Harber and Rodriguez shutout Astros Jake Gatewood was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs By Carolina Mudcats | May 3, 2017 3:46 PM ET Jake Gatewood batting for the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Conor Harber (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 4 K) and Wuilder Rodriguez (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K) combined for a three hit shutout. It was the longest outing for Harber in his professional career. The shutout was aided by Lucas Erceg pulling the hidden ball trick when the Astros had the tieing runs on 2nd and 3rd. Then a ball caromed off Erceg right to Luis Aviles who made an off balance throw to get the hitter by a hair for the final out of that inning. Erceg (1-4, 2B, RBI) drove in the first run with a two out double scoring Trent Clark from first. This was followed by a Jake Gatewood (2-2, BB, HR, SB, 2 RBI) single to plate the second run of the inning. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Key innings: Carolina Bottom of the 4th Trent Clark singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jason Martin. Troy Stokes Jr. strikes out swinging. Isan Diaz flies out to left fielder Johnny Sewald. Lucas Erceg doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Kyle Tucker. Trent Clark scores. With Anibal Sierra batting, Wuilder Rodriguez picks off Kyle Tucker at 3rd on throw to Lucas Erceg. Buies Creek Astros Manager Omar Lopez ejected by HP umpire Ryan Wilhelms. Anibal Sierra grounds out, third baseman Lucas Erceg to shortstop Luis Aviles to first baseman Jake Gatewood. -

Erceg just pulled the hidden ball trick on Kyle Tucker. Ha. -
Erceg's game tying blast not enough in 4-3 loss Isan Diaz and Lucas Erceg both homered and combined to drive in all three Carolina runs By Carolina Mudcats | May 2, 2017 11:41 PM ET Kyle Tucker homered in the 12th inning to put the Astros ahead for good. The Mudcats had a shot to win it in the 11th inning when Corey Ray led off with a double. Intentional walks to Isan Diaz and Lucas Erceg paid off when the Mudcats were unable to bring in a run with the bases loaded and one out. Marcos Diplan (6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K) started and had some success. Progress over his last couple of outings. Freddie Peralta (5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 7 BB, 9 K) followed and struggled with command at times. Back to back triples by Buies Creek led to the 2 runs given up by Peralta in the 8 inning. Quintin Torres-Costa worked the 12th, giving up the Tucker home run. Isan Diaz (3-4, 2 2B, HR, IBB) raised his batting average to .299 for the season. Lucas Erceg (2-4, HR, IBB) hit his home run with one out in the 9th to tie the game. The rest of the team had only 4 hits in 12 innings. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Ryan Deemes replaces Carlos Sierra. Troy Stokes Jr. pops out to first baseman Pat Porter in foul territory. Comeback bid falls short in 8-7 loss to Buies Creek Isan Diaz and Luis Aviles both hit home runs in Monday's 8-7 home loss By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 2, 2017 12:09 AM ET Carolina could not get the final hit to come all the way back and fell to Buies Creek. Eduardo de Oleo, making only his second appearance since hitting 3 home runs in a game against the Mudcats, victimized them again going 2-3 with two doubles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. He was 0-3 with 2 strikeouts in his last game. Cody Ponce (5 1/3 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR) started and took the loss. The two walks were as many as he had recorded in his other appearances combined. Colton Cross and Scott Grist finished the game. The Mudcats scored 3 runs twice on a long home run by Isan Diaz (2-5, HR, 3 RBI) and a bases loaded double by Corey Ray (2-5, 2 doubles, 3 RBI). Luis Aviles (2-5, HR) added a solo home run. Weston Wilson reached base 3 times with a walk and two hits. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log The Mudcats couldn't come up with the big 9th inning hit trailing 8-7: Carolina Bottom of the 9th Isan Diaz singles on a line drive to right fielder Kyle Tucker. Lucas Erceg strikes out swinging. Jake Gatewood walks. Isan Diaz to 2nd. Trent Clark grounds into a force out, second baseman Ryne Birk to shortstop Anibal Sierra. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Jake Gatewood out at 2nd. Trent Clark to 1st. Luis Aviles grounds out, shortstop Anibal Sierra to first baseman Dexture McCall. -
Mudcats outlast Keys 10-8 in extra-innings road win Trent Clark set a career high with five hits in Sunday's road win By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 30, 2017 8:12 PM ET It looked bad when Luis Aviles had a ground ball go through the wickets. When the runner tried to steal second, nobody covered the base and the throw to third from the outfield got away. Fortunately, Nate Griep was backing up third and then worked out of the jam. Jake Gatewood hit a home run to give the Mudcats the lead in the 12th and they then held on. Kodi Medeiros (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 K) got the start and had maybe his best outing of the year. Eric Hanhold then came on and did not. Nate Griep (3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K) went the extra mile in this game and ended up with the win while Scott Grist got the last two outs to pick up the save in his first appearance of the year. Jake Gatewood went 2-6 with the game winning home run. His 3rd in as many games. Trent Clark, as mentioned in the game story, had his best hitting day yet going 5-6 with a double, 3 runs batted in and a stolen base. Weston Wilson was 3-5 with a double. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Can't see this enough. Carolina Top of the 12th Jake Gatewood homers (4) on a fly ball to center field. Trent Clark singles on a line drive to right fielder Ademar Rifaela. With Luis Aviles batting, wild pitch by Franderlin Romero, Trent Clark to 2nd. Luis Aviles flies out to left fielder Randolph Gassaway. With Max McDowell batting, Trent Clark steals (4) 3rd base. Max McDowell out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Josh Hart. Trent Clark scores. Weston Wilson pops out to second baseman Drew Turbin. Let's give Scott Grist some credit. He was put in a very difficult position here and came through. Frederick Bottom of the 12th Ademar Rifaela flies out to center fielder Corey Ray. Alex Murphy walks. Steve Laurino doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Corey Ray. Alex Murphy to 3rd. Pitching Change: Scott Grist replaces Nate Griep. Josh Hart called out on strikes. Ricardo Andujar flies out to center fielder Corey Ray.

Error prone Mudcats swept in Saturday doubleheader Three Carolina errors helped fuel seven Frederick runs in game two By Carolina Mudcats | April 29, 2017 8:10 PM ET Brad Kuntz got the start in game 2 and took the loss. The Mudcats gave the Keys 6 outs in the 3rd inning, resulting in 6 runs scoring and the game basically being over. Wuilder Rodriguez pitched effectively the rest of the game, striking out 5 in 3 1/3 innings. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a home run (this one also to right but longer and much more toward center field). Mitch Ghelfi was 1-3 with a double. Wendell Rijo was 1-3 with a double. Luis Aviles was 1-3 with a home run. Aviles was under heavy heckling from one idiot when he hit the home run and even the Keys fans laughed when Carlos Belonis (on his way to the on deck circle, waved at the heckler after Aviles homered). Normally, I wouldn't advocate players getting involved with hecklers but this seemed to defuse the situation somewhat. Carolina Game 2 Box Score Carolina Game 2 Log I hate having to emphasize these situations, it's happening too much lately: Frederick Bottom of the 3rd Ricardo Andujar singles on a bunt ground ball to second baseman Wendell Rijo. Drew Turbin singles on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Ricardo Andujar to 3rd. Drew Turbin out at 2nd, center fielder Trent Clark to third baseman Lucas Erceg to second baseman Wendell Rijo. Ryan Mountcastle singles on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Ricardo Andujar scores. Randolph Gassaway reaches on a throwing error by second baseman Wendell Rijo. Ryan Mountcastle to 2nd. Yermin Mercedes homers (3) on a fly ball to left center field. Ryan Mountcastle scores. Randolph Gassaway scores. Ademar Rifaela flies out to center fielder Trent Clark. Alex Murphy reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Isan Diaz. Josh Hart doubles (4) on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Alex Murphy to 3rd. Stuart Levy singles on a line drive to center fielder Trent Clark. Alex Murphy scores. Josh Hart scores. Pitching Change: Wuilder Rodriguez replaces Brad Kuntz. Ricardo Andujar grounds out, shortstop Isan Diaz to first baseman Jake Gatewood. The first bolded part the throw got by the cutoff man and his backup. Fortunately, Erceg came off 3rd and was able to throw the hitter out at 2nd. The 2nd bolded part was a routine double play and they ended up getting nobody out. Kuntz was really hung out to dry in that inning by his defense. Speaking of Lucas Erceg, he is now hitting .175 in this last 10 games and looks like he may have lost some weight. Hopefully, everything is all right there.

Gatewood homers in 4-3 walk-off loss to Frederick The Mudcats lost 4-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader in Frederick By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 29, 2017 8:05 PM ET Mudcats are not very good right now. It reminds of when the Orioles always said about the Brewers: keep it close and they will beat themselves in the late innings. Corbin Burnes started and went 5 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 3 runs while walking 1 and striking out 4. Colton Cross finished the game and took the loss. Troy Stokes Jr singled in the tying run with 2 out in the 7th inning. This was followed by a line drive off the bat of Isan Diaz which was caught with a diving catch in center field to keep the game tied. Troy Stokes Jr ended up 2-3 with a double, walk and stolen base. Isan Diaz was 2-3 with a walk. Jake Gatewood was 1-2 with a walk and the home run mentioned by jjgott. Luis Aviles was getting into it with the umpire before Joe Ayrault was ejected for the 2nd straight game. I'm not sure what that was about but I believe the umpire was refusing to give him time out as he was setting up in the batter's box and the Keys were quick pitching him. Just a guess though. Late collapse stuns Mudcats in 11-9 loss The Mudcats lost a 6-3 lead in the eighth on Friday night By Carolina Mudcats | April 29, 2017 1:14 AM ET The headline is wrong. It was 9-3 when the collapse occurred. This was a game that took over 4 hours to play largely because the umpire refused to call strikes, especially when hitters got to strike two. The game ended up with 19 walks and both benches furious with the umpire. Joe Ayrault was run in the 8th inning when a ground ball, apparently foul, was called fair by the home plate umpire which contributed to the Mudcats' collapse. A dropped pop fly by Trent Clark that would have ended the 8th with the Mudcats still ahead also contributed. Conor Harber got the start and went 5 innings. Jon Olczek took the loss. Corey Ray hit two doubles. Here's the box score: Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Frederick Bottom of the 8th Ryan Mountcastle walks. With Jomar Reyes batting, wild pitch by Quintin Torres-Costa, Ryan Mountcastle to 2nd. Jomar Reyes called out on strikes. Ademar Rifaela walks. Pitching Change: Jon Olczak replaces Quintin Torres-Costa. Stuart Levy called out on strikes. Josh Hart doubles (2) on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Ryan Mountcastle scores. Ademar Rifaela to 3rd. With Ricardo Andujar batting, wild pitch by Jon Olczak, Ademar Rifaela scores. Josh Hart to 3rd. Ricardo Andujar doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Josh Hart scores. Carolina Mudcats Manager Joe Ayrault ejected by HP umpire Ronnie Whiting. Steve Wilkerson hit by pitch. Drew Turbin reaches on a fielding error by left fielder Trent Clark. Ricardo Andujar scores. Steve Wilkerson to 3rd. Austin Hays singles on a ground ball to left fielder Trent Clark. Steve Wilkerson scores. Drew Turbin to 2nd. Ryan Mountcastle singles on a ground ball to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Drew Turbin scores. Austin Hays to 3rd. Ryan Mountcastle to 2nd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Randolph Gassaway replaces Austin Hays. Jomar Reyes singles on a ground ball to right fielder Carlos Belonis. Randolph Gassaway scores. Ryan Mountcastle scores. Mudcats avoid the sweep with 9-7 series finale victory Luis Aviles scored three times and Isan Diaz had two doubles in the series finale victory By Carolina Mudcats | April 27, 2017 4:44 PM ET This game set baseball back a few decades but a win is a win I guess. Freddie Peralta pitched a strong 5 innings (2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K) with only a long home run by Jairo Beras blemishing the performance. Marcos Diplan (2 2/3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 K) however was another story as detailed above. Nate Griep finished the game (1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K) and picked up the win despite not being very effective. Troy Stokes Jr singled in the 1st extending his hitting streak to 8 games although striking out 3 times later on. Isan Diaz was 3-5 with 2 doubles (one on a missed sliding catch attempt that got by the outfielder). Luis Aviles was 2-3 with a walk. Max McDowell and Carlos Belonis were also 2-3 with a walk. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log This game could have been broken open in the 2nd inning when the Mudcats had gotten 5 of the first 9 hitters on base and it looked like the starter was down to perhaps his last hitter. Then: Carolina Bottom of the 2nd Luis Aviles walks. Max McDowell singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Luis Aviles to 3rd. Max McDowell to 2nd on the throw. Wendell Rijo out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Eduard Pinto. Luis Aviles scores. Carlos Belonis singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jairo Beras. Max McDowell to 3rd. With Corey Ray batting, Max McDowell caught stealing home, pitcher Jeffrey Springs to first baseman Carlos Garay to catcher Chuck Moorman. With Corey Ray batting, Carlos Belonis picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Chuck Moorman to shortstop Josh Morgan to first baseman Carlos Garay. The dreaded double steal totally backfired. Springs got out of the jam without even throwing a pitch with the top of the Mudcat order up. The key 8th inning: Carolina Bottom of the 8th Luis Aviles doubles (3) on a ground ball to right fielder Jairo Beras. Max McDowell walks. Pitching Change: Tyler Davis replaces Adam Choplick. With Wendell Rijo batting, throwing error by Tyler Davis on the pickoff attempt, Luis Aviles to 3rd. Max McDowell to 2nd. With Wendell Rijo batting, passed ball by Chuck Moorman, Luis Aviles scores. Max McDowell to 3rd. Wendell Rijo walks. Carlos Belonis singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Max McDowell scores. Wendell Rijo to 2nd. Corey Ray doubles (4) on a line drive to right fielder Jairo Beras. Wendell Rijo scores. Carlos Belonis to 3rd. Troy Stokes strikes out swinging. Isan Diaz doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Jairo Beras. Carlos Belonis scores. Corey Ray scores. Lucas Erceg flies out to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Jake Gatewood grounds out, third baseman Josh Altmann to first baseman Carlos Garay.

Mudcats fall in see-saw affair with Down East The Wood Ducks went up 2-0 in the series with the victory By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 26, 2017 11:47 PM ET Cody Ponce (7 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 2 K) got the start and ended up throwing 89 pitches in the 7 innings. He appeared to become ill in the last inning and the trainer was called out but he stayed in the game to finish the inning. Colton Cross, who has had a slow start (BAA=.391 going into today's game), took the loss while giving up 4 hits in 2 innings. Troy Stokes Jr was 2-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 7 games. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a walk and a double off the center field wall. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log

Mudcats unable to capitalize late in 4-1 loss Carolina left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth Tuesday night By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 25, 2017 10:57 PM ET Eric Hanhold (5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 4 K) started and took the loss. Kodi Medeiros (4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 8/0 GO/FO) finished out the game. After striking out the first two hitters and getting a soft fly to end the first, Hanhold struggled pretty much the rest of the way. He hit the first batter in the 2nd and then walked the second hitter. Both of these runners scored which was all the Wood Ducks needed. Trent Clark (1-2, HR, 2 BB) led the offense for the Mudcats. Max McDowell and Weston Wilson each had 2 hits. The game story covers the failure to come up with a big hit when needed. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log

Burnes records 9 Ks in 6-1 home win Stokes Jr. and Erceg both hit home runs for the Mudcats on Sunday By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | April 23, 2017 6:29 PM ET Corbin Burnes (6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K, 6/1 GO/FO) picked up his first victory of the season and in the process lowered his ERA to 0.82 early in the season. Jon Olczak and Nate Griep finished the game off. After trailing 1-0 through 5 innings, Corey Ray (1-3, 2B, BB, SB) tied the game with a double off the wall in right center. The lead run then came in on a 2 out single by Lucas Erceg (2-4, HR, 2 RBI). Then in the 7th, Troy Stokes Jr. (2-3, HR, 3 RBI, BB, SB) hit a 2 out 3 run home run to essentially salt the game away. Carolina Box Score I agree with Outlander that Troy Stokes, Jr. has had a really strong start to this season. He has fielded well, run the bases well, thrown well and hit well (raising his batting average to .314 after today's game). Jake Gatewood had a BABIP of .500 going into today's game and was 1-1 in that department today. Obviously, he won't continue at that pace but it does tell you that he has hit a lot of line drives this year. Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 6th Carlos Belonis strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Elieser Hernandez. Carlos Belonis to 1st. Corey Ray doubles (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Kyle Tucker. Carlos Belonis scores. Troy Stokes Jr. singles on a fly ball to center fielder Kyle Tucker. Corey Ray to 3rd. Pitching Change: Ryan Deemes replaces Elieser Hernandez. With Isan Diaz batting, Troy Stokes Jr. steals (7) 2nd base. Isan Diaz flies into a double play, left fielder Myles Straw to catcher Anthony Hermelyn. Corey Ray out at home. Lucas Erceg singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jason Martin. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Jake Gatewood singles on a line drive to left fielder Myles Straw. Lucas Erceg to 2nd. Trent Clark strikes out swinging. Carolina Bottom of the 7th Luis Aviles singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jason Martin. With Max McDowell batting, Luis Aviles steals (8) 2nd base. Max McDowell grounds out, third baseman Osvaldo Duarte to first baseman Dexture McCall. Carlos Belonis out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Ryan Deemes to first baseman Dexture McCall. Luis Aviles to 3rd. Corey Ray walks. Pitching Change: Carlos Sierra replaces Ryan Deemes. With Troy Stokes Jr. batting, Corey Ray steals (3) 2nd base. Diaz homers in second straight as Mudcats end skid The Mudcats snapped a four game losing streak with a 6-2 victory on Saturday By Carolina Mudcats | April 22, 2017 9:19 PM ET Conor Harber had probably his most effective start (4 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K) of the season. It was not particularly efficient however as he took 91 pitches to go 4 innings. Quintin Torres-Costa (4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K) pitched the next 4 innings to earn the win. Nate Griep finished up with 2 strike outs in his one inning. Leading the offense were Corey Ray (2-3, BB, SB, Sac Fly), Troy Stokes Jr (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI), Isan Diaz (1-3, HR, BB, 2 RBI) and Jake Gatewood (2-4, 2B, SB). de Oleo's three HRs power Astros to 9-4 victory Eduardo de Oleo homered three times at Five County Stadium on Friday night By Carolina Mudcats | April 22, 2017 12:38 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/3/4/225792634/cuts/16x9_Kuntz_mv66ouzv_g0tgqzms.jpg Marcos Diplan (2/3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 K) started and took the loss. Freddie Peralta worked 5 innings giving up 1 run on a De Oleo HR while walking 3 and striking out 8. De Oleo is the Astros 24-year-old backup catcher working for his 3rd team in the last year. He had hit 22 career home runs before this game. Mudcat pitchers combined for 8 walks. The Mudcat offense put plenty of men on base but couldn't drive in enough of them. Isan Diaz hit his first home run of the season in the 9th inning. Lucas Erceg (2-5, 2B), Jake Gatewood (3-4, 2B, BB), and Troy Stokes (3-4, BB, SB) led the offense. The Timber Rattlers had faced Yoanys Quiala twice last year when he pitched for Quad Cities. Gatewood homered off him last year so there was some familiarity there.
