  1. My guess is that the managers see this as an opportunity for themselves to make impressions. A healthy win-loss record always looks good for a manager trying to find his first big league break. Also, if it's considered to be a "finishing school" for prospects on the cusp of the Majors, they might as well play it as close to Major League style as possible. This is all just speculation, though. I'm certainly no insider to the AFL.
  2. The Mesa Desert Dogs just outscored the previously undefeated Saguaros by a total of 23-2. Now that's domination.
  3. Deer is listed as the Bench Coach, not the Batting Coach. Then again, there's no bench coach listed, so I don't know if this means anything or makes you feel any better. When it comes to batting approaches, I'd take Rod Carew over Rob Deer any day, but given Carew's short tenure, I'd probably try out Deer before Carew again as a coach. Just saying that performance doesn't always correlate to coaching style.
  4. I'd still like to see an organizational depth chart by position, as detailed a while ago. Here's a link to that thread: Organizational Depth Chart Also, I think we need a comprehensive injury report for all the hurting players in the organization. Just a list of injured players with details such as nature of the injury, DL status, estimated time of return, etc. would be outstanding. Maybe even links to articles that talk about the injury. We could also have an injury watch that lists players just coming off an injury, players nursing a sore hammy, Jenkins when he gets hot, etc.
  5. It sure would have been nice if the MWL would have taken a day off between the semifinals and the finals. Then the Snappers could have moved Sarfate up a day so that there's no chance Lansing can win without even facing our ace.
  6. We should have known. As soon as Jenkins gets hot, Jenkins gets hurt. I hope Doug and Ulice keep this in mind when talking contract extension.
  7. We should have known. As soon as Jenkins gets hot, Jenkins gets hurt. I hope Doug and Ulice keep this in mind when talking contract extension.
  8. Raburn looks like he will be a solid utility player, but not much more. I hope you mean a solid minor league utility player, because he's a 165 pound 24 year old with no position who's slugging .323 in A ball. I doubt you'll ever see him in Milwaukee or any other Major League city. His speed could get him a roster spot, but that's about it.
  9. Doug Davis? Wow, Milwaukee must be getting desperate.
  10. A run scored when Sexson hit into what appears to be a reverse double play. Pursuant to Rule 10.04(b), a player is not credited with a RBI if he hits into a fielder's choice double play or reverse double play. I've been in a meeting. First, what happened on the play in question? Second, what the hell is a reverse double play? Is that when the first baseman touches first and throws to second for the tag? p.s. According to Yahoo!, he was credited with the RBI.
  11. With Gold joining Saenz and Petty, there are now three notable pitchers in the High Desert rotation. Not that any of them have had great seasons, but at least there's a reason not to skip over the Mavericks box score three days out of five.
  12. Your already ahead, if your tossing a non pitcher out there your odds of 1 or 2 runs scoring are much less than zero scoring plus more than 2. I've read this sentence about nineteen times now and I have no idea what it means.
  13. I wonder how much the hourly rate for the agent is. I assume he'll get paid comparably to a commission agent. Let's just say Week's signs for $4 mil. At 15%, a commission agent would make $600,000 (plus a cut of the future salary, right? I don't know.) So if this guy puts in 100 hours of work (a completely uneducated shot in the dark), then he'd have to make around $6,000 per hour to make the same amount of money. Hot damn, that equates to $100 a minute. I'm in the wrong biz.
  14. I think the Brewers are waiting for Tampa Bay to sign Delmon Young, so that they can work out a deal worth slightly less than what Young gets. If they take too long, however, maybe the Brewers and Rickie will get gutsy and ink a deal anyway.
  15. The way I read it, it's "only" $4 mil. I think the $800k is the total over the next four years, averaging $200k per year. Either way, he's filthy rich.
  16. From this week's TopProspectAlert Weekly, under the Cold List: 9. Matt Harrington, RHP, no team: Could be drafted for a third time this year. Turned down more than $5 million from Colorado in 2000 as the No. 7 pick and now can't even get $500,000. 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA pitching for the Fort Worth Cats of the independent Central Baseball League. How pathetic.
  17. Loewen's price tag has been rumored as high as $6 million. $6 million? Last year he wanted $4 mil and couldn't get it. Has he really improved his stock that much from last year to this year? In my opinion, he had a good but not great year. He should be thrilled to get the $4 mil he wanted from Baltimore. I'm hoping this is just a PR rumor to see if he can drive up his price tag. Otherwise, I could see him falling in the draft. Coughing up $6 mil for Loewen would have to mean leaving other important picks unsigned.
  18. BELOIT: Idle Bumbling idiot it is.
  19. I did miss it. Thanks, MB. I declare today is the day Prince defunks himself and Huntsville wins. Unless either team doesn't play today, in which case I'm a bumbling idiot.
  20. My memory has never been likened to a mousetrap, but is this not three straight days without a win in the minor leagues? What's the deal?
  21. I'm now a huge Joe Lawrence fan. He can play all eight positions, and walks that much? I'd hand him a spot as my 25th man at the beginning of the Spring. Harold already touched on this, but at the Major League level, if he continued to hit .204, no pitcher would ever throw him a ball again. And then his OBP would be equal to his BA.
  22. I guess at this point, until Krynzel shows me something different, I'm looking at him as a potential left-handed Rickey Henderson. Allow me to interpret: "a potential left-handed Rickey Henderson" = "a potential left-handed Greatest Lead Off Hitter of All Time." I know what you mean, but let's be careful with the comparisons. I'd be thrilled if he only turned out to be a left-handed Steve Finley or Paul O'Neil. (It's sad that I'm afraid that if I don't add an emoticon, no one will understand that "left-handed" was meant to be a joke in this case. Is this the state of modern American letters? Will our greatest novelists start using http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif and http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif in their greatest works? Woe is me.)
  23. Yikes. He's 6'6"; I'll update that. Nice catch. Well, I must say this drastically improves my opinion of him. I'd always thought he was 6'1". But I don't care if he's 3'8" if he keeps throwing goose eggs.
  24. And yet even the "moderate" claim that "he'll be a pretty good #3 starter" is a bit overzealous in my mind. He's had three good starts. Let's not get carried away. After all, he's only once in his professional career had an ERA under 5. I hope, as everyone here does, that he can remain healthy and productive, but to assume he'll be a pretty good #3 starter after three games defines "jumping the gun." By the way, the SportsTicker blurb that MassBrew posted (as well as the Huntsville web site) list Martinez at 6'6", while his player profile page here lists him at 6'1". Which is it?
