Mudcats survive, win 7-5 on Wednesday night Lucas Erceg hit a two-run homer and Corey Ray had a three-run triple on Wednesday night By Carolina Mudcats | May 17, 2017 11:24 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/1/8/230835018/cuts/16x9_Clark_06p200dn_88fur6as.jpg The combination of Jordan Yamamoto (3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K) and Kodi Medeiros (5 2/3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 6 K) took a no hitter into the 6th inning before yielding a single. Medeiros was actually very good until the 9th inning when he kind of lost it. His previous long outing was 5 innings so perhaps the Mudcats should have been better prepared. They had a 7-0 lead into the 9th and only brought in Nate Griep (1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K) when the tying run came to the plate. He then gave up a double to put the tying run at second before retiring the next hitter on a chop to short. The offense only managed 5 hits but drew 9 walks. Corey Ray (1-3, 3B, 3 RBI, BB), Jake Gatewood (1-2, 2B, 2 BB), Lucas Erceg (1-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB), Trent Clark (1-3, BB, RBI, SB) and Troy Stokes Jr. (1-3, 3B, BB, SB) led the way. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Well a win's a win and Kodi Medeiros has made some strides. He is light years better than last year and looks unhittable at times. Just needs a little more consistency. Time will tell on that. It didn't appear to make much difference at the time but this inning was critical: Carolina Bottom of the 6th Trent Clark walks. Troy Stokes Jr. walks. Trent Clark to 2nd. With Mitch Ghelfi batting, Trent Clark steals (8) 3rd base. Troy Stokes Jr. steals (11) 2nd base. Mitch Ghelfi grounds out, pitcher Adam Choplick to first baseman Chuck Moorman. Max McDowell walks. Pitching Change: Kelvin Vasquez replaces Adam Choplick. Corey Ray triples (2) on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Arroyo. Trent Clark scores. Troy Stokes Jr. Max McDowell scores. Luis Aviles flies into a double play, center fielder Carlos Arroyo to catcher Carlos Garay to third baseman Josh Altmann. Corey Ray out at home.

Mudcats ride nine run first to 11-2 victory Corey Ray reached safely in all five of his at bats on Tuesday night By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 16, 2017 11:39 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/8/6/230600086/cuts/16x9_Burnes3_kxjnjjqz_bwm0a01f.jpg The amazing fact from the game story is that the Mudcats equalled their first inning output for the entire rest of the season in this one game. Corey Ray had two hits in the first inning and ended up 3-3 with two walks. Isan Diaz was 2-3 with two walks and cleared the bases with a double in the 1st. Mitch Ghelfi was 2-4. Jake Gatewood made two outs in the first but did get a hit later in going 1-5. Corbin Burnes (7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) made the start and went 7 innings for the win. He got off to a slow start giving up 3 hits and a run in the first but scattered the rest of the hits. Brad Kuntz and Quintin Torres-Costa each threw an inning. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 1st Corey Ray singles on a line drive to right fielder Eduard Pinto. Luis Aviles singles on a line drive to shortstop Arturo Lara, deflected by third baseman Josh Altmann. Corey Ray to 2nd. Isan Diaz walks. Corey Ray to 3rd. Luis Aviles to 2nd. Payano and Wood Ducks shut out Mudcats 5-0 The Mudcats saw their five game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 15, 2017 11:24 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/4/4/225165644/cuts/Ghelfi_vxonwlnk_cj2k1nj3.jpg Not much good to report in this game. The Mudcats could only muster 2 hits against the Wood Ducks. Jake Gatewood was held without a hit ending his hitting streak. Conor Harber (5 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 1 K) started and took the loss. He had trouble controlling his fastball pretty much the whole time. Scott Grist gave up 3 runs in just 2/3 of an inning but pitched into some bad luck as few of the hits he gave up were hit hard. Wuilder Rodriguez has been a bright spot on the staff and finished the game going 2 2/3 innings giving up no hits or walks with 2 strike outs. There was someone from the Brewers in the dugout who looked like Timlin but I won't swear to it. A Lucas Erceg single and a Mitch Ghelfi double were the only hits for the Mudcats. The Sky Sox and Biloxi carry 3 catchers but the Mudcats do not. This has limited the at bats that Mitch Ghelfi has received but he's made the most of it. He is 3rd on the team in OBP (Gatewood .413, Rijo .400, Ghelfi .365) and OPS (Gatewood .957, Diaz .841, Ghelfi .824). Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log

Link Report for Sunday 5/14 - Happy Mothers Day!

Mudcats finish sweep in Mother's Day marathon Mitch Ghelfi walked with the bases loaded to force in the game winning run on Sunday By Carolina Mudcats | May 14, 2017 7:53 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/7/6/228672476/cuts/Hidden_Ball_Trick_React.00_01_42_11.Still001_k2bj6k0k_f6gufyrt.jpg Tweedledee meet Tweedledum. Today's game was a mishmash of walks, errors and bad plays. The Mudcats managed to score 2 in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. Fittingly, it happened on a bases loaded walk. They sweep the White Sox, run off their 5th win in a row, get back to .500 and Jake Gatewood had a hit to tie the Mudcats' club record of 23 straight games. I guess that makes the White Sox Tweedledum. There were a few turning points in this game. Dane Dunning, one of the prospects the White Sox obtained in the Adam Eaton trade, was rolling along when he was struck around the hand area by a Trent Clark line drive. The trainer came out and they started warming up a relief pitcher. Dunning stayed in the game for three more hitters giving up 2 walks and a single. He then came out and I'm not sure the reliever, Kelvis Valerio, was sufficiently warmed up. In any case, he was greeted by heavy artillery giving up a single to Corey Ray, long double to Luis Aviles and a home run to Isan Diaz. It turned into a 6 run inning. Marcos Diplan got the start for the Mudcats (4 1/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 7 K). He did not command his fastball from the first pitch. He walked the opening batter on 4 pitches, each missing its target by at least a foot. He still has work to do. Freddie Peralta (3 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 6 K) followed and seemed to be in control. The second turning point came when Zach Collins, taken in last year's amateur draft directly after Corey Ray, hit a home run off Peralta. He seemed to stop challenging hitters after that and trying to nibble at the corners. He started to get into deep counts and eventually had to be taken out. He and Jon Olczak walked in 3 runs in the 8th as the Dash took the lead with 4 runs. The final turning point came when the Dash took out reliever Yelmison Peralta, who had retired 4 of 5 batters, to bring in a left hander to face Isan Diaz with one out in the 9th. Diaz promptly hit a long double to left center off the lefty. The Dash 3rd baseman had been thrown out for arguing balls and strikes and they had players out of position in the infield and hilarity ensued. Leading the way were Corey Ray (1-3, 2 BB), Luis Aviles (2-5, 2B 3 RBI), Isan Diaz (2-5, 2B, HR), Jake Gatewood (2-5, 2 infield singles), Troy Stokes Jr (1-3, 2 BB) and Mitch Ghelfi (2-3, 2 BB). Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log I'm going to concentrate on the positive here. Trailing 2-1: Carolina Bottom of the 4th Lucas Erceg flies out to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Trent Clark lines out, pitcher Dane Dunning to shortstop Danny Mendick to first baseman Brady Conlan. Troy Stokes Jr. walks. With Mitch Ghelfi batting, Troy Stokes Jr. steals (10) 2nd base. Ponce tosses gem; Mudcats win fourth straight Isan Diaz and Lucas Erceg both hit solo home runs in Saturday's series clinching victory By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 13, 2017 9:30 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/5/8/230105358/cuts/16x9_Ponce2_bugaftd0_df86k6dd.jpg The Mudcats have become a mini Team Streak with their 4th straight win and Jake Gatewood's hitting streak extending to 22 games. Cody Ponce (8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K) threw 94 pitches, 72 for strikes, in picking up his 3rd win of the season. He had an 11/2 ground out to fly out ratio. The only run he gave up was a home run by Telvin Nash, who is playing his first series since coming back from a 50 game suspension. Nate Griep picked up the save despite giving up 2 runs and was helped by the Dash. The tying run was on first base when the hitter hit a routine popup and the runner ran, perhaps thinking there were 2 out, and was easily doubled off first for the final out. Brannon Easterling started for Winston-Salem and threw well. Isan Diaz (1-2, HR 2 BB) tied the game in the 4th with a solo home run down the right field line. With one out in the 6th, Corey Ray chopped a single up the middle and then stole second. After a Luis Aviles ground out, Easterling wanted no part of Isan Diaz and walked him on 4 pitches. Jake Gatewood (2-4, 2B) then served a ball to the left field corner to drive in 2 runs and put the Mudcats ahead for good. Lucas Erceg (1-4) later added a solo home run to provide the winning margin. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Mudcats take the lead: Carolina Bottom of the 6th Wendell Rijo grounds out, third baseman Brady Conlan to first baseman Telvin Nash. Corey Ray singles on a ground ball to shortstop Danny Mendick. With Luis Aviles batting, Corey Ray steals (8) 2nd base. Luis Aviles grounds out, shortstop Danny Mendick to first baseman Telvin Nash. Isan Diaz walks. Jake Gatewood doubles (14) on a line drive to left fielder Jake Fincher. Corey Ray scores. Isan Diaz scores. Gatewood paces Mudcats in 8-5 series opening victory The Mudcats came back from an early 3-0 deficit while winning their third straight game By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 12, 2017 11:10 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/6/2/227352562/cuts/16x9_Gatewood4_hsefrd93_1y21x22z.jpg Jordan Yamamoto, coming off the disabled list, worked two innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits with no walks and 4 strike outs. Kodi Medeiros (5 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) had maybe his best outing of the season to collect the win. Brad Kuntz worked the last two innings. The game turned in the 5th when Corey Ray hit into an apparent fielder's choice but Weston Wilson was ruled safe at 2nd. An argument ensued and it seemed to get to the Dash. Carolina went on to score 5 runs in the inning. Jake Gatewood (2-4, 2 2B) extended his hitting streak to 21. Wendell Rijo (2-4, 2 2B) also had two doubles and the Mudcats added 3 more for 7 total doubles in the game. Weston Wilson, getting the start at 3rd, committed two errors and whiffed on a foul popup. Making a nice grab of a line drive to his right to end the 8th, he raised his arms as he entered the duguout like a gold medal winner in the Olympics. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 5th Weston Wilson walks. Wendell Rijo flies out to right fielder Louis Silverio. Mudcats sweep twin bill in Lynchburg http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/6/0/223108360/cuts/DSC_0664_h7sjntdt_ei0vmwh2.JPG Corbin Burnes has been light out good this year (now 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA) and he was good again today with 6 shutout innings. He was matched by Brock Hartson for Lynchburg until the 7th, and final, inning. Nat Griep came in for the save in the bottom of the 7th. Troy Stokes Jr., mired in a slump that has seen his batting average plummet, lofted a double off the center field fence to drive in the lead run in the top of the seventh. Isan Diaz (1-3, 2B) and Weston Wilson (1-3, RBI) also contributed to the two run 7th. Conor Harber (4 2/3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 8 K) started and took the loss. He gave up a home run to the second batter, Ka'ai Tom, and a double to Sicnarf Loopstok, the third batter, who then scored. That was all the Hillcats would need. The Mudcats' staff is last in the league in allowing walks, hit batsmen and wild pitches. They added 5 more wild pitches in this game. Jake Gatewood extended his hitting streak to 18, getting a single of one of the relievers after striking out twice against McKenzie. Isan Diaz had a walk and a single and had the only hit off McKenzie. The Mudcats had a chance to get back in the game in the 7th when they loaded the bases after scoring one run but Max McDowell's ground ball to the hole between short and third was snared by the shortstop who then threw out McDowell to end the threat. Alvarado and Love combine to shut out the Mudcats Cody Ponce struck out eight over 7.0 innings and took the tough luck loss By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 6, 2017 9:43 PM ET Weston Wilson proposed to his girl friend at the ceremonial first pitch but things went downhill from there. Burnes tosses one-hit gem as Mudcats win 7-2 McDowell and Gatewood combined for four RBIs in Carolina's six run fourth inning By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 4, 2017 11:39 PM ET Corbin Burnes pitching for the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Corbin Burnes went 6 2/3 innings throwing 94 pitches and giving up just 1 hit while walking 3 and striking out 5. Brad Kuntz and Scott Grist finished the game giving up two runs in the 9th. Corey Ray went 2-3 with a double and two walks. Ray now has 10 doubles on the season. The "double" was a generous call by the official scorer when a ground ball went through the legs of the Keys third baseman but you have to give Ray credit for hustle. It was 7-0 at the time and it would have been easy to jog to first when the ball eluded the 3rd baseman. He really needed to go all out to make it to second on that play. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a walk and 2 RBI, extending his hitting streak to 14. Max McDowell was 1-4 but drove in the first two runs with a line double into the left field corner.
