  1. Add that fracas to the times I wish Tony Plush was still on the team.
  2. Why are other teams such babies? I'm not saying the Brewers never try to start anything (ahem, Prince...) but it's always because of some legitimate grievance like a HBP, not just "I don't like that you got a hit off me" Maybe MLB needs to fly Brian McCann in to mediate these disrespectful Brewers.
  3. Do you want the Brewers to play competent defense, or do you want to see them sock a few more dingers? http://wisportsconsin.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/simp3.jpg
  4. I'm still a Rickie fan and actually think he could still outproduce Gennett, but it looks like he just doesn't want to be on this team anymore. Not that he's intentionally sabotaging, but it appears to be a difficult psychological/physical adjustment to be a backup for the first time in his professional career entire life as a baseball player.
  5. Exactly! You and opposing fans would forget Braun was even on the team, taking some pressure off and letting him play at his best again.
  6. I'm not saying he's the best player, but now that Gomez actually shows a decent eye at the plate, does he have the best raw tools of any player in baseball? His speed/strength combination is ridiculous, he's arguably the best outfielder in the game, and now it seems like he can legitimately be expected to hit .285-.300 over a full season. A guy like Mike Trout is going to connect for more home runs, but I really don't think his physical tools are as impressive as Gomez's, to be honest.
  7. When the PTBNL is a later pick from a shortlist of options, it's usually just low-level prospects or minor league fliers. The reason they structure it as a PTBNL is because the team's scouts need to scour mediocre players, not known prospects. Jon Heyman reported that the PTBNL here is "fairly significant." Meadows is wishful thinking on my part, but the Mets were demanding fairly good pitching prospects just a few weeks ago, so unless they completely gave up the PTBNL will likely be a decent prospect. I personally wouldn't have given up Williams, but I don't think a Davis-for-Williams trade would have been shocking or unexpected.
  8. A player cannot be traded until a year after he was drafted, I highly doubt it's one of their 1st round draft picks from last year. If it's a pitcher I'd think it would someone like Adrian Sampson Pittsburgh's #27 prospect or an up-and-comer like Orlando Castro. Isn't that precisely why they had to structure it as a PTBNL? If it's a non-recent-draftee then they would have just named the player. I think people are upset not because they think Ike Davis is Joey Votto, but because he is clearly a more exciting option than Overbay and it appears he could have been acquired for virtually nothing. That may change when we hear the rest of the trade. (PS - Hunter Morris couldn't even hit 25 HR in AAA last season, he's not going to hit 25 HR in the majors...)
  9. Here's a crazy idea that will never happen: reports are that Manny Ramirez is looking for an MLB comeback. Would you sign him as a replacement for Overbay? His last prolonged stint in the majors (2010) he still hit .298/.409/.460, and though he has never played 1B before I'm sure he could be passable. You could let Reynolds start against LHP and favorable RHP-match-ups, and use Manny as a semi-regular platoon partner and bench bat. Plus it would instantly take the media and opposing-fan spotlight off of Braun. I think it would be awesome. (Yes I am aware that he is 42. But hey, David Ortiz is still hitting well. We're talking about one of the greatest hitters of all time here.)
  10. Mark Reynolds, Gold Glover!! *Edit* lol, didn't realize he caught that barehanded.
  11. Should have been a double play, Mark, but ok. At least he got the out.
  12. Braun and A-Ram are up, what are you doing? Ugh...
  13. According to Heyman, the PTBNL is "fairly significant." In order to be included as a PTBNL, I'm assuming it's either a 2013 draft pick or somebody on the DL, right? Here's hoping it's Austin Meadows (Pirates' 1st round pick)
  14. Ouch... Brewers couldn't beat that? Thornton looks like a mediocre RP prospect. *Edit* Pirates didn't even protect him for the last Rule 5 draft. Unless the PTBNL is a recent top draft pick by the Pirates, then I'm pretty upset the Brewers missed out on this.
  15. I am quite baffled that there are Brewers fans who think that Eugenio Velez, who hit .000/.075/.000 during his last stint in the majors (40 PA), is a better option than Rickie Weeks. Did Weeks run over your dog or something? The day I see Eugenio Velez make a start at first base (?!?!) is the day I renounce my baseball fandom, sell all my possessions, and move to a mountain somewhere to become a hermit.
  16. Yeah, Melvin really is not taking advantage of that pitching-prospect tree he planted behind Miller Park. What's the deal? Or maybe he could try acquiring an interesting young arm with upside (for free) by hiding him in the boring-but-necessary mop-up role on the team, rather than giving that spot to a random, mediocre veteran who has "earned it"...
  17. 2015 Free Agents (1B) Yuniesky Betancourt (33) Billy Butler (29) - $12.5MM club option with a $1MM buyout Michael Cuddyer (36) Corey Hart (33) Adam LaRoche (35) - $15MM mutual option with a $2MM buyout Adam Lind (31) - $7.5MM club option with a $1MM buyout Mike Morse (33) Carlos Pena (37) Ty Wigginton (37) Kevin Youkilis (36) If we assume that the guys with options do not hit the market, are any of these options very appealing? Cuddyer is good but is entering his late-30s, it remains to be seen how much of a disaster post-knee-surgery Hart will be, and Morse was atrocious last season. Considering the fact that Hunter Morris stinks, we are still going to have a big hole at 1B going into next season as well. Singing Morales on a super cheap, team-friendly deal this season (preferably post-draft) could solve things going forward too. If he signs in June for a cheap 2-3 year deal, I think that would be a brilliant move by Melvin.
  18. Got to have an excuse in order to cut him loose in favor of some grizzled veteran with zero upside and zero future.
  19. Runnin' Ron now literally running in and out of the dugout during the game.
  20. Well, hard to argue with that reasoning. I fail to see how 399 PA last season is definitive proof that he has somehow lost the ability to play baseball when weighed against the 4000+ PA over the rest of his career. Did he get old and lose all hitting ability overnight? He may be on the decline, but that's clearly not the entire explanation. In the month of June last season he destroyed the baseball and was the best player on the team, hitting .355/.429/.677 for a .472 wOBA. He was dreadful during the rest of the season, but his June alone is enough proof that he hasn't simply lost all of his physical tools. I don't know why he was so bad in May/July last season, but I do know that I haven't seen enough to defy all logic and conclude that he should be released. It does seem that having to share time with Gennett (both last season and this year) does not help his performance. If Gennett can turn things around, then that's fantastic. Fingers crossed. But if Scooter continues to hit like he currently is, I suspect we will be seeing a lot more of Weeks a month or two from now (and perhaps when people on this board get tired enough of Gennett their attitude on Weeks will suddenly change again too).
  21. What? From 2010-2011, Weeks was arguably the best 2B in the National League. In 2012 he wasn't elite but was still clearly one of the top 10 offensive 2B in baseball (.728 OPS, .321 wOBA). His only objectively bad season (aside from his cold start as a spot-starter/pinch-hitter this season) was last year, and that was only in 399 PA. And by comparison his "bad" 2013 was still better than Gennett has been performing this season. I would love nothing more than for Gennett to show he is the real deal and replicate his impressive 2013 campaign, but right now he is barely hitting and virtually every statistical projection suggests that Weeks will be the better player. As I said before, giving Scooter some time to show what he can do is a fine plan (as is trading Weeks for a valuable return that would benefit the team), but I don't see how releasing Weeks makes any sense whatsoever (particularly when Overbay is still claiming a 25-man spot).
  22. What's the difference between saying we should cut Weeks in favor of Gennett and saying we should have cut Gallardo last season in favor of Fiers? (other than the benefit of hindsight in the latter case) I'm fine with giving Scooter some extended time to show he isn't a fluke, but Weeks has a lot of value as a safeguard with more upside/bounce-back potential than many are giving him. I would be fine with trading Weeks if we get a solid return (for example, using Weeks as the centerpiece for acquiring Adam Lind). But simply releasing him when we are already on the hook for his salary is bonkers.
