I've been listening to MLB network the last few days and the Marlins are very high on Monte. They are banking on a Brinson/Monte OF for the next 5 years.
His projections are 236/324/431 he's not an MLB regular and there's no way we should be trading anyone to play Choi. He's had an awesome spring but it's nothing more than that.
Sounds like he had some arm fatigue and the Braves just cut him. If it isn't season ending I'd love to stash him on the DL and see if he has anything. When on he could be a solid 2/3 . Basically insurance in case Nelson has a setback.
He must be waiting till June so there's no draft compensation for him and I'm sure someone who's a contender will have a spot open up between now and then.
MLBPA Files Grievance Against Four Teams Over Revenue Sharing Funds The Major League Baseball Player’s Association has initiated a grievance proceeding against the Athletics, Marlins, Pirates, and Rays regarding those teams’ spending of revenue sharing dollars, according to a report from Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. This general issue has been percolating for some time, even as additional concerns have arisen as to the pace of free-agent signings over the 2017-18 offseason. The MLBPA reportedly engaged with the league office over the Miami and Pittsburgh organizations’ spending earlier this year.
Part of the problem is only a handful of teams can scale up to the luxury tax . The Brewers are close to being a WC team if they could manage a 190M payroll then there would be more FA signings. It seems like all of the big payroll teams are at the tax and DET decided to cutback. If teams like MKE and MN or PIT would be able to get to the tax when they are competitive then that fixes the FA market.
McHugh, 30, posted strong results last year after a somewhat tepid 2016 effort, but only after missing a major chunk of the season due to injury. He ended up posting a 3.55 ERA with 8.8 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 63 1/3 frames over a dozen starts. Sounds like the Astro's might be interested in trading him per mlbtraderumors
They need to cut payroll now , not at the deadline per mlbtraderumors. Yes I agree they could get alot more if he's a sub 2 ERA pitcher at the deadline. They do need a CF so maybe Broxton and a 10-15 prospect would be closer to what they would want.
KC is looking to get rid of money to resign Homser. Kelvin had a subpar 2017 but was awesome for 4 years before that. He's 28 and a FA after this year so I'm sure he's motivated to have a great year considering what relievers are getting paid. He's owed 7.8 mil so if we covered the cost of the contract we shouldn't have to give up a top 10 prospect. We'd have a lock down 7-8-9 relievers and would help solidify us as a playoff team.
I wonder why more contracts aren't front loaded. If we have him 35,30,25,20,15 he would get his $125 mil but that back end of the contract might be movable and we have the cash now, in 5 years we are going to need to be locking up some of our FAs.
Marlins infielder Starlin Castro would prefer not to suit up for his new organization, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). He recently landed in Miami in the blockbuster swap that sent superstar Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees. It’s not difficult to see why Castro would prefer to find a new home. The Marlins are clearly in a rebuilding stance, with several top veterans already having been dealt and a few more still on the block. Castro is already guaranteed to earn at a healthy clip for the next two seasons — $10MM and $11MM apiece followed by a $1MM buyout on a 2020 option — and he’d surely prefer to draw his salary while playing for a contender. We have the money and it we picked up most of it we wouldn't have to give up a big prospect . He had a solid slash line last year 300/338/454 with 16 HR. I'm not sure how he grades defensively but this might not be a bad option for the next 2 years.
