  1. Burnes needs to take command and pitch like a Cy Young winner. No 50 pitches to get through 2 innings and no home runs to .150 hitting backup catchers. it shouldn’t be too much to ask for him to go at least 7 innings. It would also help if the offense could manage a couple of early runs to keep Burnes from thinking he has to be absolutely perfect to keep the team in the game. That seems to lead to nibbling, high early pitch counts, and short outings.
  2. You are really going out of your way to create an argument. I certainly know that teams can only play the teams on their schedule, and that the Brewers have lost more games against bottom feeders lately than a playoff contending team should. I never said that beating the Blue Jays doesn’t count as a win over a team over .500. I’m just referring to what should be obvious, and that is that teams that are 30 games over .500 are probably better than teams that are 5-10 games over .500. To put it simply, the fact that the Brewers have won series against the Jays, Twins, and Rays while losing series to the Cubs, Pirates, and Reds does not give me confidence that the Brewers will win more than they lose against the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees. The Brewers have been marking time for over 3 months, and to make the playoffs at some point they have to start winning more than they lose or hope the Cardinals go into a slide. I wouldn’t count on the latter given their favorable schedule.
  3. You’re trying to make a point by lumping all teams over .500 together. I’m putting teams like the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees in a different category than the Rays and Twins, and even the Jays, who have the same record as the Brewers.
  4. I wouldn’t assume that Helsley is done for the series. In fact, I would bet that if the Cardinals have a save situation on Sunday you’ll be seeing him. The Cardinals aren’t afraid to use their relievers for more than an inning. This was Helsey’s 15th multiple inning outing of the season, but he hadn’t pitched since Sunday. He threw 29 pitches tonight and should be ready again on Sunday. It wouldn’t be the first time he would pitch 2 innings and come back 2 days later.
  5. The Rays and Twins were two of the teams I mentioned that are barely over .500; they are not currently in a playoff position. The series the Brewers won against the Braves, Phillies, and Padres were in May, before those teams got going and before they improved themselves at the deadline. I’m pretty sure that the Jays series is the only series that the Brewers have won since May against a team that is currently in a playoff position.
  6. That was a pretty good preview of what I would expect to see from the Brewers offense in a playoff series.
  7. It’s one thing to beat teams that are barely over .500 like the Twins, Orioles, and Rays. But it can be something else again to beat teams that are 30 games over .500 like the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees. The Brewers need to both start winning again against the bad teams and hold their own against the good teams to stay in the playoff hunt. They have to expect that the Cardinals and Phillies will be beating up on the bad teams they play.
  8. I know this was raised earlier, but at the All Star break the schedule was set up perfectly to have both Burnes and Woodruff pitch the first two games of this series and the last two of the Dodgers series. I’m surprised they didn’t do that. Throwing two lefties against Goldschmidt and Arenado is not ideal
  9. It sure helps to have a couple of elite hitters in the lineup.
  10. The Cardinals 2 deadline pickups have thrown 23 innings and allowed 3 runs. And they’re 3-0 so far in the games they have started.
  11. Could see that coming a mile away with Lauer struggling with command.
  12. That was a big snatch back win to start chipping away at the damage done last week. Give the team some positive vibes heading into very challenging and potentially pivotal 13 games in 13 days.
  13. They play today and tomorrow so they won’t be all square without a postponement.
  14. Woodruff had had trouble the last couple of times he’s pitched into the seventh. Can’t afford that today.
  15. Starting to look like 2 runs might be it for today. Not much action since the first.
  16. Brosseau and Hiura show the value of making contact.
  17. The Brewers didn’t pick up a right handed hitting 1B at the deadline so the options are limited. Hiura hit an HR when he started against a LHP on Saturday so why not try it again.
  18. A good test for the Brewers against a solid lefty. It seems like this is one of the first times since the ASG that the Brewers have faced a starting pitcher with an ERA under 4.
  19. I think people who preferred having the Brewers build a park close to downtown don’t appreciate how important tailgating is to a lot of fans. Stuffing a ballpark downtown with an adjacent parking structure would have done nothing to improve attendance. A lot of people who come from outside the immediate Milwaukee area to go to a game would not be attracted by having to drive into the downtown area and find a place to park just to attend a game. People who want to attend a game with the family are not interested in a drinking and dining area nearby. To tell the truth, I’m not interested in that either. I just want to go to a game and then come home. As for San Diego, the only time I was in the city we spent most of the day visiting the zoo and the Air and Space Museum in that park. On the way out of town we wanted to see the ballpark and I was surprised that we had to navigate through a large tent city of homeless people within a block or so of the stadium. It didn’t leave me with the best impression.
  20. Hader blew a 3 run lead last night by walking 3 guys, hitting a batter, and giving up a hit. He had to be removed with 2 outs after throwing 37 pitches. He apparently doesn’t like the Giants. The Padres still won on a walk off by Machado in the last of the ninth.
  21. So the Brewers traded Hader and added a guy with a bum knee?
  22. Williams didn’t pitch Saturday, but it still would have been 4 times in 5 days.
