It's time to get Josh. I know the BP doesn't inspire confidence, but Hader should not have gone out there for the 6th. He did his job but didn't look right. Two hitters too late. Hope they can hold them. -
Craig's best laid bullpen plans going to heck tonight. Only 4 from Suter and now probably (I hope) just the one from Hader. Means we may have to get four out of Knebel, Swarzak, Hughes, Torres, Drake, and Jeffress. Not excited about that prospect.

Maybe it's a DP with Mauer running, but that's a long throw to second and a tough turn. Plus, who knows if the infield is positioned the same with 1st and 3rd and one out. I think the Twins probably get a run there either way. Good to keep them to one, at least. Add on!

Very efficient early for Santana. Not what you want to see against a team with a lot of bullpen question marks and pretty heavy usage yesterday.

Good news is three hard hit balls. Though that's been the case a lot lately. I think tonight favors the Twins matchup wise, so it'd be big to take this one. Brewers should have a good shot in each of the next three just looking at pitching. Of course, it's baseball, so never know.

Great job, pitching. Wow. Maybe I have rose-colored glasses, but I think CC was mostly fine with the BP tonight. With Knebel and Hader out and Swarzak working on what? Four straight days? He got seven out of Davies, went to Barnes, and didn't panic and bring in Swarzak to get a four-out save. I can see bringing AS in in the 8th, but somebody was going to have to get outs in the ninth. I wouldn't have wanted Swarzak trying to do that with a one-run lead, assuming he would have gotten through the 8th. Series win! Hope Shaw's alright and try to sweep tomorrow! How about a burger day?

Swarzak. Surprised we haven't seen Hughes lately. I'd at least have him throwing instead of Drake. Finish it off, BP!

Well, that's the best AB of the series against Alvarado. So, progress for Villar. Needed to lay off that 1-1 pitch.

Seriously. Is the Rays bullpen like completely overloaded? They let Stanek face three guys in the ninth after he threw two good innings. I don't know how you can justify not just patting him on the back and turning it over to someone else in the ninth. If I were a Rays fan, I would be like too stunned to even be mad right now. Glad it helped the Crew at least. Let's get some more!

Why are the Rays letting this guy throw three innings? That just seems silly in a one-run game. Maybe I'm missing something.

I don't which backwards K was worse. Santana's there, or Aguilar's earlier. Both fastballs down the middle. Almost looked like they were expecting something offspeed.

I have to say, pretty good zone from the ump tonight. Broxton looks more relaxed at the plate to me. Seems quieter leading up to the pitch.

Neck contusion for Shaw. Could have been a lot worse. I hope he avoided a concussion. I was having Corey Koskie flashbacks.

Looking at the replay, I thought the 3B missed the tag. Too close to challenge, but FWIW. Still a bad move by Arcia. Risk not worth reward.

Should Shaw have to go to the DL, my guess would be Phillips comes up? Lefty bat and Perez becomes the third baseman for a couple of weeks? Really hope it doesn't come to that. Shaw's probably the one offensive guy who's irreplaceable.

My first thought was Arcia too, but he seems to be struggling lately. It's funny how quickly baseball changes. Letting go of Scooter made so much sense during Spring, and I felt really good about our 2B situation coming into the year. Now, that seems like the black hole of the offense, Sogard's hot few weeks aside. It all happens so fast. Not to say I want Scooter back. I don't. But Villar has regressed a lot, even as someone who expected him to come back to earth.

I don't know if Stearns will ever view us as being in any particular stage (i.e. rebuild, "win now") or as anything to ever be "complete." I think that as long as Stearns is GM and Attanasio trusts him, we will always continue to look for ways to infuse talent into the system at all levels. We added MLB pieces when we have not been expected to win at the MLB level, and we will trade away guys from the MLB roster when we are expected to win. Stearns seems to be very "big picture," so he will continue to try to add value to the entire franchise, not just the current MLB team. No one is perfect, but I'm kind of fascinated by how Stearns works. This. I stand by the idea that the flurry of relief pitching trades is part of this. There was an opportunity to move guys at high prices, and Stearns took it. I get that it left the bullpen pretty bare, but thinking of the great run of talent he got for Thornburg, Smith, and Jeffress is just crazy. And I don't think it's crazy to think that those three trades are one gigantic reason why the relief market was down this year. If that exemplifies what we're in for moving forward, I'm pretty thrilled. Opportunistic seems like the right word. Obviously, I hope the Brewers catch the Cubs by winning about 15 in a row, but I'm looking forward to this offseason. I think it will be one where we find out a lot about the plan to sustainably compete near- and long-term. DS is a fun GM to watch.

That lineup is...odd. It's tough to put one together when lots of guys are struggling, but it was nice to see Keon hit well last night. I think he'll have another good day today. Him and Shaw are my picks. Taking 2 of 3 closes the home stand right. Let's do it.

It's never difficult for me to take pleasure in beating the Cardinals. In fact, any day the Cardinals lose is a half-decent day. Great bullpen performance tonight. Some hard hit outs helped, but having Swarzak makes things a bit easier in the late innings. Wake the bats up tomorrow, and let's take the series!

Swarzak's slider is a good pitch. He really had the Cardinals off balance that inning. Well-called and well-thrown. It would be awfully great to get a run this inning.
