  1. Mudcats allow two homers in 5-3 loss Lucas Erceg was 1-for-3 with a two-run double for Carolina By Carolina Mudcats | July 21, 2017 11:24 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/1/4/224474714/cuts/414_Lucas_Erceg_RBI_Single_wsnqhxer_bzjxizxv.jpg The Mudcats managed only 3 hits off 3 Astros pitchers. Trey Supak (4 1/3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K) started and got a no decision when the Mudcats rallied to tie the game. He gave up another gopher ball today. He has had only one appearance with Carolina in which he has not given one up. Conor Harber (3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K) followed and took the loss surrendering a two run home run that put the Mudcats behind for good. Eric Hanhold worked the final inning. Lucas Erceg had a two run double in 3 official at bats. Cooper Hummel drew two walks. Isan Diaz committed his 18th error of the year. Monte Harrison was 0-4 but had only one of the Mudcats' 15 strike outs. Harrison is one of only 6 players in all of the minors to have both 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases at this point of the season. No hits or walks for Trent Clark tonight but his stat line in the second half is pretty good: .313 BA, .455 OBP, .604 SLG, 1.049 OPS. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 4th Troy Stokes Jr. flies out to right fielder Myles Straw. Corey Ray walks. With Jake Gatewood batting, throwing error by Forrest Whitley on the pickoff attempt, Corey Ray to 3rd. Jake Gatewood strikes out swinging. Isan Diaz walks. Monte Harrison grounds out, shortstop Anibal Sierra to first baseman Spencer Johnson.
  2. Clark hits two triples in 8-3 series opening loss The Mudcats lost a 3-0 lead in the fifth to the Astros By Carolina Mudcats | July 20, 2017 10:57 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/5/6/226387256/cuts/16x9_TrentClark_x36l8a79_6iprm269.jpg Carolina got out to an early 3-0 lead and then fell apart. Kodi Medeiros (6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K) got the start and most of the damage was done against him in the 5th inning. The triple he gave up was a ground ball down the 3rd base line that went into the corner. Luke Barker and Scott Grist each gave up 2 runs in relief. Trent Clark (2-4, 2 3B) lead the way on offense. One of his outs was a long fly caught on the warning track in centerfield. Jake Gatewood had an opposite field home run in 4 at bats. Corey Ray (2-5) and Isan Diaz (1-2, 2 BB) also chipped in. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 2nd Jake Gatewood homers (11) on a fly ball to right field. Lucas Erceg walks. Monte Harrison strikes out swinging. 3. To play the devil's advocate, Lind is producing 0.7 WAR for the Nationals this year for not much above the league minimum salary. So far the Brewers have zero WAR out of the guys they got for him.
  4. It is against the South Bend Shovel Slayers, a Cubs affiliate. Never too early to beat the Cubs.
  5. Mudcats blanked 1-0 in series finale loss Jordan Yamamoto allowed just one unearned run and struck out seven in the loss By Carolina Mudcats | July 18, 2017 3:18 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/7/0/235500270/cuts/Yamamoto_1_en42wt4i_uhcf619n.JPG Here's some flavor of the game from the game story: The Mudcats left nine men on base and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Raudes left two on in both the fourth and fifth innings and Boyd stranded three in the seventh and one in the eighth before pitching a three up, three down ninth. Boyd earlier escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh after striking out Monte Harrison to end the frame and left Corey Ray at third after getting Lucas Erceg to pop out to end the eighth. Erceg's pop up nearly fell for a hit, but was snagged by Salem's Jeremy Rivera with a sliding, over-the-shoulder, catch in shallow left. Jordan Yamamoto (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) was the hard luck loser when an error by Isan Diaz led to the game's only run. Yamamoto has maybe the best command of the remaining Mudcats' starters. I especially like that he can spot his curveball to either side of the plate rather than just throwing it down the middle. Wuilder Rodriguez worked the eighth walking one and striking out two while lowering his ERA under 1.00 at 0.99. 6 hits and 5 walks for the Mudcats but no runs. Trent Clark (2-3, 2B, BB) was caught twice trying to steal which didn't help. Jake Gatewood and Luis Aviles were each 1-3 with a walk. Max McDowell was 2-3 with a double. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log What could have been: Carolina Top of the 7th Pitching Change: Logan Boyd replaces Roniel Raudes. Lucas Erceg grounds out, second baseman Jose Sermo to first baseman Josh Ockimey. Luis Aviles walks. Max McDowell doubles (11) on a line drive to left fielder Mike Meyers. Luis Aviles to 3rd. Jose Cuas strikes out swinging. Trent Clark walks. Monte Harrison strikes out swinging. Carolina Top of the 8th Corey Ray walks. Jake Gatewood singles on a line drive to center fielder Tate Matheny. Corey Ray to 2nd. Isan Diaz grounds into a double play, second baseman Jose Sermo to first baseman Josh Ockimey. Corey Ray to 3rd. Jake Gatewood out at 2nd. Lucas Erceg pops out to shortstop Jeremy Rivera.
  6. Harrison hits grand slam in 8-5 victory Harrison was 2-for-4 with a grand slam and two stolen bases in Salem By Carolina Mudcats | July 17, 2017 11:51 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/5/8/231791658/cuts/16x9_MarcosDiplanRJHennessy_Photography_m9pnbiwa_9fmf8nev.jpg With two outs and two men on base in the 1st inning, Jose Sermo took a routine ground ball from Lucas Erceg and dropped it as he was transferring the ball from glove to throwing hand. Monte Harrison (2-4, HR, 2 SB) then hit a grand slam which made the score 5-0 and the game was well in hand for the Mudcats. Corey Ray (2-5, 2 2B) chipped in with a pair of doubles. Marcos Diplan (6 2/3 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K) was on his game with good command of all his pitches until he tired a bit late in his start. Parker Berberet (2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K) followed Diplan on the mound. Nate Griep recorded the final out of the game in relief of Berberet. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Top of the 1st Trent Clark grounds out, first baseman Josh Ockimey to pitcher Shaun Anderson. Troy Stokes Jr. strikes out swinging. 7. Mudcats fall 5-4 in 12 on Ockimey walk-off blast The Mudcats forced extras with a two-out run in the ninth, but lost 5-4 in 12 on Sunday By Carolina Mudcats | July 16, 2017 6:28 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/3/2/231792332/cuts/16x9_JakeGatewood_lyjdpd82_7w2brkn4.jpg Josh Ockimey hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the 12th to walk off for the Red Sox. The Mudcats tried to sneak a 4th inning out of Brad Kuntz (3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K) who took the hard luck loss on the only hit he gave up in the game. Frank Lopez gave up 3 runs in 5 innings of work as the starter. Luke Barker and Eric Hanhold pitched the middle innings. The Mudcats came back twice to tie the game including a two out, nobody on base rally in the 9th. Corey Ray pinch hit with 2 outs in the 9th and drew a walk. Trent Clark (1-5) then knocked him in on a close play at the plate when his flare dropped in along the left field line. Isan Diaz (2-4, 2B, HR, BB) and Cooper Hummel (1-4, HR, BB) both homered. Throw out all the stats for the right hand hitters in this game. The umpire's strike zone was so ridiculous when Mike Shawaryn was in that they really had no chance. Balls were thrown beyond the white line marking the left handed batter's box which were called strikes, even if they were around the ankles. Shawaryn throws from the extreme 3rd base side of the rubber and the umpire was setting up way over behind the hitters. I don't think he could see much of those pitches. The Red Sox manager was thrown out for arguing balls and strikes so I guess he didn't like all the calls either. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Mudcats tie the game: Carolina Top of the 6th Pitching Change: Marc Brakeman replaces Mike Shawaryn. Jake Gatewood hit by pitch. 8. Harber tosses gem in 4-1 Carolina victory Conor Harber started and took a no-hitter into the sixth on Saturday By Carolina Mudcats | July 15, 2017 9:08 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/7/4/242293074/cuts/16x9_Harber_4t1woajm_1enb868f.jpg Conor Harber (6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K) started for the Mudcats and took a no-hitter until 2 outs in the 6th inning. He commanded the ball much better than I have seen him in the past. Mainly he threw 2 seam fastballs with an occasional changeup or curve ball thrown in. To me, it seemed like there was less run and more sink in his fastball today. That might be something he has been working on. Trey Supak (3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K) pitched the last 3 innings picking up his first save of the year. He gave up a home run with 2 outs in the ninth to allow the only run against the Mudcats in this game. The Mudcats had only 6 hits in the game but 5 were in the 5th inning and proved to be all they needed. Monte Harrison (1-4, 2B) and Max McDowell (1-3, 2B) led off the 5th with back-to-back doubles to score the first run of the game. Trent Clark (1-4, SB) knocked in McDowell with a single. Jake Gatewood (1-3, BB) finished the inning with a two out, two run single. Troy Stokes Jr (1-3, BB, 2 SB) stole 2 bases and Trent Clark had one. Scott Grist (4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 5 K) allowed an inherited run to score and couldn't hold down the Wood Ducks for the remainder of his day. Brad Kuntz pitched the final 2/3 of an inning yielding one hit. Lucas Erceg (2-4, 2B, HR) was about the only highlight at the plate. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 and drove in a run. 15. Mudcats open home series with 7-3 victory McDowell & Harrison combined for 7 RBIs in home win By Carolina Mudcats | July 12, 2017 3:44 PM ET Brett Martin was the starter for Down East today and he is rated between 5 and 10 in the Rangers' list of prospects depending on whom you talk to. He retired the first 5 batters of the game. In the second inning, after falling behind to Jake Gatewood (1-3, 2B, BB) 3-0, he struck him out on 3 straight fastballs. Lucas Erceg (1-4) then also struck out and it appeared Martin might be tough to hit today. Then Isan Diaz came up, and it was mentioned by Greg Young during the at bat, he had a very good at bat which really changed the game. Diaz (1-3, 2B, BB) fouled off 8 pitches during a 14 pitch at bat. Finally, he lined a double to the gap in left center. Monte Harrison (2-4, HR, 4 RBI, SB) then followed with a single to score Diaz. Max McDowell (2-3, HR, 3 RBI, SB) then followed with his first home run of the year to make it 3-0 before Martin knew what hit him. Harrison and McDowell combined to get all 7 of the Mudcats' RBIs. Marcos Diplan (6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 3 K) got his second quality start of the year. He has now given up 10 home runs this year compared to 7 all of last year. Luke (not Len, wrong century) Barker (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) looked very good in relief. The only hit he gave up was a seeing eye grounder between Gatewood and Diaz. Nate Griep worked the 9th yielding a walk and a hit batsman before retiring the side. Monte Harrison now has a 6 game hitting streak with a bunch of games missed in the middle. Trent Clark was 0-4 today but had an OBP of .530 in the second half going into today so let's give him a mulligan on that. Trent Clark is developing quite a split in L vs R. He has BA of .190 vs .269, OBP of .352 vs .405 and SLG of .290 vs .463 on the season. Isan Diaz is slightly better against lefties and Lucas Erceg is about the same. Wood Duck starter Martin is a lefty. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 2nd Jake Gatewood strikes out swinging. Lucas Erceg called out on strikes. Isan Diaz doubles (17) on a line drive to center fielder Matt Lipka. Monte Harrison singles on a ground ball to center fielder Matt Lipka. Isan Diaz scores. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Cody Ponce (3 1/3 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K) just didn't have it tonight. He couldn't get his breaking stuff over at all and suffered the consequences. Brad Kuntz (3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) continues his strong run out of the bullpen. The tying run came in in the 7th after a dropped 3rd strike and a wild throw by Cooper Hummel put a runner on 2nd. Wuilder Rodriguez (3 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) lowered his ERA to 1.09 on the year with Carolina. Frank Lopez served up the grand slam by Zack Collins to take the loss. Trent Clark (2-3, 2 2B, 2 BB) continues to rake and leads the Carolina league in OPS in the 2nd half. Jake Gatewood was 2-5. A combined two hit shutout, everybody in the lineup with at least one hit, a home run, two triples, two doubles, 4 stolen bases and a partridge in a pear tree. Trey Supak (8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) threw 93 pitches in the 8 innings, 58 for strikes. This is the first game for Carolina I've seen in which he had command of his fastball from the start. Wuilder Rodriguez worked a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off. Trent Clark (1-4, 3B, 2 BB, SB) looked much better in centerfield today. Yesterday I was wondering if he could continue there as he was having a lot of problems but he was quite good on his reads today. Troy Stokes Jr. (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, SB) had another excellent day. Jake Gatewood had a double and an RBI in 5 trips to the plate. Isan Diaz was 1-3 with 2 walks. Cooper Hummel was 1-2 with 3 walks. Jose Cuas had a long triple and Brandon Diaz a double. Two of the three hits were fly balls that could have been caught. Troy Stokes Jr lost one in the twilight and Trent Clark mis-played the other. Unfortunately, both happened in the 2nd inning when Winston-Salem scored all three of their runs off Medeiros. Quintin Torres-Costa (2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K) took the loss in relief. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) The Mudcats rallied for 3 in the 4th inning to take the lead 3-2 but gave it back in the 6th and couldn't score any more runs. Marcos Diplan (5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K) took the loss. He put 2 men on in the 6th, both of whom scored when Frank Lopez (2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K) came in.
