  1. Purely hypothetical because I haven't seen them linked to Greinke, but Cleveland is in the thick of the AL Central division race despite horrible starting pitching. They were willing to make a big trade for Jimenez last season, is it possible they would give up Francisco Lindor for a Greinke rental?
  2. The Brewers currently have the third best offense in the NL, and that will be mostly intact next season (even better if they can upgrade at SS). So it's not like the pitching has been incredible this season and there will be a huge drop-off next year even without Greinke/Marcum. If they can jettison Randy Wolf and fix the bullpen, an average rotation plus the Brewers offense is still competitive.
  3. I think Ryan Braun is just a tad better than Aramis Ramirez.
  4. What good is a top-notch arm and strikeouts if you can't get the ERA down? I'm not anti-sabermetrics in the least, but if I'm making a decision worth hundreds of millions of dollars, I'm paying a guy based on results.
  5. Yes, but I'm not convinced other teams will be jumping over each other to give Greinke $20+/year. There's no reason to unless you really, really trust xFIP over ERA.
  6. I'm in favor if trading A-Ram because I think the Brewers can fill 3B from within (i.e. Taylor Green), whereas there are huge black holes at SS, SP, in the bullpen, and potentially at 1B (though Aoki in RF/Hart in 1B seems solid to me). The Brewers can use that money better in 2013 rather than spending it on an aging 3B, even if his production is adequate.
  7. I don't understand baseball; are advanced metrics really that highly valued by front offices? Because based on his ERA/WHIP, Greinke only has one great season (2009). He doesn't have the same surface numbers as Santana/Sabathia or even Cain, so you have to really trust FIP/xFIP/WAR I guess to think the Cain contract is automatically the starting point (particularly since his free agency value will take a hit from Hamels potentially being on the market). Don't get me wrong, I like advanced metrics and think Greinke is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but I find it weird that there is such a consensus on his value being so high. (Won't even mention the absurd can-only-pitch-in-tiny-hamlets-like-Milwaukee amateur psychology.) I think 5/$100 is very realistic and by no means a low-ball from the Brewers. ERA/WHIP the three years before their big contracts: Matt Cain: 2.89/1.180, 3.14/1.080, 2.88/1.080 Johan Santana: 2.87/0.970, 2.77/1.000, 3.33/1.070 CC Sabathia: 3.22/1.170, 3.21/1.140, 2.70/1.100 Zack Greinke?: 4.17/1.250, 3.83/1.200, 3.32/1.230 (2012)
  8. A-Ram's contract isn't ridiculously bad, but it's a contract the Brewers don't need. I would be happy to make a salary relief trade and just get something minor in return. Do the Dodgers have any young back-of-the-rotation types that could pitch in 2013 but aren't really high-upside prospects?
  9. Agreed. Can't just forget about Rogers/Peralta either. The system can fill a rotation next year, so there's no need to take a lesser offer just for a 2013 contributor. I'm more worried that Melvin will try to avoid the extremely weak SS free agent market and ask for some crappy utility guy as part of the deal (Robert Andino or somebody)
  10. I'm not suggesting that Melvin & Co. make a deal based on reading the BA rankings in their offices. Obviously, they need to send the Brewers professional scouting staff to watch whatever players are in consideration and only make a deal if they like what they see. I am only using BA rankings as a rough proxy for actual talent, because they are the closest we (non-professional scouts on the Internet) can get.
  11. Wasn't watching, did Braun and Fielder do their elaborate handshake as Braun was passing 1B for his double?
  12. I think that return would be great. Maybe they could reach for Kaleb Cowart (3B) instead of Cron (1B/DH), given Hunter Morris's strong performance?
  13. I don't want the Orioles scraps for Greinke. Either they part with Machado, who won't be ready until 2014 best case, or they will have to go to Plan B. I could care less what Baseball America thought of a guy when they were putting together a list. I've watched both Matusz and Britton pitch, and both are pretty much garbage- especially Matusz. Don't know much about the other guys, but like I said, I'm not taking scraps. Machado is not a realistic return, particularly with other decent pitching available. The package I listed would be a very nice return, if anything it is too optimistic, certainly not "scraps."
  14. Poor man's Travis Ishikawa... ...
  15. Absolutely... You build a small central core and then when you see an opportunity to go for it (e.g. 2008, 2011) you trade away prospects for impact players. I was only referring to people second-guessing Melvin for ever having traded for Greinke, not people who want to trade Hart or Greinke now.
  16. Angels rotation has been worse than expected. I wonder if Texas manages to land Hamels, it could make Los Angeles a new suitor for a Greinke trade? They have a very tradeable SS prospect (Jean Segura) and a pitching prospect with upside who isn't performing this year but who could contribute in 2013 (Garrett Richards). Maybe Greinke for those two plus another of the Angels BA top 10?
  17. They had another year of Fielder after 2010 though (which ended up getting us into the playoffs with a team that should have gone to the World Series, embarrassing postseason performance aside). Simply no reason to keep Greinke if there is no extension and Melvin is getting decent offers. Also, I'm not sure why people are looking at 20/20 hindsight rosters and blaming Melvin for doing something wrong by making trades that got us two postseasons. That's like saying he's an idiot for not drafting Albert Pujols in the later rounds. Where is Matt LaPorta on this hypothetical roster? (exactly) Hart is signed through 2013. Most posters here are not looking at things in hindsight. Most of these opinions were the same as they were at the time of the trades. I know Crew07 has been against trading prospects for years. Ok, I am dumb. I was thinking Greinke not Hart The other point remains though. You can't talk about how trading prospects is always a bad idea and then ignore the fact that we got Sabathia, one of the greatest half seasons from a pitcher of all time, and a playoff run primarily for a player that is currently valueless. The goal is to get the playoffs, and Melvin has accomplished that at a very high rate (relatively speaking). I think the extreme pro-prospect position is a lottery mentality; you are perpetually waiting for an entirely home-grown core that is competitive year-after-year, and which is never going to materialize.

  19. Braun/Upton/Chorizo sausage would be best OF in all of baseball.
  20. Orioles package that makes sense to me: LHP, Zach Britton (BA #28 overall, pre-2011) SS/2B, Jonathan Schoop (BA #82 overall, pre-2012) LHP, Brian Matusz (BA #5 overall, pre-2010; has been horrendous, but could fill back of rotation with upside still) 1B/3B, Nicky Delmonico (got first-round money in 2011 draft; potential middle of the order bat) To me that would be a very solid yet realistic haul. You get two very solid positional prospects to fill a system that is currently too pitching heavy, and you get two young pitchers that can slot into the rotation in 2013 (particularly important giving impending departure of Greinke/Marcum/Wolf) but who actually have prospect upside still, particularly Britton (who knows, maybe they can fix Matusz).
  21. Good lord. I saw the box score with Greinke being removed after 0.0 IP and almost had a heart attack. Would have been just the Brewers' luck that our biggest trading chip in years would get injured a couple weeks before the deadline.
  22. Not even close. More realistic deal would be Gallardo for Upton.
  23. I can imagine a world where half-season Greinke gets one of Bundy/Machado; GMs can be very unpredictable and I'm often surprised by the returns that pitching can sometimes get in a trade (also the possibility of a pre-trade extension agreement). But the Orioles are playing for what, the second wild card? I feel like that's not the scenario where you give up a top 10 prospect. An arms race between Texas and Los Angeles would be that kind of scenario.
  24. I don't know anything, but I really like these picks. Coulter sounds like he will stick at catcher and is willing to sign right away, and to my admittedly untrained eye Roache looks like a complete beast in the hitting footage I've seen. High risk, but I get the feeling that Roache could overshadow a lot of the other players in the draft in a few years. Haniger also sounds good. Seid's quotes were extremely praiseworthy (seemingly more so than normal). *Edit* - But how does Coulter have such amazing power when I think it said he only hit 3 HR in high school this season? What were those stats from???
