  1. Cameron Garfield in the lineup tonight for the first time in a week. Has been out just due to manager's decision apparently.
  2. There was a pitching coach in the '70's (I want to say Johnny Sain but that might be wrong) who maintained modern pitchers were not throwing enough. The '72 White Sox had a 3 man rotation for much of the year (Wilbur Wood 49 starts, Tom Bradley 40, Stan Bahnsen 43). The '72 Brewers had nobody starting more than 30 games (Jim Lonborg 30, Bill Parsons 30). Of course, the White Sox never stuck with it so there was no real experiment in that sense. The theory was that pitchers never fully developed their arm strength but used them as if they had. As others have mentioned, old time pitchers threw many more innings. Last year was the first season that complete games fell below 0.02 percent.
  3. Fantastic outing for Jorge Lopez. May have been his best to date.
  4. Yankees Avoid Sweep With Five-Run Ninth Brevard County Held to Just Two Hits in 6-2 Loss Viera, Fla. – The Tampa Yankees (16-14) exploded for five runs in the top of ninth inning against the Brevard County Space Explorers (14-15) en route to a 6-2 win on Saturday Night at Space Coast Stadium. With the Space Explorers leading 2-1, Kaleb Earls (0-1, 4.91 ERA) was summoned from the bullpen to try to close the game out. Abiatal Avelino started the frame with a single to left field. After showing bunt, Tyler Wade then blooped a double down the left field line to move Avelino over to third. Miguel Andujar, the number three hitter, made his way to the plate. On a 3-0 pitch, Andujar crushed a three-run home run onto the left field berm deck and gave the Yankees their first lead of the night, 4-2. Tampa was not done, however. Two batters later, Danny Oh doubled into the right-center field gap. After a Michael O’Neill strike out, Ericson Leonora was hit by a pitch. The night was over for Earls as Scott Lieser came on in relief. His first pitch was wild and to the backstop. Oh scored from third to extend the Tampa lead to three. O’Neill took second on the wild pitch. Wes Wilson completed the scoring with an RBI single to right field that plated O’Neill. When the inning was over, the Yankees had scored five runs on four hits and turned a one run deficit into a four run advantage. Earls was hit with the blown save and the loss. He surrendered five runs on four hits in 0.2 innings. The Space Explorers were limited to just two hits on the night, but never trailed until the ninth inning. Brevard County originally opened the scoring in the third. Angel Ortega drew a leadoff walk. With one out, Chris McFarland singled to right to put runners on the corners. Taylor Brennan then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ortega. It was Brennan’s 12th RBI of the year. The Yankees would tie the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Michael O’Neill, but the Space Explorers immediately answered in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Garrett Cooper walked. Rafael Neda stepped up and singled through the hole on the left side to move Cooper up to second. The next batter, Jose Pena, lifted a high fly ball into left field that was dropped by Leonora. It appeared Leonora had trouble locating the ball and each runner moved up 90 feet to load the bases with one out. Ortega bounced a grounder to third, but beat the throw on the attempted around-the-horn double play. Cooper scored on the fielder’s choice to give Brevard County the 2-1 lead. Brevard County starter Brandon Woodruff battled the entire night, but ended up with a no-decision. He tossed just 4.2 innings, thanks in largely to a 5th inning 16-pitch at-bat from Wade, which resulted in one of Woodruff’s three strikeouts. Woodruff allowed one run on four hits and walked five. Preston Gainey pitched two scoreless relief innings. He allowed three hits and fanned two. Gainey has not allowed a run in his first eight appearances and 13.2 innings of the season. Conor Mullee (1-1, 2.13 ERA) was credited with the win. He pitched a perfect 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. The loss marked the first time in 2015 that Brevard County lost a game when leading after eight innings. They were 11-0 entering Saturday. Despite the loss, the Space Explorers still recorded the series win, taking two of three games from the Yankees. Tomorrow is a league-wide off day for Mother’s Day. The Manatees return to action on Monday night when they will host the Bradenton Marauders at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. RHP Javi Salas (3-2, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday’s game. He will be opposed by LHP Cody Dickson (2-3, 2.97 ERA).
  5. Tampa 6, Brevard County 2 The Manatees were looking for their first sweep of the season and going above .500. They took a 2-1 lead into the 9th despite only having 2 singles and 3 walks to show for offense. Kaleb Earls has had a good start to the season and he was brought in for the save. However, after giving up a soft single and double, he gave up a 3 run home run to Miguel Andujar. The Yankees added 2 more runs for more than enough to take the game. Brandon Woodruff has really struggled to make it through 5 innings and today was no exception. He gave up 4 hits and 5 walks in only 4 2/3 innings but only one run. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log I will add the game story in a separate post later.
  6. Brevard County 5, Tampa 4 The Manatees came from behind to take the lead in the 6th and Tristan Archer and Trevor Seidenberger made the one run stand. Wei-Chung Wang had another rough start, throwing 90 pitches in 5 innings. Garrett Cooper had a 2 run double in the 6th to tie the game and scored the lead run on a Jose Pena single. 6th inning rally, Garcia's Glove power Space Explorers Brevard County Clinches Series Win By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 05/09/2015 12:50 AM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/3/6/123303436/cuts/Brennan_5h1duu5r_8fgkp2l8.JPG Taylor Brennan had three hits and scored two runs in Friday's win over Tampa. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - It took a true team effort for the Brevard County Space Explorers (14-14) to clinch a second straight series win on Friday night. First, it took a shutdown effort from the bullpen, followed by persistence at the plate from the offense and finally, some tremendous defense to give Brevard County a 5-4 win Friday night over the Tampa Yankees (15-14). The action began right away as the Yankees took a lead in the opening half inning. It would begin on a one-out bunt single by Tyler Wade. He would steal second with Miguel Andujar at the plate, who then struck out. Mike Ford would then place a floating single into center to bring Wade around to score and give Tampa a 1-0 lead. The Space Explorer offense, fresh off one of its best performances of the season, was ready to go on Friday night and responded right away to the deficit. After Chris McFarland singled to left, Taylor Brennan would double over centerfielder Michael O'Neill's head to put two runners in scoring position for Clint Coulter. He would follow with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game. Victor Roache then came to the plate and hit a blooper down the right field line that fell in between the right fielder, first baseman and second baseman, ultimately resulting in Brennan scoring and Roache winding up on second with a double. The lead would until the top of the third inning, which started with a double down the left field lane by the newest Yankee added to the roster, Renzo Martini. That would bring Abiatal Avelino to the plate, who would hit a dribbler up the first base line but his speed would cause Wei-Chung Wang to make an errant throw to first that would get by Garrett Cooper, which would allow Avelino and bring the Yankees level. With Wade at the plate, Wang would be called for a balk, moving Avelino up to second. Wade then singled to left and Avelino was able to dodge Rafael Neda's tag at the plate to put Tampa back in the lead. It looked as if the Space Explorers would equalize again in the bottom half as they had runners at the corners with two outs thanks to singles by McFarland and Roache. However, with Cooper at the plate, they would attempt a double steal. Avelino cut off Kyle Higashioka's throw to second and threw home to just get McFarland to end the inning. The Yankees would tack on to their lead in the top half of the fourth when Ericson Leonora hit his third home run of the season, an opposite field solo shot to right center estimated at over 400 feet to make it 4-2. The game would ultimately be decided in the bottom of the sixth inning. The frame would start with singles to left by Brennan and Coulter. Following a strikeout by Roache, Cooper came to the plate against Yankees starting pitcher Jonathan Holder (1-2, 3.41 ERA) for what would become the game's biggest at-bat. In a lengthy at-bat, Cooper fouled off several pitches from Holder that he ran outside. Cooper finally broke through and took advantage of an enormous gap in left centerfield due to defensive placement, ripping a double that scored both runners to tie the game at four. That would prove to be Holder's final batter of the night, as he was pulled in favor of Angel Rincon. He would get Neda to ground out to short but with Jose Pena up to bat, he would throw a wild pitch that allowed Cooper to move up to third. Pena singled up the middle shortly after that and the Space Explorers had a lead they would not relinquish. After two spectacular innings of relief by Tristan Archer (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who gave up only a single to the first batter he faced, the lead would be trusted to Trevor Seidenberger, who would need some help from his defense to make it stand up. Mike Ford led off the top of the eighth with a drive to deep right centerfield and it appeared Tampa would have the tying run in scoring position to start the inning but Omar Garcia would make an incredible sprint to the ball and then went airborne, extending his arms as far as they could go to make the catch for a sensational first out of the inning. Seidenberger then struck out O'Neill and got Danny Oh to fly out to left end the inning. In the top of the ninth, Seidenberger would coax a fly out to center from Leonora and a groundout to short from Higashioka but would lose Martini on a walk. When he got Avelino to pop out to short, the Space Explorers had clinched their second consecutive series win. Wang over five innings gave up three earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two in a no-decision. Holder would be saddled with the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits, striking out four and walking none in 5.1 innings pitched. Archer and Seidenberger combined to give up just one hit over the final four innings out of the bullpen. The Space Explorers will go for their first series sweep on Saturday at 6:35 P.M., RHP Brandon Woodruff (0-1, 6.33) will get the start for Brevard County. 7. Brevard County 8, Tampa 4 Hiram Burgos went 6 innings to get the win. A 7 run 3rd inning keyed by a two out three run Home Run by Rafael Neda was the difference in this game. Neda ended up with 4 RBIs. Stephen Peterson worked the final three innings, yielding a two run home run. Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Jose Pena homers (1) on a fly ball to left center field. Angel Ortega singles on a line drive to left fielder Ericson Leonora. Omar Garcia singles on a bunt ground ball to second baseman Tyler Wade. Angel Ortega to 2nd. Christopher McFarland walks. Seven-Run Third Rockets Space Explorers to 8-4 Victory Brevard County Runs Away From Tampa Early By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 05/07/2015 11:14 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/4/0/123072740/cuts/IMG_3870_gw6x3c5q_ds8omdt6.JPG Jose Pena hit a solo home run to kickstart a seven-run third inning for the Space Explorers on Thursday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Space Explorers (13-14) scored seven runs in the third inning en route to an 8-4 victory over the Tampa Yankees (15-13) on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. With the Yankees leading 1-0, Jose Pena stepped to the plate to lead off the third inning against Tampa starter Chaz Hebert. Pena launched a solo home run to left to tie the game. It was Pena's first homer of the season. Angel Ortega then singled to left and Omar Garcia pushed a bunt single past the mound towards second to put two on with nobody out. A Chris McFarland walk loaded the bases. The next batter, Taylor Brennan, laced a single to center field. Ortega and Garcia scored; center fielder Mark Payton bobbled the ball and allowed Brennan and McFarland to advance to second and third, respectively. Clint Coulter then drilled an RBI single to left to plate McFarland and move Brennan up to third. The Space Explorers led 4-1. Hebert struck out Victor Roache and Garrett Cooper. Rafael Neda stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs. Neda roped a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 7-1 Space Explorers For Neda, it was his first home run of the year. Brevard County sent 11 men to the plate in the third and scored seven runs on six hits. After the explosive inning, Brevard County starter Hiram Burgos (2-3, 3.67 ERA) allowed a leadoff walk to Mike Ford and back-to-back singles to Mark Payton and Danny Oh. Oh's RBI single scored Ford and cut the Space Explorers lead to five. Burgos settled down nicely, however. He got Ericson Leonora to bounce into a double play and fanned Kyle Higashioka to end the frame. Burgos recorded the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. He is now tied for the Florida State League lead with 41 strikeouts on the season. The Space Explorers added to the lead in the seventh inning. Coulter started the frame with a single to left. Roache and Cooper walked consecutively to load the bases with nobody out. Neda drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to right. The Space Explorers led 8-2. Tampa's Miguel Andujar hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to complete the scoring. Hebert (2-2, 5.94) was hit with the loss. He recorded just two outs in the third inning and surrendered seven runs on six hits. Stephen Peterson recorded a three-inning save for his first save of the year. He gave up the two-run homer to Andujar, but nothing more. Peterson fanned three. The Space Explorers and the Yankees will continue the series tomorrow at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 6.04 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. Tampa will send Jonathan Holder to the mound. 8. Jose Pena looking for his second home run of the 3rd inning for the Manatees. Edit. The Yankees drilled him instead.
  9. At High Desert Corey Hart had .928 OPS, 9th in the league. League average: .739 Coulter this year: 1.062 OPS, 1st in the league. League average: .657 Hart was .809 in 2003 at Huntsville, good for 22nd in the Southern League. The comparison is not a good one. I understand that Clint has to keep this up for the whole year, which will be difficult.
  10. Coulter is a much better hitter than Corey Hart was at this stage. Check the numbers.
  11. Clearwater Tops Brevard County, Avoids Sweep Threshers Defeat Manatees 7-3 in Series Finale By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 05/06/2015 9:14 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/7/0/119206470/cuts/IMG_2726_6dg3g2ya_p5fk4k4r.JPG (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Clearwater, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers (13-14) won the final game of the series against the Brevard County Manatees (12-14) by a score of 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Bright House Field. Clearwater opened the scoring in the third inning against Brevard starter Jorge Ortega (3-2, 3.00 ERA). Chris Harris singled to left to start the frame. After a balk, J.P. Crawford hit a two-run home run to right field. Two batters later, Andrew Knapp doubled to left. Dylan Cozens then reached on a throwing error by first baseman Garrett Cooper. The error allowed Knapp to score and made it 3-0 Threshers. Ortega was hit with the loss. He allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits. He walked one and struck out one. The Threshers added to the lead in the fifth. With one out, Crawford walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Andrew Pullin then singled up the middle to plate Crawford and give Clearwater a four-run advantage. The Manatees cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth inning. Omar Garcia reached on an infield single to lead things off. Chris McFarland singled as well on a liner to center. Two batters later, Clint Coulter stepped into the box and launched a three-run homer to the opposite field. It was Coulter's seventh home run of the season and gave him 22 RBI. The homer made it 4-3, Clearwater. Clearwater would put the game away in the eighth against Tyler Spurlin. With one out, Drew Stankiewicz singled to right. Spurlin threw a pickoff attempt away and hit Devin Lohman to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Harris walked and the bases were loaded. Spurlin then hit Crawford, walked Pullin and walked Knapp to give the Threshers a 7-3 advantage. Clint Terry threw two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and fanned two. Spurlin surrendered three runs in 0.2 innings and Tristan Archer recorded the final out of the eighth. Clearwater starter David Whitehead (2-3, 3.28 ERA) earned the win after he allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out seven. The Manatees return home tomorrow to kickoff a three-game series with the Tampa Yankees. First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Hiram Burgos (1-3, 3.81 ERA) will start for Brevard County. The Yankees will send Chaz Hebert to the hill.
  12. Clearwater 7, Brevard County 3 Jorge Ortega with probably his worst start this year. Went 5 innings giving up 4 runs. He was behind a lot of batters, unlike his usual performance. He went, I think, 30 innings between walks when he walked J. P. Crawford in the 5th inning. That was the only walk he issued but made it tough on himself by working deep counts. Crawford, probably the Phillies' top prospect, also had a two run home run off Ortega. Clint Terry worked two scoreless innings after the Manatees got back in the game. Tyler Spurlin came in in the eighth inning and couldn't make it out of that inning. Check the box score if you have a strong stomach. Clint Coulter's three run home run in the 6th put the Manatees within one run. The home run was followed by a long double to left center by Victor Roache but they couldn't get him home. Coulter's home run went to right center. He has really been pull happy this year and some teams are playing a shift on him so it's good to see that. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log No Manatees' story yet, so here is the Clearwater take: Crawford Returns, Lifts Threshers to 7-3 Win Top Prospect Drives in 3 as Threshers Salvage Finale over Manatees By Kirsten Karbach / Clearwater Threshers 05/06/2015 3:54 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/9/4/122740894/cuts/JP_Crawford_2_9htxo9ca_nfum19v2.JPG CLEARWATER, Fla. - JP Crawford made an immediate impact for the Threshers in his season debut. The Phillies' No. 1 prospect belted a two-run shot in the third inning, and finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs in his first appearance of 2015. Crawford had been sidelined since Spring Training with an oblique injury, and the 20-year old was activated from the disabled prior to Wednesday's contest. It was his home run in the third which broke open the scoring on Wednesday. With Chase Harris aboard after a single, Crawford lifted a 2-2 offering onto the berm in right field to put the Threshers up, 2-0. Clearwater (13-14) would add another tally in the inning when Andrew Knapp doubled with two outs, and later scored on an error by Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper. Knapp finished 2-for-4, and the reigning FSL Player of the Week has collected at least one hit in each of his last nine games. Two innings later, Crawford worked a one-out walk against Brevard County starter Jorge Ortega (3-2), and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Andrew Pullin followed by delivering a single up the middle, plating Crawford to make it 4-0. David Whitehead held the Manatees to just three hits across five shutout innings before Brevard County (12-14) struck for three in the sixth. Whitehead, who had five consecutive strikeouts prior to the frame, permitted a pair of singles before Clint Coulter lifted a three-run home run to cut the lead down to one. Whitehead (2-3) earned the win after giving the Threshers six innings in the start. He did not issue a walk and finished with seven strikeouts, having permitted three runs on seven hits. Crawford found himself in the midst of yet another Threshers rally in the eighth inning. Clearwater loaded the bases with two down against reliever Tyler Spurlin thanks to a single, hit batsman, and walk. Crawford was then hit with an 0-1 pitch to push across a run, before Pullin and Knapp each worked a walk to score two more and give the Threshers the 7-3 advantage. The Threshers will hit the road to battle the Daytona Tortugas for three games, beginning on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Clearwater returns home to Bright House Field on Monday, May 11th, to open a seven-game homestead.
  13. Cameron Garfield was a late scratch. No word on what the problem is.
  14. Brevard County 2, Clearwater 1 Javi Salas made it through 5 1/3 innings tonight when he tired in the 6th. Preston Gainey and Kaleb Earls closed out the game with scoreless performances. Victor Roache is struggling badly in this series. He had a golden sombrero yesterday and a hat trick today. Yesterday was somewhat understandable with Mark Leiter in for the Thrashers, who is a big strike out pitcher. Today, though, Victor had 3 of the 5 Manatees strikeouts. In the key bottom of the 6th, Clint Coulter overthrew the cutoff man, allowing a runner to go to second. The very next hitter hit a fly to right field and Clint threw out the runner from 3rd with what would have been the tying run. Pitching Dominates in 2-1 Manatees Win Salas, Gainey, Earls Shutdown Threshers By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 05/05/2015 10:40 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/5/0/121645550/cuts/IMG_3176_1fns03sk_y8swfq0u.JPG Brevard County starter Javi Salas, seen here from a game from earlier this season, recorded his second win of the season on Tuesday. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Clearwater, Fla. - The pitching of the Brevard County Manatees (12-13) dominated in a 2-1 victory over the Clearwater Threshers (12-14) on Tuesday night at Bright House Field. Javier Salas (2-2, 2.08 ERA), Preston Gainey and Kaleb Earls allowed just four men to reach scoring position the entire night and never relinquished the lead the Manatees took in the fourth inning. Brevard County plated two runs in the fourth. Steven Halcomb singled on a liner to right to lead off the frame. Angel Ortega then hit a ground-rule double over the left field fence. Omar Garcia recorded an RBI on a groundout to second. Halcomb scored and Ortega moved to third. Chris McFarland stepped up a doubled to left to plate Ortega. It was McFarland's 10th double of the season and gave the Manatees a 2-0 lead. Clearwater was able to cut the lead in half in the sixth against Salas. Drew Stankiewicz walked with nobody out. Andrew Pullin doubled to left to move Stankiewicz to third. Andrew Knapp grounded out to short, but Stankiewicz scored. Dylan Cozens then singled on a liner to right to put runners on the corners and end Salas' evening. Gainey entered from the bullpen. Willians Astudillo hit a fly ball to right field. Coulter hauled it in and gunned down Pullin at the plate to end the inning and preserve the lead. Salas allowed one run on five hits over 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out four. Gainey surrendered just one hit and one walk over 2.1 scoreless frames. Earls allowed a one-out walk in the ninth to Angelo Mora, but struck out Zach Green and retired Devin Lohman on a grounder to close the game out. The four-out save was Earls' first save of the season and fourth of his career. Colin Kleven (2-2, 4.82 ERA) was hit with the loss. He allowed two runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out three. The Manatees will go for the sweep tomorrow at Bright House Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Jorge Ortega (3-1, 2.57 ERA) will get the start for Brevard County. The Threshers will send David Whitehead (1-3, 3.03 ERA) to the hill. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log
  15. Brevard County 6, Clearwater 4 A big two out double over the head of the Threshers' center fielder into the teeth of the wind, by Garrett Cooper, scored the go ahead run in the 8th inning. Clint Coulter singled in two runs in the ninth with two outs that was the difference in the end. That backed up another strong outing from Trevor Seidenberger, who pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and recorded the win. Casey Medlen with another shaky outing in the 9th but survived this time. Brevard County opened the scoring in the top of the second. Garrett Cooper drew a leadoff walk. After back-to-back outs, Cooper stole second. Angel Ortega singled up the middle to open the scoring. The Threshers tied the score in the bottom half of the frame. Zach Green hit a solo home run against Manatees starter Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff did not factor into the decision. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He fanned four. The 'Tees took the lead in the third. With one out, Chris McFarland reached on a bunt single. Taylor Brennan then grounded out to the first, but advanced McFarland up to second. McFarland stole third before Clint Coulter drew a walk to put men on the corners with two outs. Victor Roache stepped up and drilled an RBI double to left field to plate McFarland. The 2-1 score would hold until the fifth. Woodruff plunked the leadoff man, Devin Lohman. Chase Harris then sacrificed Lohman up to second. Lohman would score on an RBI single to center by Drew Stankiewicz that tied the game at two. The Threshers took the lead in the very next inning on a sacrifice fly by Willians Astudillo. The Manatees plated a run in the seventh to tie the game. Steven Halcomb drew a walk with nobody out. Ortega then singled to left. Omar Garcia sacrificed the runners to second and third. The Threshers summoned Edubray Ramos (1-2, 2.93 ERA) from the bullpen to face McFarland. He hit a deep drive to center that was tracked down by Harris. The first baseman, Astudillo, cut the ball off, but threw the ball away. Ortega tried to score as well, but the catcher, Andrew Knapp, picked the ball up at the backstop and threw to a covering Astudillo at the plate in time to get Ortega. The tie would not last long, however. In the top of the eighth, Brennan worked a leadoff walk. Three batters later, Brennan stole second with two outs. Cooper crushed a double to center to score Brennan and give the Manatees a 4-3 lead. Brevard County added to the lead in the ninth against Ulises Joaquin. With two outs, Garcia singled up the middle. After a McFarland single, Brennan walked to load the bases. Coulter pulled a single to left to score Garcia and McFarland. The 'Tees led, 6-3. Casey Medlen was summoned from the bullpen for the bottom half of the ninth. Green singled and Lohman doubled to start things off. Harris then walked to load the bases. Stankiewicz hit a sacrifice fly to right and trim the Brevard County lead to two. Medlen retired Andrew Pullin and Knapp to end the game. It was Medlen's fourth save of the year. Trevor Seidenberger (2-0, 0.00 ERA) was credited with the win in relief. He tossed 2.1 shutout innings and allowed just one hit. Seidenberger has not allowed a run in his first 10.1 innings of work this season. Ramos was tagged with the loss. He allowed the go-ahead run on Cooper's eighth inning double. The Manatees and Threshers will play game two of the series tomorrow night at Bright House Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Javi Salas (1-2, 2.16 ERA) will start for Brevard County. Colin Kleven (2-1, 5.09 ERA) will toe the rubber for Clearwater. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log
  16. MLBTrade Rumors Glasnow or Taillon would look pretty good.
  17. 3-year deal is a bit of a surprise to me; I assumed he'd get the "Interim" tag, and have the option of moving back into the front office at year's end. Doug said he didn't believe in interim managers at the press conference.
  18. To me, RR had a bad tendency to overuse certain players. This year, he has Broxton on a pace to pitch in 71 games. Broxton has not appeared in that many games since 2009, when he had 73, was younger and stronger than he is now. Jeffress, is on a pace to appear in 91 games. He had 29 last year. Will Smith, after falling apart last year, is on a pace to pitch in 78 games, the same as last year. RR just hasn't learned from his mistakes. That's where I fault him. Also, I think he has mismanaged the Braun injury situation. He has managed this year like it's not a problem but this procedure has never been done on a baseball player before so a cautionary approach might have been better. Braun may well hit better if given regular days off until we know how his hand is going to react. There is a lot of Brewers' cash at stake there. I would have preferred a pitchers' manager like Bamberger (not that he was perfect) who at least understands that pitchers need rest occasionally and managers need to have some discipline in using them. Well, we see how Counsell does I guess.
  19. Daytona 2, Brevard County 1 (10 Innings) Two walks and two wild pitches in the 10th ended this game in the bottom of the 10th. Tortugas take 4 of 5 in the series. Wei-Chung Wang was much better today with 6 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K. Tristan Archer threw 3 scoreless innings. Taylor Brennan was 3-4 with a walk but struck out with the lead runner on 2nd and 2 out in the top of the 10th. Tortugas Use Bullpen, Wild Pitch to Walk Off Manatees 2-1 Daytona Takes Series Over Manatees By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 05/03/2015 10:14 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/0/122206370/cuts/IMG_3223_krfco5ey_y8onf4eu.JPG (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Daytona Beach, Fla. - A weekend series that was defined by the Daytona Tortugas (16-8) finding ways to win in tough spots ended in appropriate fashion on Sunday night as the Tortugas scored a walk-off 2-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (10-13) in 10 innings on a wild pitch. Both teams would get runners on in the opening innings but neither team produced a genuine threat until Daytona came to the plate in the bottom of the third inning. The Tortugas two-out rally would begin with a double to center by Alex Blandino. He would be brought home shortly after that on a Sebastian Elizalde double to right. Elizalde would be stranded by Wei-Chung Wang when he got Chad Wallach to ground out to first. The Manatees would erase the deficit quickly in the following inning. The frame would start on a Taylor Brennan single to right, who then moved up to second when Clint Coulter followed with a base hit of his own. Following a strikeout of Victor Roache, the 'Tees would then get their lone run of the game when Garrett Cooper singled to left and Brennan was able to lunge around Joe Hudson's tag at the plate. The inning would come to a close after that when Paul Eshleman grounded into an around the horn double play. The next true scoring threat would come in the bottom of the seventh inning with Manatee reliever Tristan Archer just entered the game. It would start with a base hit to left by Carlton Daal. After Nick Benedetto struck out trying to bunt his way on base, Archer appeared to have Daal picked off but he would be called for a balk, awarding Daal second base. Phillip Ervin then hit a deep drive to the gap in right center that Omar Garcia ran down, leading Daal to tag up for third. It appeared he wanted to try to score on the play but 'Tugas manager Eli Marrero signaled for Daal to slam on the brakes when he saw the relay throw and Daal just made it back to third base around Brennan's tag. The bullet would be dodged when Archer got Blandino to ground out to third to end the inning. Archer would allow baserunners in the eighth and ninth innings but neither would advance past first base. Daytona relievers Nolan Becker and Jimmy Moran were equal to the task, which would bring the game to extra innings. Brevard County looked poised to go ahead in the top of the 10th when Cameron Garfield singled to left to lead off and then Angel Ortega bunted his way on, just beating Hudson's throw to first. After Garcia struck out trying to bunt, Moran would give way for Evan Mitchell (2-0, 4.82 ERA). He would strike out Chris McFarland and Brennan to keep the game tied and give Daytona a chance to win it. The 'Tugas would get an ideal start to the inning when Blandino drew a leadoff walk against new Manatee reliever Stephen Peterson (2-1, 2.53 ERA). He would be forced out at second on a grounder by Elizalde. Wallach would move Elizalde over when he grounded out to third, which brought Taylor Sparks to the plate. While he was at the plate, Garfield would block a pitch up the third base line and Elizalde took the gamble of going for third. Garfield's throw was in time, but Brennan could not complete the tag and the Tortugas were now 90 feet away from a win. Peterson would walk Sparks, which gave Hudson the opportunity to decide it. However, it wound up being out of his hands as Peterson's pitch went to the backstop, Elizalde sprinted home and Daytona had earned a series win. Wang had a solid start against a strong Daytona lineup for the second time this season, giving up one run on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out five in a no-decision. Daytona starter Sal Romano gave up one run in six innings of work as well, surrendering five hits while walking three and striking out five. Mitchell would be rewarded for his work in escaping the top of the 10th with his second win of the season. The Manatees now travel to Clearwater, where they'll begin a three-game series with the Threshers on Monday at 7 P.M. at Bright House Field. RHP Brandon Woodruff (0-1, 6.89 ERA) gets the start for Brevard County against RHP Mark Leiter (1-0, 1.80 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log

(Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - The Daytona Tortugas (15-8) used a five-run seventh inning to defeat the Brevard County Manatees (10-12), 6-4, at Space Coast Stadium on Saturday night. With the Manatees leading 2-1 in the seventh and Hiram Burgos (1-3, 3.81 ERA) cruising along, the Tortugas made their move. After a single, a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out, Phillip Ervin hit a tailor-made double play ball to shortstop. Angel Ortega booted the grounder and allowed Taylor Sparks to score to tie the game. Burgos was then lifted in favor of Tyler Spurlin. Alex Blandino then blooped a two-run double down the right field line to give Daytona a 4-2 advantage. The next batter, Sebastian Elizalde, smacked a two-run single up the middle to complete the five run frame. The Tortugas took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning stretch in front of a stunned Space Coast Stadium crowd. Brevard County did not go away quietly, however. Taylor Brennan worked a walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh. After a Clint Coulter fly out, Victor Roache stepped to the plate. He launched a towering, opposite field, two-run homer to cut the deficit in half. It was Roache's sixth home run of the season and gave him 21 RBI on the year. The Daytona bullpen combination of Jimmy Moran and Zach Weiss retired the final seven Manatees to secure the victory. Elhajj Muhammad (3-0, 1.69) was credited with the win. He allowed just the Roache homer in two innings. Both offenses got off to hot starts in the ballgame. Three singles, including an RBI base knock by Robert Ramirez, gave the Tortugas an early cushion. Chris McFarland followed up with a leadoff homer to right field to the tie the score. It was McFarland's first long ball of the season. The Manatees broke the tie in the fifth. Brennan walked with one out. Roache followed up with a soaring RBI triple off of the right-center field fence. Roache finished with a 3-for-4 night and three RBI. He finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Burgos was hit with the loss. He allowed five runs - four earned - on six hits. He walked one and tied a season high with eight strikeouts. The series will wrap up tomorrow in Daytona Beach. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 7.71 ERA) will get the start for the Manatees. The Tortugas will send RHP Sal Romano (2-1, 3.93 ERA) to the hill. Daytona Top of the 7th Taylor Sparks singles on a ground ball to shortstop Angel Ortega. (Off Brennan's glove to Ortega) Jon Matthews walks. Taylor Sparks to 2nd. (Hit on a 3-2 count when he had been trying to bunt) Carlton Daal strikes out swinging. Phillip Ervin reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Angel Ortega. Taylor Sparks scores. Jon Matthews to 3rd. Jeff Gelalich to 2nd. (Could have been a inning ending double play although Ervin has good speed) Pitching Change: Tyler Spurlin replaces Hiram Burgos. 22. Jeffress again. Now on a pace for 95 apperances this year.
  23. DeMuth came in as a pitcher!? Reverse Leal? Edit. Must have been an Milb misprint. Now fixed.
  24. The problem with trading guys like Lucroy and Gomez is that Melvin will then likely flip prospects for their MLB ready replacements (or sign free agents giving up draft choices). They are not going to go with Maldonado as an everyday catcher whether they are rebuilding or not. Same with Logan Schafer in CF. This would then defeat the purpose of making the deal. Look, I don't mind making trades that make sense but I'm against announcing we are rebuilding and then making bad trades just to say we did something.
