  1. "Gives you an idea of where they are with their bullpen. A guy that's been twice released this year is coming in to pitch in the eighth inning with a one run lead". Nail. Head.
  2. Sigh. Marco Estrada, "what do I have to do to get a win??" Seriously, this entire bullpen needs to go. Hernandez, Loe, Veras, Parra, Rodriguez. None of these guys need to be on the roster next year. Axford is the only guy I'd keep, and his hold on a roster spot is tenuous.
  3. Brewer reliever comes in, and the other team immediately gets on base. Stop me if you've heard this one before....
  4. I agree, GormanHarvey. He's so much fun to watch. I'd give my left leg for a team full of guys that have his enthusiasm. Sometimes I feel like the team is mailing it in. I never get that feeling with Carlos Gomez. He gives you 100% every time he steps on the field. He's still young (will be 27 in December), and he's by far the most physically gifted athlete on the Brewers. If he's taken that next step, we're in for a treat. Dump Morgan imo, call up Logan Schafer, and we're set in center for a long time.
  5. Ok, I'm getting excited by Carlos Gomez. His play is much improved as of late. Has he finally made that big turn? Are we finally seeing him reaching his massive potential? He's hitting the long ball, he's getting clutch hits. And he's always playing at mach 3. Is GoGo movin' on up? Am I wrong, or just searching for something positive in an otherwise lost season??
  6. Roenicke...STOP BUNTING. Every time I turn on a Brewer game, somebody is bunting. Enough already. Once in a while is ok. You do it way too much.
  7. Thanks, JimH5 I was a political science major/pre law in college, only switching career paths to that of a stock broker after leaving the university. I could get addicted to political talk all over again, so I think I'm better off sticking to baseball! I like the mix of conversations on here. It's nice to just pop in and chat while the game is going on, look at some of the minor league discussions going on afterwords (which I really love as a baseball card collector that does a lot of prospecting)...then I can satiate my stat-nerd needs by getting into a discussion about oWAR, or babip, or win probability added, etc. I am a happy camper!
  8. Just give me Jarrod Parker, and the A's can have Ramirez
  9. I just cracked open the Saturday edition of the Dallas Morning News, and it's evident that spin control is now in full effect in the wake of Zack Greinke's signing with the Los Angeles Angels. News columnist Evan Grant had a piece where he states that the Rangers could have had Greinke if they were willing to part with Mike Olt, or Leonys Martin. But to paraphrase, "this isn't about avenging the Nelson Cruz missed fly ball, or the two World Series losses. This is about building a team that can win a championship every year, not one year". Without saying it directly, Grant applauds Daniel's stance, stating that Greinke would have been a 3 month rental. But then he switches gears altogether, and starts talking about the Miami Marlins, who according to Grant, are also highly interested in Olt. He goes on to make the case for Josh Johnson, a pitcher who, in Grant's words, "could be the ace the Rangers need." Johnson was "on his way to being an ace when he suffered an injury last season", but his most recent start makes him think that Johnson might be on his way back. Signing Johnson, per Grant, would "not only be about this year, but the future." Hoo boy. I know you guys don't live in the Dallas area, but I've got to tell you that this is par for the course. The Dallas sports media are some of the most obtuse sports journalists I've ever witnessed. Trading Greinke was the wrong move, but trading Mike Olt for Josh Johnson, who was limited to 4 starts in 2007, 14 starts in 2008, and 9 starts in 2011 due to injury...that's the "right move"? Sounds like spin control to me.
  10. Though I haven't been a member here for long, I just wanted to say what an absolute pleasure it has been discussing Brewers baseball with you all. This forum is everything I hoped it would be and more. I have found the posters here to be intelligent and mature, and the collective level of baseball knowledge is pretty much awe inspiring. Without getting into a lot of boring details, I've been on long term disability for the last few years because of my back. So getting to the ballpark is not really an option right now (those chairs are quite uncomfortable!). And since I have lived in Texas since 1989 (after being born and raised in Milwaukee and Waukesha, respectively), I find myself homesick. I enjoy the Rangers, but the Brewers have been my team since I was seven years old, and that will never change. Before coming here, I could get Brewer news, of course, but I couldn't really find anyplace with other passionate fans like myself to discuss that news with. And that was rough, as baseball is really my greatest passion. I tried several places, but as I'm sure many of you, too, have experienced, the discussions far too often devolved into childish arguments. So a big "thank you" to all the members of Brewerfan.net. I am looking forward to many years of stimulating discussions with you all. I tip my hat to you all! Bill
  11. The metrics thus far do not excite me. However, 98 miles per hour excites me plenty. After the injuries he's gone through, knowing he can run it up there to near triple digits again has me feeling optimistic.
  12. Wouldn't it be nice to have our own Aroldis Chapman coming out of the pen? Somebody that can throw with control, and just blow the ball bye you. A sometime closer, a sometime setup guy. I have a feeling Mark is going to surprise us.
  13. Star in the making. Mike just gets it.
  14. I'm excited that he's finally getting his shot. I'm pulling for him big time!!!! Just bought his rookie card to celebrate! http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/396/rogersj.png
  15. Remember, it's baseball-reference providing their data. I don't really like ESPN (though I strangely still go there. I guess ESPN is like eating peas as a kid. You never really learn to like them, but you still eat them because you've grown used to them), but in this one area, they are not really in the wrong.
  16. Thanks guys, I feel much better. I'd heard that WAR was calculated differently depending on where you went, but this just struck me as odd. I've never really delved into it before. I'm a stock broker and deal with numbers a lot, and things like this perplex me, and set off my ADD. It's amazing to me that there can be such wide variance in calculations from one source to another, but it's still universally called WAR. Thanks for the compliment, gregmag. I'm a longtime baseball nut, and started memorizing player stats when I was a little kid, long before metrics like babip, WAR, etc came into the baseball vernacular. FYI, when I went to ESPN's home run tracker, and looked up Josh Willingham, overlaying Miller Park on his tracked home runs, one of Willingham's home runs would have been an out....to Ryan Braun, of all people: http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4243/overlay1343349452210136.jpg
  17. Sorry if I'm a little punchy guys. I've been up all night, and vicodin for my back has me a bit doped up. I just don't see the two of them as being close really. Braun is a much better hitter, and I cannot buy into the notion that Josh Willingham would somehow be worth more wins, or in this case, a third of a win more than Braun. Braun is in the discussion for NL MVP. Is Willingham in the discussion for AL MVP? No way. Yet this idiotic metric would have us believe that Willingham is somehow more worthwhile than Braun.
  18. Willingham plays in the American League with the designated hitter, whereas Braun plays in a league where the pitcher bats. Willingham gets more opportunities to drive in runs. As far as the parks argument goes. Willingham away from Target Field: 169 AB's, 10 HR, 32 RBI, .237 AVG Braun away from Miller Park: 190 AB's, 12 HR, 27 RBI, .299 AVG And as far as Braun playing in a more hitter friendly park, that's an argument that diminishes Braun's power (not saying you're making it, I know that is standard reasoning). Based on ESPN's home run tracker, every one of Braun's 28 HR this year would have been out of Target Field: http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/9926/overlay1343319629145714.jpg If Braun were the type of hitter that could benefit from playing in a hitter's park, I could see this as part of the argument. But Braun doesn't get cheap home runs. This is a guy that hit two HR out of Target Field in one game. Willingham, playing half of his games there, has done that once. Braun hit three out of Petco. That's never been done before. Braun is going to hit the ball out of any park in the majors, and I really don't think his power numbers are gaining any discernible benefit from playing there. There's more to it than pure dimensions, I know, but I just can't see Brauny going to Target Field, and seeing a massive drop in his power numbers.
  19. 2012 offensive WAR to date. I was browsing ESPN, and saw the baseball page has WAR leaders listed. I saw Willingham in the top 10. I didn't see Braun. oWAR does not take into consideration defense at all, and Braun and Willingham both play left field. Braun's oWAR is 3.4 Willingham's oWAR is 3.7 Huh? Willingham is batting .271. Braun is batting .318 Willingham has 25 HR. Braun has 28. Willingham has scored 57 runs, Braun has scored 65. Willingham has 71 RBI. Braun has 69. Willingham has 2 SB. Braun has 17. Willingham has 52 BB and 88 K's. Braun has 40 BB and 76 K's. Willingham's OBP is .384. Braun's is .400. Willingham's OPS is .947. Braun's is 1.019. Braun has 3 less RBI and 12 fewer walks. Braun is batting 47 points higher, has 3 more home runs, has 8 more runs scored, 15 more stolen bases, his OBP is 16 points higher, and his OPS is 72 points higher. Take this a step further. Willingham is 14th in MLB in total bases. Braun is 4th. Willingham's isolated power is .292, 6th best in MLB. Braun? His isolated power is .301, third best in the majors. Runs created per 27 outs? Willingham's at 7.38, 21st in MLB. Braun? 6th in MLB at 8.78. Runs created? Willingham is 13th at 71. Braun? 2nd in MLB at 82.3, trailing only Andrew McCutchen at 87.7. Could somebody PLEASE explain to me how Willingham could possibly have a higher offensive WAR than Braun? This is why I don't put a lot of faith in WAR.
  20. Han Ram would have looked really good at shortstop, and in front of Braun in the lineup. Too bad we don't have a pitcher that we could have traded to the Marlins.
  21. Wouldn't it be funny if Fiers turned out to be out best pitcher? All this talk about Peralta, Jungmann, Thornburg and Bradley being the future of our rotation, and we may have a guy already up with the team that could be in their class. Mark Rogers had the kind of stuff that teams drool about, yet he could never stay healthy long enough with that stuff. Greg Maddux never had overpowering stuff, yet he was constantly keeping hitters guessing. Now, I'm not saying that Fiers is going to be another Maddux, but where is it written that you have to throw 95 to be a great pitcher? RA Dickey is one of the best in the majors right now, and he does it with control. Ya, it's a knuckle ball, and nobody else throws it, but he's able to dominate without overpowering hitters. Fiers keeps batters off guard. He does a great job of mixing his pitches up. If you read the article linked earlier in this thread, his delivery makes it almost impossible for hitters to anticipate what kind of pitch is coming. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fiers ends up being a 15 win a season pitcher. That would be great for us.
  22. If Zack doesn't take this, bye bye, here's the door. Thanks for the two years. Trade him to Texas for Mike Olt and Luis Sardinas. Maybe we get lucky, and snag Olt and Elvis Andrus knowing that Profar is ready. There's your left side of the infield for the next decade plus.
