  1. I've been thinking this for weeks. I feel like I've been disagreeing with most of his decisions for a while. I feel like he overmanages in the wrong spots and has been making poor decisions. I felt like his biggest mistake yesterday was letting Barnes face Votto. I have absolutely no idea what he was thinking letting that happen. Sure Gennett hit a HR off wang, I still felt like the right move there is having Wang face votto. Clearly Barnes didn't have it and he was already around 20 pitches. I'm also not sure why Villar was bunting there, that hasn't been his strategy all season...why switch in September? And then all this tinkering with the lineup, and why in the world has Thames been sitting so much? Is he injured and I'm completely unaware of it? Thames was career 2 for 2 with 2 hr against the starter last night, why in the world would you bench him unless he's injured. I hope he's taking notes of the decisions he's making...as a young manager he should be learning from some of these mistakes.
  2. This is probably your best point. Especially considering that Davis is getting old and probably doesn't have much hope to be a MLB regular or anything at this point. But Davis also hasn't seen MLB pitching, it probably makes more sense to take the guy who's proven he can do it in this case than gambling on a AA or AAA player.
  3. When the cubs miss the playoffs in 2020-2023 by a dozen games, let's again talk about how short-sighted moves are a good idea...
  4. I don't know how fast or how good of a runner Berry is. That ratio is not great. Your point about the track star is silly as you need someone with baseball instincts, stealing bases isn't only about speed. I could understand considering Wren or Dubon for this type of role, but the Brewers clearly thought Berry would be a better fit in this specific role. Maybe it is BS to some degree(I personally don't think so), many of us on this site understand the move though. Kyle Wren...26 steals...5 caught stealing. I see your point on Wren, in fairness Berry has 27 steals with 1 caught stealing in his MLB career. He's also stolen over 400 total bases in his baseball career. Looking strictly at the stats isn't enough though. Shaw has 9 steals and no caught stealing...should we have him be our running specialist?

  6. The cubs injury situation is starting to get to a critical stage. Last I read this morning, Russell had a setback and will miss another 3 weeks. Baez is day to day at best. That's both starting middle infielders, they are currently rolling with Zobrist and Freeman at 2b and ss with almost no SS depth. Contreras is on the shelf probably for another week. Arrieta just went down with a hammy, and I suspect they are downplaying it far more than they should be(how many guys make their next start after straining a hammy?). Lester just came back and didn't look all that sharp. All these injuries and lack of depth is a huge concern for them. They have 6 more games left before their next off day, and close the season with a tough 10 game road trip followed by 3 games at home against cincy to close the season. I'm feeling more optimistic about our divisional chances by the day.
  7. Berry is a lot faster than any of those guys. The point with Berry is to use him as a running replacement. He's also easy to take off the roster at the end of the season. Spot on. I doubt he even plays defense, he's getting a major league salary for 30 days because he has elite speed. Decent deal for him, he'll probably make more this month than he did the first 5. With all the close games we've been playing, he could be quite valuable. Down 1 or tied in the late innings, if someone can walk or get a single...in theory we put this guy in to steal second(and maybe 3rd) and give us a better chance to get the run home. At minimum, he'll be in the pitchers head and add that much pressure...and likely glide home with ease on anything extra bases.
  8. Wasn't all that hard of a call but this is the first thing I've gotten right all year so I would like to take credit. My next prediction is that Garza gets the Suter treatment and is pulled after 3 innings. Garza has been better when he's had extra rest. I'm hoping we can get a few good innings and counsel had a quick trigger on him. I fully believe he will, similar to suter. Line up jeffress and suter behind him...
  9. I'm very excited to see what Williams can do. That was the only recall that surprised me, I'm curious what his stuff looks like after 2 years off.
  10. It isn't really a question, the cubs could not come close to matching that offer. Not remotely close. Their top 7 or 8 prospects don't have that much value. That farm is approaching angels and Orioles territory of bad. This was a very good trade all around, with Detroit getting significantly more value overall.
  11. 18 and 10, giving us 88 wins(after we win today) and a playoff berth. Win 5 of 6 against pittsburgh and 2 of 3 against the nationals. 4 wins against chicago and cincy each, and 3 of the remaining 6 against miami and st louis.
  12. It would be far more fun to watch the cubs further gut their farm system and not make the playoffs as we take the division. But beating out the Rockies would be a nice consolation. And my point in mentioning Arizona is that yes they've separated themselves a bit, but them facing the Rockies means a Brewers win would gain ground on 1 of the 2. If Colorado get's hot, it's not like the wildcard becomes impossible because they'd likely be beating up on Arizona and putting them in a position for us to catch them.
  13. 3-3 against the Dodgers this season, and held them to 3 or fewer runs in five out of six. I like the team's chances. I think the Dodgers are cocky enough to think the Crew is a pushover... and the Crew could take them, especially if a Suter or Davies is red hot and the offense shows up. It is very unlikely that Suter would face a single batter in the post season if we make it.
  14. Many free agents of Garza's current caliber and age don't end up finding jobs at all or get picked up on minor league deals. The way he's pitched down the stretch, that is very likely. Perhaps, but at $5 million, he's still cheap considering the market. Not at all. Guys like Guerra/Suter can do what Garza can do for $600k. Why would someone pay him $5 million? And for the few teams with no farm system options, why would they pick Garza over a dozen other similar guys that would likely do it cheaper. The return we might get if all breaks perfectly doesn't outweigh the risk of having to cut him for nothing. We wouldn't get anywhere near the Lind return for Garza, we'd get the Swarzak return at best.
  15. If we take care of our business, we have a very good chance at either the wildcard or division. We control our own destiny against the cubs, but colorado and arizona play each other and the dodgers quite a bit. Also the Giants and Padres are both playing better, so those won't be layup drill victories. Step 1 is winning enough to get to 86-88 wins, the rest should work out 1 way or another.
  16. I'd keep Garza for garbage time, but try to package him in the off-season. Even with his 4.77 ERA, at only $5 million, he's still got some value. Granted, it's probably gonna be two or three low-level lottery tickets - about what Lind brought back in the 2015-2016 offseason - or he is a throw-in to a Keon Broxton deal. That $5 million option is really cheap considering how much free agents will cost. Many free agents of Garza's current caliber and age don't end up finding jobs at all or get picked up on minor league deals. The way he's pitched down the stretch, that is very likely.
  17. Yeah the Marlins would surely get him. Here's hoping though. Swap out nicasio for one of our lousy 3.
  18. I think suter probably has dibs on starting before Guerra at this point. I do suspect they saved his arm a bit for potential long relief in September. I'm curious how they'll balance aaa playoff run with mlb stretch run.
  19. I absolutely agree it should be considered. If he isn't claimed then what happens? I could see the 5th rotation spot kinda being a bullpen game. Maybe Suter starts and when his spot in the order comes up they go to Guerra or Jungmann. We would be maximizing our offense, utilizing our strength of quantity of starting pitching, and you could also have a super quick hook on any guy if he doesn't have it a given day. You could also opt to leave a starter in if he's on fire on a given day. Regardless, the main idea of using pinch hitters early in games and utilizing our quantity of AAA SP that can serve as long relief to get through that 5th rotation spot when needed would be an interesting strategy and could very well work.
  20. Gameday had that one just a hair off the inside corner. I feel like the Brewers are due about 100 more of those calls in our favor just based on the last 2 months...
  21. Yup. I especially liked the first changeup (Low outside to a RHH), after throwing a lot of fastballs inside, fastballs who come in across his body. That changeup with it's armside movement (Or perceived movement compared to the fastball) must be tough to deal with. Changeups were 81 and 84mph IIRC, compared to the 93-97 FB. Outstanding. Nice to know he has it. I would like to think throwing it more consistently as a starter next year leads to him being absolutely filthy.
  22. I'm not watching live, but Gameday says Hader struck out Voit on a changeup and got a called strike to the next guy on a changeup. Can anyone watching live confirm? Nice to see him throw a couple good ones.
  23. Just another reminder that literally every player we have that steps on the field at Colorado Springs swings a red hot bat there and it doesn't translate to the majors unless you want to believe that it helped Sogard (there are about 6 or 7 counter-examples that suggest Sogard was random). Well it might translate, and it might not. I can assure you that struggling hitting at AAA Colorado means with absolute certainty that you will struggle at the MLB level...see Susac. All things can be in your favor, you still have to hit and perform.
  24. I can't imagine we'll really have much of a choice who would start a wildcard game in reality. If we are a few games ahead in the wildcard, we almost certainly would have won the division. Wildcard would come down to the last game or two of the season and we'd likely start whoever's turn it is. The gap between Nelson and Davies right now isn't much...Davies has had some gems lately. Anderson is a bit further behind due to his time off but hopefully he'll get locked back in down the stretch here.
  25. 7 games for a chance at the division leaping over three teams to do so is pretty much out of it. The Brewers have a chance to basically knock the Cardinals out of it by beating them twice Tues and Weds of this week. Let the games begin! They have a chance to gain ground directly here by sweeping the Cubs. Here's hoping. I guess if I was the Pirates, I wouldn't want to trade a guy away for a small amount of salary savings and a nobody. Especially if I was one stretch of 8 wins in 10 games away from being in the hunt again. It's different for the mets who owe walker considerable $$ and had 0 chance at the playoffs. They also have guys they can give a look at 2b. At the point, the pirates can wait 3 days and give a look to any bullpen arms they want to give a shot to.
