  1. Found a nice surprise in this eMusic interview with Indie Rock pioneer Stephen Malkmus (formerly of Pavement). Lots of surprisingly knowledgeable Brewer talk. http://www.emusic.com/features/spotlight/2008_03-qa-malkmus.html
  2. I've been thinking the Brewers could use this new rule to their advantage. By drafting someone who's not likely to sign at slot, the Brewers could essentially spread the wealth of draft picks into next year. Instead of four extra picks this year, they could have three this year and up to three (if Sheets is type A and signs elsewhere) next year. Spreading it out might make it easier to sign everyone they want to sign, and may alleviate the need to make any signability picks.
  3. Remember that the Brewers have rewarded Rivera with at least some big league time in each of the last two years--before that his last Major League appearance was in '03--so he might be content to be the third string catcher again knowing that there's a good chance of a call up. While he didn't hit much in AAA last year, his '06 was good enough that I hope he sticks around.
  4. Well, Jeffress was on the roster, so it seems odd that they'd hold Salome out simply because of his suspension. You're right that he could have been there unofficially, though.
  5. Notably absent from the list is Angel Salome. With him being removed from the Hawaii roster and not going to Instructs, I think it's fair to speculate that something's going on. Could be an injury. Could be some sort of team imposed suspension on top of his suspension...
  6. I don't mean to pick on Angel, but doesn't it seem weird that you can be suspended and still play in the Hawaiian Winter League? I would expect suspensions to apply there (and in the Arizona Fall League). Are the the fall and winter leagues not run by Minor League Baseball?
  7. Congratulations to Matt LaPorta on what I believe is his first professional game without a strike out. The plate discipline was about to become a concern, but it looks like he's turning it around. Up to 5 walks now in 57 ABs.
  8. One thing to keep in mind is that if the drugs he took truly enhanced his performance, his performance could take a nosedive once he's clean. Not to mention the fact that he won't be able to see live pitching or catch in a game for seven months or so. He might never be the same. And when it comes to Power 50 placement, which is at least partly based on past performance, you have to ask yourself whether or not he truly earned all the numbers he's put up.
  9. Unless there's a ton of money from the Major League franchise, I don't think there's any motivation for Schmidt to replace the Mallards with a minor league team. Attendance is about as good as it can possibly get. No one cares about the baseball on the field. In fact, I think people would still go even if there was no game. So adding better baseball wouldn't really make a difference because it's all about the bar atmosphere for the adults and the crazy promotions for the kids.
  10. I think opening day 2009 is too early to expect LaPorta. I'd guess he'd be on the Braun/Weeks track: play the rest of this year in West Virginia, split next year between Brevard and Huntsville, and then open '09 in AAA with an opportunity to earn a midseason callup. It's true that LaPorta had an extra year of college, but one of those years was injury-riddled and we have to teach him a new position. I'd be thrilled if he's ready mid-2009.
  11. To those calling for Inman's promotion, remember that Gallardo made 13 starts and pitched 77.2 innings in Brevard County before being promoted last year. While they're different pitchers, I think it's obvious they're on the same timeline right now. Inman will earn his promotion after two or three more starts. In the meantime, enjoy the dominance.
  12. And who's the ice coldest of them all? Vinny Rottino. Going 0 for his last 20 has dropped his AVG a solid 50 points. Good thing he got off to a good start.
  13. Do we really need to keep posting every day that Braun remains out? The assumption is that he's out. The news will be when he comes back. There's no point announcing every day that the status quo hasn't changed.
  14. I've already found my Album of 2007: The Twilight Sad - Foureen Autumns & Fifteen Winters Oh, it's so good. I mentioned their EP earlier in this thread and the full length lives up to all my grandiose expectations. I can't imagine anything else coming along and trumping this album for my personal best of the year. Also diggin' on: The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse Hard to ignore the Brian Wilson comparisons on the vocal harmonies, but it's still got that indie feel. Panda Bear - Person Pitch Like the Besnard Lakes only more Brian Wilson-y. And more trippy. In other news, how about the new Modest Mouse? Meh. And the new Ted Leo? Also meh. The new Do Make Say Think and Explosions In The Sky are good but not great. Same for the new Bloc Party and Arcade Fire. I have to say I've been a little disappointed in '07, not including, of course, The Twilight Sad.
  15. 3B Ryan Braun P Yovani Gallardo P Will Inman P Jeremy Jeffress OF Lorenzo Cain Wow, that's exactly my top five from January's fan poll. I'm pretty impressed with myself. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. The Cards' 2010 lineup is almost exactly the same as their 2007 lineup. While that speaks partly to the quality of their current big leaguers, it's also a gigantic diss on their farm system.
  17. Stars: Set Yourself on Fire Awesome indie pop music out of Canada. Awesome, indeed. Stars are one of those bands who should've taken over the world by now. They're definitely poppy enough to be mainstream and their mini-symphonic flourishes keep you interested after many listens. Sure, some songs are too saccharin to take seriously, but there are plenty of masterpieces to overcome the occasional flops.
  18. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Huntsville a good pitchers park as well? Yeah, Huntsville is also a tough place to hit, but it's not as dramatic as BC, which is to hitters what High Desert is to pitchers.
  19. Since there have been a couple knocks on Cain, I'll just throw some Lorenzo love out there. I think he's going to emerge as a top prospect in the next couple years. It's hard to break out in Brevard County, where he'll probably be this year, so his numbers might not jump until he reaches Huntsville. But he's a toolsy guy who's improving quickly. The only thing he's missing right now is a little power, which usually develops late. I listed Cain at #5 on my top prospect submission a month ago. I think he's one of our most underrated prospects.
  20. I don't have a link or anything, but I think I remember reading that his velocity has dropped into the 80s. Combine that with the lackluster K rate and you have a very forgettable prospect. I hope I'm wrong about the loss of velocity--or that it was only temporary--but I don't plan on ever seeing Mike in Milwaukee.
  21. Sufjan Stevens - Songs for Christmas I don't think you can rank this without hearing the last disc. Sister Winter is probably my favorite Christmas song ever. In fact, I think most of the originals are really good, like That Was The Worst Christmas Ever, Hey Guys! It's Christmas Time!, and Did I Make You Cry On Christmas. The covers mostly don't add anything to previous versions, though. The best strategy is to queue up all the originals and leave off the covers. That would probably make a pretty good album, Christmas or not. So while I just said you can't rank this without hearing the last disc, 2.5 is probably accurate since half the songs (the originals) are good and half (the covers) are just fluff.
  22. Asobi Seksu - Citrus I really wasn't expecting this to be very good, but it's awesome. The My Bloody Valentine comparisons are inescapable, but I also hear a touch of The Cure. But with a female Japanese singer. The Twilight Sad - EP Scottish rockers who can't help but implode all their songs with crashing guitars. Wonderfully grandiose. If their forthcoming full length release lives up to this potential, 2007 will be a great year for music indeed. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder I'm not sure if this is better than their incredible debut album, but if you liked that, you'll like this. It's a little slower overall, but still really catchy and full of Alec's unmistakable vocals and quirky instrumentation.
  23. Projections are just math with some guessing involved That's the most confusing statement I've heard in a long time. While it's true that projections are a combination of numbers and guesses, I don't understand what you're trying to say. If you're saying that they're not important, I'd argue that projecting performance is the single most important job of a Major League front office, since it's how you decide personnel. If you're saying that they're not accurate enough to be significant, I'm sure the statheads can supply plenty of evidence to the contrary. In a community projection like this, it's just interesting to see how Rickie is perceived by the masses.
  24. Oh, and Toby, by projecting Nix in AAA, are you implying that he'll be put on waivers and clear them? I'd love to see that happen, but it seems unlikely to me.
  25. When was the last time that a MLB club, the AAA and AA affilates all made the playoffs? Looks like the Brewers got a legit shot at it. If Toby is mostly right on the AA squad, I think it looks pretty much like a wasteland. While guys like Palmisano and Moss could rebound in their repeat seasons, and while Fermaint, Katin, and Iribarren should be at least decent, there will be a lot of goose eggs on the scoreboard. And a rotation that includes Parra, Jones, and Hinton would be full of 4 and 5 inning starts, and that's assuming Parra and Jones can stay healthy. However, I do think Perez will start off in AA with Escobar repeating A+, which would probably improve the team in the short term. And there's always the chance that Inman and Gamel do for the '07 team what Gallardo and Braun did for the '06 team.
