A couple of weeks before that game I looked at the schedule and saw that the Brewers had a long road trip after. I thought Yount might be reaching 3000 about then and if he didn’t he’d probably get it on the road trip.
I worked for a banking organization that had about 40 season tickets that they let employees request if they weren’t being used by anyone to entertain customers. So, I put in for 4 and got some box seats not far behind the Brewers dugout.
About a week before it didn’t look he’d be getting to 3000 by then, but he suddenly got 7 hits in 4 days and was only 3 away going into a Labor Day game against the Indians. So, I went to that game where he got 2998, then again the next night where he got 2999 in the first inning, but went hitless the rest of the game.
So I went to the next game with 3 work colleagues and,, after a rain delay and two hitless ABs, we had great seats for the big moment.
And it wasn’t long before that (maybe the year before) that we saw Nolan Ryan get his 300th win against the Brewers.
