  1. I really like how Pina calls the game. He isn't obvious like Lucroy used to be, does a good job of keeping hitters guessing.
  2. Hey we are using a good reliever in a close game to try and keep it close! Love it, I like the decision from CC.
  3. Hellickson really is not sharp. Missing his spots, offspeed stuff isn't getting a ton of misses, minimal deception in his delivery. I'm surprised we haven't hit him harder...
  4. It would be nice to pull Guerra for offense, but I think we should try to get a 6th inning out of him given the lack of length we are getting from SP.
  5. He's not. Even if we don't get Dozier, I'll be extremely critical of Stearns if he doesn't bring in someone. There are 4 or 5 options out there that are much better than Miller and shouldn't be all that expensive.
  6. Deflating not to score, but Shaw’s bouncer to first wasn’t a weak out. Nearly a snowcone by Zimmerman to snare it, saving a double. Was harder hit than the one by Yelich last night. I was going to say, every at bat that inning was pretty good except Aguilars...and Shaw ripped that one hard. Worked the count, got on base, and we were one very very good defensive play away from a 3 run inning. Guerra is getting better while Hellickson is getting worse, this game is not over yet. Just need to keep having good atbats, we'll score some on Hellickson.
  7. Might be more likely to add the DH to the NL and start seeing 9 man bullpens. I also think making it easier for teams to make a bazillion bullpen changes per game, which seriously slows the game down, is not something baseball should be doing.
  8. Thames is apparently starting in RF and leading off. I haven't seen the rest of the lineup, but with that I'm going to assume. Thames Cain Yelich Aguilar Shaw Saladino Miller Pina
  9. They aren't moving Hader to the rotation. Certainly not this year and my guess would be not at all. I'm a huge Hader to the rotation advocate, but I agree it is unlikely this year. I suspect Hader put all his offseason energy into mastering his slider so he could fill a relief role. Maybe this coming offseason, Hader works on furthering his changeup. This is very similar to the type of thing Nelson did, worked on one thing per offseason and went from being a 2 pitch pitcher with mediocre command to a 4 pitch pitcher with good command. Hader(and any prospect that reaches the majors) is not a finished product that can no longer improve or add pitches once they reach the majors. We'll see if he does(I hope Hader has even 80% of the work ethic that Nelson has), but at the moment he is not a starter though.
  10. I agree that it's likely just a small sample thing, but the altitude does affect the break on pitches. Could have something to do with it. The whole break on pitches thing. I'd bet he's still swinging at sliders that would normally break into the dirt, but is getting a piece because they aren't moving. Arcia has 2 xbh, 12 k, 4 bb in 44 AB on the road, I personally don't care at all about the home numbers. It's definitely better than he was, especially the BB numbers. That said, I don't think he's quite ready yet.
  11. He might just be a placeholder. They just need someone to swing the bat and catch some balls in the outfield during their 70 day exhibition season they're in. He's probably a little bit inferior to Broxton but not a sizeable gap. I'd imagine Broxton is a better CF defender, but I don't know enough about Field in the field (pun intended). Field immediately accepted an assignment to AAA. Probably more of a depth move. A contending team doesn't want someone like Field playing a meaningful role. Adam Jones is more logical than the other 2. He's still a very solid hitter despite the defense not being what it was. He gets great marks for his clubhouse presence as well. Hard to imagine him becoming much of a clubhouse leader in 70 games with the guys currently there, but he certainly would be a positive to some degree. Field is probably a depth move similar to us snagging Liriano. I've felt like that move was a precursor to one or more of Broxton/Phillips/Santana getting traded since it happened. When we get healthy and some of those guys go down to AAA, there won't really be space for Liriano.
  12. I'm wondering if they'd be willing to put Thames in the OF...considering the hamstring issues. I think it would make sense to sit Braun today and have Thames play RF, but if they don't want him running that much than one of him/Aguilar will sit today.
  13. I think you'll be shocked by the return the O's get for Britton, but with that said I highly doubt we get him...and any other rental will be fairly reasonably priced. It would likely be trading from 40 man depth pieces and clearing a few spots.
  14. Albers was a huge underrated part of our bullpen success in the first couple months of the season. His ERA entering June was barely 1. Yeah he struggled in June but I'm willing to associate at least some of that through trying to play through his injury. Besides, they're committed to him at 2.5M next season anyway -- barring a collapse, I very much think he's back. Oh really? I didn't look, but I always thought we had him on a 1 year deal...and I anticipated someone else paying him more than us because he's been so good. If he's under contract, he should definitely be back.
  15. Anyone else noticed some weird splits for Arcia in AAA. 6 BB and 2 K in 41 home PA, 4 BB and 12 K in 44 road PA. Probably a small sample thing, but still very odd. I don't know why Colorado Springs would impact those ratios so much...
  16. This is all true. Wins and losses are a pretty big chunk of it too, probably the biggest part, fair or not. I tend to agree with a lot of the initial post here. I'm a big critic of CC's game day decisions, but that's honestly such a small chunk of his job. I think he's excellent in most other facets of the job, and I believe he'll get better at game management. As for Stearns, I won't quite say he has Belicheat job security...but it's close. We look like we're going to be good for a significant stretch going forward, and Stearns has hit on trades much more often than he's missed.
  17. Right. If Stearns didn't deal Santana + prospects for Clevinger or something of the sort...shame on Stearns. Unlikely though, the media gave the impression we were actively trying to trade Santana...which makes sense given the moves we made. So my guess is the offers were very low and he was not worth moving.
  18. Look we can go on and on. But what we do know is this. Domingo Santana was not needed given the other offseason moves. David Stearns tried to trade him in the offseason but didn’t. Domingo Santana has had a terrible year, his trade value has tanked and now we need him even less. If you think Stearns handled this situation perfectly fine that is certainly your right. Personally I think he could have handled it better. I think he gambled that Santana would have another good year and his trade value would increase and I think he lost that gamble big time. Yes, he handled it perfectly fine. Next question. I tend to agree, though it's hard to definitively know how he handled it without knowing what kind of deals were on the table for Santana. For all we know, the demand simply wasn't there.
  19. You generally make a good point about rotating out our older replaceable arms for younger guys with some upside. I'm not sure we'll see Albers back next year, and Suter definitely won't be pitching next year. I also don't like the idea of Wilkerson in the bullpen. Part of the reason we should be looking to trade so heavily this offseason is the 40 man crunch. Prospect for prospect trades aren't common, so really we should be looking to trade some of them for upgrades this year...whether rentals or controllable. We have enough depth that we can trade a few future 40 man pieces and still have solid depth at most spots. I'll also add that I like Hader in the rotation as well, but you're going to meet a ton of resistance on that. I'd bet there are some posters here who still think Hader only has 1 pitch.
  20. I prefer Dozier as well, I don't really condone the idea of getting Moustakas unless he's dirt cheap enough to be a part-time player for us, which is unlikely. The defense gymnastics we'd have to do to fit him in full time probably isn't worth the upgrade...especially with better 2b options out there. I do wonder if Shaw is part of a package for a SP like Archer or Degrom, and that's why we keep checking in on Moustakas.
  21. I'm not concerned about looking specifically for an OBP guy on the trade market. None of the candidates out there are going to impact the top 4-5 guys in the order. We'll be rolling Cain, Yelich, Aguilar, Shaw 1-4 regardless of who we trade for. Their BB% are 13.4, 8.8, 10.5, 13.2...all very good. Most guys we'll be trading for will slot in 5th or 6th most likely, we want someone that can hit and drive those guys in.
  22. I understand your point, but in fairness Moustakas is a much better defender at 3b than Aguilar...and we don't really know how Shaw would do at 2b. I suspect his range would be a serious problem there, but with all the shifting it could be hidden to some degree.
  23. Way too generous. I talk about a "top 10 organizational prospect" in an average system. That would be equivalent to a top 300 prospect since there are 30 systems. Currently I would put Hiura, Burnes and Peralta as solid top 100 prospects. Then for Brewer players that would be top 10 organizational prospects in an average system, minus the 3 players already listed as top 100 prospects...I'd have the list as Corey Ray, Bryce Turang, Brett Phillips, Luis Ortiz, Lucas Erceg, Tristan Lutz, Mauricio Dubon. So I'd have the Brewer's top 10 organizational prospects or better right at 10...or basically 10 top 300 players. Jacob Nottingham was 10th in Baseball America's update, they didn't have Turang listed yet so that's the one difference between thier list and mine. Zack Brown is the big riser and he probably makes the list if he continues this pace through the remainder of the season. Except not all top 10 lists are equal. For example, the Cubs might be lucky to have 3 or 4 guys in a top 300. The Brewers system is probably back end of the top 10 farms and are generally very deep with solid/unspectacular prospects that fit well within a top 200 or 300 list.
