting the ball hard. I think his ability to take walks is more helpful than his ability to make contact. It'll be interesting to see if a team built on pitching and defense like the Brewers are looking to be is hurt or helped by this.
  19. Had a lit of a freakout today. I looked at the temperature and it said 0. I'm wondering how can there be no temperature? How do I dress for no temperature? Then I realized I forgot to fill my thermometer.
  20. Their chili is weird too. I like it but is it really chili?
  21. Our team has traditionally been offense oriented. It got us a total of zero championships. We got one runner up trophy in 40 plus years. Now we have a great group of pitchers and we just added someone who would make that group better. I'd rather win 2-1 than lose 5-4.
  22. I'm left handed. If I can just improve my velocity and control to league average I'll be rich. You can't just will yourself into something you're not.
  23. It'll be interesting to see why. I was always under the impression the union was for the DH because it moves bench players role to a starters level role. It also helped aging or defensively challenged players. Seems like a given it would replace a bench role with a higher salary job for each team. It also helps give other players a chance to have a few lighter days to boot. Can't think adding playoff spots would be the problem because of the added money.
  24. I started watching the Mandalorian last night. I must say I was disappointed. He didn't fix instruments of any kind let alone tiny guitars.
  25. I thought you were a police officer.
