Mudcats outslug Nationals in first half finale victory Diaz, Stokes and Wilson each hit home runs in Sunday's victory By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 18, 2017 7:29 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/0/0/237336300/cuts/16x9_WilsonRed_b9r54rlu_tt5gwbe5.jpg When you read that headline, you probably assumed the home run was by Isan Diaz right? Nope. This time it was Brandon Diaz getting his first hit of the year. Diaz has spent most of his year on the "DL" but has been with the Mudcats the whole time. He is often seen with shin guards on as he helps with catching pitchers and is generally the first man to greet players at the dugout. Always seems to be in a good mood. Anyway, he hit a 3 run home run to left center in the 2nd inning to give the Mudcats a 4-0 lead. Troy Stokes Jr. (2-5, HR, SB) added a solo home run over the video board in left field to extend the lead to 5-0. Marcos Diplan (5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) got the start and retired the first 9 hitters. After that his command fell apart and he gave up the 5 runs that tied the game in the 4th and 5th innings. Conor Harber (2/3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 1 K) followed and couldn't get through 1 inning. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K) finished the game to pick up his 6th win of the year. He was really the only effective pitcher for either team. The Mudcats scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to regain the lead on a single off the wall by Weston Wilson (3-5, HR, 5 RBI) that plated two. Isan Diaz held up to see if the ball would be caught holding it to a single. The final 4 runs for the Mudcats came in the 6th capped off by a Weston Wilson 3 run home run. Unfortunately, one of the stadium cameras was knocked out by a foul ball and we never saw that home run. Not even Mass Haas will get video of that one. Isan Diaz was 2-3 with a double and two walks. Jake Gatewood and Lucas Erceg were each 1-3 with a double and two walks. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 2nd Jake Gatewood doubles (22) on a fly ball to right fielder Rhett Wiseman. Isan Diaz singles on a pop up to third baseman Ian Sagdal. Isan Diaz out at 3rd on the throw, right fielder Rhett Wiseman to catcher Matt Reistetter to third baseman Ian Sagdal. Jonathan Oquendo walks. Cooper Hummel to 2nd. Brandon Diaz homers (1) on a fly ball to left center field. Cooper Hummel scores. Jonathan Oquendo scores. Trent Clark strikes out swinging. Carolina Bottom of the 6th Trent Clark strikes out swinging. Troy Stokes singles on a ground ball to left fielder D. K. Carey. With Lucas Erceg batting, Troy Stokes steals (14) 2nd base. Stokes lifts Mudcats to 6-3 win with first career grand slam Troy Stokes Jr. was 3-for-3 with three runs, a grand slam and four RBIs By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 13, 2017 11:26 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/2/226387372/cuts/16x9_TroyStokesJr1_2fxjlrzh_2p41k3wm.jpg (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Troy Stokes Jr. (3-3, HR, BB, SB, 4 RBI) was a one man wrecking crew in this game. His grand slam gave the Mudcats the lead for good in the 6th inning. Freddie Peralta (5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 5 K) had some control issues but registered his first win of the season. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) had one of his best performances in relief. Nate Griep (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) picked up his 13th save. Nice to see him with a clean inning against a very good hitting club. Corey Ray was 0-3 but did draw two walks and stole his 15th base of the season. Jake Gatewood was 0-2 but drew 3 walks. Lucas Erceg was 2-4. Cooper Hummel also was 2-4. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Mudcats were up 2 runs until the 3rd: Salem Bottom of the 3rd Michael Chavis strikes out swinging. Diplan allows three home runs in 7-3 loss to Red Sox Aviles was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs in the loss By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 12, 2017 10:45 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/2/4/231792024/cuts/16x9_LuisAviles_cgu85mev_bw864evq.jpg Luis Aviles batting for the Carolina Mudcats. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Marcos Diplan (5 2/3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 6 K) started off the game by walking two and hitting a batter to load the bases. After two outs, former Brewer Jose Sermo ripped a double to the gap in left center scoring all three base runners. Sermo would later add a home run to end up with 4 RBIs. At that point, I gave up and went to the draft instead of finishing with this game. Conor Harber (2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) finished for the Mudcats. 3 of the 6 hits given up by Diplan were of the gopher ball variety. Luis Aviles (2-4, 2B, 3B) was the highlight offensively. Lucas Erceg was 2-3 with a walk. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Game over in the first inning: Salem Bottom of the 1st Bryan Hudson walks. Chad De La Guerra flies out to center fielder Trent Clark. Michael Chavis hit by pitch. Bryan Hudson to 2nd. Josh Ockimey walks. Bryan Hudson to 3rd. Michael Chavis to 2nd. Mike Meyers strikes out on a foul tip. Jose Sermo doubles (13) on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Bryan Hudson scores. Michael Chavis scores. Josh Ockimey scores. Austin Rei strikes out swinging.

Mudcats fall 6-1 in series finale in Myrtle Beach Troy Stokes Jr. hit his ninth homer of the season in the loss By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 11, 2017 10:20 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/9/0/224474490/cuts/414_Troy_StokesJr_Triple_8invdcy1_df76q6x8.jpg Troy Stokes Jr. playing for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) In the top of the 6th, with 2 men on and 2 out, Troy Stokes Jr. (1-5, HR) made a bid for his second home run of the game and it curved just foul. That would have tied the game. Instead, he popped out later in the at bat and the Mudcats were on their way to another loss. Trey Supak (5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K) took the loss. He served up a home run derby fast ball to Eloy Jimenez, probably the Pelicans' only legitimate hitting prospect, in the first inning for a 2 run home run that basically put the game out of reach the way the Mudcats have hit in this series. Brad Kuntz and Scott Grist finished the game. In addition to Troy Stokes' home run, Weston Wilson was 2-4 and Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a walk. Lucas Erceg was 0-4 with 3 strike outs and also dropped a popup in foul territory. He threw his bat after one of the K's. They now play 3 games on the road at the Salem Red Sox, who have been the top team in the Carolina league. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Four batters in the game was essentially over: Myrtle Beach Bottom of the 1st Bryant Flete singles on a ground ball to shortstop Luis Aviles. With Jesse Hodges batting, Bryant Flete steals (3) 2nd base. Jesse Hodges singles on a line drive to right fielder Trent Clark. Bryant Flete scores. Daniel Spingola singles on a ground ball to center fielder Corey Ray. Jesse Hodges scores. Daniel Spingola to 2nd. Throwing error by center fielder Corey Ray. Eloy Jimenez homers (6) on a fly ball to left field. Daniel Spingola scores. Eddy Martinez flies out to center fielder Corey Ray. Tyler Pearson strikes out swinging. Robert Garcia grounds out, second baseman Isan Diaz to first baseman Weston Wilson.

Gatewood homers twice in 3-2 loss in Myrtle Beach Gatewood went 3-for-4 with two home runs on Saturday By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 10, 2017 11:02 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/3/2/231792332/cuts/16x9_JakeGatewood_lyjdpd82_7w2brkn4.jpg Jake Gatewood batting for the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Comments on this game were made above in this thread. In the 4th inning, with a man on 2nd, there was a single to center and Corey Ray overthrew the cutoff man allowing the hitter to go to second. He eventually scored and, arguably, would not have done so if he had just been held to first on the single. The Mudcats have made this mistake over and over and it never seems to get corrected. In a one run game, that's the difference (end of rant). Cody Ponce (6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K) took 99 pitches to get through his 6 innings. He has not been particularly sharp the last 3 or so outings and this was another one of those. He had a 6-1 ground out to flyout stat. Eric Hanhold worked 2 scoreless innings in relief. Jake Gatewood (3-4, 2 HR) had 3 of the Mudcats' 5 hits. Lucas Erceg contributed a double. Myrtle Beach has surged into first in the standings mainly on hot pitching and that has continued in this series so the Mudcats aren't the only team struggling to hit Pelicans' pitching. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Myrtle Beach Bottom of the 4th Daniel Spingola doubles (15) on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Eddy Martinez singles on a line drive to center fielder Corey Ray. Daniel Spingola scores. Eddy Martinez to 2nd on the throw. Jesse Hodges hits a sacrifice bunt. Eddy Martinez to 3rd. Jesse Hodges to 1st. Tyler Alamo strikes out swinging. Trent Giambrone strikes out swinging. Robert Garcia singles on a ground ball to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Eddy Martinez scores. Jesse Hodges to 3rd. With Andruw Monasterio batting, Robert Garcia caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Max McDowell to shortstop Luis Aviles.

Yamamoto and Medeiros combine on two hit shutout The Mudcats moved to within 1.5 games of first with the 1-0 win By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 9, 2017 11:28 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/7/0/235500270/cuts/Yamamoto_1_en42wt4i_uhcf619n.JPG Jordan Yamamoto (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K) and Kodi Medeiros (3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) combined on a 2 hit shutout. It was the first time Myrtle Beach has been shutout this season. It was the first win of the year for Yamamoto and the first save for Medeiros. The shutout was preserved in the 3rd inning when Carlos Belonis gunned down Trent Giambrone at the plate on a prospective sacrifice fly. That inning saw the last hit by Myrtle Beach in the game. The only run of the game came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Gatewood (0-3, sacrifice fly). Corey Ray (1-3, 2B, SB) scored the run. Isan Diaz (1-3, 2B, BB) and Trent Clark (2-4) contributed. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Myrtle Beach Bottom of the 3rd (Buddy Bailey never should have sent him - much too shallow) Trent Giambrone walks. Connor Myers singles on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Trent Giambrone to 3rd. Connor Myers to 2nd on the throw. Bryant Flete flies into a double play, right fielder Carlos Belonis to catcher Cooper Hummel. Trent Giambrone out at home on the throw. Connor Myers to 3rd on the throw. P. J. Higgins grounds out, shortstop Luis Aviles to first baseman Jake Gatewood. Carolina Top of the 6th Corey Ray doubles (14) on a fly ball to right fielder Daniel Spingola. Troy Stokes Jr. flies out to center fielder Connor Myers. Corey Ray to 3rd. Isan Diaz walks. Jake Gatewood out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Eloy Jimenez. Corey Ray scores. Pitching Change: Jordan Minch replaces Thomas Hatch. Lucas Erceg singles on a line drive to left fielder Eloy Jimenez. Isan Diaz to 2nd. Trent Clark singles on a ground ball to shortstop Trent Giambrone. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Lucas Erceg to 2nd. Luis Aviles grounds into a force out, fielded by third baseman Jesse Hodges. Lucas Erceg out at 3rd.

Ray & Stokes go back-to-back in 9-3 loss The Mudcats lost a 3-1 lead in the sixth in a loss to the Pelicans By Carolina Mudcats | June 8, 2017 11:23 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/9/6/226387496/cuts/16x9_CoreyRay3_mvop8jq5_io0r85xb.jpg (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Another late inning meltdown, of the kind there have been too many of this year, resulted in the Mudcats falling further behind in the first half race with only 10 games remaining. Freddie Peralta (5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) got the start but could only go 5 innings with a pitch count up to 95. Quintin Torres-Costa gave up 4 runs in 2/3 innings to take the loss. The problems started when Max McDowell dropped a routine pop up behind the plate, trying to make a basket catch. That hitter then singled and scored. That was followed by a hit batsman and a throwing error on a comebacker to Torres-Costa. Later Torres-Costa gave up a 3 run home run. Conor Harber pitched the final 2 1/3 innings. He gave up another 4 runs, 2 earned. The Mudcats sole offensive output came in the 3rd when Corey Ray (1-5, HR, 4 K's) hit a 2 run home run. The next batter, Troy Stokes Jr. (1-4, HR, 2 K's) hit a solo home run to center field. The Pelicans announcer said that that was the first home run to that portion of the field this year. Trent Clark was 0-1 with 3 walks. The Mudcats struck out 17 times in this game. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Here's your highlight: Carolina Top of the 3rd Weston Wilson flies out to right fielder Eddy Martinez. Max McDowell walks. Corey Ray homers (4) on a line drive to right center field. Max McDowell scores. Troy Stokes homers (8) on a fly ball to right center field. Isan Diaz strikes out swinging. Jake Gatewood called out on strikes.
