Link Report for Saturday 6/6 - Welcome Home, Biloxi!
WV Brew replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Michael Ratterree starting in CF in game one. No more Clint Coulter in centerfield, I'm assuming. Ratterree won a minor league gold glove last year albeit for right field. -
Brett Lawrie Incident Bat shatters and strikes a woman in the face. Be careful at the game folks.

Manatees will start in rain delay. No start time yet.

Joe Ayrault on the pregame today. He says Ratterree broke a bone in his hand not the wrist. Will play center as well as right and left and probably an outfielder will be the DH most days. They still have 3 catchers. Ratterree not in the lineup today. Probably tomorrow.

Patrick- Just curious. How is this a great deal for the State and City? You realize virtually every economist who has studied stadium subsidies finds them to be a bad deal for the taxpayer don't you?

Brevard County Bats Quiet in 5-1 Loss Gabryszwski Tosses Six Shutout Innings By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 06/04/2015 11:26 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/3/6/128693736/cuts/IMG_1723_jzy8tqiv_1l8bh3k0.JPG Viera, Fla. - Jeremy Gabryszwski dominated on Thursday as the Dunedin Blue Jays (23-31) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (23-30) by a score of 5-1 at Space Coast Stadium. Gabryszwski (3-3, 3.69 ERA) threw six shutout frames and allowed just two hits to earn the victory. He walked two and fanned four in a brilliant effort. Dunedin opened the scoring in the top of the third. With two outs, J.D. Davis hit a ground-rule double over the left field wall. L.B. Dantzler then singled on a grounder through the right side. Clint Coulter's throw was late and the Blue Jays grabbed a 1-0 lead. Dantzler finished 4-for-4 with four singles on the night. The Jays would tack on a pair in the fourth against Eric Marzec. With one out, Christian Lopes drew a walk. Ian Parmley then reached on a ball that was booted by Christopher McFarland. Lopes went to third on the play. Parmley stole second to put two runners in scoring position. With the infield back, Jorge Saez plated Lopes with a grounder to second. Parmley moved up to third on the play. Roemon Fields then drilled a comebacker that Marzec was able to knock down. But, Fields legged out an infield single to score Parmley and give Dunedin a 3-0 advantage. The Blue Jays were able to add another in the fifth. Dantzler singled with one out and Matt Dean followed up with a double. Mitch Nay recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field. Marzec was removed after five innings. He surrendered four runs - two earned - on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four. Brevard County was able to get on the board in the seventh. Garrett Cooper hit a sharp grounder that kicked off the first base bag and went down the right field line with no outs. Cooper recorded a double and extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Two batters later, Paul Eshleman stroked a double off of the fence in left-center field to score Cooper. Dunedin scored a late insurance run in the ninth on another sac fly from Nay. Stephen Peterson threw four solid innings of relief. He allowed just one run on three hits and four walks. He also struck out four batters. Coulter went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss. The Manatees wore tool belt themed jerseys for Habitat for Humanity Weekend, which concludes on Saturday. The jerseys are available for purchase via auction on manatees.milbauctions.com. The auction concludes on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. Brevard County and Dunedin will play again on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (3-2, 6.16 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Manatees. The Blue Jays will send RHP Jeff Hoffman (1-1, 5.02 ERA) to the bump. Brevard County Box Score With Jonathan Lucroy gone, Marzec went back to his old way of pitching. He took 95 pitches to get through 5 innings. Angel Ortega and Chris McFarland both made their 10th error of the season. Brevard County Game Log

Minor League Transactions - 2015 Regular Season
WV Brew replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I think they said today (Thursday) for Hellweg in Brevard Mass. Haven't seen an official announcement yet though. Seidenberger has reverse splits BAA is .250 for left handed hitters and 0.065 against righties. That slider boring in on the right handers has been really tough to handle. -
Terry Steps In To Silence Tortugas By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 06/04/2015 12:02 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/2/4/124496624/cuts/Roache_1_5l30v28o_rpl1wbo5.JPG Victor Roache, seen above, collected two hits in Wednesday's game. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - All the Brevard County Manatees (23-29) needed from Clint Terry on Wednesday night was a spot start. What they got was a spotlight performance as Terry struck out a career-high 10 over seven innings to earn the Manatees a 5-2 win over the Daytona Tortugas (32-21) at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees would take the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning. The rally started on a one-out Taylor Brennan base hit to center. He would steal second with Garrett Cooper at the plate, who then flew out to right. Up came Jose Pena, who appeared to hit into an inning-ending grounder to third but Taylor Sparks' to first went wide, bringing home Brennan to make it 1-0. After a walk to Cameron Garfield, Angel Ortega singled home Pena to double the lead. Omar Garcia then continue the deluge with an RBI single to score Garfield. The inning would come to a close when Chris McFarland popped out to second. Sparks would atone for his mistake immediately as he led off the top of the third inning with a 415-foot home run to right center, his fourth of the season, to put a dent in the Brevard County lead. Jon Matthews then followed with a double to left. After a Carlton Daal groundout, Matthews was at third but he would go no further as Terry would strike out Phillip and get Junior Arias to ground out. Daytona's defense would continue to play a large role in the ballgame, this time in the bottom of the fifth inning. Clint Coulter was able to reach on a one-out throwing error by 'Tugas shortstop Alex Blandino. He would move to third on a Victor Roache single to right. Brennan then hit what could've been an inning-ending double play ball but Blandino booted it, allowing Coulter to score. Terry, who got the start in order to give Jorge Ortega some rest, would retire 12 of the final 13 hitters he faced following the Matthews double and it wasn't until after his departure following the seventh inning that Daytona's offense would muster something of an uprising. Tyler Spurlin came on in relief to start the top of the eighth and walked Chad Wallach on four pitches. He would move to third on consecutive groundouts by Matthews and Daal. Then, as Spurlin faced Ervin, he threw a wild pitch past Garfield, allowing Wallach to sprint home, making it 4-2. The 'Tees would get the run back in the bottom half of the inning, starting with Cooper's single to right, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the most by a Manatee this season. Pena then reached on another Sparks error but would be erased as Garfield hit into an around the horn double play. The fifth Brevard County run would come on one final Tortuga error as Sparks threw Ortega's chopper wide. The inning ended shortly after as Ortega would be caught stealing at second. There would be tense moments in the top of the ninth after Spurlin got Arias to ground out and then struck out Blandino. Sebastian Elizalde then mashed a double to the wall in center to give Daytona hope. Wallach followed by punching a single through the hole between first and second as Elizalde would be held up at third. Preston Gainey would be called upon to record the final out, which he did, striking out Robert Ramirez to secure the win. In addition to Terry's strikeout total and his dominance over his final three plus innings of work, it should be noted he did not walk a batter over his seven innings pitched, which was also a career high for the left-hander. Needless to say, he was efficient, as he threw just 79 pitches, 57 of them for strikes. On the offensive side, Roache and Ortega recorded multi-hit nights. None of the Tortugas' three pitchers were credited with an earned run. The Manatees welcome the Dunedin Blue Jays to Space Coast Stadium for a three-game series at 6:35 P.M. on Thursday night. RHP Eric Marzec (1-2, 3.38 ERA) gets the start against RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (3-4, 3.46 ERA). Brevard County Box Score All 5 Manatee runs were unearned. Taylor Sparks now has 25 errors for Daytona on the season. Clint Terry gave up almost nothing. The lone exception was the 3rd inning when Sparks led off with a home run and the next hitter got a double. This happened after Nick Travieso had a 32 pitch 2nd inning so Terry may have been throw off by the long delay temporarily. The Manatees have now won only 3 of 10 against Daytona, a Reds' affiliate. Alex Blandino, who entered the game as the number two batting leader in the FSL, struck out 4 times in this game. Brevard County Game Log

I find myself in the strange position of defending these GM's and I think Bando, while not a great GM, does get a bit of a bad rap. Who exactly did he draft? '92 Ken Felder Bad pick but Chad McConnell, Ron Villone, Jonathan Lowe, Richard Greene, etc. were picked just after him who were largely no better. Apparently, there were a lot of dumb GM's that year. '93 Kelly Wunsch They could have had Marc Valdes or Jamey Wright who were the remaining picks of the first round that year. Wright would have been a better pick but Wunsch did have a long Major League career. '94 Antone Williamson Following picks were: Josh Booty, McKay Christensen and Doug Million '95 Geoff Jenkins I hope nobody has a problem with this one. '96 Chad Green Next pick Mark Kotsay (I wonder what Brewerfan reaction would be to that?). He did miss on the next two picks Eric Chavez and Adam Eaton. '97 Kyle Peterson Well Kyle ended up with a lot of injuries. Next picks that year: Brandon Larson, Jason Dellaero before Lance Berkman was taken. '98 J. M. Gold Big arm like many of you want drafted. But was injured like Peterson. Jeff Weaver was the next pick but he would not have signed with the Brewers anyway. '99 Ben Sheets So Bando's drafting, while not great, was reasonable for the most part. No team hits on every pick.

Tortugas improve to 14-3 in one-run games 3-2 win over Brevard County highlighted by Stephens' strong start By Tyler Murray / Daytona Tortugas 06/03/2015 12:40 AM ET Daytona Beach, FL - The Tortugas (32-20) wrapped up their four-game homestand with a 3-2 win over the Brevard County Manatees (22-29) on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. They've won six of their last eight games and estbalished a six-game lead in the Florida State League North Division with 18 games left in the first half. Brevard County came out swinging after a 1:25 delayed start, putting the game's first two men in scoring position with a single from Omar Garcia and a double by Chris McFarland. Clint Coulter brought home Garcia with a groundout to third. RHP Jackson Stephens (W, 4-2) struck out Victor Roache and then induced an inning-ending groundout to limit the damage. Daytona evened the score in the second, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. RF Jeff Gelalich brought home 3B Robert Ramirez from third with a 4-6-3 double play, and it was 1-1. As Stephens held down Brevard County's offense (he allowed just one hit from the second through the fifth inning), Daytona went to work at the plate. The Tortugas stranded the bases loaded in the fourth inning, but plated a pair in the fifth. CF Junior Arias started the decisive frame with a single to center, and quickly stole his 11th base of the season. SS Alex Blandino followed with a liner to left to bring home Arias and give Daytona its first lead, 2-1. Later in the fifth, Blandino moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Ramirez to make it 3-1. It was Ramirez' 10th RBI in his last seven games. Blandino's hit was his second of the night, comprising his fifth multi-hit game in the past week. Javier Salas (L, 4-4) was then removed in favor of Mark Williams, who recorded the final two outs in the inning. Stephens finished after six frames with two runs allowed on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. RHP Alejandro Chacin (H, 2) took over in the seventh, and retired the final six batters he faced after allowing a leadoff single. He struck out the side in the eighth. RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 6) recorded a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save in the last week. RHP Nick Travieso gets the start on Wednesday in Brevard County, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Manatee write-up not available yet. Javi Salas 4 1/3 innings with 7 H and 3 BB not a good outing. Mark Williams was excellent however in relief: 3 1/3 innings, 1 H, 0 BB, 6 K. Garrett Cooper was 2-4 with a 2B to continue his hot hitting. Other than those 2 hits and the two mentioned above to start the game, the Manatees managed only 1 other hit in the game. 2015 Brewers' 1st-Rd. Pick Speculation
WV Brew replied to brewcrewdue80's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
I am against taking Aiken with the 1st pick. It is too risky there. Take a look at Stephen Strasburg, now in his 6th year after Tommy John. He may be finished. ERA of 6.55, FIP at 3.96 the worst of his career, WHIP 1.721 the worst of his career, K/9 down to less than one per inning. Okay, maybe he just threw too many innings last year but people are now comparing him to Mark Prior. There are other players who can be taken. Maybe if he's available at the comp pick but not otherwise. These TJ issues crop up very often in 6-8 years after surgery. If a second surgery is required, the player is almost universally done as a baseball player. -
Brevard Bats Tamed in 4-1 Loss Manatees Four Game Winning Streak Snapped By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 06/01/2015 10:34 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/8/0/123834580/cuts/IMG_3296_bady9xrs_2hvkjajs.JPG Garrett Cooper, seen above, extended his hitting streak to 10 games in Monday's loss. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - After banging out 28 hits in the first two games of the series, the Brevard County Manatees (22-28) were held to just five hits as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (24-26) recorded a 4-1 win on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. Matt Crouse (2-1, 1.05 ERA) recorded the win after he surrendered just one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out six. Calvin Drummond pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Paul Voelker tossed two shutout frames to lock down his fifth save of the year. The Flying Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning. Jiwan James doubled to right-center field to leadoff the ballgame. Tyler Hanover then singled to right to put runners on the corners with no outs. Brandon Woodruff (1-3, 4.15 ERA) uncorked a wild pitch to score James and gave the Flying Tigers a 1-0 lead. A one-out double from Hanover and an RBI single by Javier Betancourt doubled the Lakeland lead in the third. Brevard County plated their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Garrett Cooper doubled to right-center with one out. Jose Pena then lined an RBI double down the third base line. Pena recorded his sixth RBI of the season on his second double of the year. Lakeland was able to obtain a two-run cushion again in the seventh. Ismael Salgado singled on the infield and was sacrificed to second by David Gonzalez. Two batters later, Hanover doubled down the left field line to score Salgado. Hanover finished with four hits, including two doubles. Woodruff exited after the seventh. He allowed ten hits and three runs. Woodruff did not walk a batter and fanned two. Kaleb Earls threw a scoreless eighth inning and allowed two singles. Lakeland completed the scoring in the ninth against Stephen Peterson. Peterson surrendered two hits and a sacrifice fly to Betancourt. Brevard County will head to Daytona tomorrow to open a two-game, home-and-home series against the Tortugas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. RHP Javi Salas (4-3, 2.32 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Manatees. Daytona will send RHP Jackson Stephens (3-2, 3.31 ERA) to the hill. Brevard County Box Score Woodruff 7/10 GO/FO in this game. Victor Roache and Taylor Brennan each struck out three times. Brevard County Game Log

Offense Leads Manatees to 8-3 Victory Clint Coulter has Three Hits In Win By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 05/31/2015 10:45 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/7/0/119206470/cuts/IMG_2726_6dg3g2ya_p5fk4k4r.JPG Clint Coulter, seen here from a game earlier this year, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in Sunday's win. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - For a second straight night, it was the offense of the Brevard County Manatees (22-27) that dominated against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (23-26) as Brevard County recorded an 8-3 win on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium. After Lakeland scored three runs in the top of the first against Wei-Chung Wang (3-2, 6.16 ERA), the Manatees scored the next eight runs of the ballgame. Dominic Ficociello recorded an RBI double and Francisco Martinez drove home a pair with a double in the first to give the Flying Tigers an early three-run cushion. The Brevard County offense responded immediately in the bottom of the first against Ryan Longstreth (2-4, 3.48 ERA). With one out, Jonathan Lucroy drew a walk. Clint Coulter then doubled down the right field line to move Lucroy to third. Victor Roache lined a screaming one-hopper into the diving glove of the shortstop David Gonzalez. Gonzalez didn't have a play as Lucroy scored, Coulter moved to third and Roache reached with an RBI infield single. A Taylor Brennan walk loaded the bases. The next batter, Garrett Cooper, recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field. Coulter scored and Roache moved to third on the play. Rafael Neda then walked to load the bases for Angel Ortega. He hit a hard grounder to first that couldn't be handled by Bobby Borchering. Borchering deflected the ball into shallow right field and was credited with an error. Both Roache and Brennan scored to give the Manatees a 4-3 lead. Wang settled in after the first. He did not allow a run over the next five innings. Overall, Wang surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks. He fanned six. On the other side, the Brevard County offense continued to impress. In the bottom of the fourth, Lucroy started a threat with a one-out walk. Coulter then singled to center. Roache hit another infield single to load the bases and to end Longstreth's night. Brennan Smith was summoned from the bullpen. Smith hit Brennan with a pitch to force in Lucroy. Cooper stepped up and lined a two-run double just fair down the first base line. Both Coulter and Roache scored to extend the Brevard County lead to four. Longstreth was hit with the loss after his worst outing of the season. He allowed seven runs - five earned - on six hits. He walked four and struck out one. Brevard County tacked on an insurance run in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Neda. Preston Gainey came on in relief to start the seventh. He retired the first eight men he faced before he ran into some trouble with two outs in the ninth. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Gainey was removed in favor of Tyler Spurlin. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Spurlin induced a groundout by Jiwan James to end the game. Spurlin recorded his first save of the season. Gainey lowered his ERA to 0.40 on the season after 2.2 scoreless frames. Brevard County will turn to RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-2, 4.20 ERA) as they go for the sweep tomorrow. LHP Matt Crouse (1-1, 0.87 ERA) will make a spot start for Lakeland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Lucroy, Coulter, Roache and Brennan all scored twice. Garrett Cooper with 3 RBI's. I don't remember a speed rating on Preston Gainey in this game but he has been pretty consistently around 94 this year in previous outings. He seemed to run out of gas in the 9th when he walked a couple of guys but that would have been three innnings work. Let's hope Wei-Chung Wang figured something out here. It would be nice if he would string together some quality starts. Manatees won all four games with Lucroy. It's nice to have another bat in there. Listen to the Eric Marzec pregame interview when MH links it later. He is very complimentary of Lucroy and the game he called in Marzec's start. Brevard County Game Log

Here you go 'stash: During Melvin's tenure, Brewers have won 48.82% of their games. For the next smallest cities during that time: KC: 44.30%, Clev: 49.07%, Cinc: 49.00%, Pitt: 44.90% So Melvin is squarely in the middle and Milwaukee has greater challenges than some of these towns in terms of broadcast revenues. Now I'm not a huge Melvin backer but he has gotten decent results during his tenure given the circumstances. He will have to be replaced by somebody. That somebody will have a lot of hurdles to fielding a winning team. I wish baseball were fairer but it's not.

Manatees Take Series Opener with Early Avalanche By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 05/31/2015 1:10 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/6/6/126974466/cuts/Lucroy_duavqtht_oscie2le.jpg Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (21-27) have leaned on their pitching staff over the last week to give them a chance to win. On Saturday night, their offense did their part and then some in a 14-0 rout of the Lakeland Flying Tigers (23-25) at Space Coast Stadium. The game's deciding inning came in the bottom of the second, which started when Victor Roache was in the hit shoulder by a pitch from Flying Tigers starting pitcher Jonathan Maciel. Taylor Brennan then followed with a hustle double to right centerfield. Garrett Cooper produced the first run of the Manatee onslaught with a single to left. Steven Halcomb then reached base when Flying Tiger second baseman Tyler Hanover made a throwing error on a groundball. Brevard County continued to play it station to station when Angel Ortega singled to center, bringing in Cooper. Omar Garcia then loaded the bases when he bunted his way aboard. Following a Chris McFarland strikeout, Jonathan Lucroy drove in Halcomb on a fly ball to left center that Flying Tiger left field Raph Rhymes missed on a diving attempt. After a Clint Coulter strikeout, Roache concluded his second at-bat of the inning with a two-run single to right for the two runs of the inning. The 'Tees would push one across in the bottom of the third thanks in part to Lakeland shortstop David Gonzalez, whose throw to first went wide, allowing Ortega to advance to second with two outs. That error would prove costly as Garcia doubled down the right field line to score Ortega. Brevard County would wipe out any thought of a Lakeland come back in their next turn at bat. After Lucroy grounded out to short to start the inning, Coulter walked and came around to score on a double by Brennan. Then, in a play that seemed to encapsulate the night for both teams, Maciel struck out Cooper, but the ball got by Flying Tigers catcher Grayson Greiner, allowing Cooper to reach, Roache to score and bring Maciel's night to a close. After reliever Nate Fury induced a flyout from Halcomb, Ortega then plated Brennan on an infield single as Lakeland third baseman Francisco Martinez had trouble getting the ball out of his glove. Garcia capped the inning with a base hit to center to score Cooper before Ortega got caught in a rundown to end the inning. The game turned surreal in the bottom of the eighth when the Flying Tigers, in an attempt to save a bullpen that had been overworked during the week, sent Martinez to pitch. Coulter immediately greeted him with a double to deep left center. After a flyout by Roache, Martinez walked Brennan and Cooper. With the bases loaded, Martinez then hit Halcomb on the elbow to bring home Coulter. Ortega continued the carousel with a flare into right to score Brennan. After Garcia popped out, McFarland slapped a base hit between first and second to score Cooper with the 14th and final run of the night. All told, every Manatee recorded a hit and they batted the order twice, something they had done only three times all season. Garcia and Ortega both recorded four-hit games; Brennan and Roache logged two-hit games. Halcomb, Garcia, Ortega and Roache had multi-RBI games with Ortega chief among them with three. The offense's outburst overshadowed another outstanding performance by the pitching staff. Eric Marzec had his best start of the season, giving up just three hits in six shutout innings. The trio of Marzec, Clint Terry and Manny Barreda combined to prevent a Lakeland baserunner from reaching third base. The Manatees will look to keep building on the momentum of the last three games on Sunday at 5:05 P.M. as LHP Wei-Chung Wang (2-2, 6.39 ERA) takes to the mound against fellow left-hander Ryan Longstreth (2-3, 3.66 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Eric Marzec has been as high as AAA, now going as a starter for the Manatees. He had a productive night with 6 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 10/4 GO/FO. Clint Terry and Manny Barreda finished the final 3 innings with no damage. Four hit nights for Angel Ortega and Omar Garcia. Omar Garcia started off the season 0-19 and had a horrendous April at the plate has come all the way back to .261 while getting a fair number of walks. He also leads the league in stolen bases. Taylor Brennan had two doubles in the game. Victor Roache with 2 hits. Lakeland's bullpen had been depleted in their last series so they tried to get extra innings out of Jonathan Maciel, which is why they let him give up so many runs. 3rd baseman Francisco Martinez pitched the final inning for Lakeland. 'Tees are now 3-0 with Jonathan Lucroy in the lineup. Brevard County Game Log

Manatees win 14-0. Omar Garcia, working on a 4-4 night pops out against a position player in the 8th. Final note on Jorge Ortega's performance yesterday. Eric Marzec went 6 shutout innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk. Yet he had thrown more balls before the end of the 3rd than Jorge Ortega had in the entire 9 inning start yesterday. Amazing. Link report later.

Lucroy magic continues. Manatees up 11-0 after 4.

Manatees' OBP leaders: Garrett Cooper .365 Chris McFarland .349 Jose Pena .340 Victor Roache .338 Clint Coulter .335 Were you expecting that leader?
