  1. I see your point on Nelson, but the quality of pitching we will see for 6-7 innings for the 3-4 turns he'd have remaining is far different with Nelson than a grab bag of Garza/Guerra/Jungmann/Wilkerson/Jeffress. It's nice having extra arms to allow for quick hooks, but I'd rather those guys get paid to have a dance contest in the bullpen than throwing meaningful pitches. And that doesn't even consider any postseason potential. Davies/Anderson were pitching anyway. Woodruff(who's still very young) would have been our 4. Now he's going to be relied on to be our 3rd pitcher in any postseason game...and we really don't have a 4th one. And you don't get expanded rosters in playoffs. That also doesn't consider the risk that Nelson doesn't return fully to form from the injury. Shoulder injuries are worrisome to say the least.
  2. I'll chime in with my 2 cents. Perez - 2b Santana Braun Shaw Aguilar Pina Broxton Arcia
  3. If gun to my head, those were the 2 options, I guess I'd probably go Guerra. That's far more of an indictment on Garza though. and thankfully we have other options. Guerra might be stretched to throw 90 pitches, but he hasn't even thrown one good inning since getting back to the majors. Asking for 5 is a big stretch.
  4. If Counsell starts Garza, and it costs them a playoff spot in the long run, Counsell should lose his job!! Garza should not pitch again this year unless it is mop up innings one way or the other. He NEEDS to be done! Any managerial decision to start Matt Garza should cost that manager his job. Counsel lose his job...
  5. Yep. This is what it should be for the majority of games but for some reason if Villar plays, Sogard has to as well. People complain about Villar leading off but he's a better option there than Perez, Thames or Sogard. I'll agree with you here. Villar tends to see a lot of pitches, which is good in the leadoff spot. He has been better, and has game-changing speed. I think he's improved enough to be a good leadoff hitter down the stretch.
  6. Isn't that exactly what you are doing but on the other side of the argument? Of course, it is opinion, as is yours. And this is a message board, where opinions are okay to have. Unless that's a new board rule that we are not aware of. We give opinions basically in everything that we post. Done with the pissing match but please refrain from trying to curb my opinions, while giving your own on the message boards, please. Thanks. I'd say the team bounced back pretty well from not acquiring a starting pitcher upgrade. And if you follow the brewers beat writers among other publications, his point about the players having a great respect for Garza is accurate. Both of you guys have an opinion, he included some support for both of his opinions. I tend to agree with him. I know you were one of the people that thought the Brewers would tank mentally because we didn't acquire a SP. These players are professionals. They are paid big dollars to leave it all out on the diamond every day. If you watch the games, they have great attitudes pretty much all the time. They are also in the thick of a playoff chase and just swept the cubs in Wrigley. They are flying about as high as it gets right now, I can't imagine the choice of starting pitcher for one game is going to change that.
  7. Now I am sort of thinking we should just cheer for the Rockies and win the division so the Cubs miss the playoffs entirely. If this is the optimism thread then that is my optimal outcome. I like your line of thinking, I just can't root for the Rockies until I'm certain we have the division(if we get it). I'm more pro-Brewer than anti-Cub...if only by a slim margin.
  8. The goal is a neutral site, St Louis wouldn't be remotely neutral. Playing at a neutral site means almost by default that turnout won't be great. Unless they get creative and play in a southern state with a nice college stadium that doesn't have pro baseball. Texas and Houston played their neutral site series in tampa...which must have the worst attendance by far in all of baseball even when their team is playing. Based on that, Baltimore would make a ton of sense.
  9. .... what does the stock market have to do with whether or not a baseball series is moved? if the games stay in Miami they might be the lowest attended games in its history. Right. I have to imagine literally every single person in the Miami area has much better things to do right now than go to a baseball game.
  10. Agreed. Ideally move it to an AL venue. Without looking at schedules, maybe Baltimore or Cleveland? Or maybe play it at a larger AAA ballpark?
  11. This is spot on, I think any Suter day might have Jeffress piggy back for 2 innings instead of Hader depending on how many lefties in the lineup. I personally want to see Wilkerson get a couple starts. It absolutely cannot be Guerra, that guy is not an MLB quality pitcher. Garza seems likely but man that guy has not been able to keep runs off the board. I suspect it will be Garza and Suter down the stretch, but I'm really really hoping to see Wilkerson get a couple starts. Even if he's fairly lucky, if he were to have 3 good starts from an ERA standpoint at the MLB level to close the season...we could probably get some value in a trade.
  12. The bats started getting going too. First off, all the BB. Fantastic at bats most of the weekend. Shaw had 3 hits and 3 walks this weekend, Perez had 4 hits and a walk, Arcia 4 hits and 2 walks, Broxton 2 hits and 3 walks. Nice to see a few guys get something going on offense. This will be a tougher test as we have 3 games coming up with no Anderson or Davies, let's get the bats rolling at home and scratch out some more wins. Rockies head into Arizona to hopefully get swept in 4 games.
  13. The offensive environment is tough on cold nights in Chicago. The cubs had just as much trouble. I think aguilar gets a start tomorrow but only because of the lefty starter. I figure Perez or villar will start at 2nd for walker and everything else stays the same.
  14. Cubs were trying to coax counsel into pulling hader for ph.
  15. Many of our high end prospects are in their teens or very very early twenties. Patience.....
  16. As much as I've harped in this thread and others about shuffling the lineup like crazy, this is one of few times I generally agree with Counsel's lineup. The only weird thing is Thames leading off, and it might be in an effort to get in Lackey's head early and get him off his game. Lackey's childishness from earlier this season in regards to Thames is well documented.
  17. Don't any of you see how many of these early-mid 30s starting pitchers end up fizzling and disappearing after a season like this? Last year Jon Niese, Bud Norris, Ryan Vogelsong, Vance Worley, John Danks, Matt Latos, many more all signed minor league deals. Edwin Jackson, Tim Lincecum, Colby Lewis, Doug Fister, etc didn't even get deals right away. I didn't look into what contracts they signed for when they did finally sign, I assume they all signed on the cheap. This is likely where Garza is headed in free agency. Minor league deal, maybe he gets lucky and someone signs him for 1-2 million in a Tommy Milone type deal with bullpen as a fallback. I can't believe this is still being discussed.
  18. I know it isn't related, but on that same guys twitter he has a thing for hard hit ball leaders and Braun is in 2nd. He's having quite the unlucky season, as his K rate isn't THAT bad to offset being 2nd in baseball in hard hit rate.
  19. The Cubs are really playing up the "first Friday night game in Cubs history" story. I did not realize until I read it that they broke such a tradition to give them a competitive advantage this season. Anywho, looks like no Arrieta this series and we'll see Montgomery on Saturday(which should mean Aguilar gets a start). Santana is already heating up, I feel like Braun is going to wake up this series. All the booing he'll hear will motivate him in the best way possible. I feel like we have an advantage in starting pitching each of the 3 games. All good things.
  20. It wasn't all terrace tickets either. I jumped on this right at 9 am as I was planning on going to the game Monday anyways. They had loge outfield, bleachers, and terrace tickets available. I was able to get 2 loge outfield. Very cool indeed.
  21. I wonder if they've intentionally rested Thames for a few days to give him a chance to rest up a bit and get fresh again. He initially started regressing in May when he was sore/tired. Now that we have more options, it makes sense to give him some rest to get him fresh. You guys need to get off the sign walker to an extension bandwagon. It's highly highly unlikely. Villar is the heavy favorite for the starting gig in 2018, albeit with a shorter leash than this season.
  22. There is no CF in that lineup, and no I don't count Villar as one. That said I agree, quit trying to get cute/lucky by batting Perez first or putting Villar in CF. Set a lineup like we did in the first half. We are what we are, either the stability will help or it won't. Either way if the middle of the order doesn't wake up, it won't matter what the order is. Yeah I'm aware of the CF thing. I know he wants to keep Villar in there, if he's going to play Villar in CF then this should be the lineup. I personally think a more balanced lineup would be something like Villar/Walker/Sogard, Braun, Shaw, Santana, Thames, Pina, Broxton, Arcia, P. I also think Counsel should work to get Aguilar in the lineup a bit more often and stop playing Walker at 1b. That guy has single-handedly won us some games on days he starts.
  23. I know it looks like the cardinals have gotten hot...or something. They've won 5 of 6 against the giants and padres. 2 of the worst teams in baseball right now. I'm sure they'll come back down to earth when they start playing NL Central teams. The NL Central doesn't have any really bad teams right now...even cincy has a really strong lineup and improving pitching. They are playing much better than their record right now...not just against us. They are 19-16 since August 1st, and have been getting better and better...they'll be a tough test for all 3 divisional contenders down the stretch.
  24. I feel like Counsel needs to stop tinkering with the lineup immediately. Go back to a standard lineup, except maybe move Thames to 6th and have walker bat 2nd most days. Villar/Sogard, Walker, Braun, Shaw, Santana, Thames, Pina, Arcia. On days that Broxton starts in CF, move Thames back up to 2nd(Walker/Villar/Sogard lead off) and pina up one. Getting fancy with the lineup isn't going to do anybody any good. And don't listen to these people that are obsessed with sac bunting, stick to your guns. We didn't get to this point playing small ball and trying to scratch out a run here or there. Guys need to get back to a patient approach at the plate and working counts. That's the biggest thing I feel like I've noticed is generally less patience at the plate. Lately guys try swinging at every strike and not necessarily a good pitch to hit.
  25. The Brewers need to win 2 of 3 down the stretch to have a shot at getting in. The Rockies have an incredibly tough stretch coming up(4 in LA, 4 in AZ), so if we can pull 2 from the cubs and 2 from the pirates...we probably catch them within a week. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 NL Central teams get in at this point.
