    The Brewers must be one of the only teams in MLB that faces Mikolas and is content trying to get into the bullpen. He’s now thrown 8 straight scoreless innings against the Brewers going back to his start in May.

    I commented after last night’s game that I was concerned about the “black holes” in the lineup (Mitchell, Black and, to a slightly lesser extent, Frelick). I think there were at least two times yesterday that Mitchell and Black failed with a runner on third and less than 2 out, and then Mitchell killed another scoring chance already today.

    Absolutely true, but my concern with Black, and Mitchell (and to some extent Frelick) is that the playoffs are coming in 6 weeks and having too many holes like that in the lineup is going to make it hard to score against the best pitchers on playoff caliber teams.

    My two cents on the Williams situation without too much second guessing is that I was surprised to see him warming up in the top,of the 9th. I thought that with a big lead in the division there would be no reason to push Willams into another game right after the number of high stress pitches he threw the night before. It seemed like a good opportunity to give Megill a shot at closing. I also think that after the high stress save on Tuesday Murphy should have been quicker with the hook than he might usually be once it was obvious that his command was significantly off. But my bigger, more concerning, thought of the night was what a PP has mentioned. That is that Mitchell and Black are proving to be complete dead spots in the batting order. Their almost automatic outs were not as much of a problem last night because others stepped up. But it’s looking like the Brewers might regret not making a Canha type pickup at the deadline. It doesn’t help that Frelick is only slightly better.

    No, not really. He could have been used in a low leverage situation or an emergency like an extra inning game.

    Not for me. Plenty more opportunities for the Dodgers to lose. Don’t give the Cardinals any breath.

    Brewers scored just 28 runs in the last 9 games of the homestand and still went 6-3.

    By the same token, if the focus is the Dodgers, the Brewers would have to fend off the Padres and DBacks too. They currently lead the Padres by 1.5 games and the DBacks by 2.5. Those 2 teams have been by far the best in the NL since the beginning of June. The Padres hold the tiebreaker over the Brewers, having won the season series 5-2 I look at the chase for the bye as two separate races. One is against the Phillies and the other is against the 3 NL West teams. The Brewers have to win at least one of them. If you’re looking ahead, the last couple weeks of the season could be interesting. In their last 16;games the Brewers play all 7 of their games against the DBacks, 3 against the Phillies, and 3 against the Mets, who are also fighting for a wild card spot.

    The longer term vibe has been more like treading water. The Brewers first reached 17 games over .500 on July 2 at 52-35 and have gone 18-17 since then.

    Fun night at the ballpark last night. We had exchanged tickets for a Cubs game on our 10 pack for last night. I was reminded how much I enjoy the new schedule that adds games against teams like the Guardians (and a future HOFer) like Jose Ramirez instead of still another series against the Pirates, Reds, Cubs, or Cardinals.

    The Tigers at 59-63 would be just 1.5 games out of second in the NL Central and have the same record as the Cubs. The White Sox are historically terrible, but the rest of the AL Central is better than the NL Central..

    I agree. I think it’s bad form to pull out things from game threads and throw them in someone’s face. But, there are posters who seem to thrive on doing that.

    I would say it’s more like 3 Hall of Famers and 2 current All Stars (Smith and Hernandez). And when they add Muncy that’s another All Star caliber hitter

    It has been apparent for some time that this is where this situation was headed.

    If I had to come up with one sentence to describe my reaction to this series this might be it. Especially today, until the 8th inning rally, I was stewing over the general lack of offense, including some really awful at bats in scoring situations. I just about lost it when Frelick hacked at a high inside pitch against a pitcher who had just walked two batters, including the previous one on 4 pitches. Same feeling when Adames chased a 2-0 pitch about a foot outside with the bases loaded and none out in the 8th. Then there were the defensive and base running mistakes that can be fatal against anyone, not just one of the league’s best teams. Hopefully the young players will learn from and grow from this series. At times they looked like a team that was playing tight, and that won’t work in the playoffs or if they get challenged in the division race.

    I apologize. I didn’t realize you can read my mind If you look at my response at the time I didn’t say that I disagreed with Megill having an opportunity to close, but just that it was a decision to be made later based on circumstances at the time. Regardless I generally don’t appreciate being called a liar, though I do consider the source.

    Yikes. Elvis. Had to make a move there but he makes me nervous. I have a feeling this is going to be no runs or 4.

    I didn’t like having Turang run with Chourio already down 0-1. He swung at a ball well off the plate, possibly trying to,protect the runner, and that put him on the defensive for the rest of the AB.

    This better not be one of those games where the Brewers put up a couple of early runs and then shut down the offense for the rest of the game. They’re not winning 3-2.

    The error was on the next play, not Ortiz’s throw that eluded Hoskins.

    That inning largely erased the good feeling from the first.

    It always interesting to see how different people can see the exact same words and have a significantly different interpretation of them. When I saw the comment about Megill “earning the opportunity” to remain the closer I didn’t take it as saying Megill should be handed the closer role even after Williams was ready to go. My general reaction was to not worry about what might happen several weeks in the future unless and until a decision has to be made. As it turns out there never was a decision to be made because of Megill landing on the IL.
