  1. Fine, a position player. You could replace Drake with a sack of potatoes and I'd be happy with the move...
  2. YES! Depth and quality depth are 2 different things. I cannot understand why Drake didn't get the same treatment as Torres. It blows my mind, it's almost like they didn't watch him pitch at all last season. I feel more confident having Perez pitch an inning than Drake. We had much more depth heading into this season than we did last season. Guys like Lopez, Williams, Houser, Ramirez, Derby, any number of SP that could convert to relief short term(Guerra/Suter/Woodruff). We are taxing that depth a bit due to injury, but we still have a few quality options in the minors if we have any more injuries in the next couple weeks. It seems like a no brainer to move Suter to the bullpen, cut Drake, and Woodruff back up to the rotation. Suter can spot start if we have a SP injury, Houser/Ramirez/Derby are relief options in injury, and reinforcements are only a few weeks away.
  3. Bullpen depth is definitely a mild concern. Miley is making a rehab start today I think, and I believe they are planning for 3 rehab starts before it's decision time. I fully expect us to keep him and bump someone(suter) to the bullpen. We also have Logan coming back in probably 3-4 weeks and Knebel around the end of May. Long story short, we likely have to get through the next 2-3 weeks with what we have before reinforcements arrive. That means we might have to hide Drake at the back end for those 2-3 weeks and hopefully he only costs us one or two more games until we can finally get rid of him. What we need more than anything, is the offense to truly get going and win some games on their own to keep us in it early on. We could get a heck of a lot better a month or so from now with prospects coming up from AAA and Nelson/Logan/Knebel all returning.
  4. How many games are we going to simply give away because of roster mismanagement? Why are 2 dinged up guys not on the DL? Why is Drake on the roster? Why didn't Counsel/Stearns learn their lesson about keeping crappy pitchers because "depth" last year with Milone?
  5. Sogard(LF), Villar, Cain, Shaw, Santana, Aguilar, Arcia, Nottingham, P - my prediction
  6. I agree it's an advantage. It will especially be fun if their pitching staff has an injury or two, and they have to go to their black hole of a minor league system and find someone to throw what will basically amount to BP. I know it's early, but my call of their pitching in general struggling this year has been spot on. Their SP ERA is 3rd worst in all of baseball, and their SP WHIP is dead last. Good thing they spent all that money on Darvish and Chatwood...
  7. Nottingham's defense has improved considerably over the past 12-18 months, and he was above average offensively last year in the Southern League by wRC+. He had an abnormally low batting average but everything else was good. Spot on, I'll add his avg was weighted down by .255 BABIP. For his career he's been more 350-360, so that's a shockingly low number.
  8. I wasn't one of them but it is not like Nottingham was exactly giving much to be confident about. The report was poor defense and struggled at the plate. Not sure what to get too excited about before his hot start this season. The only part of that that's true...is that you weren't one of the people being negative about Nottingham. The report of poor defense and struggled at the plate doesn't tell the whole story. He improved drastically behind the plate last year, and his offensive peripherals improved despite the overall numbers stagnating. So the report you are referring to is simply inaccurate, unless one reads a scouting report from a national level source and looks solely at OPS to determine how he was at the plate.
  9. I've been generally critical of the Brewers for the last few years for trying to avoid DL stints in the manner that they do. If you think an injury is going to take 3 or 4 days to get back to 90% best case, are you better off getting a fresh body right away or playing a man short for 3 days hoping for the best case? The Brewers seem to opt for the former, when it's far more logical to bring up the fresh/health player and give the injured player 10 days to recover closer to 100%. Especially in April, if this is September it's a different story. And especially in the case of Pina and position of catcher, calves are tricky and easy to reaggravate. Pina should have hit the DL pretty much right away. Bandy almost got thrown out of the game yesterday, which would have left us in dire straits. And even aside from Bandy's bonehead decision to argue...he could get hurt(as catchers often do) and have left us in those same dire straits. Hopefully Counsel and Stearns have learned something from this situation, and other similar situations...and are quicker to use the DL going forward versus crossing their fingers and hoping it's only a 3-4 day injury when it's more likely 7-10 days.
  10. I hope they let him play. He probably is a better player than Bandy already. Amazing to me how many people wanted Nottingham exposed to rule 5 just this past offseason...
  11. Outfield assists usually happen because teams will run on poor defenders a lot more often. Interesting theory but I'd need to see some more evidence, just a quick check and Vladimir Guerrero for example was in the top 4 in his league in assists for basically 10 straight years despite his reputation. Ichiro is similar, top 5 in the league in RF assists for most of the 2000s. I'll add that Jay Bruce was averaging about 10 per season for most of his career. I think it's very well known that dude has a cannon. Teams absolutely will run on a weaker arm more often and take more risks, but you still have to make a good throw. And Braun is relatively well known to have an average but accurate arm from the outfield.
  12. I've watched video of two of his extra base hits and they were badly misplayed by the outfielders. Trust me, I want him to succeed but am tempering my enthusiasm for a while. I am rooting for Corey Ray to show offensive improvement this season, that would be an encouraging boost to the system. However, even with the hot start in this small sample his strikeout rate currently sits at 30% so far this season. In over 500 plate appearances at High-A last season his strikeout rate was also 31%. That is the biggest area where I would like to see him improve. One of his issues last season appeared to be an inability to catch up to fastballs on the outer half of the plate, so hopefully he has made some swing adjustments in that regard as well. I will be encouraged this year if Ray is able to put the ball in play more often and cut his strikeout rate down below 25%. That is a small sample, I'll also add he hasn't struck out in the last 3 games. Maybe some jitters those first couple games?
  13. Anyone notice that Broxton did not play for CS yesterday? I'm wondering if he's on his way to New York. If Cain's quad is still causing him trouble, we could use another bat. Especially considering our only CF option would be Perez...or Villar. Both are far from ideal fits there.
  14. The Brewers haven't scored a run in 18 innings. Thats easy to calculate with back to back shutouts and Braun's game winner 3 days ago. A couple runs early on Mr 85 mph.
  15. I don't think that should be a huge concern. Only Jennings and Barnes pitched yesterday, and Jennings only threw 16 pitches. I would think Hader, Albers, Drake, Jennings, and Jeffress are all available today. Having a 6th arm available I can't imagine is a huge concern. I suspect they think Houser is more prepared to pitch at the mlb level than Williams. The Brewers generally must see something they like in Houser, I felt like he's been a club favorite since we traded for him.
  16. I'm ok with it too. It could have been Guerra and the news would have put me to sleep. Houser coming up is exciting. Not to nitpick ya, but 10 day DL now. If Yelich goes to the DL it's important we keep Perez as our backup CF. Sogard or Aguilar woudl be first to go, though it's hard to justify dumping Aguilar with how he's hit so far.
  17. There are at least 4-5 names that I would have guessed before Houser. Definitely a surprise, I know the guy has decent stuff...but I don't see how he's a better option than Williams. I feel like Williams is to the Brewers as Jeff Janis is to the Packers.
  18. https://twitter.com/Brewers/status/982344532065894400 Wow, did not see that coming
  19. By BP do you mean bullpen or batting practice pitcher?
  20. Coulda called it. He was pretty horrible last year. mlb gameday has him mostly 88-90 with his 4 seamer. He went down from 93s most of his career to 91.7 per fangraphs. If he suffers another dip...he's going to have a hard time remaining effective in this league.
  21. Is anyone else thoroughly enjoying watching Lester struggle mightily against a sub-replacement level team?
  22. $14 million, I'm guessing that's a 1 year deal then.
  23. I think he gets a 2-3 year deal at roughly the same AAV as Davis. My call is 2/32 with a vesting option.
