  1. I get folks being down on Thames, but I think he's more than a platoon player. I know he's on the wrong side of the aging curve, but the dude can walk. 74 of them this year, to go with a .358 OBP. Plate discipline is a big part of his issue. He knows this and has mentioned it to Fangraphs. If the guy gets a little better at swinging at strikes, we're looking at a really good 1B presence for two more years. Obviously, that's a big IF, but if Aguilar brings value, I might be willing to explore that. Of course, a platoon works and could give the team a big advantage, so that's fine as an option, but I don't want to give up on Thames in any way. I see promise beyond his hot April, is what I mean.
  2. Thought we could start a little retrospective on some of the great wins the Brewers pulled out this year. I have three personal favorites, other than the obvious Shaw walk-off. 1) Mother's Day. May have been the most fun day of the season for me. I was perfectly happy with taking 2 of 3 vs. the Mets, and then they go down 6-1 and you figure, okay, good series, nobody get hurt. Then they start to chip away, and Pina hits an intense homer to give them the lead. They complete the comeback and win. Just excellent. 2) Game 4 vs. the D-Backs at Miller Park (May 28), only because I was there. I don't get to many games living out of town. Santana hits a grand slam and the Crew builds a build early lead. The D-Backs come back and scored 4 in the eighth, pinch-hit Goldschmidt as the tying run, and he hits a bullet of a lineout to Broxton in center. Brewers added one in the ninth and won 9-5. I hadn't seen a win in a couple of years, so that was pretty cool. 3) Jimmy's CG vs. the Padres. Really fun to watch a pitcher throw that kind of game.
  3. Well, on the bright side, the nerves of waiting for the inevitable end can stop. This was a really good year for this team, and maybe they have one comeback left. How about Phillips home run to put them back on top?
  4. Another soft contact hit. Need Swarzak to come up big. I'll echo the frustration with not being able to add on. Even one clutch hit, and I feel a lot better.
  5. BA talking like Swarzak is coming in. I'd stick with Hader, at least for Garcia.
  6. Actually his 58th big league hit... Oops. That one's just kind of silly and on me.
  7. Combination of bad luck (bloops hit in just the right place) and bad defense that inning. I think Shaw's play was the worst of the bunch. He's got time to set himself a little there (or just let it get to Arcia). Offense needs to get back at it. I never expected this to be a cruise game.
  8. Not pretty, but still alive! Also, any season where the Crew finishes ahead of the Cardinals is a good one. So, it's officially a good season.
  9. Wow. Surprised but understand. It is the top of the order. Also, the thought of my mental state after Drake comes in and immediately gives up two hits makes me almost grateful. I may regret that tomorrow, though.
  10. Maybe they make it easier and squeeze one across. Be nice to see a little rally to save a few bullets for tomorrow.
  11. Assuming it stays 4-1, do you save Knebel or fire him out there? I probably don't mess around. It's tempting with a 3-run lead, though.
  12. So, if the Dodgers lose, they'll only be a game up on the Indians going into tomorrow. It always seems like teams don't go all out for home field advantage, so who knows what that's worth to them, but I wonder what happens if there's a tie? My guess is it goes to the Dodgers since they won the head-to-head, right? What would happen if the teams never played in IL? Just curious...
  13. How great was that double play? And how great has Anderson been tonight? I know BA and Rock are paid to say it, but they're right. Just hang around and win your games, and if it's not good enough so be it. The least you can do is put some pressure on the other guys.
  14. I have hard time seeing the Brewers getting through this series without having to rely on someone other than Hader, Swarzak, Knebel, at least assuming the games remain meaningful. I think you just have to go day-by-day. All hands on deck tonight, which I think will mean Anderson for as much as he can get, Hader for as much as he can get, and Knebel for as much as he can get. Maybe Swarzak for one out, but only in an emergency. If Hader and Corey are unavailable tomorrow, so be it. I'm of the belief that anything within 3 runs either way has to be managed as a Game 7 type situation. A 4-run lead, you can play it differently and hope to sneak by, but that's where I'd draw the line.
  15. Oh man. A Brewers-Cleveland World Series would be worth it just for the constant references to Major League (I mean, not to mention the utter joy I would feel to have the Crew there in the first place, but the movie connection would add a cool angle to that particular matchup). If it happens, it really must do so with Ueck still kicking. Anything else would be a cosmic injustice.
  16. I was watching last night and was really surprised by the lack of urgency as well. The announcers kept seemingly reminding the viewers at home that the game mattered. It sure looked like it didn't. Especially those last three offensive innings against Tseng (sp?), where Maddon was like, "let's just see what this guy's got" and the Cards kept putting together bad/mediocre ABs. The last play got them juiced a little bit (deep fly ball to center that Leonys Martin made a Broxton-style grab on to preserve the win), but it seemed to come out of nowhere and then was over just as fast. Of course, that doesn't really mean anything for the upcoming series, but it did make me a little more appreciative of this Brewer bunch. They've shown a lot of resiliency and spirit this year, I think, even when it looked like they were ready to fade. That performance also seemed really atypical of the Cardinal teams I've seen. Usually, they've got as much fire as anyone (probably more), so I was pretty stunned to see them essentially playing out the string. I hope the lethargy continues into the weekend, but playing young guys might give them more energy, and maybe they get pumped about at least ruining the Brewers season. We'll see.
  17. It starts tonight! The right W-L combo, and things look a little better. Let's have one of those 9-run offensive performances (while Chase cruises through 7 scoreless!).
  18. I love Brett Phillips, especially these last few weeks. Even for a guy with a high K percentage, he does usually seem to put together good at bats. Plus, he's fun in the outfield and seems like a generally fun dude to be around. I am getting really pumped about the idea of watching him and Brinson patrol the outfield together for a while. What a great win today. 2 down with 3 to go. Maybe they do it, maybe they don't, but but I echo what someone else said. This is the third best Brewer team I've ever watched by record. Shout out to Jared Hughes who's been a really serviceable bullpen participant this year, I think.
  19. I don't even know about disappointed. Disappointed to be falling out of it, yes, but also feeling like expecting this roster to not run out of gas would have been unreasonable. I was hopeful that we'd sprint to the finish but in an "anything can happen in baseball" way rather than a 2011 "this team has the horses" way. It just never felt like this team was built to go on a big winning streak. Offense too boom or bust, and if you do win four or five in a row, you start to run out of dependable relievers really quickly. Maybe they pull out these last four and hang with it. If so, I'll be thrilled. If not, just trying to enjoy another half week of baseball.
  20. It's weird. I don't feel that heartbroken? I don't know, maybe it's easier to just get beat than to lose like those three in a row earlier this week. Also, I sort of feel like 2 down with 3 to go is not the end of the world. That's assuming the team can bounce back tomorrow, of course. Either way, agree with the bright future angle. This season has delivered so much more than anticipated. I'd would have been happy with 78 wins. 83 is pretty awesome. Let's get 87 and just hope. It's also kind of funny to me how essentially random baseball can be. 83 wins at this point in the AL is good enough for like a 4 game WC lead.
  21. Actually, yeah. At least, I think so. I mean, I've seen lots of 6 run leads evaporate in Colorado. It's harder than people think to hit homers there, and the real Coors effect comes from singles and doubles. You get that many baserunners, there's always the potential for a rally. I know I wouldn't feel safe as a Brewer fan up 9-3 after four, not against the Reds and not against the Marlins. Is it likely they win? No. Is it possible? You bet. Of course, either way, the Crew needs a W today and (probably)/or (at the very least) tomorrow. You're not out of it until the math says so, and if one of the next two go the right way, you've got three days to go game-by-game. A sweep, and things are even better.
  22. The Brewers need to win at least 4, I think, but never assume a 6-0 game is over in Colorado. It's 6-3 now, and there's 5 innings to play. Baserunners abound in that place.
  23. As Fear the Chorizo alluded to, I recall "Let's go Cubs" chants in almost every game I've watched this year (the Cubs are the local TV broadcast team), including Cincy, Baltimore, and Tampa. I think others have said it. Cubs fans are geographically scattered and it seems like lots of them have cash to spare. Milwaukee probably gets the brunt of this because it's probably easier to go to a Brewer game than find tix at Wrigley these days. When the Brewers were up in the early 2010s and the Cubs were putting up 100 L's, it didn't feel like a big issue. It's annoying, but it juices up the rivalry, and I don't the Brewers will complain about getting to 2.5 million in attendance this year. Milwaukee's capacity to outdraw its market is a reflection of the city being a great baseball town, but it doesn't hurt to have Cubs fans pad the numbers. Go sweep the Reds!
