  1. If it is true that all it would have taken is $3 million to $5 million more per year to sign Jose Abreu then I think either: the Brewers front office and ownership are complete and total idiots, or, they are not sincere about wanting to contend for a title and are more concerned with turning a profit
  2. I hope the girlfriend's parents are awarded some of his millions as a result of homicide by drunk driving. A terribly tragic waste
  3. I will say this: Peralta has the potential to develop into a true ace
  4. With apologies to the mathematicians here, I agree one thousand percent! For those who say "well if you can get a wildcard slot you can go all the way", I say: not likely with our current pitching staff. You need an ace to dominate the biggest games, or at least be able to compete against the Bumgarner/Kershaw types. MLB is increasingly all about pitching. If you don't have a true ace you don't have a true chance. And excuse me please for being insensitive to our multi-millionaire owner, but him losing $20 million or whatever is akin to me misplacing a 5 dollar bill
  5. Yes I'm doubting it Other than a much needed upgrade in LF, platoon mates needed at 1B & 2B, and 3B depth for the inevitable Aramis injury?
  6. Sign Scherzer and keep him for "go for it" windows in 2015 & 2016 and then trade him (and his contract)
  7. Generally I use Fangraphs for WAR stats. That is where I usually go for comparative stats. Found it interesting that Fangraphs ranked Lucroy 6th and Gomez 10th in WAR, overall, in MLB
  8. love to see this happen. Would absolutely love it. C'mon Brewers, get it done!
  9. I think when you compare the Giants (where we want to be) with the Brewers (where we are) it is important to look at a few key positions: Hunter Pence had a 4.7 WAR last year, Khris Davis had a 1.8 WAR. The Brewers should not be satisfied with a 1.8 WAR out of the corner outfield spot opposite Braun. Likely they feel that Davis can upgrade that productivity. He will really need to. Pablo Sandoval had a 3.0 WAR, Aramis Ramirez had a 2.1 WAR
  10. Very true. However, the Giants have been much better at drafting and developing pitching. We passed on Madison Bumgarner. They also traded for Jake Peavy and we didn't (Edwin Escobar & Heath Hembree are good solid pitchers but nothing incredible). They traded for Hunter Pence for the equivalent of Martin Maldonado and Tyler Thornburg and we didn't. They also have a much better manager than we do. They signed Michael Morse to a contract for $6 million which we could have beaten and would have certainly upgraded our 1B with Morse. The Giants didn't have a starting position player older than 32 on the roster in 2014, i.e. they weren't overpaying for an aging veteran (hello Aramis Ramirez) I could go on and on. The Giants are a great example of doing everything the Brewers could have done but didn't But yeah I hear you
  11. I suppose. But so far this franchise has zero World Series championships
  12. I have no idea if Cirillo would be a good manager or not but the post-game interviews would at least be entertaining
  13. Good call on Beckham.... he really isn't much of a SS but he can play solid 2B or 3B He did, however have a very weird split in 2013: .287 vs RHP, .195 vs LHP
  14. I've seen this line of thinking in a few places. While the perception might be the Brewers are more than one or two players away from contending what they did last season says they really are just a player or two away. It looks a lot worse than it is due to how badly it ended but overall we were six games short of what the World Series winners had. Adding one legitimate starter where we didn't have one would go a long way towards winning six extra games throughout the season. I hope you are right I know it is easy for me to say because it isn't my money to spend but it sure seems to me that the Brewers say they are "all in" but if they spent an extra $30 million on 2 more elite players they'd have more of a legit chance to win it all and would make that money back (plus some) from Brewers-mania merchandise sales/tickets sold/endorsements etc etc Sign Max Scherzer & Ben Zobrist, for instance or Sandoval & James Shields.... really go for it.....
  15. I was under the impression that Counsell was more into front office work than coaching/managing
  16. Lucroy is an excellent defensive catcher, and has been lauded as such by national writers, scouts, defensive metrics.... claiming Lucroy isn't a great defensive catcher by merely looking at caught stealing stats is somewhat like saying Ben Sheets wasn't a good pitcher in 2004 because his win-loss record was 12-14! Lucroy is one of the best pitch framers in MLB. He is excellent defending the bunt, blocking balls in the dirt, & handling pitchers
  17. Pudge had a cannon for an arm but was light years worse than Yadier at blocking balls in the dirt, calling a game, handling pitchers, framing pitches and being a team leader. But yes, he could throw out a baserunner or three.
  18. Gomez was 10th in the enire MLB in WAR last year (according to Fangraphs), he would likely get us a very good return, and trading him would likely be very smart. Our perpetually "All-In" owner couldn't fathom it, though
  19. According to Fangraphs Maldanoado was worth more WAR than Conger last season despite only playing in 52 games
  20. I suppose if Braun is back 100%, that is something the Brewers can sell the public on. I can hear Melvin now "with Braun back 100% it is almost like we traded for an MVP right-fielder"
  21. Does Mark A actually think that he can fill Miller Park again trotting out the same team plus Lind? That's the other question I'm intrigued with answers to.... can the Brewers really sell this team as viable contenders to the public in Wisconsin? I have my doubts on that....
  22. I think Lind will be an average defensive 1B. Better than Fielder, not as great as the best out there. My question is: does anyone think the Brewers can contend in 2015 if they are are now essentially done in terms of player personnel changes?
  23. I don't think we'll see any more moves of significance. Lind and the July/August additions of Parra & Broxton are all we get
  24. Another comment that Melvin made in that Bill Michaels interview really struck me: the Brewers passed on Madison Bumgarner in the draft because they thought his delivery would lead to arm problems. Arguably the biggest mistake in Melvin's career
  25. Doug Melvin's comments on the Bill Michaels radio show: "in many ways our July & August acquisitions of Parra & Broxton are a big part of adding to our team for next year." I understand what he's getting at, but part of me says "huh? Say what?!" Sure sounds like Lind, Parra, & Broxton are the big acquisitions and nothing else of significance is going to happen... hopefully he's bluffing
