  1. I was very critical of the call going to Saladino over Orf, it's hard not to warm to this guy a bit though.
  2. Right? Just groove fastballs to that guy. Worst case scenario, he hits a triple. He might end up at 3rd from a walk anyways...
  3. I would argue Villar doesn't try to hit a HR everytime...on full display yesterday
  4. Agreed, where he is currently is working. Let's see if he can sustain success there all season. Think about a brief AAA stint in 2019 before an MLB roster spot if all goes well. That said, a good first half makes him a likely trade candidate given our current OF situation.
  5. Ray has been hitting the ball well of late. For the year, he his hitting .269 with a .349 OBP and an .829 OPS. He has 7 SBs - and hasn't been caught. One impressive stat is that almost 1/2 of his hits (20 of 42) have been for extra bases. 12 doubles, 3 triples and 5 HRs. He's also improved his walk rate to a solid 10%, and cut his strikeouts dramatically (from 31% last year to about 23% this year). Ray has - thus far - shown to be very streaky, so I'm not holding my breath that he won't go into a funk and have his number plummet. But it's nice to see him doing pretty all right. I'm curious to hear how his defense has progressed. He's been playing CF 90% of the time. If he can play the middle well, that really helps him out. I weirdly would rather have a minor leaguer that's developing be streaky than consistently decent. I feel like it shows what he's capable of should he develop consistency. With his k rate, keep in mind he struck out 10 times in the first 4 games. I know they all count, but looking through his game logs...his k rate looks downright reasonable. His OPS improved from 731 in April to 1036 in May...great trend. A few more good weeks and he'll truly be forcing his way back onto the fantasy radar. Good thing we didn't trade him this offseason for pennies on the dollar.
  6. I saw that about Braun/Perez. Honestly it's a bit maddening that Braun wasn't DL'd. Perez I can understand as our middle infield depth in the minors is a bit thin, and clearly Perez was available to run and probably play defense. Braun is just stupid, especially since Perez was already hurt and we shouldn't be 2 men down on the bench. We could have had Choi or Phillips PH in that spot over Bandy...or heck we could have had Saladino over Bandy. I'm not entirely sure Bandy could get a hit if the ball was literally put on a tee for him. An solid AAAA guy at 100% is generally going to be better than a first division regular at 80%...which is what I suspect the situation is with Braun and has been the last few days. The last few years, his poor at bats have come when he's not been right and been trying to play through stuff. 10 day DL, let him get closer to 100%, maybe he'll have some better atbats.
  7. I don't blame CC at all for using Logan there. You can't pitch our best 3 relievers every game...especially in mid may. You could argue for using Jennings instead of Logan, but Jennings has had struggles recently as well. Of all the blunders CC makes(like PH Bandy...***?), this one shouldn't be getting this much attention.
  8. Such as? He could be referring to the selective enforcement of pine tar for pitchers, and other substances pitchers use to aid them with grip/spin.
  9. Gennett is a solid player, but he isn't really a first division regular. He's much better suited being one of the better hitters on a 2nd division team than batting 7th or 8th and playing average defense on a contender.
  10. False, it came down to Cano using a substances that Cano knows he isn't allowed to use...and him getting caught using it.
  11. https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-second-baseman-robinson-cano-surprised-by-report-of-link-to-biogenesis-clinic/c-45492012 Quick google search netted me this. Maybe biogenesis sent her the drugs, and this lady was paid handsomely to potentially take the fall.
  12. 15 years ago, I would buy this 1000%. These days I don't think so. I'm sure a signficant number of players skate the system, but for me a significant number is maybe 3-5% at most. That still would be 30-50 guys that make an mlb appearance that are cheating.
  13. 2.4 WAR is very solid, especially considering it's basically all coming from offense as he's an average defender at best. Obviously in hindsight, cutting the guy wasn't a wise decision. I agree above, and Stearns has won far and away more than he's lost. No GM makes the perfect decision every time.
  14. The guys who juice don't look at it that way. They are used to being a great player, and want to continue being great as long as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if Cano has been juicing a good chunk of his career. Either way, it's not a hard narrative to follow. Getting older, trying to recapture his glory days and cement HOF status...maybe even trying to help the Mariners make a WS run, potentially knew the process on how to beat the system from when he was younger pre-contract...only this time around he got caught. Plus, factor in the requirement of an IPA to rule that the diuretic was used to mask a PED...I don't believe Cano for a second. Verlander has it right here...
  15. I find this interesting, which basically makes Cano's statement about as useful as toilet paper.
  16. Reports I saw said it will be effective immediately. It's somewhat fortunate, but again he'll be without pay during the suspension. CBS sports says he can't serve suspension until he's healthy. It works that way in the NBA too. Here's what I saw. This is all happening fast, I'm sure we'll figure out soon enough a unanimous verdict on when the suspension starts
  17. Reports I saw said it will be effective immediately. It's somewhat fortunate, but again he'll be without pay during the suspension.
  18. First suspension, will be 80 games without pay. For quick math, he just cost himself roughly half of his $24 million salary...whoops
  19. Reports I saw say it was for a masking agent, not specifically a PED. I'm sure we'll get more detailed information and statements soon.
  20. I think the concerns on Braun are a bit overblown. I do agree a short DL stint is a reasonable idea, I'm in favor of this for most players as very often in sports...an average guy at 100% is better than a star at 90%. That said, I think both the pro-braun and anti-braun sides on the season have decent argument. Braun's definitely having issues with his approach...and the eye test says he doesn't look good at the plate. That said, metrics pretty much unanimously say he's bound for improvement. His BABIP is 250, only 28 points below his batting average of 228. His BB rate is down a bit and k rate is up a bit. His contact rate is noticably down, especially on pitches outside the strike zone. I think a mindset change is needed. I feel like he's trying to hit everything too hard right now and is pressing. He should probably start with an opposite field approach and build from there, and he should probably generally start taking a few more pitches.
  21. I'm a bit surprised Dozier isn't being discussed. The Twins are a shade below 500 right now. Mind you they are very talented and could improve...but if they don't, Dozier is in a contract year and would be a rental. I know he doesn't fit the flexibility that Stearns/CC desire, but the talent would play. We have enough flexibility elsewhere to make it work. Cain/Yelich/Braun/Shaw/Dozier/Thames/Pina/Arcia...take arguably our weakest offensive position and replace it with a 40 hr hitter.
  22. I doubt him demanding a trade will really do much, but at what point do you ever find the happy middle point? Path A: Archer continues to suck. Even if the demands go lower and lower, how much of a risk do you want to take at a potential $30 million investment for the next 3 years (sure, you can decline his option, but what's the point there?) when he's a big risk to even outperform what we already have? Path B: He starts to pitch well again. Demand/price goes back up to several top 100 prospect type things that blocked the Astros and Brewers from trading for him in the last calendar year anyways...and he still has the risk of going right back into the tank. I somewhat expect the Rays to hold tight to him whether he rebounds or not, I don't think they'll simply take the best offer at the deadline. I think the Rays are a bit delusional on what they have in Archer. I also wouldn't call several top 100 prospects the demand for him. The asking price, sure...I think we've seen that isn't what a team is willing to pay though.
  23. I completely agree on Hamels being a target. I've had my eye on him for this season since last year trade deadline. I knew the Rangers wouldn't trade him over the offseason, and would only consider if they fell out of contention this year...which I figured they would with the Astros and Angels around. He knows very well he's pitching for his last contract. I doubt the $20 million option gets picked up, but he could be fighting for one last 3/36 type deal if all goes well. We've also had success trading with Texas recently, which helps. This deadline in general could see some serious impact talents drastically change the playoff landscape. What if the Dodgers land Machado in mid-July back 8 games? Coupled with getting Turner and Kershaw back, they could make a serious run. Donaldson could move. Maybe Dozier if the twins don't rebound and the indians start playing like they should...he'd fit with the Brewers. I don't recall a trade deadline with such high end positional talent being available, will be interesting how much teams are willing to give up for them. Premium talent, even on rentals, tends to net a premium return. Look no further than chapman.
