  1. Maybe we would have? But I don't think it's totally certain, because you also have to account for the negative value of losing starts in the 2nd half from guys who have been pretty good starting for us, like Suter and Woodruff, and if you trade Hader losing the value he has had to the pen which has been even more dramatic. So I don't think it's totally certain that acquiring Quintana would have dramatically affected our record. I also totally agree with the second part of what you said, but I wonder why people generally feel that way moreso now (don't give up the farm for a playoff spot, build a better foundation first), whereas back in 2008 it was the opposite, most fans felt, it doesn't really matter what we gave up for CC, he got us to the playoffs. You'll still get a ton of fans who don't understand how to build a successful, winning franchise who would want to trade prospects for big name talent any chance we get. Casual fans that don't track our prospects and understand team control rules, etc. I wasn't on this board in 2008 so I have no idea what the thought process here was, I could definitely see quite a few people being unhappy with a big trade for CC though considering what we gave up.
  2. guerra will be out of options in 2018. he'd have to clear waivers to be outrighted to aaa. I think you either use Guerra in the bullpen or take that risk that he won't clear waivers. There's a very real chance he loses he 40 man spot(or is traded) before rule 5 anyways.
  3. Molina apparently is in concussion protocol and vomited when he left the field yesterday. If he has a concussion, he's done for the season for sure. In theory that should make our games against the cardinals easier to win.
  4. It would be ideal if the cardinals were mathematically eliminated before we head that way for 3 games. Give them nothing to play for kinda thing.
  5. Miami has their best pitcher going tomorrow. They need to get that one as I doubt they have a chance on Wednesday. I like how the cincy series lines up. Focus, good at bats, grind out 6 wins boys!
  6. There is a good possibility that Hader-unless he improves his secondary pitches- ends up in the pen for effectiveness reasons. But 5 innings a astray isn't good for the bullpen long term. Anyone questioning Hader's secondary stuff must not have actually seen him throw it. He gets swings and misses with both pitches often, especially his slider. I'll be fairly upset if he doesn't end up in the rotation to start 2018 unless Stearns goes rogue and adds 2 high end SP in the off season.
  7. Yeah we should not be even considering trading Josh Hader. I can't blame them for asking, but absolutely not. True impact pitching with this much team control is solid gold, whether he's a starter or reliever he has absurd value. At this point, it seems fairly obvious that a trade for Gray or Quintana might have put us over the edge to a playoff spot this year. But I think it makes way more sense to make moves like that when we have a more stable core of talent that is truly ready to go toe to toe with a team like the Dodgers or Nationals. Sure this team might have gotten in, but is there any chance we would have been favorites against anybody? And we still might sneak in.......
  8. I think he'll be active on both fronts. I could see some sort of trade happening with our Phillips/Brinson/Broxton situation. He could certainly listen on anyone...Braun, Santana, even Shaw/Thames. His decision making to this point has given him so much flexibility and chips to work with this offseason...I feel like Stearns is going to blow our minds yet again this offseason, but on a much larger scale considering the ammo he has available.
  9. We have young talent on the roster that should be reasonably expected to improve. Stearns absolutely does not have to make any bold decisions or anything. We have so much talent and so many assets available with a ton of payroll flexibility, Stearns pretty much will have no restrictions heading into the offseason. I think we will have Anderson/Davies/Woodruff/Hader all fairly locked into starting roles with a competition for the 5th slot. Obviously you don't want to go to spring training with only 5-6 guys in case of injuries or poor performance, so I could see some veterans brought in on minor league deals to compete. A big splash signing is possible, but would also leave us no flexibility when Nelson comes back from injury and/or when Burnes is ready. I don't think they make a big ticket free agent pitcher signing unless they aren't expecting Nelson back until after the all star break or worse.
  10. I'm gong to follow up with my season seat rep tomorrow, as I'm a ssh. Since I have no proof I highly doubt anything comes of it. But I'm going to try.
  11. If this is true, someone needs to dig deeper and find out more information and get to the bottom of any connection this may have with the outcome of games. I have a friend that works the games and this person wouldn't lie about it. Was seen firsthand.
  12. I Have an inside connection and was told apparently "guests" of the umpires were wearing cubs gear tonight. Why am I not surprised. This **** is rigged without question
  13. I was at the game, but a buddy told me sogard was pushed off the base. Is that true?
  14. Sogard grinds out at bats really well, takes his walks, and plays solid defense at SS. He doesn't have the flashy ability of Arcia, but he's far more consistent. I don't necessarily agree with Arcia sitting everyday, that's probably Counsel's reasoning though.
  15. Lackey is a RHP, don't you mean all lefty? I'm going with Sogard, Walker, Shaw, Santana, Thames(LF), Aguilar, Vogt, Phillips, P for lineup. braun sits today and plays tomorrow, he looked gassed yesterday.
  16. You can say that about every game, the onus is on the players, bad bounce here, whatever. The manager should be putting the players in the best possible position to succeed, and Counsel did not do that yesterday...not by a long shot. This can in part be traced back to the pittsburgh series as well and that none of our top 3 relievers were available.
  17. Maybe not. And the players absolutely could and should have won the game. Using his players early cost us a better chance in the 9th and the 10th and didn't benefit us at all. The Berry pinch run had very little chance to provide any benefit. Broxton PH for phillips was slightly more understandable but again, Phillips is the superior player. And the Drake decision was terrible, I have no qualms about his bullpen usage prior to that. And the guys that he generally uses are taxed, but we have many other arms in that bullpen. Literally every single other bullpen arm is a better option against bryant than Drake, except maybe wang. Williams, Torres, Hughes, heck even Guerra/Garza. The dude is awful awful against RH hitting, and Counsel knows it. Putting Drake in felt like a white flag.
  18. I couldn't disagree more on how he played his chips. The squib hit was incredibly annoying, but Counsel played his chips like a fool. Berry pinch running in the 7th with sogard up was just plain silly. He was behind someone, he couldn't be used to steal anyways. Was he hoping Sogard would hit one in the gap...not likely? broxton pinch hitting for phillips was also dumb, phillips is the superior player and has fine splits against lefties, save broxton for running. And I'm not sure why Drake was allowed to face Bryant. It would have made more sense to use torres against the first 2 guys and drake against rizzo only(or keep Torres in if he gets the first 2 guys). Drake should never ever ever face a RH hitter, especially Bryant. I get that Shaw hit a rope, maybe the runner is held. If we had other options on the bench, we could have had Perez PH for Santana in that spot in the 9th. Perez has been clutch and is a contact guy. Heck he could even safety squeeze and probably get the run home. I get there's a force, but with the infield in and Broxton/Berry/Villar on 3rd...I believe that person with a huge lead could get home faster than 3b could field a bunt and make a throw home. Regardless of the what-ifs, clearly in this case counsel used all his chips way way way too early and it cost us.
  19. I don't think a couple tough losses will dampen their spirits. They'll come out firing today. I'm very frustrated by the managerial decisions last night. Counsel played way too fast and loose with his chips yesterday and it cost us. If any of Villar/Berry/Keon are available in the 9th to run, we win on the shaw single. Santana's at bat was just awful. Why is he trying for 4 runs when all we need is 1? Anything in play, anything! Make them make a play. Also frustrating is how many softly hit RBI's the cubs had early in the game. That's just bad luck though. Today is a new day. I'll be at the game for this one, here's hoping we bounce back with a big win.
  20. Walker is playing more for the team than guys who have been here all year. Swinging to get on base. And the results speak for themselves
  21. Santana won't come out. Arcia might sub in but that would be it
  22. That steal was enormous. Without that it's probably a line drive double play
  23. I wanted barnes out of there too. Credit where it's due, good call to leave him in
