  1. Wow, no pressure or anything! If Roenicke can take this injury riddled team to the playoffs, he deserves to just be handed the Manager of the Year award for the next 5 years
  2. That is what I was thinking as well... One thing I like about his approach at the plate is his ability to take walks. His OBP is usually 80-90 points above his batting average every year
  3. He has gotten a lot better than he used to be, he's clearly worked very hard at it. His career MLB caught stealing % is just 16%, which is horrific. That is the kind of fielding % where they eventually find a different position for you... but it is better this year... in the bigger sample of his minor league stats it is at 25% I think he's improved significantly at the other aspects of catching in the last few years. He's not great, or even very good, but he's not the liability he used to be
  4. According to Ron Roenicke, Maldonado will be starting at catcher tomorrow and for the next few games as they try to get Kottaras healed up... I thought it'd be good to give Maldanado his own thread...he and his family have got to be pretty excited, it has been a long road for Martin to get to MLB, as he was a 17 year old rookie in 2004 He is a plus defender with a great arm (42% caught stealing pct. throughout his minor league career) and that will be fun to watch.... He's struggled as a hitter, and is hitting just .198/.270 in AAA this year, but did hit .287/.373 in 2011 dividing his time between AA/AAA. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=maldon001mar
  5. ha! meant to write perseverence! whoops
  6. I dunno, I suppose it really depends on how he closes out his career and whether he finishes with over 500 HR's. He is a "maybe", to me... a very good player who has never really been dominant in terms of being thought of as "the best in the league"... but then I've been thinking of Adam Dunn as a potential Hall of Famer so I should probably rethink Konerko Hitting 40 HR's for a World Series winning team certainly helps. A career OPS+ of just 123 for a 1B doesn't exactly scream "Hall of Fame!" to me.... His best seasons have been 2010 & 2011 and now he's even better this year, which is remarkable for a 36 year old. If that trend continues for a few years and he finishes with 500+ HR's and a .290+ career batting average, I think he might get in... But how can it continue? How does a player get better in his mid-30's? Pretty rare
  7. After his 2nd Tommy John surgery he was thought of as not as good of a pitcher as Chris Narveson going into 2011 (and much more of a risk). $$$ was definitely a factor in that decision as well as Capuano was paid $1.5 million by the Mets whereas Narveson made $441,000 in 2011 Their ERA's and ERA+ scores in 2011 were pretty similar, with Narveson being slightly better/ Capuano's story is really one of incredible perverseness and toughness and it is good to see his success
  8. I think you guys are pointing out very valid reasons (valid in the sense of how the sportswriters will view it) as to why it'll be a big challenge to make it to the HOF for Dunn. Because of that, he'll probably need 600 HR's to have a shot. Maybe 575+. Unless he is part of a World Series Championship and factors heavily in that Series and finishes with 500+ HR's There are players in the HOF with horrible career BA's and 500+ HR's, such as Harmon Killebrew. But Killebrew was an All-Star many times and played in the postseason and played better D than the Big Donkey....
  9. Braun is #12 All-Time in career Slugging %. Just behind Rogers Hornsby & Joe DiMaggio and ahead of Musial, Mays, and Mantle. Yes those guys had declines at the end of their careers that effected their overall stats, but the Great 8 hasn't reached his peak yet.
  10. From what I understand, Bianchi has struggled somewhat with the glove. Ransom isn't exactly Ozzie Smith (or even Cesar Izturis) defensively, but I think the Brewers feel that at this time Bianchi might be an even bigger risk defensively
  11. I wholeheartedly agree... that is exactly what makes ranking players from different eras so fun.... Comparing players based on their peers is effective but sometimes flawed. For instance: just because there weren't a lot (or any really) of power hitting SS's in Cal Ripken's time shouldn't automatically elevate him to near the top of the SS list
  12. Depends on how good Lawrie's Steroid Dealer is and how good the masking agents are.... I apologize, I couldn't resist. And no, I'm not accusing Lawrie of using steroids, just taking a shot at Sheffield the juicer
  13. Brett Lawrie's OPS+ right now is 84, that is below replacement level. His career OPS+ is at 117. You cannot really point to a 1/4 of a season as statistical proof of anything which means that this year for Lawrie doesn't prove much either....yet. However we can look at the half a season of Lawrie's MLB career and see that as nothing close to Ryan Braun's talent and production That said, Braun has never put up a quarter of a season anywhere close to what Lawrie has done this year. 3 HR's in 40 games? A .312 OBP? Those are the kind of numbers Braun never puts up for a 40 game period The only response to that is Lawrie is still young and that may be the case As to their Minor League Stats: Lawrie put up those AAA numbers in a bandbox in Vegas where balls fly out at ridiculous paces. Lawrie's AA stats at Huntsville were worse than Braun's, a .856 OPS to a .797 OPS (and yes Lawrie was younger). We'll see how Lawrie develops, or doesn't. I think Braun is an elite hitter and Lawrie just...isn't Braun's career slugging % is 12th All-Time right now. He is just below Rogers Hornsby and Joe DiMaggio and ahead of Mays, Musial & Mantle. And Braun's Slugging % this season of .630 is an improvement over his career average! Do you really believe Lawrie has that type of potential? I don't
  14. Cobb & Speaker were found not guilty.
  15. The Big Donkey (Adam Dunn) went yard again tonight. 15 HR's on the season. He's on pace for 53 this season... he now has 379 career HR's and a career .374 OBP ... He is 32 years old. Do you think Dunn will make the Hall of Fame if he hits 500 HR's? Or will he need to hit 600 to get in? Other than last season, he has pretty much averaged 40 HR's a season for 7-8 straight years. I could see him hitting another 200 HR's over the next 5-6 seasons and being around 570 for his career at age 37 or 38... what do you think?
  16. Being great for much longer than Pedro, or Koufax (another truly great pitcher with a shortened career) would indeed give someone a chance to make the Top 20. But Blyleven was only truly great in a few seasons ('73, '77, '84), never won a Cy Young, never even came in 2nd in the Cy Young voting (and granted, Cy Young voting, especially back then, was skewed towards W-L records)... looking at OPS+, Blyleven's best year of 156 is just 2 points above Pedro's career average.... If you look at Pedro's career stats, he scorches Blyleven in so many statistical categories (20-4 in 2002 with a 2.26 ERA in the Steroid era pitching in Fenway Park! I mean c'mon now! Or how about in 2000: 1.74 ERA, 0.737 WHIP, 11.8 K/9, those are truly dominant numbers that Blyleven never approached....) Pedro pitched in 476 games over the course of 18 years.... Koufax is another one who should be ranked much higher than Blyleven
  17. I'm glad to see Randy Johnson up to #8, I think he should be in the Top 5 and I think he's better than Matthewson & Pete Alexander and possibly Walter Johnson especially when you start comparing the eras (not the ERA's!) they pitched in... Randy Johnson was pitching against juicers like Bonds, Sosa, McGwire etc... Walter Johnson pitched against Ty Cobb and who else? No Black ballplayers in his league, nobody from the Dominican Republic etc etc Pedro & Blyleven being tied is a crazy crazy notion. Blyleven was good but he wasn't anywhere near as good as Pedro... Nolan Ryan and his 112 ERA+ at #13 All-Time? Hilarious
  18. When is that gonna start? (Lawrie hitting as well as Braun). Granted, Lawrie is still younger than Braun was in Braun's rookie year, and it is still a small sample of just 300 at-bats, but so far Lawrie isn't anywhere close to Braun as a hitter. We'll see, he's definitely got potential...
  19. Adam Dunn was a guy who hit 38 HR's or more 7 years in a row and missed a grand total of 23 games in those 7 years combined and I don't believe was ever on the disabled list.
  20. I believe the accusation was that they had colluded to throw 1 game in order to have Cobb's team get in 3rd place in the final standings and thus collect money for a 3rd place finish instead of 4th Cobb and Speaker were forced to resign as managers by the American League but then were later reinstated shortly after that when Commisioner Landis found them not guilty. As far as I know, the accusation was never about either of them fixing games for gamblers' money or fixing games in collusion with known criminals or gamblers
  21. I don't believe so. Baines played with the White Sox and Orioles 2 different times in his career but never in the scenario we are talking about here. He played with the Orioles in '93, '94 & '95 and then signed with the White Sox for the 1996 season and was traded back to the Orioles at the deadline in 1997
  22. That would be amazing. What I'm wondering is: is that even legal? I mean, is it legal (legal in terms of MLB rules) to have all of that pre-planned in advance? Has that ever happened before in MLB history? i.e. a player is traded at the deadline and then re-signed in the off season? I could see a scenario where a player gets traded and the GM says "we'd still like to sign you for next year", and the player says "well, cool, give me the best offer when the time comes and my agent and I will weigh it against all the other offers...." etc But to have it worked out in advance? Is that legal? Just wondering...
  23. Gambling is banned because it effects the integrity of the game How many times did players that were alcoholics or cocaine addicts or steroids users effect the outcome of games? A whole heckuva lot. How many times did gamblers (non-baseball associated gamblers) get inside info about a player being drunk at 5am before a day game and bet against that team? A whole heckuva lot It is a little bit more complicated, when looking at the big picture, than to say "he gambled, he's out of the Hall of Fame".... if it cannot be proven that he bet against his own team, if it cannot be proven that he fixed games or fixed point spreads, then he should be in the Hall of Fame. In my opinion.
  24. Very true, if one of the Rangers' biggest AL competitors (Angels, Yankees, Tigers etc) trade for Hamels at the deadline, there will be all that much more pressure for the Rangers to trade for Greinke
