  2. They mentioned in more than one Manatees' broadcast that Garrett was not 100% physically last year so maybe discount 2014 a little bit. Anyway his line now is: .308/.370/.452/.822 Compare that to other first base prospects: Josh Bell (Pirates rated #1 on MLB for 1B): .316/.388/.444/.832 all at Indy AAA I think. Dominic Smith (spent all season in Florida State League, Mets #3 on MLB prospects): .305/.354/.417/.771 I won't do A. J. Reed who is #2 because he's a totally different player but Garrett is holding his own against the best this year.
  3. Wang's Gem Helps Manatees Break Streak By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 09/02/2015 9:04 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/4/143038374/cuts/IMG_0605_vbtpxr0z_o97znow3.JPG Wei-Chung Wang, seen here, tossed a complete game in Tuesday night's victory. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, FL - The Brevard County Manatees (26-36, 55-76 overall) benefitted from Wei-Chung Wang's finest performance of the season to earn a 5-2 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (19-42, 52-78 overall) in the series finale Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County staked Wang with an early lead as they were able to do some damage against Lakeland starting pitcher Endrys Briceno in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Brennan led off with a single to left and then went to third on a Dustin Houle single to right. Rafael Neda then hit into a double play that would erase both him and Houle but allowed Brennan to score to put the 'Tees in front. The Flying Tigers would draw level against Wang in the top of the fifth inning, which was ignited by a leadoff triple from Ben Verlander off of the right centerfield wall. He would not have to wait long to come home as Jared Reaves laced a single into left center to tie the game. A pitch in the dirt to Grayson Greiner gave Reaves the incentive to try to take second but a strong throw from Neda behind the plate would cut him down and the inning shortly after that as Wang struck out Greiner and Tyler Hanover. However, the Manatees would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Angel Ortega was the catalyst for the rally as he reached on a one-out single and then moved to second on an Omar Garcia base hit in between first and second into right. Chris McFarland then singled in nearly the same spot to drive in Ortega to give the Manatees the lead. Briceno then ended his outing by hitting Clint Coulter with a pitch, which loaded the bases, as he would make way for Scott Sitz. Brennan greeted him with a bloop two-run double for his third and fourth RBI of the series. Houle then lifted a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Coulter to cap the outburst. Lakeland's last threat against Wang would come in the top of the eighth, which started with a leadoff triple from Reaves down the right field line. After Greiner flew out to shallow left, Hanover singled to right center to score Reaves but would be thrown out by Garcia trying to stretch for a double. Wang then retired the final four hitters to record his third consecutive complete game, this being the first to go nine innings. He gave up two runs on six hits for the night, striking out six, which tied a season high and walked none on 101 pitches for his 10th win of the season. Five Manatees recorded multi-hit games to help lead an 11-hit charge. Brennan capped a five-hit series with two more, including his 25th double and brought his RBI total to 53 for the season. The Manatees have an off day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday as they begin the final series of the season at home against the Daytona Tortugas. RHP Johnny Hellweg (1-6, 5.54 ERA) will get the start; he'll be opposed by RHP Nick Travieso (6-6, 2.89 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M.
  4. From the Lakeland Ledger: Flying Tigers fall to Manatees 5-2 Ledger Staff Published: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 6:48 a.m. Last Modified: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 6:48 a.m. VIERA — Taylor Brennan's two-run double in the fifth inning was all the support Wei-Chung Wang would need as Brevard County beat Lakeland 5-2 on Tuesday in Florida State League action. The Flying Tigers (52-78) were just one run behind when the Manatees (55-76) strung together three singles to set the stage for Brennan. Brevard County would go on to score four runs in the inning to break the game open. Wang (10-6) would do the rest, allowing just two runs and striking out six in a complete-game effort. Jared Reaves led the way for Lakeland, going 2 for 3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Lakeland starter Endrys Briceno (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings. The Flying Tigers have an off day and will return to action at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home against the Tampa Yankees.
  5. Brevard County 5, Lakeland 2 I can't find a story on this game. Wei-Chung Wang went the distance in one of his better outings of the year. Two triples given up led to the two runs. Other than that pretty much domination by Wang. Brevard County Box Score Omar Garcia, Chris McFarland, Taylor Brennan, Dustin Houle and Angel Ortega all had 2 hits. Brennan got his 25th double of the season and is now 5 for 9 the last two days. Brevard County Game Log After Lakeland tied the game at one in the top of the fifth, the game was essentially decided here: Brevard County Bottom of the 5th Steven Halcomb grounds out, shortstop Jared Reaves to first baseman Francisco Martinez. Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jared Reaves. Omar Garcia singles on a line drive to right fielder Ben Verlander. Angel Ortega to 2nd. Christopher McFarland singles on a line drive to right fielder Ben Verlander. Angel Ortega scores. Omar Garcia to 3rd. Clint Coulter hit by pitch. Christopher McFarland to 2nd. Pitching Change: Scott Sitz replaces Endrys Briceno. Taylor Brennan doubles (25) on a fly ball to left fielder Raph Rhymes. Omar Garcia scores. Christopher McFarland scores. Clint Coulter to 3rd. Dustin Houle out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Ismael Salgado. Clint Coulter scores. Rafael Neda flies out to right fielder Ben Verlander.
  6. The Brewer Nation ‏@BrewerNation 1h1 hour ago The #Brewers announce that @ZDavies3 has been added to the active roster by way of contract purchase. ==and there we have it. Zach Davies to start for the Brewers on Wednesday. Good luck Zach!
  7. Yes. Dave and Jerry were speculating on the Manatees' broadcast last night that Jorge Ortega exiting after 3 innings could mean a promotion for somebody to the Brewers and Jorge would take his place. Probably Davies to Milwaukee as MH speculates.
  8. Flying Tigers Defense Saves Game One Triumph By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 08/31/2015 11:47 PM ET Viera, FL - The Lakeland Flying Tigers (18-41, 51-77 overall) got timely defense to hold on to a 2-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (25-35, 54-75 overall) in Game One of a doubleheader Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees seized the lead right away against Flying Tigers starting pitcher Jonathan Maciel in the bottom of the first. Omar Garcia led off by legging out an infield single and then moved to second when Chris McFarland slapped a base hit into left field. After Clint Coulter struck out, Taylor Brennan flicked a base hit to left to bring in Garcia for his 50th RBI of the season. Dustin Houle then loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch but Jose Pena hit into an around the horn double play to short-circuit the rally. Lakeland responded immediately in the top of the second against Manatees starter Jorge Ortega. Curt Powell led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then came into score on a Ben Verlander single to left. Ortega limited the damage to just that as he would get Jared Reaves to ground into a double play and then struck out Tim Remes. The Flying Tigers would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth against Manatees reliever Stephen Peterson. Powell singled to center with one out to start the rally and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk to Verlander, Reaves laced a double to the left field corner to score Powell and move Verlander to third. Peterson and Preston Gainey would make sure the margin stayed there as they combined to retire the final 11 Flying Tiger hitters they faced after the double. The 'Tees had two opportunities to potentially tie the game erased by stellar play from the Flying Tiger outfield defense, the first coming in the bottom of the fourth. After Michael Ratterree doubled with one out, Steven Halcomb lifted a would-be single into left center that Raph Rhymes snagged with a scoop catch and then made the easy throw to second base with Ratterree already halfway to home. Then in the bottom of the seventh, with Garcia on first and one out, McFarland ripped a single into center that Ismael Salgado cut off and then threw to a covering Powell at third who applied the tag on Garcia to preserve the win. Maciel turned in a solid start to earn his fifth win of the season, giving up just the one run on seven hits in six innings of work. Whit Mayberry nailed down his fifth save of the season. Game 1 Box Score Game 1 Game Log Ziomek Shines for Lakeland in Game Two Victory Ziomek Fans Seven in Win By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 08/31/2015 11:48 PM ET Viera, FL - Kevin Ziomek turned in a masterful performance as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (19-41, 52-77 overall) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (25-36, 54-76 overall) 3-1 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. Ziomek (9-10, 3.51 ERA) threw 6.1 innings to earn the victory. He surrendered one run on four hits and two walks. Ziomek fanned seven. Lakeland scored a single run in three consecutive frames from the third to the fifth innings. Ben Verlander opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third. Tyler Hanover added an RBI single in the next inning and Ben Verlander made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Brevard County was able to get on the board in the sixth. With two outs, Chris McFarland singled. After Clint Coulter singled to left, Taylor Brennan drilled an RBI single to left field and made it 3-1, Lakeland. The Manatees threatened in the last half of the seventh. With one out, Michael Ratterree drew a walk after falling behind in the count 0-2 that chased Ziomek. Tyler Ford entered from the Lakeland bullpen. Paul Eshleman smoked a line drive down the third base line, but Hanover made a lunging grab for the second out. Angel Ortega then grounded out to third to end the ballgame. Ford recorded his first save of the season. Brandon Woodruff (4-6, 3.49 ERA) took the loss. He surrendered three runs - one earned - on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three. Tristan Archer tossed two shutout innings in relief. The Manatees and Flying Tigers will conclude the series tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (9-6, 3.65 ERA) will get the ball for Brevard County. Lakeland will send RHP Endrys Briceno (1-2, 3.42 ERA) to the hill. Game 2 Box Score Omar Garcia 3 for 7 in the double header, Chris McFarland 3 for 7, Taylor Brennan 3 for 6. Game 2 Game Log
  9. Well, Jorge Ortega only went 3 innings. ??? 141 2/3 innings for the year. He may have hit his limit. Dave is speculating that we have seen the last of Jorge in Brevard County.
  10. The Manatees are in a rain delay. Last time I called for a rain out they got 2 games in so I won't guess this time.

  12. Saturday's Manatees/Threshers Game Called After Five Innings Brevard County Manatees 08/29/2015 9:13 PM ET VIERA, Fla. - Saturday's game between the Brevard County Manatees and the Clearwater Threshers at Space Coast Stadium has been called after five innings due to inclement weather. The two clubs do not play each other again in 2015. Since five innings were played and the game is deemed official, the game will not be resumed. All statistics are official, despite there not being a winner. For more information on the Brevard County Manatees, call (321) 633-9200 or go online to ManateesBaseball.com. Also, don't forget to like the Manatees on Facebook and follow the Manatees both on Twitter and Instagram. Brevard County Box Score Javi Salas went all 5 innings and his recent pattern continued. Not walking guys but not commanding the ball in the strike zone. Here he gave up 10 hits and 4 runs in the 5 innings. Clint Coulter got his 30th double of the year and Michael Ratterree his 10th. Dustin Houle drove in 2 runs. Brevard County Game Log
  13. The position that worries me most is catcher. We have zilch at c, and that's not a problem we can fix with anyone we have. There is Carlos Leal who had a pretty good year, at least with the bat.
  14. Pullin's Bat, Glove Wins Game One for Threshers By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 08/29/2015 12:27 AM ET Viera, FL - Seven innings worth of baseball were ultimately decided by the smallest of margins as the Clearwater Threshers (37-23, 74-56 overall) squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (25-33, 54-73 overall) in Game One of a doubleheader Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County would take the lead in the bottom half of the second inning, which started with a base hit to center off of Threshers starting pitcher Ricardo Pinto. Following fly ball outs from Dustin Houle and Rafael Neda, Michael Ratterree lifted a two-strike pitch over the head of left fielder Andrew Pullin allowing Brennan, who was running on contact, to score from first. The 'Tees very nearly added a second run when Ratterree tried to score on a Steven Halcomb infield single but a perfect throw from first baseman Rhys Hoskins to the plate gave Willians Astudillo enough time to apply the tag and keep the Manatee lead at one. The Threshers would swing the pendulum in their favor for good in the top of the fifth inning against Manatees starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg. The inning was catalyzed on a leadoff bunt single by Malquin Canelo, who then moved to second on a Derek Campbell ground out. Jesmuel Valentin then drew a walk and when Carlos Tocci singled to right, the bases would be loaded for Pullin. He would lace a double to left center to bring home Canelo and Valentin to put Clearwater in front. Hellweg (1-6, 5.54 ERA) would avoid further damage by inducing a grounder back to the mound from Hoskins for a force out at the plate and a flyout from Astudillo. Brevard County had their chances in each of the last two innings against the Thresher bullpen. In the bottom of the sixth, a pair of infield singles from Angel Ortega and Omar Garcia and an intentional walk to Clint Coulter from Jesen Dygestile-Therrien would load the bases for Taylor Brennan. He grounded into an around the horn double play to leave the Manatees empty handed. In the 'Tees last chance in the bottom of the seventh, Houle led off with a base hit up the middle against closer Miguel Nunez and would be lifted for pinch-runner Jose Pena. Pena would then move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Neda. After Ratteree struck out, Halcomb lifted what appeared to be the game-tying hit but Pullin laid out to make a diving catch to end it. Pullin's two RBI gave him 72 for the season and the deciding double was his 18th of the campaign. Aaron Brown registered the lone multi-hit game for the Threshers, as well as his eighth stolen base of the season. Pinto (8-2, 2.45 ERA) was solid in five innings of work to his eighth win of the season. He gave up just the one run on four hits and walked one. Hellweg gave up two runs on seven hits in a season-high six innings. Garcia recorded the only multi-hit game for the 'Tees and also swiped his 52nd stolen base of the season. Game 1 Box Score Game 1 Game Log Threshers Take Game Two, Sweep Doubleheader Four-Run Third Leads Clearwater to Victory By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 08/29/2015 12:28 AM ET Viera, FL - The Clearwater Threshers (38-23, 75-56 overall) scored four runs in the third inning en route to a 7-0 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (25-34, 54-74) in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. With the game scoreless, Jesmuel Valentin lined a single to center with one out. Carlos Tocci then hit a sharp ground ball to short stop. Steven Halcomb had the ball go between his legs and trickle into left-center field. Valentin went to third on the Halcomb error. Andrew Pullin opened the scoring with an RBI single to left field. Rhys Hoskins lined a single to center to load the bases. After an Aaron Brown sacrifice fly made it 2-0, Chace Numata laced an RBI single to left field. Malquin Canelo capped the four-run third with a soft liner to right field that scored Hoskins. Valentin added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Brown launched a two-run home run in the seventh to complete to scoring. David Whitehead (8-11, 4.55 ERA) tossed five shutout innings to earn the win. He surrendered just five hits and two walks. He fanned three. Cy Sneed (3-4, 2.78 ERA) took the loss. He allowed four runs, none of which were earned, on nine hits over four innings. The Manatees and Threshers will conclude the series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. RHP Javi Salas (8-8, 4.21 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Manatees. Clearwater will send RHP Mark Leiter, Jr. (6-1, 2.04 ERA) to the bump. Game 2 Box Score Paul Eshleman played first, Halcomb at short in the nightcap. Pretty miserable day all around. Game 2 Game Log
  15. Manatees delayed by rain. Frankly, I'll be surprised if they get either game in today. Radar looks bad.
  16. I'd like to put out Nathan Orf again at 3B. All the guy does is get on base with occasional extra base power but not a home run hitter. Was .388 OBP at Brevard and is now .380 at Biloxi this year. How many Brewers at any level are performing that well? He has played 62 games at 3rd with a RF/9 of 2.32 and 2 errors in 146 chances. I get that RF/9 (putouts and assists per 9 innings) is not the best stat but it's what we have in the Minors. The equivalent for Taylor Brennan, more of a traditional 3B type, is 2.70 with 24 errors in 297 chances at 3rd. Perez with the Brewers: 2.30 and 4 in 69 chances. Herrera: 2.89 with 5 errors in 70 chances. So his fielding looks like a sure handed guy probably with limited range. Still in the ballpark of current contenders though. If the Brewers can't get a 3B by trade, Orf is a real possibility, IMO.
  17. Manatees are down to 4 infielders with the promotion of Garrett Cooper (well deserved by the way). Taylor Brennan has played some first and Steven Halcomb some 3rd but you have to believe somebody will be promoted from the T-Rats who have 9 infielders (although 3 on the DL).
  18. Brewers Player Dev ‏@BrewersPD 2h2 hours ago OF Trent Clark and SS Gilbert Lara have been transferred to Helena. Now we know why they had yesterday off.
  19. Shooter's father drafted by Packers TV shooter Vester Flanagan's father was once drafted by the Packers.
  20. No need to trade any of them unless a deal is offered that can't be refused. Braun needs regular rest anyway with his hand the way it is. All of Davis, Braun and Santana can get 400+ at bats by resting one each day. Earl Weaver used this strategy successfully although he had a platoon with Roenicke and Lowenstein which probably helped.
  21. Tyrone Perry is out with an undisclosed injury as mentioned by MH in Tuesday's link report for the Arizona Brewers.
  22. Lakeland takes rain-shortened series finale from Manatees August 25, 2015 7:41 PM MST http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/10/e5/10e54bc248551bbb8aece65c0c52f039.JPG?itok=fQuNXK3Z Clint Coulter knocked in the only Manatees run on Tuesday, with a sac fly. Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography (used with permission) The three-game series between the Brevard County Manatees and Lakeland Flying Tigers wrapped up Thursday night with Lakeland winning another low scoring game, 2-1. The game was delayed in the seventh inning due to rain and did not resume. The tight, close nature of the ballgame was no surprise. Game one of the series was won by Lakeland 1-0 and the Manatees answered on Monday, with a 2-1 victory. Pitching has been the story all series long and Tuesday was no exception. Wei-Chung Wang went six innings for the Manatees and Lakeland’s Kevin Ziomek matched that effort. Wang (9-6) blinked first, giving up a run in the second inning. After getting the first two outs, Wang gave up a single to Ben Verlander. Jared Reaves hit one to shortstop that Angel Ortega couldn’t field, putting runners at first and second. Grayson Greiner then smacked an RBI single to left, giving the Flying Tigers a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until the fourth inning when Omar Garcia started things with a single. As has been the case so many times this season, Garcia took matters into his own hands from there. After Chris McFarland flied out, Garcia stole second and then took third moments later. For Garcia, those were stolen bases number 50 and 51 on the season. Clint Coulter, who had a birds-eye view of Garcia’s stolen bases from home plate, hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Garcia home with the tying run. Taylor Brennan followed with a double and then he followed in Garcia’s tracks, stealing third. He was stranded there when Dustin Houle grounded to first. That missed opportunity would prove costly, because the Flying Tigers scored the decisive tally in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Tyler Hanover singled. Ismael Salgado hit into a force play at second, taking Hanover off the bases, but Salgado reached safely. Raph Rhymes was next up and he rifled a double to center, plating Salgado and giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The Manatees got one more at-bat in the sixth and McFarland hit a two-out double, but with rain falling in the top of the seventh, the umpiring crew decided to call it. Wang took the loss for the Manatees, giving up six hits in his six innings of work. He allowed one earned run and struck out three, while walking none. He definitely deserved a better fate, but was outdueled by Ziomek, who allowed only three hits, while striking out five. After a league-wide off-day on Wednesday, the Manatees will return home to start a six-game homestand against Clearwater on Thursday. The starting pitchers have not been named, but first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score A bunt single by Omar Garcia followed by his 2 stolen bases and a sacrifice fly by Clint Coulter was the only run for the Manatees. Taylor Brennan and Chris McFarland both doubled for the other 2 hits by the Manatees. Garcia had 50 stolen bases as a goal at the start of the season so he has now achieved that goal. 23. Woodruff Fuels Manatees in Tight Win By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 08/24/2015 10:19 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/6/6/142829066/cuts/IMG_1873_frq2g4zo_60gjlqqx.JPG Lakeland, FL - For the second consecutive game, the Brevard County Manatees (25-31, 54-71 overall) got a strong performance from their starting pitcher and this time, they were able to reward it as they earned a late 2-1 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (15-39, 48-75 overall) Monday at Joker Marchant Stadium. The 'Tees jumped out to an immediate lead thanks to consecutive one-out doubles by Chris McFarland and Clint Coulter. That lead would last until the bottom of the second inning, which started with a one-out base hit to right by Curt Powell. Ben Verlander then followed with a double to center, which moved Powell to third. Jared Reaves then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring Powell home and bring the Flying Tigers level. The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh as the Manatees faced new Flying Tiger reliever Julio Felix. The frame started on the right note as Michael Ratterree drew a walk and then moved up to second on a sacrifice from Steven Halcomb. Angel Ortega then made it count with a single to center to bring Ratteree home and put Brevard County ahead for good. Tyler Spurlin retired six of the seven batters he faced to earn his second save of the season. The star of the night was Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff, who turned in a third straight stellar outing to earn his fourth win of the season. Woodruff gave up just one run on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out seven and walking one. Jonathan Maciel pitched well enough to win for Lakeland but was ultimately left with a no-decision after giving up one run on four hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one. The Manatees go for the series win in the rubber game on Wednesday as they turn to LHP Wei-Chung Wang (9-5, 3.75 ERA). He'll face the Florida State League leader in strikeouts, LHP Kevin Ziomek (7-10, 3.70 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Woodruff: 7 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 4/9 GO/FO Spurlin: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K Back to back doubles by Chris McFarland and Clint Coulter in the 1st. Not much else offensively. Woodruff was a closer in college. Maybe the Brewers are treating him like they did Damien Magnifico? Using him as a starter improves control and builds up arm strength with more innings than otherwise. He is now throwing mid-90s consistently and touching the high nineties as the Brewers were touting in the Spring. Brevard County Game Log
  24. Brandon Woodruff has been really good in August. Finally gave up an earned run today but that's it in 24+ innings with 23 Ks. Hopefully the bullpen closes this game out.
  25. Longevity is worth something but for the record, at bats per HR: Ruth 11.8 Aaron 16.4 Bonds 12.9 Arod 15.0 Ruth played fewer games per season.
