  1. And both somewhat overrated in the context of the All-Time greats because they didn't take a lot of walks and didn't hit for much power.
  2. My impression of Roenicke: I've never seen a manager who liked to bunt more! And a lot of times the bunts work....
  3. If this game doesn't convince Melvin & Roenicke that this is not a playoff team, I don't know what will! I suppose they could say "it is just one game", but on top of the way they've played the rest of the season?
  4. I would definitely take Olt, too...sounds like the Rangers are refusing to deal Profar but that may just be posturing in the media. I think it somewhat depends on whether the Phillies are willing to deal Hamels. If Hamels is unavailable, teams will be forced to overpay for Greinke
  5. We have tickets for tomorrow's game, but I decided to give mine to my nephew. Way too hot for me. I'd rather sit in air conditioning and watch the game on TV
  6. Are you just speculating or do you know this to be true?. I've only personally seen him play once, and that was in a minor league game before his injury. I'm basing what I wrote about his "defense being a work in progress" based on numerous reports I've read about about him. A buddy of mine who lives in Nashville and goes to lots of Sounds games says that Bianchi's defense seems to be getting better and that he is a player who is easy to root for (great attitude, hustles, works hard, accommodating to fans etc)
  7. That is fascinating to me as I have a 9 year old baseball playing fanatic son who is a pretty decent hitter. He's been coached up to stay balanced in his swing and step into the pitch. Hank Aaron was a front foot swinger and that worked out pretty well for him Somewhat Off-Topic but if anyone has or knows baseball playing kids, I highly recommend Brad Woodall's baseball clinics in the Madison area. Woodall was a MLB pitcher (and a former Brewer) but also a college pitcher/outfielder who hit over .270 in MLB, he is a great teacher/coach and has much to teach kids about the proper mechanics of hitting, pitching, & fielding. My kid has learned a ton from him
  8. We usually sit on the 1st base side during summer day games, for the shade. As I understand it, the concourse on the 300 level is air-conditioned, so a retreat into the air-conditioning in between innings could help. We're sitting in that area on the 4th vs Miami, I'll report back after the game
  9. The concern with Bianchi is his defense, which apparently he is improving on but still not MLB ready yet. He's always been able to hit
  10. Disagree that Greinke is a better pitcher than Cain. Cain is much more consistent year to year, plus he's much more proven in the postseason. They are close, and Greinke might have better overall stuff, but so far in their careers, the results favor Cain
  11. Braun's swing reminds me of Joe DiMaggio's, although Braun doesn't follow through as much as Joltin' Joe Ironically, Braun's approach at the plate is very similar to Derek Jeter's. I'd be willing to bet that when Braun was a kid his favorite player was Jeter. Similar mannerisms approaching the plate, similar in his swing in not following through fully a lot of times, similar hand up to the umpire as he settles into the box. Braun has a much nicer swing than Jeter though, but up until it is time to swing, it is very similar
  12. It is extremely difficult to build a solid, let alone great, pitching staff in MLB. Losing that many years of Gallardo would hurt, but then again as HiAndTight points out, that is precisely why trading Gallardo would bring us back players of value. In a lot of ways, it is a great idea in theory, however in reality there are a few perhaps insurmountable challenges: 1) We have a GM who sincerely believes that you can build a World Series team with the likes of Yuni B as a starting SS! In other words he feels he can "cut corners" in building a team. And further compounding the problem: he was almost proven right!!!! Because of this, Melvin likely feels that he is just a player or two away from striking Gold again... 2) Keeping Gallardo, and re-signing Greinke or spending the Greinke money on another impact player will make Melvin feel like they are just a player or two away. 3) Ken Rosenthal recently reported that the Brewers do not want to do a complete rebuild, that they feel they are (here it comes again) "just a player or two away from contending again", so if the Brewers deal Greinke it would likely be for "major league ready pitching". (which, honestly, didn't make a lot of sense to me, i.e. why would a contending team trade away MLB ready pitching in a pennant race?)
  13. Hart is exactly the type of player I don't want to see the Brewers give $10 million to $15 million a year to. As someone else said, his OBP is currently at .308, and that is historically bad for a starting 1B... he's a career .330 OBP and .815 OPS and 114 OPS+ guy.... those are really pretty horrible numbers for a cost-controlled guy at 1B, let alone someone you wanna give how much money to, again? It is scary to think that the Brewers would even consider such a thing... Hart's numbers are much much closer to Travis Ishikawa's numbers this year than an All-Star 1B
  14. Carlos Ruiz is now batting .354 with a .421 OBP and a .983 OPS with 9 HR's and 39 RBI's Does he deserve the All-Star Game start over Yadier Molina? Molina is batting .310 with a .370 OBP and .882 OPS with 11 HR's and 41 RBI's
  15. Pretty crazy, although many think that Alan Trammel should be in.... Thought he was. Nope Trammell isn't in the Hall of Fame, despite being one of the top SS's of his era, hitting .285 in his career with Gold Glove defense, batting .450 in the 1984 World Series in which he led the Tigers to the title, finishing 2nd in the MVP voting in 1987 in which he hit .343 with 28 HR's, and playing 20 years all with the same team. Trammell along with Dick Allen are perhaps the players most deserving of being in the Hall of Fame who are not in....
  16. Taking a look at the present day Brewers I see a strong need for a low cost, plus left-handed bat off the bench who can play 1B, RF and even 3B in an emergency. Gamel at the very least fits that criteria. He's a pretty strong upgrade over Green and Ishikawa (in my opinion) at this point. Unless he's part of a blockbuster trade that brings back a spectacular someone, you keep Gamel as a utility player with a chance to hit his way back into the starting lineup. The Brewers would really be rolling the dice extending Hart. If they do keep Hart I like him more at 1B than RF
  17. The top free agent pitchers to be are, in order of most valued, in my opinion): Cole Hamels (likely traded at deadline) Greinke (who knows yet) Ryan Dempster (injured but if healthy will be traded) James Shields (won't be dealt at the deadline) Brandon McCarthy (likely dealt at deadline) Kyle Lohse (won't be dealt at the deadline) Jake Peavey (likely dealt at the deadline) Marcum Gavin Floyd (likely dealt at deadline) Anibal Sanchez (likely dealt at deadline) Ervin Santana (won't be traded) Edwin Jackson (won't be traded) Derek Lowe (likely not traded, but maybe) Erik Bedard (will the Pirates be buyers & not sellers? Wow) Joe Blanton (likely traded) Jeremy Guthrie (likely traded) Carl Pavano (likely traded) Brett Myers (likely traded) Brandon League (likely traded) So, the Brewers should be able to get something for Marcum, but there will be better pitchers or arguably just as good pitchers available at the deadline. And then there is the injury concern with Marcum Myers & League are interesting, as closers likely dealt, their availability via trade will drive down the market for K-Rod a bit
  18. I like Bourn a lot, but he'll be a heckuva risky signing for someone. He'll be 30 next season and likely his SB rate will slow considerably soon, which will take away his value a lot. It'd be way different if he was a Rickey Henderson type with a .400+ OBP, or even a Time Raines type with a .390+ OBP, but he's not. All that said, it'd be pretty fun to have him on the Brewers, but wow that'd be risky and I think he'll get paid way more than he probably deserves.
  19. They called up McClendon for Thornburg's spot. Thank you. I missed that, obviously. Pretty soon, the Brewers will figure out who they are and whether they are in it or not. If they become sellers I hope we'll see a lot less of the Izturis & Ishikawa types and see more of the prospects like Green or even Logan Schafer playing every day. Schafer is hitting .294/.348 in AAA this year. The Brewers should get a good look at him in MLB and see where he is at....
  20. I believe they are filling Thornburg's spot with Estrada, aren't they? I think they like Izturis more than Maysonnet. Pretty much a toss-up there to me.
  21. The more I think about it, the more I think Paul is completely correct here. Corey Hart is exactly the type of player the Brewers need to not extend. Especially with a limited salary cap and big money already going wisely to Braun & Yo. Put the Hart $$$ towards a Greinke offer
  22. I used to love the old threads a few years back (when all I did was read here) about how Bill Hall could fly to the moon without a spaceship and cure AIDS and figure out the meaning of life etc.... we can now add "intrepid reporter" to his credentials
