  1. Setting aside the fact that Gamel is no longer in the Brewers organization, Gamel cannot hit MLB pitching. Never has and likely never will. Colvin at least has some measure of success in his past.
  2. I have a hard time considering Morris a legitimate prospect anymore, and I don't think the front office really does either. Maybe that's harsh, but when you are limited to 1B defensively you really have a huge burden to consistently perform offensively. Putting up a .766 OPS season at AAA with a 122/43 K/BB ratio is just not going to cut it. And it's not like he's 21 years old. If they are punting on the season then sure, call him up and see what you've got (though in that case you also have to start trading players like Gomez for maximum return). But I don't think the team would have to do all that much to be competitive in 2014. A boring-but-competent stopgap at 1B could be all they need. Rolling the dice with non-prospects and AAAA players is closer to just giving up on the season.
  3. I don't think Young is some elite player anymore, but I also don't understand why people are assuming someone like Sean Halton can be expected to put up comparable numbers. Setting aside the fact that AAAA players who do well in the minors but can't hit major league pitching are a dime a dozen, Halton wasn't even that good in the minors. .809 OPS last season at AAA is not all that impressive. If the Brewers FO and talent evaluators thought Halton or Morris were competent major leaguers, then we wouldn't be talking about Michael Young right now.
  4. To be fair, that WAR is a reflection of teams still thinking he can play 3B (and even giving him innings at SS -- ?!?!). Offensively he was not that bad, comparatively speaking, and probably would be a better defender at 1B.
  5. When I first saw this I had a negative reaction, but investigating it further Young might actually be a solid signing. He was horrible in 2012 but rebounded somewhat last year with a .320 wOBA, which is better than the projections for many of the options we've been discussing. More importantly, in his career he actually hits LHP better than RHP so he would be good in a platoon. The real liability his is defense, which has been horrendous at 3B, but maybe he wouldn't be so bad at 1B.
  6. A tale of two identically-aged players, a.k.a. the difference two seasons can make: 2009-2011, fWAR per 150 G #5. Rickie Weeks, 5.0 #6. Robinson Cano, 4.9 2014: Robinson Cano: $240,000,000 Rickie Weeks: Debate by Brewers fans over whether he should even serve in a platoon
  7. The negative defensive WAR you are talking about is mostly a position adjustment for him playing DH. His career defensive numbers at 1B (either UZR or TotalZone) actually suggest he is an above-average defender there. I don't know where his reputation as a DH-only comes from, unless teams just think he's not durable enough to play in the field everyday. My thoughts on Morales are mixed. On the one hand, I hate to give up yet another draft pick given the empty farm system. On the other hand, draft picks have a certain value that I'm sure the front office can monetize. If the compensation issue drops the contract it will take to sign Morales, at a certain point the signing team comes out ahead (the reduction in contract price outweighs the value of the draft pick). He'd certainly be the best hitter we have a realistic chance of getting.
  8. Can someone explain Ike Davis's splits? 2012, 1st Half: .201/.271/.388/.659 (295 PA) 2012, 2nd Half: .255/.346/.542/.888 (289 PA) 2013, 1st Half: .165/.255/.250/.505 (239 PA) 2013, 2nd Half: .286/.449/.505/.954 (138 PA) My "research" suggests that his 2011 campaign was derailed early by an ankle injury, and that he then was beset by a fungal infection/Valley Fever (?!) for the first part of 2012, which likely affected his production as seen above. Does anyone know if there's an explanation for his 2013 first half? Because splits that are that severe do not suggest mere chance. If there is any plausible explanation for why he was so bad to start 2013, then I am baffled as to why the Mets want to trade him. When he's been fully healthy he has been a stud hitter.
  9. I haven't watched him personally, but Butler's reputation is as a DH-only. I don't think many GMs would take him as their everyday 1B, especially since Melvin evidently wants a decent defender there next season.
  10. Weeks had one bad season. Before that he was a very solid 2B and not that long ago looked like one of the top 2B in baseball. I think you're giving up on him too soon. If I were running things I would make Weeks the starter and Gennett the back-up, but since it seems they're doing it the other way around they at least need to keep Weeks as a backup. I have high hopes for Gennett, but you don't make a young guy with an extremely mixed track record your everyday starter with no backup unless he is an elite prospect (like top-20 in baseball, and maybe not even then) and Gennett has never even been the top prospect inside the mediocre Milwaukee farm system.
  11. Now that Tampa Bay has Loney for 3 years, that probably precludes them from taking a 1B/DH in any Price trade with Seattle. Might make someone like Smoak available for the Brewers. (I can't decide if I'd rather have Davis or Smoak. Probably the latter).
  12. Among 41 qualifying 1B over the past three season, Loney is ranked #36 in wOBA, #37 in walk percentage, and #38 in isolated power. He stinks. An empty-average 1B who can't walk or hit for power. Granted, he's still a huge upgrade over the horror show we had last season, but I'm fine not spending $20+M on a bad player.
  13. Yeah, there is no way they trade Rickie. Aside from the huge sell-low issue, Gennett is completely unproven and if he falters who is the backup? It would be like if they traded Gallardo last off-season to make room for Fiers as the new ace after his dominant debut. (Well, trading Gallardo might actually have been a good move, but you get my point...)
  14. Some perspective on Ike Davis: Yeah, he sucked last season, but he is only one year older than Hunter Morris, has had some success in MLB, and a few years ago was ranked as a top-75 prospect in baseball. Meanwhile, Hunter Morris is only one year younger, sucked at AAA last season, and has never been considered a top prospect beyond the Brewers organization. Just food for thought.
  15. What does in-house entail? Because Francisco is one of few players (only player?) in baseball who strikes out more Reynolds. The difference being he doesn't have any of the upside.
  16. Haven't heard much about Mark Reynolds -- is there a reason, other than his inability to play defense*? * - Compared to normal players, not compared to Yuni B/Juan Francisco
  17. Serious question: What if they just move Rickie Weeks to 1B? Assuming he rebounds to his career levels he is much better offensively than any of the options we're discussing, and obviously athletic enough that I wouldn't think defense would be a major issue. I know he's allegedly resisted position changes in the past, but this time it would be guaranteeing him lost playing time. (Will never happen, of course)
  18. Loney and Francisco are the same player: Oliver projections Loney: .277/.330/.397 wRC+99 Francisco: .242/.302/.459 wRC+106 Loney's only good year (last year) was all BABIP driven. Francisco's problem is he is incapable of hitting LHP, so I am guessing his Oliver projection is skewed by the fact that in his career he's primarily been used against RHP only. I don't think he's an everyday option.
  19. 2013 Offense from some of the remaining options: James Loney: .339 wOBA Justin Smoak: .331 wOBA Mitch Moreland: .320 wOBA Ike Davis: .297 wOBA Personally, I want Smoak out of that group if he is cheap enough. But maybe the Mariners are planning to use him in another trade (e.g. to Tampa Bay)
  20. [sarcasm]Yuni B is still out there.[/sarcasm]
  21. Apparently Seattle has traded for Logan Morrison? How many 1B do they need? Ike Davis or James Loney is a sad choice indeed.
  22. Maybe they can convince him there's something about the magic of the Midwest that made him so dominant in Minnesota.
  23. Via Bob Nightingale on Twitter, Brewers offered roughly $8million with incentives. Considering Hart was only worth $9.9million when healthy in 2012 (and is obviously a massive risk going into 2014), I'm fine with not going higher.
  24. Hart signing with Seattle, per Heyman on Twitter. Somebody get Tyler Thornburg in protective custody, stat!
  25. Thank goodness. Thornburg for Ike Davis would have been depressing.
