The Lou Gehrig Day tribute brings back a memory for me. On July 4;1964 we were at Yankee Stadium for a doubleheader between the Yankees and Twins. They had a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of Gehrig’s Luckiest Man speech with his widow on hand to throw out the first ball.

Just saw Corbin Burnes throw a pitch and immediately signal to the bench and cuss into his glove. It looked like he said,”It’s my oblique”. Could be a long absence for him.

Right. I will not conclude nothing is broken until they determine and announce that. So many small bones in that area that can be broken and cause problems. Now that he has been hitting it would really be a shame if he has to miss games in the Reds series. That’s a park where any ball hit in the air has a chance to be a homer, and yelich has flourished there.

A sweet sweep. No reason to apologize for Harper being out or missing Wheeler. The amazing thing is how the Brewers have contained the Phillies offense in Philly the last two seasons. Last year they were swept by scores of 3-1, 2-1, and 2-0 and this year the Phillies did little except for the garbage runs in the 9th yesterday.

No. Wilson isn’t the regular LF and Turner is generally very good.

I remember listening to that game. The Brewers trailed 7-0 in the third inning but rallied to tie it in the fourth. They put the game away with a 13 run fifth. The 22-2 win over Toronto also included the Brewers record of 31 hits

It’s not quite as risky when you leave in a pitcher who finished the previous inning than it is when you bring in a new pitcher to start the ninth and he has to face 3 batters. Just have to be ready with a quick hook. First time in quite awhile that the Brewers won on Friday. Have a chance now to win a road series against an opponent with a winning percentage over .320

Looks like Harper might be out all weekend too. He says he is still “super sore” after being drilled in his surgically repaired elbow by Spencer Steider.

I was thinking about this because it seems that the Brewers schedule since they played the Cubs in early May has been light on series against the better teams in MLB. I looked at MLB standings that ranked the teams 1- 30 based on their current W-L record and saw that the Brewers are 5–11 against teams in the top 10, 11-11 against teams in the middle 10, and 13-6 against teams in the bottom 10. The Brewers only series win against a team in the top 12 was the 2-1 series win over the Tigers in April. Their performance so far has really screamed “.500 team”. If they’re going to rise above that they’re going to have to start winning some series against better teams. They’ll get some shots at that the next few weeks.

The Brewers may have gotten a break because the Phillies were rained out on Wednesday and had to play 2 games yesterday. The Brewers will also miss Wheeler, who pitched yesterday. The teams may have some rain issues this weekend as heavy rain is expected on the East Coast

Of course I know that almost all teams have occasional outlier scoring outbursts, and that all teams go through hot and cold stretches. But the Brewers having outbursts of 11, 14, and 17 runs in their first 24 games had an outsized impact on their runs per game average. Through those 24 games they were tied for third in MLB with 125 runs (5.2 per game). But their average in the other 21 of those 24 games was just 3.95 runs per game which was probably a much more accurate reflection of the offense. I doubt if many other teams had their RPG impacted that much by 3 games. It's noy just the number of games scoring 10 runs or more. It's scoring 12 runs more than 10 runs per game. Of course the impact of those games gets diluted as more games are played. And I recognize that the offense in the last 5 weeks has had a truly putrid stretch along with periods of mere mediocrity. So, I agree that the offense will probably fall somewhere between the elite levels of the first 3 weeks and the horrific levels of the last 5. But ,if the goal is for the team to be better than slightly below average, I don't think this offense is going to cut it. Maybe the slightly elevated run production in the last ten days is a sign of a turnaroud. Or maybe it's a reflection of facing some of the worst teams in MLB.

I’m not going to try to figure that out but most low scoring teams don’t have games of 14 and 17 runs. The more important thing is that those games were all early in the season and over the ,last 5 weeks the offense has been undeniably one of the worst in MLB.

The Brewers are only in the middle of the pack in runs scored because of some of the extremely high scoring games in April. Since the last of those games against the Giants on April 22 the Brewers are 24th in runs scored.

Brewers won an extra inning game in the first home series against KC.

Or like about 50 other games, the Brewers have played in Pittsburgh with long rain delays.
