  1. I think Jimmy Nelson would be more valuable in the role that Wade Davis pitched for Kansas City in 2014: middle relief, being able to go 1-3 innings at a time, as a set up man. Given proper rest in between appearances he could probably give the Brewers 100 innings with an ERA less than 1.35 I hope it works out for him as a starter but I think if it doesn't work out there are other valuable roles he could play
  2. Mark Attanasio bought the Brewers for $200 million. Does anyone have any reason to doubt that if he sold the Brewers today he'd get at least $400-$600 million? The notion that the Brewers can't afford to spend more or that they are just breaking even is completely illogical. Forbes estimated the Brewers value at $565 Million in 2014 http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mlm45fdgdd/25-milwaukee-brewers/ So Mark has nearly tripled his money in 10 years but some fans actually buy into the notion that we cannot spend more money on talent? What a frustrating franchise to root for! I'll stick with 'em but wow.
  3. This cannot be emphasized enough. Success breeds success. If the Brewers were able to field a true World Series contender year in & year out (or 5 years out of every 10, allowing for rebuilds) their revenue would be through the roof. Merch sales, ticket sales & most importantly TV money
  4. Kind of out of leftfield here (pun intended) but has anyone seen Khris Davis' 2013 Strat-O-Matic card? Looks like a Hall of Fame outfielder on that card .... small sample stats will do that for you
  5. Yes and we don't give up on a quality player like Davis with the raw power he has proven to have at the MLB level because he had a down season last year. Now, if he goes out and really struggles again this season against RHP, then we move towards a platoon or moving on completely. But it is absolutely crazy to move on from Davis completely against RHP because of a injury plagued season. This isn't about feelings. This is about allowing your young players to prove what they can and cannot do. Platooning him and occasionally starting him vs RHP when Braun/Gomez need a rest is hardly giving up on him. It is putting him in a position to succeed and more importantly putting the Brewers in a position to succeed. If Davis shows that he can consistently hit RHP I'm sure the Brewers will make a change. He looked hopelessly overmatched vs RHP last season and there are serious adjustments he needs to make in his approach. A power hitter with a low OBP is not very valuable in playoff games/big games/pennant races
  6. As he should. This is a good thing. Parra is vastly better defensively than Davis, there is no argument there. And he is better vs RHP in most statistical categories. The platoon advantage is important. Davis is under team control until 2020. He has plenty of time to show the Brewers that he can be an every day player. I have some pretty serious doubts as to whether the Brewers can really be a contender in 2015, but if they are going to contend, there are a few things that need to happen: Limiting at-bats vs RHP for Davis Limiting at-bats vs LHP for Lind Limiting at-bats vs LHP for Gennett Not abusing Will Smith I'm pleasantly surprised & pleased to hear Roenicke talking about Parra like he is. I just hope that if Lind & Gennett struggle vs LHP that the Brewers don't wait until June to do something about it
  7. Khris Davis hit .239 with a .298 OBP vs RHP last season. We aren't (supposedly) rebuilding. We aren't a AA or AAA team. This isn't about Davis' feelings. This is Major League Baseball. He should sit, often, vs RHP
  8. Easy to forget that Aramis started in the 2014 All-Star game. He is clearly at or near the end of the line though. Hope he has a great final season.
  9. Platooning Davis/Parra is logical & smart. Davis can still play occasionally vs RHP when Braun & Gomez need days off and Parra is in for them
  10. Agreed K-Rod is not very good anymore. Not among the top 20 relief pitchers in Baseball. This speaks to the failure of the Brewers in developing pitching talent and the failure of the front office in understanding advanced analytics and saber-metrics. K-Rod had a 125 ERA+ last year. His ERA+ over the last 3 years is 115 with a 1.173 WHIP. In an era that is featuring many of the greatest closers of All-Time and where teams often have 2-3 elite relief pitchers on their staff, those numbers are truly horrid. Best we can do is hope for a repeat of 2013 where he is very good for half a year and we can deal him at the trade deadline. I literally cannot wait for Melvin to retire and the Brewers to bring in a new GM who understands the modern game as it is evolving. Nightmare scenario is it is Gord Ash who replaces Melvin and we get the same old same old approach
  11. Rooting for the Marlins on this one!
  12. Mine too! The Yankees have worked Moncada out again in the last 25 hours. I think they are zeroing in on him
  13. If you use run differential as the main stat, the 1939 Yankees were the best
  14. I think that Roenicke is (somewhat) tied to Doug Melvin and have a sense that Melvin may retire after this season or next season. If a new GM is brought in, he may want a new manager (his own guy) unless Roenicke takes the Brewers deep into the playoffs again
  15. MLB Network alluded to this, today If the Brewers get off to a poor start will Roenicke be fired early on? How much of a leash will they give him? How well do the Brewers need to do for Roenicke to retain his job for 2016?
  16. Anything to help prevent Roenicke from abusing Will Smith like he did last year is a good thing.
  17. I would very much prefer that MLB does not tinker with the rules..... let teams adjust. I don't want them to try to turn MLB into a league that it is already superior already, than such as the NFL or NBA, all as an attempt to make it more "popular", when the game is already awash in cash as is
  18. On the positive side of things Manfred has said he has no interest in bringing the DH to the National League
  19. I've heard him described as a "switch-hitting version of Robinson Cano", except that Moncada has shown much more patience at the plate, walking a lot more than Cano.... yes please thank you very much
  20. without looking up the numbers, he seems lately like a 3TO type of closer (strikeouts, HR's, Walks)
  21. Jon Heyman on the MLB Network today mentioned the Brewers as a team possibly in on Shields. He did say that Doug Melvin has denied any interest in Shields, but that is typical of Melvin at any time I just find it hard to believe that Mark A & Doug won't go after the 30 something free agent pitcher and will instead turn to a home grown 25 year old pitcher. That has almost never been their way of doing things. Sometimes it works (Lohse) sometimes it doesn't (Suppan) and other times it is hard to tell for sure if the $$$ could've been better spent or not (Garza) I personally hope they don't sign Shields, but I would not at all be surprised if they do.
  22. It isn't obvious that Nelson is worse than Gallardo, at least in terms of 2015? Interesting....
  23. I'm looking forward to the trade deadline and getting some very good prospects in the Brewers system in trades for Lohse & others, as the Brewers will very likely be out of it by July. Those prospects, in addition to the players brought on board in the Gallardo trade, will be fun to follow. I like the players the Brewers drafted in 2014, too, especially Harrison. So I'm feeling optimistic about the 2017 Brewers when the next wave of players hits. I'll be looking forward to seeing/watching for development from Davis, Gennett, Segura & Nelson, as well as following the minor league Brewers players.....
  24. The original premise still stands. The Brewers are better off long-term from the Gallardo trade, but now they are even worse off for the 2015 season. We are still, most definitely, in trouble.
  25. While I'm thrilled the Brewers seem smart enough to trade a starting pitcher for prospects, I think any talk of Nelson being just as good as Gallardo seems overly optimistic. I have hope that Nelson can develop into a credible starting MLB pitcher, he certainly wasn't one last year
