  1. Wow, I'm surprised they gave up on him. Seems like a sell-low to me and sounds like they got very little in return; weird given the demand for catchers out there. So basically, the Brewers got more for George Kottaras than the Cubs got for All-Star Geovany Soto? Go Doug!
  2. I bet moving to the NL Central would do Masterson wonders. Could be a very nice #3/#4 for our rotation. Would the Indians really want Hart though? The main rumor coming out of there is that they are trying to trade away an OF (Choo), not add one.
  3. Does anyone know if NBC makes event replays available online and I'm just missing it? Because as far as I can tell they don't let you watch half the events (it seems like they only have highlights/replays for events that the U.S. won...) I hate NBC.
  4. Lee is aging and has been fairly mediocre this year. Can't believe people on Twitter suggesting that it would cost top prospects to take on that contract.
  5. I think they really need to make a push for either Edwin Jackson or Anibal Sanchez. Maybe Grant Balfour for the CL/SU role (depending on how Axford can recover). Otherwise I'd prefer not to spend on relief.
  6. Sweet. I had already planned on referring to him as "Jean Jean, the Dancing Machine". Ozzie Smith was "The Wizard," Jean Segura is... "The Genie" Also, I'm glad Melvin didn't bite with Buckel/Grimm/+. Current rumors are that Texas might offer Grimm for Jonathan Broxton. I'd be very wary of a guy it seems they are trying to unload in every deal.
  7. The bullpen sucks, that's not the coach's fault. I'd keep Kranitz for the simple reason of not messing with the Fiers Train.
  8. I actually believe Hellweg will make it as a starter. He's actually done better as a starter than a reliever, and he has smooth mechanics to pair with his upper-90s fastball. Also, from what I'm reading, his change up seems to be usable. He also has an above average slider to round out his arsenal, so there's that. I think he has a chance to be a good #2 starter. Don't forget his curveball, rated Best Curveball in the Angels organization by BA pre-2012.
  9. Wow, solid return for Kottaras (I was expecting cash considerations or something). BA #60 overall pre-2008, but it sounds like he had Tommy John surgery and has been trying to reestablish himself since. Fangraphs had him #7 in the Athletics organization pre-2011: John Sickels had him #5 pre-2011: Here's a write-up from John Sickels from last year: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011/5/25/2189534/prospect-of-the-day-fautino-de-los-santos-rhp-oakland-athletics And Baseball America gave him Best Fastball in the organization pre-2011 (and projected 2015 closer pre-2012).
  10. Reportedly, no. It's unfortunate, but I agree with you... he's looking more & more like a big-league bat. I don't see how a player can play LF, but doesn't have the skills to play RF. Maybe his arm makes him a slightly worse defender (relative to MLB average) in RF, but clearly his main tool is the bat anyways so who cares about defense. Corey Hart is a below-average RF too.
  11. DKnobler ‏@DKnobler Brewers have had some inquiries about Manny Parra, but they may keep him. May try him as a starter again.
  12. Great news. Who cares what we get back, anything > nothing.
  13. Mine would be: 1) Jean Segura (SS) 2) Tyler Thornburg (SP) 3) Taylor Jungmann (SP) 4) Wily Peralta (SP) 5) Jimmy Nelson (SP) 6) Jed Bradley (SP) 7) Johnny Hellweg (SP) 8) Victor Roache (OF) 9) Hunter Morris (1B) 10) Khris Davis (OF) I don't know how to rank Mark Rogers, he is a mystery.
  14. If Fiers's season ended today, there would only be two SP (100% GS) in the modern era with lower FIPs in their rookie seasons (Stephen Strasburg and Dwight Gooden). Nobody has had as good of an ERA/FIP combo (of rookie SP in the modern era with an ERA below 2.00, he has the lowest FIP). Of course, he only has 65.0 IP so far, but still interesting.
  15. Wow, there are some uninformed comments in there. What did those people expect the Brewers to get for Greinke, Jurrickson Profar? Melvin got the best SS/2B prospect realistically available, and two high-upside pitches to boot. Nobody living in reality could find that return underwhelming for 10 starts with no compensation picks.
  16. Brewers scouts traded for a SS and they are playing him at SS for the time being. Angels development specifically moved him to SS (even though they already have Aybar at the MLB level). I see zero reason to conclude that he will need to move. I'm not even sure how BA could conclude coming into the season that he won't stick there, when this his is first season trying the position. By all accounts he has an above-average arm and is very quick. Maybe he'll never have superstar range or hands, but it sounds like he has the tools to stick there -- you can't teach having a good arm, other things can be learned through experience.
  17. Holy hell, I hadn't checked Khris Davis's stats in a while. When is this guy going to be taken more seriously as a prospect? Aside from his 2011 stint at AA (maybe pushed a little too fast) he has improved at every level, which is exactly what you want to see. And that's improving from crushing the ball to destroying the ball.
  18. Also from Baseball America: Segura has a significantly higher offensive ceiling than Escobar, though he lacks the range and consistency to profile as more than an average defender at shortstop.
  19. fwiw, I haven't seen any reports saying his defense is actually bad at SS. Sounds more like an as-he-fills-out thing, which is at least better than him not having the talent to play SS, imo.
  20. I'm not a scout, but based on the 20HR/.290 AVG report earlier in this thread, and their minor league numbers, maybe upside of Jose Reyes? Of course that's the longshot, if he's merely average it's still a huge pickup.
  21. Per Ken Rosenthal, Brewers wanted Perez (weren't demanding Profar/Olt). Sounds like Texas was low-balling and now they got burned. Hope they lose the division and wildcard to LAA/OAK
  22. His 2012 numbers are slightly concerning, but Hellweg is my new favorite prospect. Here's hoping he turns into Randy Johnson Jr.
