  1. I took Stearns’ comment as a veiled reference to agents when he pointed out that some possible moves are exaggerated in the media.
  2. I’d be shocked if Cleveland ever traded McKenzie. That’s a cautionary tale on how you have to find your own McKenzie in the draft or international signing. And once you’ve got him, forget about moving him.
  3. I agree completely. I’d bet we are around 3 for $70 M. That wouldn’t be the end of the world either way. Guys that age try to squeeze out that extra year. It’s not collusion to not buy into that. There are plenty of examples of guys who fade and that last year becomes unpalatable. I’d imagine we wouldn’t do 4 and say $92.5.
  4. The Cubs are damn smart. I keep hoping they do something stupid and they just do not bite. That’s an absurd contract. Get ready for the Wade Davis decline. The Cubs will not regret this move in the final analysis. Epstein rarely does.
  5. Pass on giving up that haul. This isn’t Zach Grienke at 26. I’m glad Stearns is driving a hard bargain. You’re not suddenly a serious contender even with those three. I might be convinced if I can swap Corey Ray for Harrison. If they don’t like it, pound sand. Recognizing where we are as an organization is important. We aren’t ready this year and won’t be. I think Stearns gets the timing aspect.
  6. We used to be like that. We’d look at other teams’ prospects and start drooling over their prospects with fantasy proposals. You know we have a number of prospects who are appealing. It’s nice to have a talent-rich farm.
  7. Anybody got a scouting report on him?
  8. Great resources, thanks. I have seen Will Banfield mocked to Milwaukee somewhere. That sounds terrific. Sounds like a legit catcher with the potential to hit. Good catching is very hard to find. We have some decent prospects, but I'd jump on an impact catcher if possible.
  9. I would not trade Harrison. We cannot even see his ceiling yet. I had him rated as my sixth prospect when we put together our cumulative rankings. That may have seemed aggressive until we saw that Fangraphs had him at three. One interesting thing about the winter meetings is you can get a sense of how other ballclubs see your players. You can gather information that way. Stearns has a good sense of Harrison’s value if lots of teams are inquiring about Harrison as I suspect. If things come together, an outfield of Harrison, Brinson and Phillips, with Lutz coming up next, could be devastating. I’m not giving that possibility up for Danny Duffy. That’s the type of thing you could look back on in five or six years and just skewer the organization over. I hope we know better.
  10. By mid season how about this: Nelson Davies Anderson Woodruff Burnes In other words, I don’t think Burnes is that far away. You’d have to get through the first three months with the likes of Jungmann, Suter, and Yo for some starts. Then in 2019 hopefully Ortiz is in the mix. It’s grinding along.
  11. I feel like I’m in a time warp. I sure hope it’s for infinitesimal dollars.
  12. He’s a good athlete and promising. Right now, he’s a singles hitter and needs a bit more pop. If he gains more strength, he can find some more gaps and get some XBH. I’d want to see that before I turned over a starting role. I think he can end up a very valuable utility guy in a couple of years, where you’d see Hiura or even Diaz at second. If, for example, Arcia went on the DL, it’d be nice to have Dubon available. This team is developing nicely into a potentially talented and deep team if people don’t get too antsy and stay patient. Hopefully, we stay the course and let the controllable talent coalesce.
  13. Things are fluid. My recollection is that Stearns started discussions with Arizona at the winter meetings on the Segura trade for Chase and Isan. But, the deal didn’t get finalized until January. As we stand now, I like holding out for lofty value back. When the time is right, Stearns may turn into the decisive guy like Epstein is now. If I had to guess, I’d think we are in on some pitcher trades like Duffy but we have limits on what we are giving up. With our low salary obligations and sheer volume of quality prospects, if Stearns felt like it, he could be buying and trading like a mad man. I’m glad he’s not so shortsighted. He’s in it for the long game.
  14. Lol, the Cardinal sanctimony is always comic gold. They make it so easy to laugh at them.
  15. That sucks to be a Marlins fan. The Fernandez death was tragic. Now, they dismantled a stellar outfield. They had a nice core coming together and in the span of a year or two, it came apart at the seams. I really liked their position players.
  16. Personally, I wouldn't give up that much for him. Peralta alone has pretty good value in my mind. Not all prospects make it, but if you start trading it off for middling talent, you don't know that you just traded away a star and kept the wrong guy.
  17. I am aligned with what Stearns is doing. I don't want to make panic moves. Stay the course. Speaking only for myself, I'd rather see how our young players develop rather than trade them away and suffer as they erupt elsewhere. The Cubs were patient for five years. And it worked. Once they saw their pieces come together, they have made shrewd moves to round it out. We are not at the same stage. To the contrary, if we would have traded Hader as some wanted, I wouldn't have been happy. I see him as a weapon. For all we know, an outfield of Brinson, Phillips and Harrison may be better than what the Marlins just dismantled, except that we can flourish with our group. If a long term pitcher with controllability and youth sprung available in a realistic trade, then you may have to trade from strength. I'd be open to that, but we have to wait for the right timing on that. I'm taking the opposite view of many, and do not want to us to trade off key farm pieces. Not right now.
  18. I’d also like us to hop on some top young international catchers. They are tough to find anywhere as it is. We have a few nice catching prospects but we could use more high level talent there.
  19. Morrow was very good last year and he’s got good stuff. But, that’s an aggressive move all things considered (age, arm past). Theo does his background work and then is very decisive.
  20. I could see the Braves making a strong inquiry too. General manager Alex Anthopoulos is very aggressive and he had some pop in Toronto.
  21. I think Ponce becomes a nice 6th or 7th inning reliever and depth in starting pitching at a minimum. I think he's a major leaguer. I like Dee but it's too many years on a contract when we have Hiura and Isan coming. I bet we get Ian Kinsler or re-up with Neal Walker.
  22. Supposedly the Yankees are all over Cobb. Bidding war would be fatal. I wish we could draft our own TOR's.
  23. I think Henson would have to be part of the deal. After that, to me it is either Brodgon or Middleton. If we lose them both, our depth will be nil. We need one to stay. I am guessing Middleton has more value. I have to say his effort defensively is not consistent. There are moments where it is downright inexcusable. Plus, with his salary, I would be ok with Middleton and Henson for Jordan, if Jordan extends. Brogdon can't score like Middleton but he can defend and does the little things that help you win. I think we'd take a step back kind of like we did when we let Jared Dudley leave. Regardless, no way would I include both Middleton AND Brogdon. Working out the salaries with Parker needing to be re-upped and Jordan could be dicey. Subtracting Henson and Middleton might help make it work.
  24. Bummer. Chatwood was my first choice for starting pitcher acquisition. Regardless, I hope we don't make any panic moves. Stay the course.
  25. Kohler’s American Club is probably an hour away as I recall. A lot of people like it. If you go there, though, you ought to stay at the main hotel building as it’s the nicer one. https://www.americanclubresort.com/lodging/the-american-club Another thing to consider: pick three hotels and move around to absorb different experiences. We’ve done that. While it’s a slight pain to pack up again, the overall experience is more diverse in a good way.
